NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.1Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him.1And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.1Jacob went on his way, and God's angels met him.
When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!" So he named that place Mahanaim.2And when Jacob saw them he said, “This is God’s camp!” So he called the name of that place Mahanaim.2Jacob said when he saw them, "This is God's camp." So he named that place Mahanaim.2And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.2When he saw them, Jacob said, "This is God's camp." So he called that place Mahanaim.
Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom,3Then Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.3Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
He instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: 'Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.4instructing them, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, ‘I have sojourned with Laban and stayed until now.4He also commanded them saying, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: 'Thus says your servant Jacob, "I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;4And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:4He commanded them, "You are to say to my lord Esau, 'This is what your servant Jacob says. I have been staying with Laban and have been delayed until now.

I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.'"5I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, in order that I may find favor in your sight.’”5I have oxen and donkeys and flocks and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight."'"5And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.5I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male and female slaves. I have sent this message to inform my lord, in order to seek your favor.'"
When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."6And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.”6The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."6And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.6When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau; he is coming to meet you--and he has 400 men with him."
In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps,7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies;7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;7Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; he divided the people with him into two camps, along with the flocks, cattle, and camels.
He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."8thinking, “If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape.”8for he said, "If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the company which is left will escape."8And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.8He thought, "If Esau comes to one camp and attacks it, the remaining one can escape."
Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, LORD, you who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'9And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’9Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,'9And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:9Then Jacob said, "God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said to me, 'Go back to your land and to your family, and I will cause you to prosper,'

I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.10I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.10I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.10I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.10I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two camps.
Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.11Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children.11"Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children.11Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.11Please rescue me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid of him; otherwise, he may come and attack me, the mothers, and their children.
But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"12But you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”12"For You said, 'I will surely prosper you and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.'"12And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.12You have said, 'I will cause you to prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"
He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:13So he stayed there that night, and from what he had with him he took a present for his brother Esau,13So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau:13And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;13He spent the night there and took part of what he had brought with him as a gift for his brother Esau:
two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,14Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,14 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,

thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.15thirty milking camels and their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.15thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.15Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.15 30 milk camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.
He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds."16These he handed over to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on ahead of me and put a space between drove and drove.”16He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between droves."16And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.16He entrusted them to his slaves as separate herds and said to them, "Go on ahead of me, and leave some distance between the herds."
He instructed the one in the lead: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks, 'Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?'17He instructed the first, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, ‘To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And whose are these ahead of you?’17He commanded the one in front, saying, "When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?'17And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?17And he told the first one: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks, 'Who do you belong to? Where are you going? And whose animals are these ahead of you?'
then you are to say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.'"18then you shall say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a present sent to my lord Esau. And moreover, he is behind us.’”18then you shall say, 'These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.'"18Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.18then tell him, 'They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And look, he is behind us.'"
He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: "You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.19He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves, “You shall say the same thing to Esau when you find him,19Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, "After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;19And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.19He also told the second one, the third, and everyone who was walking behind the animals, "Say the same thing to Esau when you find him.

And be sure to say, 'Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.'" For he thought, "I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me."20and you shall say, ‘Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.’” For he thought, “I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterward I shall see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”20and you shall say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.'" For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."20And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.20You are also to say, 'Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.'" For he thought, "I want to appease Esau with the gift that is going ahead of me. After that, I can face him, and perhaps he will forgive me."
So Jacob's gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.21So the present passed on ahead of him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.21So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.21So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.21So the gift was sent on ahead of him while he remained in the camp that night.

Jacob Wrestles with God

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.22The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.22Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.22During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his 11 sons, and crossed the ford of Jabbok.
After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.23He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had.23He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.23He took them and sent them across the stream, along with all his possessions.
So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.24And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.24Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.24Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.25When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.25When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob's thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.25When the man saw that He could not defeat him, He struck Jacob's hip socket as they wrestled and dislocated his hip.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."26Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”26Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.26Then He said to Jacob, "Let Me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me.""
The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered.27And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”27So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.27What is your name?" the man asked." Jacob," he replied."
Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome."28Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”28He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed."28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.28Your name will no longer be Jacob," He said. "It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed."
Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.29Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him.29Then Jacob asked him and said, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there.29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.29Then Jacob asked Him, "Please tell me Your name." But He answered, "Why do you ask My name?" And He blessed him there.
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."30So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.”30So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved."30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.30Jacob then named the place Peniel, "For I have seen God face to face," he said, "and I have been delivered."
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.31The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.31Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.31The sun shone on him as he passed by Penuel--limping because of his hip.
Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.32Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip on the sinew of the thigh.32Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.32That is why, to this day, the Israelites don't eat the thigh muscle that is at the hip socket: because He struck Jacob's hip socket at the thigh muscle.
