Jeremiah 15

Judgment to Continue

1  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (Said) יְהוָה֙ (and YHWH) אֵלַ֔י (to me) אִם־ (Though) יַעֲמֹ֨ד (stood) מֹשֶׁ֤ה (Moses) וּשְׁמוּאֵל֙ (and Samuel) לְפָנַ֔י (before Me) אֵ֥ין (is not) נַפְשִׁ֖י (My soul) אֶל־ (toward) הָעָ֣ם (people); הַזֶּ֑ה (this) שַׁלַּ֥ח (Cast them) מֵֽעַל־ (before) פָּנַ֖י (My face), וְיֵצֵֽאוּ׃ (and let them go away). 2  וְהָיָ֛ה (And it will come to pass), כִּֽי־ (if) יֹאמְר֥וּ (they say) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you) אָ֣נָה (Where) נֵצֵ֑א (should we go)? וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ (That you shall say) אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (to them) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH);

אֲשֶׁ֨ר (Those) לַמָּ֤וֶת (unto death), לַמָּ֙וֶת֙ (unto death);

וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and those) לַחֶ֙רֶב֙ (unto the sword), לַחֶ֔רֶב (unto the sword);

וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and those) לָֽרָעָב֙ (unto the famine), לָֽרָעָ֔ב (unto the famine);

וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and those) לַשְּׁבִ֖י (unto captivity), לַשֶּֽׁבִי׃ (unto captivity).

3  וּפָקַדְתִּ֨י (And I will appoint) עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (over them) אַרְבַּ֤ע (four) מִשְׁפָּחוֹת֙ (kinds), נְאֻם־ (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); אֶת־ (-) הַחֶ֣רֶב (the sword) לַֽהֲרֹ֔ג (to slay), וְאֶת־ (and) הַכְּלָבִ֖ים (the dogs) לִסְחֹ֑ב (to drag), וְאֶת־ (and) ע֧וֹף (the bird) הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם (of the heavens), וְאֶת־ (and) בֶּהֱמַ֥ת (the beast) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the earth), לֶאֱכֹ֥ל (to devour) וּלְהַשְׁחִֽית׃ (and to destroy). 4  וּנְתַתִּ֣ים (And I will set them) לִזְוָעָה (as a horror) לְכֹ֖ל (to all) מַמְלְכ֣וֹת (the kingdoms) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth), בִּ֠גְלַל (because of) מְנַשֶּׁ֤ה (Manasseh) בֶן־ (son) יְחִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (of Hezekiah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), עַ֥ל (for) אֲשֶׁר־ (that which) עָשָׂ֖ה (he did) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

5  כִּ֠י (For) מִֽי־ (who) יַחְמֹ֤ל (will have pity) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (on you) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (O Jerusalem)?

וּמִ֖י (Or who) יָנ֣וּד (will mourn) לָ֑ךְ (for you)

וּמִ֣י (or who) יָס֔וּר (will turn aside)

לִשְׁאֹ֥ל (to ask) לְשָׁלֹ֖ם (well-being) לָֽךְ׃ (about your)?

6  אַ֣תְּ (You) נָטַ֥שְׁתְּ (have forsaken) אֹתִ֛י (Me) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH),

אָח֣וֹר (backward). תֵּלֵ֑כִי (You have gone)

וָאַ֨ט (and I have stretched out) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֤י (My hand) עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (against you)

וָֽאַשְׁחִיתֵ֔ךְ (and will destroy you)

נִלְאֵ֖יתִי (for I am weary) הִנָּחֵֽם׃ (of showing compassion).

7  וָאֶזְרֵ֥ם (And I will scatter them) בְּמִזְרֶ֖ה (with a pitchfork)

בְּשַׁעֲרֵ֣י (at the gates) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land);

שִׁכַּ֤לְתִּי (I will bereave) אִבַּ֙דְתִּי֙ (and destroy) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּ֔י (My people),

מִדַּרְכֵיהֶ֖ם (from their ways) לוֹא־ (who not) שָֽׁבוּ׃ (have turned).

8  עָֽצְמוּ־ (Will be more numerous) לִ֤י (to Me) אַלְמְנֹתָו֙ (its widows)

מֵח֣וֹל (than the sand) יַמִּ֔ים (of the seas);

הֵבֵ֨אתִי (I will bring) לָהֶ֥ם (upon them) עַל־ (against) אֵ֛ם (the mother) בָּח֖וּר (of the young man)

שֹׁדֵ֣ד (a destroyer) בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם (at noonday);

הִפַּ֤לְתִּי (and I will make fall) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (on them) פִּתְאֹ֔ם (suddenly),

עִ֖יר (anguish) וּבֶהָלֽוֹת׃ (and terror).

9  אֻמְלְלָ֞ה (She languishes); יֹלֶ֣דֶת (who has borne) הַשִּׁבְעָ֗ה (seven)

נָפְחָ֥ה (she has breathed) נַפְשָׁ֛הּ (her last);

בָּאָה (has gone down) שִׁמְשָׁ֛הּ (her sun) בְּעֹ֥ד (while yet) יוֹמָ֖ם (day);

בּ֣וֹשָׁה (she has been ashamed) וְחָפֵ֑רָה (and disgraved).

וּשְׁאֵֽרִיתָ֗ם (And the remnant of them) לַחֶ֧רֶב (to the sword) אֶתֵּ֛ן (I will give)

לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) אֹיְבֵיהֶ֖ם (of their enemies),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

Jeremiah’s Woe

10  אֽוֹי־ (Woe) לִ֣י (to me) אִמִּ֔י (my mother),

כִּ֣י (for) יְלִדְתִּ֗נִי (you gave birth to me)

אִ֥ישׁ (a man) רִ֛יב (of strife) וְאִ֥ישׁ (and a man) מָד֖וֹן (of contention)

לְכָל־ (in all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land)!

לֹֽא־ (Not) נָשִׁ֥יתִי (I have lent), וְלֹא־ (and not) נָֽשׁוּ־ (have they lent on usury); בִ֖י (to me)

כֻּלֹּ֥ה (all of them) מְקַלְלַֽונִי׃ס (curse me).

11  אָמַ֣ר (Said), יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

אִם־ (Truly) לֹ֥א (-) שָׁרוֹתִךָ (with your remnant) לְט֑וֹב (it will be well)

אִם־ (truly) ל֣וֹא׀ (not) הִפְגַּ֣עְתִּֽי (have I interceded) בְךָ֗ (for you) בְּעֵ֥ת־ (in the time)

רָעָ֛ה (of adversity) וּבְעֵ֥ת (and in the time)

צָרָ֖ה (of distress) אֶת־ (-) הָאֹיֵֽב׃ (with the enemy).

12  הֲיָרֹ֨עַ (Can one break) בַּרְזֶ֧ל׀ (iron)

בַּרְזֶ֛ל (iron) מִצָּפ֖וֹן (from the north) וּנְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ (and bronze)?

13  חֵילְךָ֧ (Your wealth) וְאוֹצְרוֹתֶ֛יךָ (and your treasures)

לָבַ֥ז (as plunder) אֶתֵּ֖ן (I will give) לֹ֣א (without) בִמְחִ֑יר (price),

וּבְכָל־ (even for all) חַטֹּאותֶ֖יךָ (your sins),

וּבְכָל־ (even in all) גְּבוּלֶֽיךָ׃ (your borders).

14  וְהַֽעֲבַרְתִּי֙ (And I will make you pass over) אֶת־ (with) אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ (your enemies)

בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (into a land) לֹ֣א (that not); יָדָ֑עְתָּ (you do know)

כִּֽי־ (for) אֵ֛שׁ (a fire) קָדְחָ֥ה (is kindled)

בְאַפִּ֖י (in My anger), עֲלֵיכֶ֥ם (against you⁺) תּוּקָֽד׃ס (that will burn).

15  אַתָּ֧ה (You) יָדַ֣עְתָּ (You have known), יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH),

זָכְרֵ֤נִי (remember me) וּפָקְדֵ֙נִי֙ (and attend to me)

וְהִנָּ֤קֶם (and take vengeance) לִי֙ (for me) מֵרֹ֣דְפַ֔י (on my pursuers);

אַל־ (do not) לְאֶ֥רֶךְ (in Your long-) אַפְּךָ֖ (suffering); תִּקָּחֵ֑נִי (take me away)

דַּ֕ע (know) שְׂאֵתִ֥י (I have suffered) עָלֶ֖יךָ (for Your sake) חֶרְפָּֽה׃ (rebuke).

16  נִמְצְא֤וּ (Were found), דְבָרֶ֙יךָ֙ (Your words) וָאֹ֣כְלֵ֔ם (and I consumed them)

וַיְהִ֤י (was) דְבָרֶיךָ (and Your word) לִ֔י (to me) לְשָׂשׂ֖וֹן (the joy)

וּלְשִׂמְחַ֣ת (and the gladness) לְבָבִ֑י (of my heart);

כִּֽי־ (for) נִקְרָ֤א (am called) שִׁמְךָ֙ (by Your name), עָלַ֔י (I)

יְהוָ֖ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ס (of Hosts).

17  לֹֽא־ (Not) יָשַׁ֥בְתִּי (I did sit) בְסוֹד־ (in the counsel) מְשַׂחֲקִ֖ים (of the mockers),

וָֽאֶעְלֹ֑ז (no rejoice);

מִפְּנֵ֤י (because) יָֽדְךָ֙ (of Your hand); בָּדָ֣ד (alone) יָשַׁ֔בְתִּי (I sat)

כִּֽי־ (for) זַ֖עַם (with indignation) מִלֵּאתָֽנִי׃ס (You have filled me).

18  לָ֣מָּה (Why) הָיָ֤ה (is) כְאֵבִי֙ (my pain) נֶ֔צַח (perpetual),

וּמַכָּתִ֖י (and my wound) אֲנוּשָׁ֑ה֙ (incurable),

מֵֽאֲנָה֙ (refusing) הֵֽרָפֵ֔א (to be healed)?

הָי֨וֹ (Being) תִֽהְיֶ֥ה (will You be) לִי֙ (to me) כְּמ֣וֹ (like) אַכְזָ֔ב (a liar),

מַ֖יִם (waters) לֹ֥א (that) נֶאֱמָֽנוּ׃ס (fail)?

Yahweh’s Promise

19  לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH),

אִם־ (if) תָּשׁ֤וּב (you turn back), וַאֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֙ (then I will restore you),

לְפָנַ֣י (before My face) תַּֽעֲמֹ֔ד (you will stand)

וְאִם־ (and if) תּוֹצִ֥יא (you bring out) יָקָ֛ר (the precious things) מִזּוֹלֵ֖ל (from the vile),

כְּפִ֣י (as My mouth). תִֽהְיֶ֑ה (You will be)

יָשֻׁ֤בוּ (turn back) הֵ֙מָּה֙ (let them) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you)

וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you) לֹֽא־ (not) תָשׁ֥וּב (shall return) אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (to them).

20  וּנְתַתִּ֜יךָ (And I will give you to be) לָעָ֣ם (to people) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) לְחוֹמַ֤ת (as a wall);

נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (of bronze) בְּצוּרָ֔ה (fortified)

וְנִלְחֲמ֥וּ (and they shall make war) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (against you)

וְלֹא־ (and not) י֣וּכְלוּ (they shall prevail) לָ֑ךְ (against you)

כִּֽי־ (for) אִתְּךָ֥ (with you) אֲנִ֛י (I am) לְהוֹשִֽׁיעֲךָ֥ (to save you) וּלְהַצִּילֶ֖ךָ (and to deliver you)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

21  וְהִצַּלְתִּ֖יךָ (And I will deliver you) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) רָעִ֑ים (of the wicked ones),

וּפְדִתִ֖יךָ (and I will ransom you) מִכַּ֥ף (from the grip) עָרִצִֽים׃פ (of the terrible).
