Berean Study Bible The Ark Rests on AraratGod acted faithfully toward Noah, preserving the man He had chosen to carry life through the flood. Gen 19:29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain… and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark. His care included every living creature sheltered in the ark, preserving the created order through judgment. Gen 6:19-20 And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark… And God sent a wind over the earth, God began to reverse the flood by moving the wind (ruach, also meaning “spirit”) over the waters. Exo 14:21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,… and the waters began to subside. The judgment waters receded, opening the way for the earth’s renewal and for Noah’s family to begin life again under God’s covenant care. Exo 14:22 and the Israelites went through the sea.… The springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens were closed, God stopped the sources of water that had brought judgment upon the earth. The fountains of the deep ceased, and the heavens no longer poured out rain. The same God who unleashed the flood now restrained it, bringing the judgment He had decreed toward its appointed end. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … and the rain from the sky was restrained. After forty days and nights of rain, the downpour ended. The waters would remain for a time, but their increase had stopped. God’s restraint of the rain marked the beginning of the earth’s restoration and His preservation of Noah, his family, and the creatures in the ark. Deu 11:16-17 But be careful that you are not enticed to turn aside… The waters receded steadily from the earth, God brought the floodwaters down in an orderly and gradual way, ending the destruction He had sent upon the earth. The retreat of the waters began the restoration of the land for Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. Psa 18:15 The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations… and after 150 days The waters that had covered the earth began to diminish after the period in which they prevailed. The stated length emphasizes the full extent of the flood and God’s appointed timing in bringing it to an end. Gen 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth for 150 days. the waters had gone down. Though the earth was not yet dry, the lowering waters marked the beginning of a new stage in Noah’s deliverance and the renewal of life on the earth. Psa 74:15-17 You broke open the fountain and the flood;… On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Five months after the Flood began, the receding waters marked a turning point from judgment toward renewal in Noah’s historical experience. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … the ark came to rest Noah, his family, and the animals remained within the ark until God’s appointed time for them to leave. Their preservation depended entirely on God’s provision through the vessel He had commanded Noah to build. The ark’s coming to rest marked the end of the Flood’s destructive power and the beginning of a new era, foreshadowing the rest, salvation, and peace believers find in Christ. Psa 107:29 He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea… on the mountains of Ararat. Ararat refers to the mountainous region north of Mesopotamia, in the area of modern eastern Turkey. The ark rested in this highland region before the waters continued to withdraw and the earth became habitable again. 2Ki 19:37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple… And the waters continued to recede The flood did not disappear at once. God steadily removed the waters while Noah, his family, and the animals remained in the ark, dependent on His provision and timing. Job 12:15 If He holds back the waters, they dry up,… until the tenth month, The stated month places the event within the continuing chronology of the flood year and shows the long duration of Noah’s confinement in the ark. 2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem… and on the first day of the tenth month On a definite day, God gave visible evidence that the judgment waters were withdrawing and the earth was becoming habitable again. Exo 40:2 On the first day of the first month, set up the tabernacle… the tops of the mountains became visible. The first exposed land offered Noah hope that the flood was ending. The reappearance of the mountains marked the beginning of the earth’s restoration after God’s judgment. Gen 7:19-20 Finally, the waters completely prevailed upon the earth,…
Noah Sends a Raven and a DoveNoah waited forty days after the rain had stopped before seeking further evidence that the floodwaters were receding. The period marked a continued time of patience and dependence on God’s direction as the earth remained covered by water. Gen 7:17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth… Noah opened the window From within the ark, Noah opened the window to observe conditions outside and to send out birds. After months of confinement, the opening provided the first opportunity to test whether dry land was beginning to appear. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … he had made in the ark Noah had built the ark according to God’s instructions, and its window had provided light and ventilation during the flood. Now it became the means by which Noah began to assess the changing world beyond the vessel that had preserved his family and the animals. Gen 6:16 You are to make a roof for the ark, finish its walls… and sent out a raven. Noah released a raven to assess conditions beyond the ark. As a scavenger, it could survive without returning to him for food. 1Ki 17:4-6 And you are to drink from the brook, and I have commanded… It kept flying back and forth The raven remained in the flooded region, finding no settled place on dry land. Its restless movement showed that the earth was not yet ready for human and animal life to leave the ark. Isa 31:5 Like birds hovering overhead, so the LORD of Hosts… until the waters had dried up from the earth. God’s judgment by water was giving way to restoration as the land gradually reappeared. Job 12:15 If He holds back the waters, they dry up,… Then Noah sent out a dove After releasing the raven, Noah sent a dove to search for evidence that the land was becoming habitable again. The dove’s return would provide a clearer indication of conditions beyond the ark. Lev 14:6-7 And he is to take the live bird together with the cedar wood… to see if the waters had receded Noah was waiting for confirmation that God’s judgment through the flood was coming to an end and that the earth was being restored. Psa 104:6-9 You covered it with the deep like a garment;… from the surface of the ground. Dry land was necessary for human and animal life to begin again outside the ark. The receding waters marked the renewal of the world God had preserved through Noah. Gen 1:9-10 And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered… But the dove found no place to rest her foot, The waters still covered the land, leaving no exposed ground or vegetation where the dove could perch. Her search confirmed that the flood had not yet receded enough for life outside the ark to resume. Deu 28:65 Among those nations you will find no repose,… and she returned to him in the ark, The dove returned to Noah because the ark remained the only place of safety above the waters. Its return showed that God’s appointed refuge was still necessary for Noah, his family, and the creatures preserved with them. Gen 7:23 And every living thing on the face of the earth… because the waters were still covering the surface of all the earth. The flood had not yet released its hold on the earth. God’s judgment had been complete, and the renewed world would emerge only in His timing. Gen 7:19 Finally, the waters completely prevailed upon the earth,… So he reached out his hand and brought her back inside the ark. Noah received the dove and cared for it within the ark, continuing his faithful stewardship of the living creatures entrusted to him. Gen 19:10 But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house… Noah waited seven more days Noah continued to proceed carefully, allowing time for the waters to recede and seeking clear evidence that the earth was habitable. His patience reflects confidence in God’s preservation and direction after the flood. 1Sa 13:8 And Saul waited seven days for the time appointed… and again sent out the dove The dove’s return or absence would indicate whether vegetation and dry ground had emerged. Noah used this simple, practical means to assess conditions outside the ark. Mat 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water.… from the ark. The ark remained God’s appointed refuge until it was safe for Noah, his family, and the animals to leave and begin life again on the renewed earth. Gen 9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark… And behold, The return of the dove marks a decisive sign that conditions outside the ark were changing. Gen 18:2 And Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.… the dove returned to him in the evening Noah had sent the dove to determine whether the waters had receded enough for life to reappear on the land. Unlike the raven, the dove returned to the ark, showing that it had not yet found a suitable place to settle. Isa 60:8 Who are these who fly like clouds, like doves… with a freshly plucked olive leaf in her beak. The fresh leaf showed that vegetation was growing again above the waters. Olive trees were common in the region and could survive in areas where the floodwaters had begun to withdraw. Jer 11:16 The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree… So Noah knew that the waters had receded from the earth. The leaf gave Noah clear evidence that the flood was ending and that God was preserving the earth for renewed life. Gen 9:11 And I establish My covenant with you: Never again… And Noah waited seven more days Noah continued to wait patiently for clear evidence that the earth was habitable. His careful actions show trust in God’s preservation and timing after the flood. Gen 7:4 For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth… and sent out the dove again, The dove was released to test whether vegetation and dry ground had become established beyond the ark. Lev 14:7 Seven times he shall sprinkle the one to be cleansed… but this time she did not return to him. Her absence showed that she had found a place to rest and live outside the ark. The floodwaters had receded enough for life to begin again, confirming that God was bringing Noah, his family, and the animals into a restored world. Pro 27:8 Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man…
Exiting the ArkNoah’s age places the event within the detailed chronology of the flood and confirms that he and his family had remained in the ark for many months. Gen 7:6 Now Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came… on the first day of the first month, On the first day of the new year, Noah saw clear evidence that the waters of judgment were receding from the earth. Ezr 7:9 He had begun the journey from Babylon… the waters had dried up from the earth. The land was emerging again, prepared for life to begin anew under God’s covenant mercy. Jos 4:23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan… So Noah removed the covering from the ark After patiently waiting for God’s direction, Noah removed the ark’s covering and examined the conditions outside. Gen 6:14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms… and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. Though the earth was not yet fully ready for the family and animals to leave the ark, Noah could see that God had preserved them and restored the land. Gen 1:9-10 And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered… By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, more than a year had passed since the flood began. This precise date marks the completion of God’s judgment on the corrupt world and His preservation of Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … the earth was fully dry. The waters had receded, and the land was ready for Noah and those with him to leave the ark. God restored the earth for human life, marking a new beginning under His covenant care. Gen 1:9-10 And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered… Then God said to Noah, After the Flood judgment had passed, God spoke directly to Noah and directed him to leave the ark. Noah had preserved human and animal life through obedience to God’s command, and he now became the head of a renewed world. God’s words marked the transition from judgment to restoration and prepared the way for the covenant He would establish with Noah and all living creatures. Noah’s role in preserving life points forward to Christ, the one mediator between God and humanity. Gen 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark… “Come out of the ark, God ends Noah’s confinement after the Flood waters have receded and the earth has dried. The ark had preserved its passengers through judgment and now gives way to life on the renewed earth. Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,… you and your wife, Noah and his wife leave together as the first household of the new world. Their preserved marriage reflects God’s continuing purpose for human family life. Gen 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother… along with your sons and their wives. All eight survivors emerge to begin the repopulation of the earth. Through these families, humanity would continue after the destruction of the Flood. Gen 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you,… Bring out all the living creatures that are with you— God’s judgment had ended, and Noah was commanded to release the animals preserved in the ark. Their survival demonstrated God’s care for the whole created order and entrusted Noah’s family with renewed responsibility over the earth. Gen 7:14-15 they and every kind of wild animal, livestock, … birds, livestock, and everything that crawls upon the ground— The animals represented the broad diversity of life God had created and preserved. Each kind emerged from the ark to resume its place in the world after the flood. Gen 1:24-25 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures”… so that they can spread out over the earth Life was to be restored across the land rather than remain gathered in one place. The command marked the beginning of a renewed world, with the earth again inhabited by creatures according to God’s design. Gen 10:32 From these the nations of the earth spread out… and be fruitful and multiply upon it.” God renewed the blessing given at creation, directing living things to increase and fill the earth. The flood had not overturned His purpose for creation; it became the setting for a new beginning under His covenant with Noah. Gen 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply… So Noah came out, Noah’s departure from the ark marks the close of the Flood and the beginning of life on a cleansed earth. God had preserved him through judgment and now brought him into a renewed world. Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,… along with his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth would become the fathers of the families and nations that spread across the earth after the Flood. Through them, God preserved the human race and continued His purpose for mankind. Gen 9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark… and his wife Noah’s wife shared in the obedience, endurance, and preservation of the ark. Her presence shows that God sustained the family unit through the catastrophe. Gen 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you,… and his sons’ wives. The wives of Noah’s sons were essential to the repopulation of the earth. Together, these eight survivors formed the beginning of the post-Flood world and would carry out God’s command to multiply. Gen 7:7 And Noah and his wife, with his sons and their wives… Every living creature, God preserved the full range of animal life through the flood, demonstrating His care for the world He created. His covenant would extend beyond Noah and his family to all living beings. Gen 9:10 and with every living creature that was with you—… every creeping thing, Even the smallest animals were included in God’s provision. None were overlooked in the restoration of the earth after judgment. Gen 1:24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures”… and every bird— The birds leaving the ark showed that the land was ready to be inhabited again. Their return to the open sky marked the renewal of the created order. Gen 7:14 they and every kind of wild animal, livestock, … everything that moves upon the earth— The animals emerged alive according to God’s purpose, filling the earth once more after the devastation of the flood. Gen 9:3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you;… came out of the ark, Noah’s ark had served as the appointed refuge from judgment. Those within it entered a cleansed world under God’s protection and command. Gen 9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark… kind by kind. The animals departed in the ordered groups God had established in creation, preserving the distinction and fruitfulness of each kind. Gen 6:20 Two of every kind of bird and animal and…
Noah Builds an AltarAfter leaving the ark, Noah’s first recorded act was worship. The altar expressed gratitude for God’s preservation and acknowledged that life after the flood depended wholly on His mercy. Noah approached God as the righteous head of his family, offering sacrifice in response to divine deliverance. Gen 12:7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,… And taking from every kind of clean animal and clean bird, The distinction between clean and unclean animals was already known before the Mosaic Law, as seen in God’s instructions for the animals brought into the ark. Noah offered animals God had designated as acceptable, demonstrating obedience and reverence rather than worship according to human preference. Lev 11:1-47 The LORD spoke again to Moses and Aaron, telling them,… he offered burnt offerings on the altar. These offerings were wholly given to God, portraying complete devotion and thanksgiving. Noah’s sacrifice became the first act of worship in the renewed world and anticipated the sacrificial worship later established for Israel. It also points forward to Christ, whose perfect sacrifice fully accomplished atonement for sin. Lev 1:3-17 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,… When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, Noah’s burnt offerings expressed worship, gratitude, and dependence on God after the flood. God accepted the sacrifice as the response of a man who trusted and obeyed Him. Lev 1:9 The entrails and legs must be washed with water,… He said in His heart, God determined within Himself how He would deal with the world after the flood. His decision came from His sovereign purpose and mercy. Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, … “Never again will I curse the ground because of man, Though human sin had brought judgment upon creation, God promised not to bring another universal curse upon the ground through a flood. The world would continue under His sustaining care. Gen 3:17 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened… even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. The flood had not removed humanity’s sinful nature. People remained inclined toward evil from early life, showing that the need for redemption extended beyond outward judgment. Deu 31:21 And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them… And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done. God pledged that the destruction of the flood would not be repeated. This promise prepared the way for the covenant He would establish with Noah and all living creatures. Gen 9:11 And I establish My covenant with you: Never again… As long as the earth endures, God assures Noah that the created order will continue after the flood, despite the judgment that has devastated the world. Psa 119:90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations;… seedtime and harvest, The agricultural rhythms on which human and animal life depend will remain in place, providing for the ongoing cultivation and gathering of food. Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,… cold and heat, The varying conditions of the earth will continue under God’s rule, preserving the patterns necessary for life. Job 37:9-10 The tempest comes from its chamber, and the cold… summer and winter, The yearly cycle will remain reliable, allowing people to live, work, and prepare according to established seasons. Psa 74:17 You set all the boundaries of the earth;… day and night The regular alternation established at creation will not be overturned by the flood or by human sin. Jer 31:35 Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day… shall never cease.” God’s covenantal promise secures the stability of the natural world for the duration of the present earth. Jer 33:20-25 This is what the LORD says: If you can break My covenant… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com.
