Haggai 2

The Coming Glory of God’s House

On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,

The twenty-first day of the seventh month marked the close of the Feast of Tabernacles, when Israel remembered God’s care in the wilderness and gave thanks for the harvest. For the returned exiles, whose crops had been disappointing, the festival highlighted both God’s past provision and their present need.

Num 29:32 On the seventh day you are to present seven bulls…
Lev 23:34 Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘On the fifteenth day…
Lev 23:39 On the fifteenth day of the seventh month,…

the word of the LORD came

God addressed His people directly, giving the message divine authority. Their circumstances were not beyond His notice, and He spoke to guide them in the work before them.

Hag 1:1 In the second year of the reign of Darius…
Hag 1:3 Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet…
Zec 1:1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,…

through Haggai the prophet,

Haggai served among the Jewish remnant that had returned from Babylon. God had appointed him to call the people and their leaders to rebuild the temple, which had remained unfinished for years.

Ezr 6:14 So the Jewish elders built and prospered.…
Ezr 5:1 Later, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo…
Hag 1:12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak…

saying:

What follows is God’s instruction and encouragement for the community as they faced the demands and discouragements of restoring His house.

Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…
Num 1:1 On the first day of the second month of the second year…
Exo 25:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,

“Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,

Zerubbabel led the returned exiles under Persian rule and oversaw the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. As a descendant of David, he stood in the royal line preserved by God after the exile. His position as governor placed him at the center of Judah’s civil administration during a difficult period of restoration.

Zec 4:6-10 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,…
Ezr 5:2 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak…

and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest,

Joshua led the restoration of priestly ministry and temple worship after the exile. Together with Zerubbabel, he represented the united civil and spiritual leadership needed to rebuild the community around the worship of God.

and also to the remnant of the people.

The remnant consisted of those who had returned from Babylon to Judah. Though small and facing poverty, opposition, and discouragement, they were the people through whom God was restoring Jerusalem, the temple, and covenant worship.

Ask them,

God called the leaders and people to examine their situation honestly. Haggai’s message confronted their discouragement and redirected their attention to God’s purpose for the temple and the restored community.

Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…
Job 8:8-10 Please inquire of past generations and consider…
Jer 6:16 Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths…

‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory?

Some of the older returnees had seen Solomon’s temple before the Babylonians destroyed it in 586 BC. Its grandeur stood in sharp contrast to the unfinished structure being raised by the small, impoverished community that had returned from exile.

Ezr 3:12-13 But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads…
2Ch 5:13-14 The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise…
1Ki 8:10-11 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place,…

How does it look to you now?

The rebuilt temple appeared weak and unimpressive beside the memory of the former sanctuary. Its condition reflected Judah’s reduced circumstances after exile, yet rebuilding it remained central to restoring Israel’s worship and covenant life in the land.

Hag 1:4 Is it a time for you yourselves to live…
Lam 2:7 The Lord has rejected His altar; He has abandoned…
2Ki 25:9-10 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…

Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’

God acknowledged their disappointment without dismissing their work. The value of the temple did not rest in its size or ornamentation but in God’s purpose to dwell among His people. The modest beginning would lead to a greater display of His glory.

2Co 3:10 Indeed, what was once glorious has no glory now…
Isa 40:17 All the nations are as nothing before Him…
Zec 4:10 For who has despised the day of small things?…

But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD.

Zerubbabel, governor of Judah and heir of David’s royal line, led the returned exiles in rebuilding the temple. Though the community was small and its resources limited, God called him to carry out the work entrusted to him.

Zec 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,…
Zec 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation…
Ezr 5:2 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak…

Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest.

Joshua bore responsibility for restoring the priesthood and the worship of the returned community. The rebuilding of the temple required both civil leadership and faithful priestly service before the Lord.

Ezr 3:2 Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests…
Zec 3:1 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
Hag 1:12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak…

And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD.

The task belonged to the whole covenant community. Families, laborers, leaders, priests, and officials all shared in restoring the place where God’s people would worship Him.

Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…
2Ch 32:7 Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid…
Hag 1:14 So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel…

Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of Hosts.

God commanded action while assuring them of His presence. The Lord of Hosts, ruler over all earthly and heavenly powers, would sustain the work despite opposition, poverty, and the temple’s humble appearance compared with Solomon’s temple.

1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…
Hag 1:13 Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message…
Exo 3:12 “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be…”…

This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt.

God’s covenant with Israel began with His deliverance from Egypt and His commitment to claim them as His people. That founding act established their identity as a nation belonging to Him. Though generations had passed and the returned exiles faced a diminished temple and difficult circumstances, God had not abandoned the covenant He made with their ancestors.

Lev 26:45 But for their sake I will remember the covenant…
Exo 29:45-46 Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God.…
Exo 19:5-6 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…

And My Spirit remains among you;

The Lord’s presence had not departed from His people. As He had guided Israel in the wilderness and equipped leaders and craftsmen for His work, He remained with the remnant rebuilding the temple. Their strength and security did not depend on their numbers, resources, or political standing, but on God’s continuing presence.

Isa 63:11 Then His people remembered the days of old,…
Isa 59:21 “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD…
Neh 9:20 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them.…

do not be afraid.”

Opposition, poverty, and the modest scale of the new temple gave the people reason for discouragement, yet God commanded them to continue without fear. The same God who delivered Israel from Egypt was still with them and would accomplish His purposes through their obedience.

Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…
Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…

For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

The Lord speaks with the full authority of the sovereign ruler over heaven and earth. His declaration assures the returned exiles that the future of the temple and Jerusalem rests in His power, not in their limited resources or the strength of surrounding nations.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Zec 8:7 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I will save My people…
Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…

“Once more, in a little while,

God points ahead to another decisive act in history. Though the people faced immediate discouragement over the temple’s modest appearance, His purposes would unfold according to His appointed time.

Heb 10:37 “In just a little while, He who is coming will come…”…
Isa 26:20 Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors…
Isa 10:25 For in just a little while My fury against you…

I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.

God will act on a universal scale, overturning earthly powers and establishing His rule. The shaking anticipates the coming kingdom of Christ, when all that is temporary will give way to what God has established permanently.

Heb 12:26-27 At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has promised,…
Psa 95:4-5 In His hand are the depths of the earth,…
Jon 1:9 “I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD”……

I will shake all the nations,

God would overturn the political order of the world, demonstrating that earthly powers remain under His rule. The upheavals of the Persian period would affect Judah’s future and open the way for the temple’s rebuilding. The promise also looks beyond immediate events to God’s final establishment of His unshakable kingdom.

Heb 12:26-27 At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has promised,…
Jer 10:10 But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God…
Jol 3:16 The LORD will roar from Zion and raise His voice…

and they will come with all their treasures,

The wealth of the nations would be directed toward the Lord’s house. Persian rulers supplied resources for the rebuilding effort, and the wider promise anticipates the nations bringing their riches and honor under God’s reign.

Isa 60:5 Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will…
Isa 60:11 Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut…
Psa 68:29 Because of Your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring…

and I will fill this house with glory,

Though the rebuilt temple appeared modest beside Solomon’s temple, God promised that its true glory would come from His presence and purpose. The Second Temple would stand in Jerusalem until the coming of Christ, who revealed God’s glory among His people.

2Ch 5:13-14 The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise…
1Ki 8:10-11 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place,…
Ezk 43:4-5 and the glory of the LORD entered the temple…

says the LORD of Hosts.

The Lord commands the armies of heaven and possesses authority over every nation and ruler. His promise did not depend on Judah’s strength or resources, but on His power to accomplish what He had declared.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Jer 48:1 Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Isa 6:3 “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts;…”…

The silver is Mine,

God reminded the returned exiles that the resources needed to rebuild His house were already under His authority. Though the people faced poverty and limited means after Babylonian captivity, the wealth of every nation belonged to Him.

Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Psa 24:1 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s…
Deu 10:14 Behold, to the LORD your God belong the heavens,…

and the gold is Mine,

The former temple had displayed great splendor through its gold-covered furnishings and structure. The new temple appeared modest by comparison, but God was not limited by what the people possessed. Its future glory would rest on His purpose and provision, not on human wealth.

1Ch 29:16 O LORD our God, from Your hand comes all this abundance…
1Ch 29:12 Both riches and honor come from You, and You…
Deu 8:18 But remember that it is the LORD your God…

declares the LORD of Hosts.

The God who commands the armies of heaven had the power to fulfill His promises and establish His presence among His people. His authority assured Judah that the rebuilding of the temple would succeed according to His will.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Mal 1:14 But cursed is the deceiver who has an acceptable male…
Jer 51:19 The Portion of Jacob is not like these…

The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,

The house is the temple in Jerusalem. Solomon’s temple had displayed extraordinary wealth and grandeur, while the Second Temple began humbly after the exile. Yet its greater glory came through the presence and ministry of Jesus Christ, who taught there and revealed God’s salvation. The promise also anticipates the final dwelling of God with His people, when no temple will be needed because the Lord Himself will be its light and glory.

Ezk 43:4-5 and the glory of the LORD entered the temple…
Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…
Isa 60:7 All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered to you;…

says the LORD of Hosts.

The God who rules over all heavenly forces guaranteed the fulfillment of this promise. Judah’s limited resources, opposition, and discouragement could not prevent His purpose.

Mal 1:14 But cursed is the deceiver who has an acceptable male…
Mal 2:2 If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

And in this place I will provide peace,

God promised more than the completion of a building. He would bring peace, wholeness, and reconciliation through the Messiah, whose work would establish lasting peace between God and His people. The promise looks forward ultimately to God’s future kingdom, where peace will be complete.

Psa 122:6-9 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you…
Ezk 37:26 And I will make a covenant of peace with them;…
Psa 85:8-10 I will listen to what God the LORD will say;…

declares the LORD of Hosts.”

The repeated declaration confirms that the promise rests on God’s authority rather than on the strength of the returned exiles.

1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…
Hag 1:13 Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message…
Exo 3:12 “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be…”…

Blessings for a Defiled People

On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,

The date falls in Kislev, corresponding to November–December, in 520 BC. It came about three months after the people resumed work on the temple and marked a further word from God concerning their worship and obedience.

Hag 1:15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month…
Zec 7:1 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD…
Ezr 10:9 So within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin…

in the second year of Darius,

Darius I ruled Persia from 522 to 486 BC. Judah was then a small Persian province, inhabited by returned exiles who were rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple destroyed by Babylon.

Zec 1:1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,…
Zec 1:7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month,…
Ezr 4:24 Thus the construction of the house of God in Jerusalem…

the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying,

God again spoke through Haggai, whose name means “festive” or “my feast,” whose ministry called the returned community to complete the temple and to recognize that outward religious activity could not overcome the effects of disobedience.

Hag 1:3 Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet…
Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
2Sa 7:4 But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,

“This is what the LORD of Hosts says:

The God who commands the armies of heaven speaks with full authority to address Judah’s worship and conduct.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Mal 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse…
Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…

‘Ask the priests for a ruling.

The priests were charged with teaching God’s Law and deciding questions of ceremonial purity. The inquiry would expose whether the people understood that holiness could not be transferred casually, while uncleanness spread readily.

Lev 10:10-11 You must distinguish between the holy and the common…
Deu 17:8-11 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…
Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…

If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment,

Consecrated meat came from sacrifices offered to the LORD and belonged to the realm of what was set apart for Him. Carrying it in a garment reflected the careful treatment required for holy things under the law.

Lev 6:27-28 Anything that touches its flesh will become holy,…
Lev 7:19-21 Meat that touches anything unclean must not be eaten…
Lev 22:2-3 Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect…

and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food,

Haggai names ordinary foods used in daily life to distinguish them from what had been consecrated. Contact with the garment carrying sacrificial meat did not transfer holiness to these items.

Lev 11:33-35 If any of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it…
Num 19:22 Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean…
Lev 22:4-7 If a descendant of Aaron has a skin disease or a discharge,…

does that item become holy?’”

The question exposed the limits of ceremonial holiness. What God had set apart remained holy, but its holiness was not passed along indirectly through common objects.

Exo 29:37 For seven days you shall make atonement for the altar…
Num 4:15 When Aaron and his sons have finished covering…
Exo 30:29 You are to consecrate them so that they will be most holy.…

“No,” replied the priests.

The priests answered according to the law. Their response prepared Haggai’s point that Israel’s uncleanness had affected its work and offerings, while outward association with sacred things could not make the people acceptable before God.

Ezk 44:23 They are to teach My people the difference…
Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…
Deu 17:8-11 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…

So Haggai asked,

Haggai addressed the priests as representatives of the people after the return from Babylonian exile, using the Law to expose Judah’s spiritual condition.

Deu 17:8-9 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…
Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…
Ezk 44:23 They are to teach My people the difference…

“If one who is defiled by contact with a corpse

A person made unclean by death carried ritual impurity until properly purified. Death testified to the ruin brought by sin and rendered the person unfit for sacred service.

Num 19:11 Whoever touches any dead body will be unclean…
Lev 21:1-4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron’s sons…
Num 19:13 Anyone who touches a human corpse and fails…

touches any of these,

The foods and offerings previously mentioned could be made unclean through contact with one who was defiled. Holiness was not passed on indirectly, but impurity spread through contact.

Lev 7:19-21 Meat that touches anything unclean must not be eaten…
Lev 5:3 Or if he touches human uncleanness—even if he is unaware…
Num 19:22 Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean…

does it become defiled?”

The question showed that outward religious activity could not cleanse hearts or works already stained by sin.

Lev 11:24-28 These creatures will make you unclean. Whoever touches…
Lev 11:31-32 These animals are unclean for you among all the crawling creatures…
Num 19:14 This is the law when a person dies in a tent:…

“Yes, it becomes defiled,” the priests answered.

The priests correctly applied the Law, confirming that Judah’s uncleanness had affected its worship and work.

Lev 22:3-6 Tell them that for the generations to come…
Num 5:2-3 Command the Israelites to send away from the camp…
Lev 15:7 Whoever touches the body of the man with a discharge…

Then Haggai replied,

Haggai addressed the returned exiles in Judah after questioning the priests about ceremonial purity and defilement. The people had begun rebuilding the temple but had long neglected God’s house while concentrating on their own homes and livelihoods.

1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…
Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

“So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD,

Judah’s return from Babylon had not removed the spiritual condition that marked the nation. Their neglect of God’s command concerning the temple exposed a disordered relationship with Him. The Lord Himself pronounced this assessment.

Isa 1:4 Alas, O sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity…
Jer 7:28 Therefore you must say to them, ‘This is the nation…
Deu 32:5 His people have acted corruptly toward Him;…

and so it is with every work of their hands;

Their labor, crops, and religious activity were affected by their disobedience. Outward work could not be acceptable while the people remained unclean before God.

Jer 25:14 For many nations and great kings will enslave them…
Psa 28:4 Repay them for what their hands have done;…
Isa 59:6 Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing,…

whatever they offer there is defiled.

Their sacrifices at the altar were not accepted as pure worship because the worshipers had not dealt with their sin. God required obedience and a restored devotion to Him, not religious acts separated from faithful hearts.

Mal 1:7-8 By presenting defiled food on My altar. But you ask,…
Lev 22:3 Tell them that for the generations to come…
Tit 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to the defiled…

Now consider carefully from this day forward:

Haggai calls the returned exiles to review the hardships they experienced while the temple lay unfinished. Their poor harvests and economic loss exposed the consequences of neglecting the house of God.

Hag 1:5 Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…
Hag 1:7 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…”…
Lam 3:40 Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.

Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,

The temple had remained incomplete for years after the first exiles returned from Babylon. When rebuilding resumed under Zerubbabel and Joshua the high priest, the people were to recognize the change from former scarcity to God’s blessing upon their renewed obedience.

Ezr 3:10 When the builders had laid the foundation of the temple…
Zec 4:9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation…
Ezr 5:16 So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation…

from that time,

Israel’s returned exiles had neglected the rebuilding of the temple while concentrating on their own homes and livelihoods. Their reduced harvests exposed the consequences of placing God’s house and worship behind personal concerns.

Hag 1:9-11 You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little.…
Deu 28:15-20 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Lev 26:19-20 I will break down your stubborn pride and make your sky…

when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain,

Farmers anticipated sufficient grain from their labor, yet the harvest repeatedly fell short.

Hag 1:6 You have planted much but harvested little…
Deu 28:38 You will sow much seed in the field, but harvest little…
Lev 26:26 When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women…

there were but ten.

The diminished yield showed that their efforts lacked God’s blessing and called them to recognize their disobedience.

Isa 17:10-11 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation…
Hos 4:10 They will eat but not be satisfied; they will be promiscuous…
Amo 4:6-9 I afflicted all your cities with cleanness of teeth…

When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths,

Vineyards likewise failed to produce the expected abundance, affecting both daily provision and the nation’s economy.

Deu 28:39-40 You will plant and cultivate vineyards,…
Mic 6:15 You will sow but not reap; you will press olives…
Amo 5:11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor…

there were but twenty.

The severe shortage confirmed that God had withheld prosperity while the temple remained unfinished.

Jer 48:33 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard…
Hos 2:9 Therefore I will take back My grain in its time…
Isa 24:7-9 The new wine dries up, the vine withers.…

I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail,

God had withheld agricultural prosperity from the returned exiles, damaging their crops and labor through conditions they could not control. Their hardship exposed the futility of rebuilding personal security while neglecting the Lord’s house and His commands. The judgment was comprehensive, reaching the produce on which their homes and economy depended.

Amo 4:9 I struck you with blight and mildew in your growing gardens…
Deu 28:22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease…
Exo 9:23-25 So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven,…

but you did not turn to Me,

The suffering had not produced the repentance God intended. Rather than recognizing His hand in their losses and returning to covenant obedience, the people continued in spiritual indifference. Haggai’s message confronts them with the need to acknowledge their sin and reorder their priorities around worship and obedience.

Amo 4:6 I afflicted all your cities with cleanness of teeth…
Amo 4:8 People staggered from city to city for water to drink,…
Amo 4:10 I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt;…

declares the LORD.

The warning carries the authority of the covenant God Himself. Haggai speaks not from personal opinion but as the Lord’s messenger, calling the people to respond seriously to God’s discipline.

Hag 1:13 Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message…
Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…
Jer 1:8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you…

Consider carefully from this day forward—

God calls the returned exiles to reflect on the hardships that followed their neglect of His house and to recognize the significance of their renewed obedience.

Hag 1:7 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…”…

Zec 1:7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month,…

The foundation marked the restoration of worship in Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile and renewed the visible center of Israel’s covenant life with God.

Ezr 3:10-11 When the builders had laid the foundation of the temple…

consider carefully:

The repeated command directs the people to remember the past and to watch for God’s promised blessing as they continue the work He had given them.

Deu 32:46-47 “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared…
Psa 119:59 I considered my ways and turned my steps…
Pro 4:26 Make a level path for your feet, and all your ways…

Is there still seed in the barn?

The harvest had not yet arrived, and the stored seed was limited, leaving the people with uncertainty about the coming season. Their earlier neglect of the temple had been accompanied by poor crops and economic hardship.

Jol 1:17 The seeds lie shriveled beneath the clods;…
Deu 28:38-39 You will sow much seed in the field, but harvest little…
Lev 26:20 For your land will not yield its produce…

The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit.

These crops represented the land’s ordinary provision and prosperity. Their barrenness showed that the people had not yet experienced the full change promised by God, even after they resumed building the temple.

Deu 8:8 a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates;…
Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;…
Num 13:23 When they came to the Valley of Eshcol, they cut down…

But from this day on, I will bless you.”

God marked their renewed obedience as the beginning of restoration. Though the fields had not yet produced fruit, He promised that His favor would bring the provision they lacked.

Psa 67:6-7 The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.…
Deu 7:13 He will love you and bless you and multiply you.…
Lev 26:4 I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit…

Zerubbabel the LORD’s Signet Ring

For the second time that day,

God gave Haggai another message on the same date, stressing the importance of what followed. The earlier oracle addressed the priests and the people; this one would speak directly to Zerubbabel.

The date was the twenty-fourth day of Kislev in the second year of Darius, late in 520 BC. The returned exiles had resumed work on the Temple, and God’s promises of future blessing and victory were given in the midst of that rebuilding effort.

Zec 1:7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month,…

Zerubbabel led the returned exiles as Judah’s Persian-appointed governor and as a descendant of David’s royal line. He oversaw the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem, restoring worship after the Babylonian exile. God’s direct message to him confirms his central role in the restoration of Judah and anticipates God’s continuing purposes for David’s house.

that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth:

God announces a coming display of sovereign power over creation and the nations.
