Isaiah 34

Judgment on the Nations

Come near, O nations, to listen;

God summons every nation to hear His judgment. Though Isaiah often addresses Judah and Jerusalem, the Lord’s authority extends over all kingdoms and peoples.

Psa 49:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.…
Isa 41:1 Be silent before Me, O islands, and let the peoples renew…

pay attention, O peoples.

The repeated command stresses that the nations are accountable to God and must heed what He declares. No people or ruler stands outside His rule.

Isa 49:1 Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples:…
Mic 1:2 Hear, O peoples, all of you; listen, O earth!…

Let the earth hear, and all that fills it,

The summons reaches beyond human governments to the whole inhabited earth. God’s judgment concerns the world He created and governs.

Jer 22:29 O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD!
Psa 50:12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is Mine,…

the world and all that springs from it.

Every nation, person, and living thing belongs to the Lord. The coming judgment described in this chapter is universal in scope, beginning with the nations and demonstrating God’s righteous rule over all creation.

Psa 24:1 A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s…
Gen 1:11-12 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation:…

The LORD is angry with all the nations

God’s judgment reaches beyond Judah to every people that has resisted His rule. As Judge of all the earth, He holds nations accountable for idolatry, violence, pride, and injustice.

Zec 1:15 but I am fiercely angry with the nations that are at ease.…
Jer 25:31-33 The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth…

and furious with all their armies.

Armies represent the power nations trust for security and conquest, yet no military strength can withstand God’s purpose. The great empires of the ancient world, including Assyria and Babylon, were subject to His judgment despite their power.

Isa 66:15-16 For behold, the LORD will come with fire—…
Rev 19:19-21 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth…

He will devote them to destruction;

The nations are set apart as herem, devoted to destruction for God’s purposes, under God’s righteous sentence. Their destruction reflects the seriousness of rebellion against Him and anticipates His final judgment of the wicked.

Deu 20:17 For you must devote them to complete destruction…
Deu 7:2 and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you…

He will give them over to slaughter.

The picture is one of decisive defeat, like the judgments announced against Babylon and Edom. God will bring down hostile powers, ultimately pointing to Christ’s final victory over all rebellion.

Ezk 39:17-20 And as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 46:10 For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of Hosts,…

Their slain will be left unburied,

The judgment on the nations will be so complete that no one remains to bury the dead. In the ancient world, denial of burial was a public disgrace, marking the fallen as defeated and abandoned under God’s judgment.

Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread…
Jer 14:16 And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown…
Jer 8:1-2 “At that time,” declares the LORD, “the bones of the kings…

and the stench of their corpses will rise;

The bodies left exposed will testify to the scale of the devastation. Decay and defilement fill the land because rebellion against the Lord has brought ruin upon those who opposed Him.

Jhn 11:39 “Take away the stone,” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks,”…
Jol 2:20 The northern army I will drive away from you,…
Amo 4:10 I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt;…

the mountains will flow with their blood.

The imagery portrays slaughter on a vast scale. Even the mountains, symbols of permanence and strength, are overwhelmed, showing that no nation or natural stronghold can resist God’s righteous judgment.

Ezk 32:5-6 I will put your flesh on the mountains and fill the valleys…
Ezk 39:17-20 And as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Rev 14:20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city…

All the stars of heaven will be dissolved.

God’s judgment reaches beyond the nations named in this oracle and shakes the whole created order. The language presents an actual cosmic upheaval accompanying the Day of the Lord.

Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations…
Jol 2:10 Before them the earth quakes; the heavens tremble.…
2Pe 3:10-12 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief.…

The skies will be rolled up like a scroll,

The present order of the heavens will be brought to its appointed end under God’s authority, as a completed scroll is closed.

Rev 6:14 The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up,…
Heb 1:10-12 “In the beginning, O Lord, You laid the foundations…
Psa 102:25-26 In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth…

and all their stars will fall

Nothing in heaven or on earth stands beyond the reach of the Creator’s judgment. The collapse of the heavens corresponds to the downfall of the rebellious nations gathered against Him.

Rev 6:13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth…
Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days:…
Mrk 13:25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers…

like withered leaves from the vine,

Their fall will be certain and swift, like leaves that have lost their life and strength.

Jer 8:13 I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD.…
Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;…
Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch…

like foliage from the fig tree.

The image emphasizes the final removal of what has become barren and subject to judgment.

Mat 21:19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, He went up to it…
Mrk 11:20-21 As they were walking back in the morning, they saw…
Jol 1:7 It has laid waste My grapevine and splintered My fig tree.…

Judgment on Edom

When My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,

God’s judgment is pictured as already prepared and fully satisfied in heaven before it falls upon the earth. The sword conveys the certainty, completeness, and righteousness of His judicial action.

Jer 46:10 For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of Hosts,…
Deu 32:40-43 For I lift up My hand to heaven and declare:…
Ezk 21:3-5 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you,…

then it will come down upon Edom,

Edom, the nation descended from Esau and long hostile toward Israel, becomes the immediate object of judgment. Its downfall also illustrates God’s judgment against nations that set themselves against His purposes and His people.

Isa 63:1-6 Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah…
Oba 1:1-4 This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom…
Jer 49:7-10 Concerning Edom, this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

upon the people I have devoted to destruction.

Edom had been marked for total judgment under God’s decree, devoted to destruction (herem), meaning set apart for destruction. Their destruction was not accidental or merely political; it was the execution of divine justice against persistent rebellion and hostility.

Deu 20:16-18 However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God…
1Sa 15:2-3 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed…
Jos 6:17-21 Now the city and everything in it must be devoted…

The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood.

God’s judgment is pictured as a sword fully employed against those under His condemnation. The image conveys the certainty and severity of His righteous wrath against rebellion.

Deu 32:41-42 When I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand grasps it…
Ezk 21:9-10 Son of man, prophesy and tell them that this is…
Rev 19:13-15 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,…

It drips with fat—with the blood of lambs and goats,

The slaughter is described in sacrificial terms, portraying the judgment as an appointed act of God. Lambs and goats, familiar sacrificial animals, emphasize the abundance and completeness of the bloodshed.

Ezk 39:17-20 And as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Lev 4:27-31 And if one of the common people sins unintentionally…
Lev 1:10-13 If, however, one’s offering is a burnt offering…

with the fat of the kidneys of rams.

The choicest portions of sacrificial animals belonged to the LORD. The imagery presents the coming destruction as wholly set apart to Him and carried out according to His judgment.

Exo 29:20-22 Slaughter the ram, take some of its blood,…
Lev 8:25-27 And Moses took the fat—the fat tail, all the fat…

For the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah,

Bozrah, a leading city of Edom, stands as the focal point of God’s judgment on that nation. Edom’s long hostility toward Israel had brought divine retribution.

Isa 63:1-4 Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah…
Jer 49:22 Look! An eagle will soar and swoop down…

a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

The judgment would extend beyond one city to the whole land. Edom’s downfall demonstrates that nations who exalt themselves against the LORD and oppose His purposes will not escape His justice.

Ezk 35:3-9 This is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you,…
Oba 1:8-10 In that day, declares the LORD, will I not destroy…
Mal 1:3-4 but Esau I have hated, and I have made his…

And the wild oxen will fall with them,

God’s judgment will bring down the proud and powerful along with the nations under condemnation. Wild oxen portray strength that cannot resist the Lord’s appointed destruction.

Job 39:9-12 Will the wild ox consent to serve you?…
Num 23:22 God brought them out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox.
Deu 33:17 His majesty is like a firstborn bull, and his horns…

the young bulls with the strong ones.

Neither rising power nor established might will escape. The picture includes all ranks of those gathered against God, from vigorous younger forces to seasoned leaders and warriors.

Psa 22:12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
Psa 68:30 Rebuke the beast in the reeds, the herd of bulls…
Jer 50:27 Kill all her young bulls; let them go down…

Their land will be drenched with blood,

The slaughter will be extensive, leaving the land marked by the violence of judgment. Edom’s opposition to God and hostility toward His people will bring real consequences.

Ezk 32:6-7 I will drench the land with the flow of your blood,…
Isa 63:1-6 Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah…
Rev 14:20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city…

and their soil will be soaked with fat.

The battlefield is pictured as a sacrifice offered in judgment, with the richness of the slain covering the ground. The imagery emphasizes the completeness of God’s sentence against a rebellious nation.

Ezk 39:17-20 And as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Exo 29:13 Take all the fat that covers the entrails and the lobe…
Lev 3:16-17 Then the priest is to burn the food on the altar…

For the LORD has a day of vengeance,

God has appointed a definite time to judge those who oppose Him and afflict His people. His vengeance is holy justice, carried out according to His righteous purposes.

Isa 61:2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor…
Luk 21:22 For these are the days of vengeance, to fulfill all…
Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…

a year of recompense

The judgment will be full and measured, repaying Edom and the nations for their deeds. God’s delay does not lessen the certainty of His judgment.

Isa 63:4 For the day of vengeance was in My heart,…
Isa 35:4 Say to those with anxious hearts: “Be strong, do not fear!…
Jer 51:56 For a destroyer is coming against her—against Babylon.…

for the cause of Zion.

The judgment concerns God’s covenant commitment to Zion, the place associated with His dwelling and His people. Those who have sought Zion’s ruin will answer to the LORD, who will vindicate His people and fulfill His purposes for Jerusalem.

Isa 62:1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent…
Psa 102:13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,…
Zec 1:14 Then the angel who was speaking with me said,…

Edom’s streams will be turned to tar,

Edom, Israel’s long-standing neighbor and rival to the south and east, would face judgment reaching even its sources of life.

Gen 14:10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits,…
Oba 1:18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire…
Jer 49:17 Edom will become an object of horror. All who pass by…

and her soil to sulfur;

The devastation would extend through the land itself, leaving it barren and unfit for habitation.

Deu 29:23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt,…
Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire…
Ezk 38:22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed.…

her land will become a blazing pitch.

Isaiah portrays Edom’s overthrow as a complete and enduring ruin, demonstrating God’s judgment against persistent hostility toward His people and rebellion against His rule.

Gen 19:28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah…
Jer 49:18 As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown…
Psa 11:6 On the wicked He will rain down fiery coals and sulfur;…

It will not be quenched—day or night.

God’s judgment on Edom is pictured as an unending fire, beyond human power to stop or reverse.

Isa 66:24 As they go forth, they will see the corpses of the men…
Mat 3:12 His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing…
Mrk 9:43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.…

Its smoke will ascend forever.

The rising smoke marks the lasting result of its overthrow, as a public witness that the nation has fallen under God’s wrath.

Rev 19:3 And a second time they called out: “Hallelujah!”…
Rev 14:11 And the smoke of their torment rises forever…
Gen 19:28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah…

From generation to generation it will lie desolate;

Edom’s land would remain ruined through succeeding generations, its devastation standing in contrast to its former strength and security.

Isa 13:20 She will never be inhabited or settled…
Ezk 35:9 I will make you a perpetual desolation.…
Jer 25:12 But when seventy years are complete, I will punish…

no one will ever again pass through it.

The land would become abandoned and unfit for ordinary life, travel, and trade, showing the completeness of God’s judgment against those who persist in hostility toward Him and His people.

Jer 51:43 Her cities have become a desolation, a dry and arid land…
Jer 50:13 Because of the wrath of the LORD, she will not be inhabited;…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…

The desert owl and screech owl will possess it,

Edom’s cities and fields will be emptied of human inhabitants and given over to creatures of deserted places. The land once marked by strength and settlement will become a ruin.

Isa 13:21 But desert creatures will lie down there,…
Zep 2:14 Herds will lie down in her midst, creatures of every kind.…
Jer 50:39 So the desert creatures and hyenas will live there…

and the great owl and raven will dwell in it.

Birds associated with wastelands and death will occupy what people have abandoned. Their presence portrays the thoroughness of God’s judgment upon Edom and the end of its former prosperity.

Psa 102:6 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.
Lev 11:15-17 any kind of raven,…
Job 38:41 Who provides food for the raven when its young…

The LORD will stretch out over Edom a measuring line of chaos

God’s judgment is deliberate, not uncontrolled. The measuring line pictures Him marking out the land for devastation, reversing its order and security.

2Ki 21:13 I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line…
Zec 1:16 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will return……
Lam 2:8 The LORD determined to destroy the wall of the Daughter…

and a plumb line of destruction.

The destruction will be exact and complete. As builders use a plumb line to establish a structure, the LORD will carry out His sentence against Edom with certainty, leaving its land desolate.

Amo 7:7-8 This is what He showed me: Behold, the Lord was standing…
Isa 28:17 I will make justice the measuring line,…
2Sa 8:2 David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down…

No nobles will be left to proclaim a king,

Edom’s judgment will be so complete that no ruling house or recognized leader will remain to restore the nation. Its political order, centered in the mountainous territory south and southeast of the Dead Sea, will collapse under God’s sentence.

Hos 3:4 For the Israelites must live many days without king…
Hos 10:3 Surely now they will say, “We have no king,…

and all her princes will come to nothing.

Those who once held authority and represented Edom’s strength will be stripped of power and influence. No human leadership will preserve a nation appointed for desolation.

Isa 40:23 He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers…
Psa 146:3-4 Put not your trust in princes, in mortal man…

Her towers will be overgrown with thorns,

The towers that once marked security and human strength will stand unused and ruined. Thorny growth portrays a city emptied by God’s judgment, with its defenses and order reduced to neglect.

Isa 32:13-14 and for the land of my people…
Isa 7:23-25 And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines…
Hos 9:6 For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them…

her fortresses with thistles and briers.

Places built for protection will no longer shelter soldiers or citizens. Their overgrowth shows that no recovery or resistance remains; the land has been surrendered to desolation.

Isa 5:6 I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated…
Hos 10:8 The high places of Aven will be destroyed—…
Gen 3:17-18 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened…

She will become a haunt for jackals,

Human habitation will give way to wild scavengers. The presence of jackals indicates ruins so complete that only animals of abandoned places remain.

Jer 10:22 Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…
Isa 13:22 Hyenas will howl in her fortresses and jackals…

an abode for ostriches.

The city’s former activity and prosperity will be replaced by wilderness. Unclean animals dwelling there underscore the devastation and uncleanness brought by divine judgment.

Isa 13:21 But desert creatures will lie down there,…
Jer 50:39 So the desert creatures and hyenas will live there…

The desert creatures will meet with hyenas,

Edom’s ruined cities and fields will become wilderness, inhabited by scavengers and wild animals rather than people. The scene portrays the lasting devastation brought by God’s judgment.

Jer 50:39 So the desert creatures and hyenas will live there…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

and one wild goat will call to another.

Animals that avoid settled land will move freely through the abandoned territory. Their calls mark a land emptied of its former inhabitants and human activity.

Isa 13:21-22 But desert creatures will lie down there,…
2Ch 11:15 And Jeroboam appointed his own priests…
Lev 17:7 They must no longer offer sacrifices to the goat demons…

There the night creature will settle

Creatures of darkness will inhabit the ruins without disturbance. What had been a nation with defenses, rulers, and commerce will be reduced to a desolate dwelling place.

Zep 2:14-15 Herds will lie down in her midst, creatures of every kind.…
Psa 102:6-7 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.…
Job 30:29 I have become a brother of jackals, a companion…

and find her place of repose.

The judgment is not temporary. Edom’s destruction will be complete enough for wilderness creatures to make their permanent home there.

Isa 17:2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be left…
Psa 84:3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest…
Jer 10:22 Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion…

There the owl will make her nest;

Edom’s downfall will be so complete that its ruined land will become a settled home for wilderness creatures. Once inhabited and defended by people, it will lie abandoned under God’s judgment.

Isa 13:21 But desert creatures will lie down there,…
Psa 102:6 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.
Zep 2:14 Herds will lie down in her midst, creatures of every kind.…

she will lay and hatch her eggs and gather her brood under her shadow.

The nesting and raising of young portray desolation that is lasting rather than temporary. No human restoration interrupts the creatures that occupy the land.

Deu 32:11 As an eagle stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,…
Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets…
Luk 13:34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets…

Even there the birds of prey will gather,

Predatory birds further mark the region as a place of death, ruin, and abandonment. The land once associated with Edom’s strength will belong to creatures drawn to devastation.

Ezk 39:17-20 And as for you, son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Mat 24:28 Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
Luk 17:37 “Where, Lord?” they asked. Jesus answered, …

each with its mate.

Life among the wild animals will continue in the ordered pattern established by God, while Edom’s human society has been removed. The judgment is comprehensive, leaving the nation’s territory permanently changed.

Gen 7:2-3 You are to take with you seven pairs of every kind…
Gen 6:19-20 And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark…
Gen 7:15-16 They came to Noah to enter the ark, two by two…

Search and read the scroll of the LORD:

Isaiah directs his hearers to God’s written record, where the announced judgment of Edom and the nations stands as a settled decree. Careful reading would show that the coming desolation was neither rumor nor accident, but the outworking of God’s declared purpose.

Jhn 5:39 You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that…
Jer 36:2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken…
Isa 8:1 Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll…

Not one of these will go missing,

Every creature named in the description of Edom’s ruin would occupy the abandoned land exactly as God decreed. The judgment would be complete, leaving the former centers of human life as a wilderness.

Jhn 18:9 This was to fulfill the word He had spoken…
Jhn 6:39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me,…
Jhn 17:12 While I was with them, I protected and preserved them…

not one will lack her mate,

The animals would be present in their proper pairs, multiplying and inhabiting the ruined territory. Their ordered presence emphasizes that even the details of desolation remain under God’s control.

Gen 7:2-3 You are to take with you seven pairs of every kind…
Gen 7:15-16 They came to Noah to enter the ark, two by two…
Gen 6:19-20 And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark…

because He has ordered it by His mouth,

The destruction of Edom and the gathering of wilderness creatures rest on God’s command. What He has spoken will occur without failure or alteration.

Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made…
Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

and He will gather them by His Spirit.

God Himself will bring about all that He has appointed. His Spirit directs the events of judgment and gathers the creatures into the land left empty by human rebellion.

Ezk 36:24-27 For I will take you from among the nations…
Ezk 37:9-10 Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath;…
Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather…

He has allotted their portion;

God assigns Edom’s ruined land to the creatures that will inhabit its desolation. As He once apportioned Canaan to Israel, He retains absolute authority over every land and nation.

Deu 32:8 When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,…
Psa 47:4 He chooses our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob…
Psa 78:55 He drove out nations before them and apportioned……

His hand has distributed it by measure.

The judgment is deliberate and exact. Edom’s devastation is neither accidental nor excessive, but the measured outcome of its opposition to the Lord.

Num 26:55-56 Indeed, the land must be divided by lot;…
Ezk 45:1 When you divide the land by lot as an inheritance…
Zec 2:1-2 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line…

They will possess it forever;

The animals and birds of the wilderness will remain where Edom’s cities and fields once stood. Its overthrow will be permanent, reversing its former security and prosperity.

Gen 17:8 And to you and your descendants I will give the land…
Isa 60:21 Then all your people will be righteous;…
Ezk 37:25 They will live in the land that I gave to My servant Jacob,…

they will dwell in it from generation to generation.

The land’s continuing desolation will testify through succeeding ages that God’s judgment upon Edom is settled and irreversible.

Jol 3:20 But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem…
Psa 102:28 The children of Your servants will dwell securely,…
