A Greeting from Jude

Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ

Jude, one of the half-brothers of Jesus, writes not by appealing to family connection but by confessing himself as Christ’s servant. Like Paul and James, he places himself under the authority of the risen Lord and devotes himself to Christ’s gospel and people. Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah and the sovereign Lord whom Jude obeys.

and a brother of James,

James was the respected leader of the Jerusalem church and was also a brother of Jesus (Matthew 13:55; Acts 15:13). Jude’s identification with James would have been well known to the first readers and confirmed his connection to the earliest Christian community. Neither Jude nor James grounded his authority in physical kinship with Jesus; both recognized Him as Lord.

To those who are called,

God’s people belong to Him because He has graciously summoned them through the gospel. The calling of believers fulfills God’s purpose in salvation and brings them out of spiritual darkness into fellowship with Christ (Romans 8:28–30; 2 Thessalonians 2:14).

loved by God the Father,

The Father’s love rests upon His children with the same covenant faithfulness displayed throughout Scripture. Believers are not sustained by their own merit but by the Father’s redeeming love, revealed supremely in the giving of His Son (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9–10).

and kept in Jesus Christ:

Jesus preserves those who belong to Him amid temptation, persecution, and the danger of false teaching. His saving work is not temporary; He intercedes for His people and will present them blameless before God (John 10:28–29; 1 Peter 1:5; Jude 24).

Mercy,

God’s compassion toward sinners is the foundation of salvation and the pattern for Christian conduct. Jude writes to believers facing false teachers and spiritual danger, reminding them that they remain dependent on God’s forgiving kindness. Those who have received mercy are called to show patient, truthful compassion to others, including those wavering under deception.

peace,

Christ gives His people peace with God through His atoning death and reconciles them into one body. Such peace strengthens the church against division, fear, and confusion when error threatens its fellowship. It rests on God’s sovereign care rather than favorable circumstances.

and love

God’s love was displayed supremely in the giving of His Son for the salvation of the world. Believers are to reflect that sacrificial love by pursuing one another’s good, guarding one another from sin, and remaining faithful to the truth. Love does not ignore falsehood but seeks the restoration and protection of those endangered by it.

Jude prays for an increasing supply of God’s mercy, peace, and love as his readers contend for the faith. Spiritual endurance does not arise from human resolve alone; God continually provides what His people need to stand firm until Christ returns.

God’s Judgment on the Ungodly

Beloved,

Jude addresses fellow Christians as members of God’s redeemed family. The affectionate greeting reveals pastoral concern and reminds the church that truth must be defended in love. Believers share a bond created by the mercy of God and faith in Jesus Christ.

2Pe 3:1 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.…
3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper…
1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…

although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share,

Jude had planned to rejoice with his readers in the salvation held in common by all who trust in Christ. That salvation includes forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, and the promised inheritance of eternal life. The gospel unites believers across every background because all are saved by the same Lord and through the same grace.

Act 15:11 On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace…
Tit 1:4 To Titus, my true child in our common faith: …
Heb 2:3 How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?…

I felt it necessary to write and urge you

Conditions in the churches required immediate warning rather than a general encouragement. Ungodly teachers had entered among believers and were corrupting the gospel through their conduct and doctrine. Jude writes as a watchful shepherd who recognizes that spiritual danger must be confronted before it spreads.

1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you…
Php 3:1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.…
2Pe 1:13-15 I think it is right to refresh your memory…

to contend earnestly for the faith

Christians are called to stand firmly for the revealed truth of the gospel. Such contention does not authorize quarrelsome pride or harshness; it requires faithful resistance to error, moral compromise, and any teaching that denies the authority of Christ. The church protects its witness when believers know Scripture, obey it, and refuse to surrender its central truths.

Php 1:27 Nevertheless, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy…
2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race…

entrusted once for all to the saints.

God delivered the apostolic faith as a complete and enduring deposit for His people. The church does not create or revise the gospel but receives, guards, and proclaims what God has made known through Christ and His apostles. Every believer shares responsibility for preserving this truth for future generations.

2Ti 1:13-14 Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching…
1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you.…
Heb 10:10 And by that will, we have been sanctified…

For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—

False teachers had entered the Christian community by stealth, concealing their true character and aims. Jesus warned that false prophets would come in sheep’s clothing, and Paul foretold that corrupt men would arise even from within the church to draw disciples after themselves (Matthew 7:15; Acts 20:29–30). Their hidden entrance called believers to discern doctrine and conduct by the truth revealed in Christ.

ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation.

Their judgment had been recorded beforehand in God’s Word and anticipated in His judgments upon the wicked. Jude will recall Israel’s unbelief in the wilderness, the fallen angels, and Sodom and Gomorrah as historical witnesses that God does not overlook rebellion. Divine foreknowledge never excuses human sin; these men remained accountable for their rejection of God and their corruption of His people.

2Pe 2:3 In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you…
1Pe 2:8 “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.”…
Rom 9:22 What if God, intending to show His wrath…

They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality,

God’s grace saves sinners in order to transform them, not to free them from obedience. The same error confronted Paul when some twisted the promise of grace into permission to continue in sin (Romans 6:1–2). By treating forgiveness as a covering for immoral living, these teachers separated salvation from holiness and led others toward the practices from which Christ delivers His people.

Rom 6:1-2 What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin…
Gal 5:13 For you, brothers, were called to freedom;…
2Pe 2:19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves…

and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Their denial was displayed not only in false teaching but also in lives that rejected Christ’s authority. Jesus is the sovereign Master of those He has redeemed, and every believer is called to submit to Him in faith and obedience. To claim His grace while refusing His lordship is to oppose the One before whom every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord (Philippians 2:9–11).

1Jn 2:22 Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies…
Mat 10:33 But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny…

Although you are fully aware of this,

Jude addresses believers who knew Israel’s history and the Scriptures. Familiarity with God’s works did not remove their need to remember the lessons of judgment, mercy, and perseverance.

2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things…
1Jn 2:20 You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One,…
Rom 15:14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves…

I want to remind you

Faithfulness requires more than possessing knowledge. God’s people must continually recall His past acts so that present temptations and false teaching do not weaken their confidence in Him.

that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt,

Jude identifies the eternal Son as active in Israel’s redemption from Egypt. The Lord who saved Israel through the sea is the same Jesus who saves His people from sin and leads them toward their promised inheritance.

Exo 12:51 And on that very day the LORD brought the Israelites out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…

He destroyed those who did not believe.

The generation that rejected God’s promise at Kadesh-barnea died in the wilderness and did not enter Canaan. Their deliverance from Egypt did not excuse persistent unbelief, and their history warns all who profess faith to continue in trustful obedience to the Lord.

And the angels who did not stay within their own domain

God assigned angels their proper sphere of service under His authority. Some understood Jude to refer to the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:1–4, who abandoned their heavenly station and entered an unlawful union with human women. Their rebellion rejected the order established by the Creator and displayed the same self-exalting defiance seen in Satan’s fall.

Rev 12:7-9 Then a war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels…
Dan 10:13 However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed…

but abandoned their proper dwelling—

These angels willingly forsook the place appointed to them. Their sin was not a limitation imposed by circumstance but a deliberate departure from God’s will. Second Peter 2:4 likewise records that angels sinned and came under divine judgment.

1Pe 3:19-20 in whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison…
Luk 8:31 And the demons kept begging Jesus not to order them…

these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness,

God has confined these fallen angels beneath darkness, removing them from freedom to carry out their rebellion without restraint. The imagery agrees with the judgment of the fallen watchers described in Jewish tradition and reflected in 1 Peter 3:19–20. Their imprisonment reveals that no spiritual power can escape God’s rule.

2Pe 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned…
Isa 24:21-22 In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven…
2Pe 2:17 These men are springs without water and mists…

bound for judgment on that great day.

Their present confinement anticipates the final judgment, when Christ will judge all rebellion and establish His righteous kingdom openly. The certainty of judgment upon angels confirms the certainty of judgment upon humanity, while also magnifying God’s holiness and justice.

Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,…
2Pe 2:9 if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue…
Rev 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it.…

In like manner,

God’s judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah stands with the judgments upon unbelieving Israel and the angels who abandoned their proper place. Rebellion takes differing forms, but God’s holiness and justice remain unchanged.

2Pe 2:6-7 He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah…
Luk 17:28-30 It was the same in the days of Lot: People were eating…

Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them,

These cities of the plain, including Admah and Zeboiim, enjoyed fertile land and prosperity before their destruction (Genesis 13:10; Deuteronomy 29:23). Genesis records that the Lord rained sulfur and fire upon them because their sin had become exceedingly grievous (Genesis 19:24–25).

Gen 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire…
Deu 29:23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt,…

who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh,

The men of Sodom displayed depraved sexual desire in their attempted assault upon Lot’s angelic visitors (Genesis 19:4–11). Their sin included violent corruption, rejection of God’s created order, and a determined pursuit of what God had forbidden. The cities’ wickedness had become public, entrenched, and unrepentant.

Gen 19:4-5 Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city…
Rom 1:26-27 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions.…

are on display as an example

Their overthrow became an enduring warning that God sees human wickedness and acts against it. Jesus also used Sodom’s destruction to warn of the certainty of coming judgment and the greater accountability of those who reject divine revelation (Matthew 10:15; Luke 17:28–30).

1Co 10:6 These things took place as examples to keep us from craving…
1Co 10:11 Now these things happened to them as examples…

of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.

The fire that destroyed the cities foreshadows the final judgment reserved for the ungodly. God’s temporal judgment upon Sodom was real and catastrophic, yet it also points beyond the ruins of those cities to the eternal punishment awaiting all who persist in rebellion against Him.

Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,…
Mat 25:46 And they will go away into eternal punishment,…

Yet in the same way these dreamers

Jude identifies the intruders as people ruled by supposed revelations rather than by God’s revealed truth. Their claims to spiritual insight resemble the false dreamers condemned in Deuteronomy 13:1–5 and Jeremiah 23:25–32. Like unbelieving Israel, the fallen angels, and Sodom and Gomorrah, they rebel against God while imagining themselves secure from judgment.

defile their bodies,

Their distorted teaching produces corrupt conduct. God created the body for holy service, and sexual sin dishonors both the body and the Lord who redeemed it. Believers belong to Christ bodily as well as spiritually and are called to glorify God in both.

reject authority,

Their rebellion extends beyond moral restraint to contempt for Christ’s lordship and the authority He established through His apostles. Their attitude reflects Korah’s rebellion against Moses, in which resistance to God-appointed leadership exposed a deeper refusal to submit to God Himself.

Tit 1:10-11 For many are rebellious and full of empty talk…

and slander glorious beings.

Their arrogance reaches into the unseen realm as they speak contemptuously of angelic authorities. Jude’s reference to Michael in the following verse shows the proper contrast: even a mighty archangel left judgment in the Lord’s hands rather than speaking presumptuously.

But even the archangel Michael,

Michael is Israel’s princely protector in Daniel 10:13, 21 and 12:1, and he leads the heavenly host against Satan in Revelation 12:7. His great authority makes his restraint especially significant.

Satan stands as the adversary of God and accuser of His people. The conflict reveals the unseen spiritual warfare surrounding God’s redemptive purposes.

over the body of Moses,

Moses died under God’s discipline and was buried by the Lord in an unknown place (Deuteronomy 34:5–6). Jude records an event not narrated in the Old Testament, likely preserving a true historical tradition concerning Moses’ burial. The hidden grave prevented Israel from turning the remains of its great lawgiver into an object of veneration.

Michael did not assume the right to pronounce condemnation in his own authority, even against the devil. Jude contrasts such restraint with ungodly teachers who recklessly revile realities beyond their understanding.

Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…
1Pe 2:23 When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate…

but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

Michael entrusted judgment to the Lord, echoing the rebuke of Satan in Zechariah 3:2. God alone possesses final authority over Satan and every spiritual power.

Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…
Mrk 1:25 But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said.…
Luk 4:35 But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said.…

These men, however, slander what they do not understand,

Jude exposes the arrogant ignorance of intruders who rejected apostolic truth while speaking contemptuously about realities beyond their spiritual comprehension, including God’s authority and the order He has established. Unlike Michael, who refused to pronounce a reviling judgment even against the devil, these teachers spoke boldly against what God had revealed. Their conduct parallels the false teachers condemned in 2 Peter 2:12 and recalls those who attributed Christ’s works to demonic power rather than receiving the testimony of God.

2Pe 2:12 These men are like irrational animals, creatures of instinct…
Job 38:2 Who is this who obscures My counsel by words…
Pro 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it—…

and like irrational animals,

Having rejected the light of divine revelation, they operated according to fallen appetites rather than wisdom, conscience, and submission to the Spirit. Scripture contrasts such instinct-driven living with the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom. Though made in God’s image, people who abandon His truth descend into conduct resembling creatures governed only by appetite.

they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.

Their corrupt desires would become the means of their ruin. What they pursued for pleasure, influence, and self-gratification would bring corruption and divine judgment. Jude affirms the biblical principle that those who sow to the flesh reap destruction, while God’s final judgment separates the unrepentant from His presence.

Woe to them!

God’s judgment rests upon false teachers who have entered the church while denying the Lord by their conduct and teaching. Their influence brings spiritual ruin because they turn grace into an excuse for immorality.

Hab 2:6 Will not all of these take up a taunt against him…

They have traveled the path of Cain;

Cain approached God on his own terms, rejected God’s correction, and allowed jealousy to grow into hatred and murder (Genesis 4:1–16). Like Cain, these men resent those who truly belong to God and oppose righteousness rather than repent of their sin.

Balaam knew God’s will concerning Israel, yet his desire for Balak’s reward led him to seek a way around God’s command (Numbers 22–24). He later enticed Israel into idolatry and sexual immorality through Moabite influence (Numbers 31:16; Revelation 2:14). Greed makes truth negotiable and leads others into sin.

Korah rejected the authority God had established through Moses and Aaron, gathering others in defiance of the Lord (Numbers 16). God publicly judged the rebellion, demonstrating that contempt for His appointed servants was contempt for Him. Jude warns that those who reject Christ’s authority and corrupt His people share Korah’s doomed end.

These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,

The false teachers had entered the church’s shared meals, or love feasts, where believers expressed fellowship and remembered Christ’s self-giving love. Rather than caring for Christ’s flock, they used the church for their own appetites, influence, and advantage. Their conduct stood in direct opposition to Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who gave His life for the sheep (John 10:11), and to faithful elders who are called to serve willingly and as examples to the flock (1 Peter 5:2–3).

They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind;

Their teaching created expectations of spiritual refreshment but provided no truth capable of nourishing faith or producing holiness. Autumn is the season when fruit should be evident, yet these teachers produced nothing that honored God. Their uprooted condition portrays divine judgment and final removal, like trees cut down because they bear no good fruit (Matthew 7:19). Those who lead others away from Christ reveal the deadly end of a profession that has no obedience, truth, or spiritual fruit.

Jude portrays the false teachers as restless, destructive, and incapable of producing peace. Isaiah likewise compares the wicked to a troubled sea that cannot rest and continually casts up mire and dirt (Isaiah 57:20). Their influence unsettles the church and threatens those carried along by their disorder.

wandering stars,

The heavenly lights ordinarily served as dependable guides for travelers, but wandering stars offered no fixed course. Rom 3:19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says…
Rom 2:16 on the day when God will judge men’s secrets…

of every ungodly act of wickedness

God sees every sinful work, including deeds concealed from human sight. Jude’s warning reaches beyond notorious evil to the settled pattern of rebellion that refuses God’s authority. The holiness of God requires judgment, yet the gospel announces forgiveness and cleansing for all who turn to Christ in faith.

Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven…
Col 3:5-6 Put to death, therefore, the components…
Eph 5:11 Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds…

and every harsh word spoken against Him

Rebellious speech against God includes blasphemy, arrogant accusation, and contempt for His ways. Words reveal the condition of the heart, and Christ taught that people will give account for their speech. Israel’s complaints against the Lord in the wilderness illustrate the seriousness of treating God’s goodness and authority with scorn.

Mal 3:13 “Your words against Me have been harsh,” says the LORD.…
Isa 37:23 Whom have you taunted and blasphemed? Against whom…
Psa 74:18 Remember how the enemy has mocked You, O LORD,…

by ungodly sinners.”

The repeated description underscores the deliberate opposition of those who persist in sin. Jude contrasts such people with believers who are called to remain in God’s love and await the mercy of Jesus Christ. The certainty of judgment strengthens the church to reject false teaching, live reverently, and trust the righteous Judge.

1Ti 1:9 We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous,…
2Pe 3:7 And by that same word, the present heavens and earth…
Psa 1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,…

These men are discontented grumblers,

Jude exposes the character of the ungodly intruders troubling the churches. Like Israel in the wilderness, who complained against the Lord after witnessing His deliverance and receiving His provision (Exodus 16:2–3), they resented God’s order and rejected grateful trust. Persistent discontent reveals a heart unwilling to submit to God’s wise rule, unlike the learned contentment rooted in Christ’s strength (Philippians 4:11–13).

Num 14:27 How long will this wicked congregation grumble against Me?…
Psa 106:25 They grumbled in their tents and did not listen…
1Co 10:10 And do not complain, as some of them did,…

following after their own lusts;

Their conduct was governed by sinful desires rather than obedience to God. Jude has already connected them with those who pervert grace into sensuality and deny the authority of Jesus Christ (Jude 1:4). Such self-directed living follows the pattern of the flesh condemned throughout Scripture and produces corruption, division, and spiritual ruin (Galatians 5:19–21).

2Pe 2:10 Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge…
Rom 1:24 Therefore God gave them over to impurity…
Tit 3:3 For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled…

their mouths spew arrogance;

Boastful speech displayed pride before God and contempt for His truth. Their claims likely magnified their own supposed insight or spiritual authority while diminishing the authority of the apostles and the lordship of Christ. Pride precedes destruction (Proverbs 16:18), but God gives grace to the humble who receive His Word with reverence (James 4:6).

Psa 94:4 They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast.
Psa 17:10 They have closed their callous hearts;…
2Pe 2:18 With lofty but empty words, they appeal…

they flatter others for their own advantage.

Their praise was not sincere love but manipulation designed to gain influence, protection, or material benefit. Such partiality and deception stood opposed to the example of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve and to give His life for others (Mark 10:45). Faithful believers speak truth in love rather than using words to advance themselves.

2Pe 2:3 In their greed, these false teachers will exploit you…
Rom 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ…
Pro 29:5 A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

A Call to Persevere

But you, beloved,

Jude turns from the corrupt teachers to the faithful believers, whom God loves and has called to belong to Jesus Christ. Their security and identity rest not in the character of the ungodly around them but in God’s preserving grace and in the fellowship of the church.

2Pe 3:17 Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things…
1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test…
1Co 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

remember what was foretold

Spiritual discernment requires more than reacting to present dangers; it requires holding firmly to the revealed truth already received. The appearance of deceivers had not caught God by surprise, and remembering the warnings of Scripture would keep the believers from being unsettled or drawn away.

2Pe 3:2 by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets…
2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things…
Heb 2:1 We must pay closer attention, therefore,…

by the apostles

The apostles had warned that false teachers, scoffers, and divisions would arise within the visible Christian community. As commissioned witnesses of Christ and the foundation of the church’s teaching, they provided an authoritative standard by which every later message and teacher must be tested.

Act 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…
Act 1:2 until the day He was taken up to heaven,…
Eph 2:20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets…

of our Lord Jesus Christ

The apostolic warnings carried the authority of the risen Lord who sent them. Jesus Christ is Lord over His church, and His word exposes those who deny Him by their conduct while preserving those who continue in the faith once delivered to the saints.

1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:…
Gal 1:12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it;…
1Th 4:2 For you know the instructions we gave you…

when they said to you,

Jude recalls the warnings given by the apostles, whose teaching formed the recognized foundation of the churches. Peter similarly warned that scoffers would arise in the last days, confirming that Jude’s readers had received this instruction before (2 Peter 3:3). The apostolic warnings were not meant to produce fear but steadfastness, preparing believers to recognize error and remain faithful to the gospel once delivered to the saints.

2Pe 3:2 by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets…
Act 20:29-30 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come…
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate…

“In the last times

The last times began with Christ’s first coming and continue until His visible return in glory. God’s saving purposes have reached their climactic stage through the death, resurrection, ascension, and promised return of Jesus Christ. The spread of the gospel occurs alongside growing rebellion, deception, and hostility toward God’s truth.

2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days…
1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times…
Heb 1:2 But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son…

there will be scoffers

Scoffers treat divine revelation with contempt and reject God’s authority over their lives. Their mockery often includes denial of Christ’s return, the reality of judgment, and the moral demands of the gospel. Their presence does not undermine God’s promises; it fulfills the warnings given by Christ and His apostles.

2Pe 3:3 Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days…
Pro 1:22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways?”…
Pro 29:8 Mockers inflame a city, but the wise turn away anger.

who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”

Their rejection of truth is joined to a life directed by sinful desire rather than obedience to God. Jude identifies moral corruption as a defining mark of false teachers, for distorted doctrine commonly serves to excuse ungodly conduct. Believers must therefore discern teaching not only by its claims but also by its faithfulness to Christ and the fruit it produces.

2Pe 2:10 Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge…
Rom 1:24-28 Therefore God gave them over to impurity…
Jas 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires…

These are the ones who cause divisions,

Jude identifies the corrupt intruders who had slipped into the churches and disrupted the fellowship of believers. Their influence separated Christians from sound doctrine and from one another, often by promoting moral license and rejecting apostolic authority. Paul likewise instructed the Roman believers to watch for those who create divisions contrary to the doctrine they had received and to avoid them (Romans 16:17). Christ prayed that His people would be one in truth, reflecting the unity of the Father and the Son before a watching world (John 17:21).

Tit 3:10 Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition,
Rom 16:17 Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who…
1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…

who are worldly

Their lives were governed by natural desires and earthly priorities rather than submission to God. They belonged to the pattern of a fallen world that resists God’s rule and exalts pleasure, self-interest, and human autonomy. Believers are called instead to refuse conformity to the world’s values, to set their minds on things above, and to live in obedience to Christ (Romans 12:2; Colossians 3:2).

Jas 3:15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly…
1Co 3:1-3 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual…
Rom 8:5-8 Those who live according to the flesh…

and devoid of the Spirit.

Their rebellion revealed that they did not possess the Holy Spirit, whose indwelling marks everyone who belongs to Christ (Romans 8:9). The Spirit teaches, sanctifies, empowers, and produces godly fruit in believers. Without Him, people remain ruled by the flesh and cannot truly discern or embrace the things of God (Galatians 5:16–23; 1 Corinthians 2:14).

Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,…
1Co 2:14 The natural man does not accept the things that…
Jhn 14:17 The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him…

But you, beloved,

Jude turns from the corrupt teachers destined for judgment to believers whom God loves and whom he calls to persevere. The congregation belonged to Christ, not to those who had crept in among them and distorted grace into license. Their security and identity rested in God’s preserving love, even amid spiritual danger.

2Pe 3:17 Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things…
2Pe 3:14 Therefore, beloved, as you anticipate these things,…
1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…

by building yourselves up in your most holy faith

Believers are called to grow together upon the apostolic faith once for all delivered to the saints. The faith is holy because it comes from God and centers on the saving work of Jesus Christ. Growth requires receiving biblical truth, obeying it, encouraging one another, and guarding the church from teachings that deny Christ’s authority or excuse sin. Christ remains the foundation, and every believer is to build a life that endures before him.

Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith…
Act 20:32 And now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace,…
1Th 5:11 Therefore encourage and build one another up…

and praying in the Holy Spirit,

Prayer is to be shaped and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, who leads God’s people into fellowship with the Father through the Son. The Spirit helps believers pray according to God’s will, especially when weakness, temptation, or suffering makes words difficult. Such prayer depends on God rather than human strength and keeps the church spiritually alert in a world marked by unbelief and error.

Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer…
Rom 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness…
Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son…

keep yourselves in the love of God

Jude calls believers to remain in the secure place of obedient fellowship with God. God’s love initiates and sustains salvation, yet Christians are commanded to guard their lives from the false teaching and moral corruption described throughout the letter. Prayer in the Holy Spirit, growth in faith, obedience to Christ, and fellowship with faithful believers preserve them from drifting into the rebellion of those who reject God’s authority. Jesus gave the same instruction when He told His disciples to abide in His love by keeping His commandments (John 15:9–10).

Jhn 15:9-10 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.…
1Jn 2:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God…
Jhn 14:21 Whoever has My commandments and keeps them……

as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ

Christian perseverance is sustained by a forward-looking hope. Believers await Christ’s visible return, when His mercy will bring them through final judgment and into the fullness of redemption. The Judge of all the earth is also the Savior who gave Himself for His people. This expectation calls God’s people to holiness and steadfastness while they live in a world marked by unbelief and deception.

1Pe 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!…
1Pe 1:13 Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded.…
Heb 9:28 so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins…

to bring you eternal life.

Eternal life is already known through faith in Jesus Christ, but it will be fully revealed when He raises His people and removes every trace of sin, suffering, and death. The mercy of Christ will culminate in the promised life of the age to come, fulfilling God’s purpose to dwell with His redeemed people forever.

Jhn 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.…
Jhn 17:2-3 For You granted Him authority over all people,…
1Jn 5:11-13 And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life,…

And indeed,

Jude continues his instruction to believers living amid the destructive influence of false teachers. Their response was not to be harsh or indifferent toward those unsettled by error, but to act with discernment, humility, and urgent care.

Rom 15:1 We who are strong ought to bear with the shortcomings…
Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass,…
1Th 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly…

have mercy

God’s people are to reflect the mercy they have received in Christ. Mercy does not excuse unbelief or compromise with false teaching; it patiently seeks the restoration of those endangered by it. Jesus commended the merciful, and believers are called to bear one another’s burdens with gentleness.

on those who doubt;

Some within the churches were wavering because deceptive teachers had distorted the truth and promoted ungodliness. Such people needed patient instruction, reassurance from God’s Word, and loving support from faithful believers. Rather than treating every doubter as an enemy, the church was to help the uncertain regain a firm confidence in the gospel.

Mrk 9:24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe…”…
Jas 1:6-8 But he must ask in faith, without doubting…

save others by snatching them from the fire;

Spiritual deception and persistent sin place people in danger of God’s judgment. Believers are called to act urgently, bringing the truth of the gospel to those drifting toward destruction. Zechariah 3:2 portrays Joshua the high priest as “a brand plucked from the fire,” rescued by God’s mercy despite Israel’s guilt. Such rescue does not rest on human power but on the saving work of Christ, proclaimed through faithful witness and patient discipleship.

Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…
Amo 4:11 Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,…
1Co 3:15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss.…

and to still others show mercy tempered with fear,

Mercy is required toward those entangled in sin, since restoration aims at repentance rather than condemnation. Yet those who seek to restore the fallen must remain watchful over their own hearts. Galatians 6:1 commands spiritual believers to restore others gently while guarding against temptation. Reverence for God’s holiness and sober awareness of sin prevent compassion from becoming participation in evil.

hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.

Defiled clothing pictures the visible contamination of a sinful life. The believer must reject not only open rebellion but every influence that carries sin’s corrupting stain. God’s people are to pursue holiness because they belong to the Holy One, refusing fellowship with the works of darkness while extending the mercy of Christ to those who need deliverance.

Doxology

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling

God possesses both the power and faithfulness to preserve His people from ruinous apostasy. He watches over them without sleep, as Psalm 121:3 declares, and supplies grace for steadfast obedience amid temptation and error.

1Th 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify…
Psa 121:3 He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector…
Jhn 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.…

and to present you unblemished

God’s saving work reaches its appointed end when believers stand purified before Him. The unblemished sacrifices required under the Law anticipated Christ, the sinless Lamb whose sacrifice cleanses His people and prepares them to be presented holy and blameless.

Col 1:22 But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body…
Eph 5:27 and to present her to Himself as a glorious church,…
2Pe 3:14 Therefore, beloved, as you anticipate these things,…

in His glorious presence,

The final hope of salvation is life before the unveiled glory of God. What sinful humanity could not endure apart from atonement will become the believer’s eternal dwelling, fulfilled when God dwells with His redeemed people in the new creation.

Rev 22:4 They will see His face, and His name will be…
Col 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then……

with great joy—

Those whom God preserves and cleanses will enter His presence with exultation rather than fear. Their joy will arise from completed redemption, fellowship with God, and the everlasting victory of the Lamb.

Mat 25:21 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’…

to the only God our Savior

God alone is the true and living God, the Creator, Redeemer, and Keeper of His people. Israel’s confession, “The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4), stands behind this praise. God declared through Isaiah, “Apart from me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:11); salvation originates in His mercy and power, not in human effort or any rival power. Jude directs the assurance of believers’ preservation to the God who saves sinners and will bring them safely into His presence.

Tit 1:3 In His own time He has made His word evident…
1Ti 1:17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, …

be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority

Glory belongs to God because His character and works are infinitely worthy of praise. Majesty honors His kingly splendor, while dominion and authority confess His absolute rule over every creature, power, and age. No enemy of the gospel, no false teacher, and no circumstance lies beyond His sovereign government. The God who is able to keep His people from stumbling possesses all power necessary to fulfill His saving purpose.

through Jesus Christ our Lord

God’s saving glory is revealed and received through Jesus Christ, the crucified, risen, and reigning Lord. Jesus alone brings sinners to the Father, having given Himself as the sacrifice for sin and serving as the believers’ mediator. His lordship will be openly acknowledged by every knee and every tongue (Philippians 2:9–11). Praise offered to God is inseparable from the saving work and divine authority of His Son.

Rom 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith…
1Co 8:6 Yet for us there is but one God, the Father…
Eph 3:11 according to the eternal purpose…

before all time, and now, and for all eternity.

God’s glory, rule, and authority did not begin with creation and will never end. Before the ages began, God was fully sovereign; in the present age, He remains active in preserving His people; throughout eternity, His reign will stand unchanged. The future promised in Jude rests on the unchanging faithfulness of God.

2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling…
Rev 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,…
Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You brought forth…

Amen.

Amen, meaning “so be it” or “truly,” seals the doxology with believing affirmation: it is true, and it shall be so. God’s people answer His revealed truth with worshipful confidence in His saving power and eternal reign.

2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.…
Rom 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.…
