Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit
(Luke 23:44–49)

לַמְנַצֵּ֗חַ (For the one directing). מִזְמ֥וֹר (A Psalm) לְדָוִֽד׃ (of David).

1בְּךָ֖ (In You), יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH), חָ֭סִיתִי (I have taken refuge);

אַל־ (do not) אֵב֣וֹשָׁה (let me be ashamed); לְעוֹלָ֑ם (forever)

בְּצִדְקָתְךָ֥ (in Your righteousness) פַלְּטֵֽנִי׃ (deliver me).

2  הַטֵּ֤ה (Incline) אֵלַ֨י׀ (to me) אָזְנְךָ֮ (Your ear);

מְהֵרָ֪ה (and quickly) הַצִּ֫ילֵ֥נִי (deliver me).

הֱיֵ֤ה (Be) לִ֨י׀ (for me) לְֽצוּר־ (as a rock) מָ֭עוֹז (of refuge),

לְבֵ֥ית (as a house) מְצוּד֗וֹת (of strongholds) לְהוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ (to save me).

3  כִּֽי־ (For) סַלְעִ֣י (my rock) וּמְצוּדָתִ֣י (and my stronghold) אָ֑תָּה (You are),

וּלְמַ֥עַן (and for the sake) שִׁ֝מְךָ֗ (of Your name) תַּֽנְחֵ֥נִי (You will lead me) וּֽתְנַהֲלֵֽנִי׃ (and guide me).

4  תּוֹצִיאֵ֗נִי (You will bring me out) מֵרֶ֣שֶׁת (from the net) ז֭וּ (that) טָ֣מְנוּ (they have hidden) לִ֑י (for me),

כִּֽי־ (because) אַ֝תָּה (You are) מָֽעוּזִּֽי׃ (my refuge).

5  בְּיָדְךָ֮ (Into Your hand) אַפְקִ֪יד (I commit) ר֫וּחִ֥י (my spirit);

פָּדִ֖יתָה (may You redeem) אוֹתִ֥י (me), יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), אֵ֣ל (God) אֱמֶֽת׃ (of truth).

6  שָׂנֵ֗אתִי (I have hated) הַשֹּׁמְרִ֥ים (those serving) הַבְלֵי־ (idols) שָׁ֑וְא (worthless),

וַ֝אֲנִ֗י (and I) אֶל־ (toward) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) בָּטָֽחְתִּי׃ (place my trust).

7  אָגִ֥ילָה (I will rejoice) וְאֶשְׂמְחָ֗ה (and be glad) בְּחַ֫סְדֶּ֥ךָ (in Your loving devotion),

אֲשֶׁ֣ר (in that) רָ֭אִיתָ (You have seen) אֶת־ (-) עָנְיִ֑י (my affliction);

יָ֝דַ֗עְתָּ (and you knew) בְּצָר֥וֹת (of the distress) נַפְשִֽׁי׃ (of my soul).

8  וְלֹ֣א (And not) הִ֭סְגַּרְתַּנִי (did You shut me up) בְּיַד־ (in the hand) אוֹיֵ֑ב (of the enemy);

הֶֽעֱמַ֖דְתָּ (You set) בַמֶּרְחָ֣ב (on a broad place) רַגְלָֽי׃ (my feet).

9  חָנֵּ֥נִי (Show favor to me), יְהוָה֮ (O YHWH),

כִּ֤י (for) צַ֫ר־ (in distress) לִ֥י (I am);

עָשְׁשָׁ֖ה (have wasted away) בְכַ֥עַס (with grief) עֵינִ֗י (my eye),

נַפְשִׁ֥י (my soul), וּבִטְנִֽי׃ (and my belly).

10  כִּ֤י (For) כָל֪וּ (has been consumed) בְיָג֡וֹן (with grief) חַיַּי֮ (my life),

וּשְׁנוֹתַ֪י (and my years) בַּאֲנָ֫חָ֥ה (with groaning);

כָּשַׁ֣ל (fails) בַּעֲוֺנִ֣י (in my iniquity) כֹחִ֑י (my power),

וַעֲצָמַ֥י (and my bones) עָשֵֽׁשׁוּ׃ (are wasting away).

11  מִכָּל־ (Among all) צֹרְרַ֨י (my enemies) הָיִ֪יתִי (I am) חֶרְפָּ֡ה (an object of scorn),

וְלִשֲׁכֵנַ֨י׀ (and to my neighbors) מְאֹד֮ (exceedingly),

וּפַ֪חַד (and a source of dread) לִֽמְיֻדָּ֫עָ֥י (to those who know me)—

רֹאַ֥י (and those seeing me) בַּח֑וּץ (in the street) נָדְד֥וּ (flee) מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ (from me).

12  נִ֭שְׁכַּחְתִּי (I have been forgotten) כְּמֵ֣ת (like a dead man) מִלֵּ֑ב (from the heart);

הָ֝יִ֗יתִי (I am) כִּכְלִ֥י (like a vessel) אֹבֵֽד׃ (perishing).

13  כִּ֤י (For) שָׁמַ֨עְתִּי׀ (I have heard) דִּבַּ֥ת (the slander) רַבִּים֮ (of many);

מָג֪וֹר (terror) מִסָּ֫בִ֥יב (from round about);

בְּהִוָּסְדָ֣ם (in their taking counsel) יַ֣חַד (together) עָלַ֑י (against me)

לָקַ֖חַת (to take) נַפְשִׁ֣י (my life), זָמָֽמוּ׃ (they have plotted).

14  וַאֲנִ֤י׀ (And I) עָלֶ֣יךָ (in You) בָטַ֣חְתִּי (I have trusted), יְהוָ֑ה (O YHWH);

אָ֝מַ֗רְתִּי (I say), אֱלֹהַ֥י (My God) אָֽתָּה׃ (You are).

15  בְּיָדְךָ֥ (In Your hand) עִתֹּתָ֑י (are my times);

הַצִּ֘ילֵ֤נִי (deliver me) מִיַּד־ (from the hand) א֝וֹיְבַ֗י (of my enemies),

וּמֵרֹדְפָֽי׃ (and from those pursuing me).

16  הָאִ֣ירָה (Make shine) פָ֭נֶיךָ (Your face) עַל־ (upon) עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (Your servant);

ה֖וֹשִׁיעֵ֣נִי (save me) בְחַסְדֶּֽךָ׃ (in Your loving devotion).

17  יְֽהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), אַל־ (do not) אֵ֭בוֹשָׁה (do let me be ashamed),

כִּ֣י (for) קְרָאתִ֑יךָ (I have called to You).

יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ (Let them be ashamed) רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים (the wicked);

יִדְּמ֥וּ (let them be silent) לִשְׁאֽוֹל׃ (in Sheol).

18  תֵּ֥אָלַ֗מְנָה (Let become dumb) שִׂפְתֵ֫י (the lips) שָׁ֥קֶר (of falsehood)

הַדֹּבְר֖וֹת (those speaking) עַל־ (against) צַדִּ֥יק (the righteous) עָתָ֗ק (with arrogance),

בְּגַאֲוָ֥ה (in pride) וָבֽוּז׃ (and contempt).

19  מָ֤ה (How) רַֽב־ (great is) טוּבְךָ֮ (Your goodness),

אֲשֶׁר־ (which) צָפַ֪נְתָּ (You have laid up) לִּֽירֵ֫אֶ֥יךָ (for those fearing You),

פָּ֭עַלְתָּ (which you have prepared) לַחֹסִ֣ים (for those taking refuge) בָּ֑ךְ (in You)

נֶ֝֗גֶד (before) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אָדָם׃ (of man)!

20  תַּסְתִּירֵ֤ם׀ (You shall hide them) בְּסֵ֥תֶר (in the hidden place) פָּנֶיךָ֮ (of Your presence)

מֵֽרֻכְסֵ֫י (from the plots) אִ֥ישׁ (of man);

תִּצְפְּנֵ֥ם (you shall store them) בְּסֻכָּ֗ה (in a shelter)

מֵרִ֥יב (from the strife) לְשֹׁנֽוֹת׃ (of tongues).

21  בָּר֥וּךְ (Blessed be) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH),

כִּ֥י (for) הִפְלִ֘יא (He has made marvelous) חַסְדּ֥וֹ (His loving devotion) לִ֝֗י (to me)

בְּעִ֣יר (in a city) מָצֽוֹר׃ (under siege).

22  וַאֲנִ֤י׀ (And for I) אָ֘מַ֤רְתִּי (said) בְחָפְזִ֗י (in my haste),

נִגְרַזְתִּי֮ (I am cut off) מִנֶּ֪גֶד (from before) עֵ֫ינֶ֥יךָ (Your eyes)!

אָכֵ֗ן (Surely) שָׁ֭מַעְתָּ (You heard) ק֥וֹל (the voice) תַּחֲנוּנַ֗י (of my supplications)

בְּשַׁוְּעִ֥י (in my crying out) אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ (to You).

23  אֶֽהֱב֥וּ (Love) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), כָּֽל־ (all) חֲסִ֫ידָ֥יו (you His holy ones);

אֱ֭מוּנִים (the faithful) נֹצֵ֣ר (is watching) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH)

וּמְשַׁלֵּ֥ם (and recompensing) עַל־ (in) יֶ֝֗תֶר (excess) עֹשֵׂ֥ה (the worker) גַאֲוָֽה׃ (of pride).

24  חִ֭זְקוּ (Hold firm), וְיַאֲמֵ֣ץ (and He shall strengthen) לְבַבְכֶ֑ם (your⁺ heart),

כָּל־ (all) הַ֝מְיַחֲלִ֗ים (those waiting) לַיהוָֽה׃ (for YHWH).
