The Year of Yahweh’s Favor
(Luke 4:16–30)
1 ר֛וּחַ (The Spirit) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH) עָלָ֑י (is upon me)
יַ֡עַן (because) מָשַׁח֩ (has anointed) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֹתִ֜י (me)
לְבַשֵּׂ֣ר (to bring good news) עֲנָוִ֗ים (to the poor);
שְׁלָחַ֙נִי֙ (He has sent me) לַחֲבֹ֣שׁ (to bind the wounds) לְנִשְׁבְּרֵי־ (of the broken) לֵ֔ב (of heart),
לִקְרֹ֤א (to proclaim) לִשְׁבוּיִם֙ (to the captives), דְּר֔וֹר (liberty)
וְלַאֲסוּרִ֖ים (and to the bound); פְּקַח־ (the opening) קֽוֹחַ׃ (of their bonds).
2 לִקְרֹ֤א (To proclaim) שְׁנַת־ (the year) רָצוֹן֙ (of the favor) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),
וְי֥וֹם (and the day) נָקָ֖ם (of vengeance) לֵאלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (of our God);
לְנַחֵ֖ם (to comfort) כָּל־ (all) אֲבֵלִֽים׃ (in mourning);
3 לָשׂ֣וּם׀ (to appoint) לַאֲבֵלֵ֣י (to mourners) צִיּ֗וֹן (in Zion),
לָתֵת֩ (to give) לָהֶ֨ם (to them) פְּאֵ֜ר (beauty) תַּ֣חַת (instead) אֵ֗פֶר (of ashes),
שֶׁ֤מֶן (the oil) שָׂשׂוֹן֙ (of joy) תַּ֣חַת (instead) אֵ֔בֶל (of mourning),
מַעֲטֵ֣ה (a garment) תְהִלָּ֔ה (of praise) תַּ֖חַת (instead) ר֣וּחַ (of a spirit) כֵּהָ֑ה (of dullness);
וְקֹרָ֤א (and will be called) לָהֶם֙ (to them) אֵילֵ֣י (oaks) הַצֶּ֔דֶק (of righteousness),
מַטַּ֥ע (the planting) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְהִתְפָּאֵֽר׃ (for His being glorified).
4 וּבָנוּ֙ (And they will rebuild) חָרְב֣וֹת (the ruins), עוֹלָ֔ם (of old)
שֹׁמְמ֥וֹת (desolations), רִֽאשֹׁנִ֖ים (the former) יְקוֹמֵ֑מוּ (and they will raise up)
וְחִדְּשׁוּ֙ (and they will make new) עָ֣רֵי (cities), חֹ֔רֶב (the ruined)
שֹׁמְמ֖וֹת (the desolations) דּ֥וֹר (of generation) וָדֽוֹר׃ (and generation).
5 וְעָמְד֣וּ (And will stand) זָרִ֔ים (strangers) וְרָע֖וּ (and pasture) צֹאנְכֶ֑ם (your⁺ flocks),
וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) נֵכָ֔ר (of the foreigner) אִכָּרֵיכֶ֖ם (will be your⁺ plowmen) וְכֹרְמֵיכֶֽם׃ (and your⁺ vinedressers).
6 וְאַתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺) כֹּהֲנֵ֤י (the priests) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH); תִּקָּרֵ֔אוּ (will be called)
מְשָׁרְתֵ֣י (as servants) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (of our God). יֵאָמֵ֖ר (They will speak) לָכֶ֑ם (to you⁺)
חֵ֤יל (the riches) גּוֹיִם֙ (of the nations), תֹּאכֵ֔לוּ (you⁺ will eat)
וּבִכְבוֹדָ֖ם (and in their glory) תִּתְיַמָּֽרוּ׃ (you⁺ will boast).
7 תַּ֤חַת (Instead) בָּשְׁתְּכֶם֙ (of your⁺ shame) מִשְׁנֶ֔ה (double); וּכְלִמָּ֖ה (and dishonor)
יָרֹ֣נּוּ (they will rejoice) חֶלְקָ֑ם (in their portion).
לָכֵ֤ן (So that) בְּאַרְצָם֙ (in their land) מִשְׁנֶ֣ה (double); יִירָ֔שׁוּ (they will possess)
שִׂמְחַ֥ת (joy) עוֹלָ֖ם (forever) תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה (will be) לָהֶֽם׃ (unto them).
8 כִּ֣י (For) אֲנִ֤י (I am) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH)
אֹהֵ֣ב (loving) מִשְׁפָּ֔ט (justice), שֹׂנֵ֥א (and hating) גָזֵ֖ל (robbery) בְּעוֹלָ֑ה (with injustice);
וְנָתַתִּ֤י (and I will give) פְעֻלָּתָם֙ (their recompense) בֶּאֱמֶ֔ת (in truth),
וּבְרִ֥ית (and a covenant) עוֹלָ֖ם (forever) אֶכְר֥וֹת (I will cut) לָהֶֽם׃ (with them).
9 וְנוֹדַ֤ע (And will be known) בַּגּוֹיִם֙ (among the nations), זַרְעָ֔ם (their seed)
וְצֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֖ם (and their offspring) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הָעַמִּ֑ים (of the peoples).
כָּל־ (All) רֹֽאֵיהֶם֙ (those seeing them) יַכִּיר֔וּם (will acknowledge them)
כִּ֛י (that) הֵ֥ם (they are) זֶ֖רַע (the seed) בֵּרַ֥ךְ (blessed) יְהוָֽה׃ס (by YHWH).
10 שׂ֧וֹשׂ (Rejoicing) אָשִׂ֣ישׂ (I will rejoice) בַּֽיהוָ֗ה (in YHWH),
תָּגֵ֤ל (will be joyful) נַפְשִׁי֙ (my soul) בֵּֽאלֹהַ֔י (in my God);
כִּ֤י (for) הִלְבִּישַׁ֙נִי֙ (He has clothed me) בִּגְדֵי־ (in the garments) יֶ֔שַׁע (of salvation),
מְעִ֥יל (and with the robe) צְדָקָ֖ה (of righteousness), יְעָטָ֑נִי (He has covered me)
כֶּֽחָתָן֙ (like the bridegroom) יְכַהֵ֣ן (putting on a priestly) פְּאֵ֔ר (headdress),
וְכַכַּלָּ֖ה (and like the bride) תַּעְדֶּ֥ה (adorning herself) כֵלֶֽיהָ׃ (with her jewels).
11 כִּ֤י (For) כָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (as the earth) תּוֹצִ֣יא (brings forth) צִמְחָ֔הּ (its sprout),
וּכְגַנָּ֖ה (and as the garden) זֵרוּעֶ֣יהָ (the things sown in it) תַצְמִ֑יחַ (makes sprout);
כֵּ֣ן׀ (so) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) יַצְמִ֤יחַ (will make sprout) צְדָקָה֙ (righteousness)
וּתְהִלָּ֔ה (and praise) נֶ֖גֶד (before) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).
