David Anointed King of All Israel
(2 Samuel 5:1–5)

1  וַיִּקָּבְצ֧וּ (And came together) כָֽל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֖יד (David) חֶבְר֣וֹנָה (at Hebron), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), עַצְמְךָ֥ (your bone) וּֽבְשָׂרְךָ֖ (and your flesh) אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃ (we are). 2  גַּם־ (Even) תְּמ֣וֹל (in time past), גַּם־ (even) שִׁלְשׁ֗וֹם (before), גַּ֚ם (even) בִּהְי֣וֹת (when was) שָׁא֣וּל (Saul) מֶ֔לֶךְ (king), אַתָּ֛ה (you were) הַמּוֹצִ֥יא (the one who led out) וְהַמֵּבִ֖יא (and brought in) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ (your God) לְךָ֗ (to you), אַתָּ֨ה (You) תִרְעֶ֤ה (shall shepherd) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּי֙ (My people) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וְאַתָּה֙ (and you) תִּהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) נָגִ֔יד (ruler) עַ֖ל (over) עַמִּ֥י (My people) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

3  וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ (And came) כָּל־ (all) זִקְנֵ֨י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) חֶבְר֔וֹנָה (at Hebron), וַיִּכְרֹת֩ (and made) לָהֶ֨ם (with them) דָּוִ֥יד (David) בְּרִ֛ית (a covenant) בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן (at Hebron) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH). וַיִּמְשְׁח֨וּ (And they anointed) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֤יד (David) לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ (king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), כִּדְבַ֥ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by) שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃ס (Samuel).

David Conquers Jerusalem
(2 Samuel 5:6–11)

4  וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ (And went) דָּוִ֧יד (David) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (to Jerusalem), הִ֣יא (that is) יְב֑וּס (Jebus), וְשָׁם֙ (and there were) הַיְבוּסִ֔י (the Jebusite) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

5  וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (And said) יֹשְׁבֵ֤י (the dwellers) יְבוּס֙ (of Jebus) לְדָוִ֔יד (to David), לֹ֥א (Not) תָב֖וֹא (you shall come) הֵ֑נָּה (in here).

וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד (And took) דָּוִיד֙ (David) אֶת־ (-) מְצֻדַ֣ת (the stronghold) צִיּ֔וֹן (of Zion) הִ֖יא (that is) עִ֥יר (the City) דָּוִֽיד׃ (of David))

6  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) דָּוִ֔יד (David), כָּל־ (Whoever) מַכֵּ֤ה (strikes) יְבוּסִי֙ (the Jebusite) בָּרִ֣אשׁוֹנָ֔ה (first) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לְרֹ֖אשׁ (head) וּלְשָׂ֑ר (and chief).

וַיַּ֧עַל (And went up) בָּרִאשׁוֹנָ֛ה (first) יוֹאָ֥ב (Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֖ה (of Zeruiah), וַיְהִ֥י (and he became) לְרֹֽאשׁ׃ (head).

7  וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב (And dwelt) דָּוִ֖יד (David) בַּמְצָ֑ד (in the stronghold); עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) קָרְאוּ־ (they called) ל֖וֹ (it) עִ֥יר (the City) דָּוִֽיד׃ (of David). 8  וַיִּ֤בֶן (And he built) הָעִיר֙ (the city) מִסָּבִ֔יב (around it), מִן־ (from) הַמִּלּ֖וֹא (the Millo) וְעַד־ (and) הַסָּבִ֑יב (to the surrounding area), וְיוֹאָ֕ב (and Joab) יְחַיֶּ֖ה (repaired) אֶת־ (-) שְׁאָ֥ר (the rest) הָעִֽיר׃ (of the city).

9  וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And went) דָּוִ֖יד (David), הָל֣וֹךְ (going on) וְגָד֑וֹל (and becoming great), וַיהוָ֥ה (and YHWH) צְבָא֖וֹת (of Hosts) עִמּֽוֹ׃פ (was with him).

David’s Mighty Men
(2 Samuel 23:8–39)

10  וְאֵ֨לֶּה (And these) רָאשֵׁ֤י (were the heads) הַגִּבּוֹרִים֙ (of the mighty) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) לְדָוִ֔יד (unto David), הַמִּתְחַזְּקִ֨ים (who strengthened themselves) עִמּ֧וֹ (with him) בְמַלְכוּת֛וֹ (in his kingdom), עִם־ (with) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel), לְהַמְלִיכ֑וֹ (to make him king) כִּדְבַ֥ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) עַל־ (concerning) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (Israel). 11  וְאֵ֛לֶּה (And these are) מִסְפַּ֥ר (the numbers) הַגִּבֹּרִ֖ים (of the mighty men) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) לְדָוִ֑יד (David had):

יָשָׁבְעָ֣ם (Jashobeam) בֶּן־ (son) חַכְמוֹנִ֗י (of a Hachmonite), רֹ֚אשׁ (chief) הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁים (of the captains); הֽוּא־ (he) עוֹרֵ֧ר (lifted up) אֶת־ (-) חֲנִית֛וֹ (his spear) עַל־ (against) שְׁלֹשׁ־ (three) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) חָלָ֖ל (he wounded) בְּפַ֥עַם (at time) אֶחָֽת׃ (one).

12  וְאַחֲרָ֛יו (And after him) אֶלְעָזָ֥ר (was Eleazar) בֶּן־ (son) דּוֹד֖וֹ (of Dodo) הָאֲחוֹחִ֑י (the Ahohite)— ה֖וּא (he) בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁ֥ה (of three) הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ (the mighty). 13  הֽוּא־ (He) הָיָ֨ה (was) עִם־ (with) דָּוִ֜יד (David) בַּפַּ֣ס (at Pas-) דַּמִּ֗ים (dammim), וְהַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ (and the Philistines) נֶאֱסְפוּ־ (were gathered) שָׁ֣ם (there) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (for battle). וַתְּהִ֛י (And there was) חֶלְקַ֥ת (a portion) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of ground) מְלֵאָ֣ה (full) שְׂעוֹרִ֑ים (of barley), וְהָעָ֥ם (and the people) נָ֖סוּ (fled) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from) פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (the Philistines). 14  וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֤וּ (And they stationed themselves) בְתוֹךְ־ (in the midst) הַחֶלְקָה֙ (of the portion), וַיַּצִּיל֔וּהָ (and snatched it up) וַיַּכּ֖וּ (and struck) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (the Philistines). וַיּ֥וֹשַׁע (And brought about) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה (a victory) גְדוֹלָֽה׃ (great).

15  וַיֵּרְד֡וּ (And went down) שְֽׁלוֹשָׁה֩ (three) מִן־ (of) הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁ֨ים (the thirty) רֹ֤אשׁ (chief men) עַל־ (to) הַצֻּר֙ (the rock) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֔יד (David), אֶל־ (into) מְעָרַ֖ת (the cave) עֲדֻלָּ֑ם (of Adullam); וּמַחֲנֵ֣ה (and the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines) חֹנָ֖ה (was encamped) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) רְפָאִֽים׃ (of Rephaim). 16  וְדָוִ֖יד (And David was) אָ֣ז (then) בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה (in the stronghold), וּנְצִ֣יב (and the garrison) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines) אָ֖ז (was then) בְּבֵ֥ית (in Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem). 17  וַיִּתְאָו (And longed) דָּוִ֖יד (David) וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), מִ֚י (Who) יַשְׁקֵ֣נִי (will give me a drink) מַ֔יִם (of water) מִבּ֥וֹר (from the well) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) לֶ֖חֶם (lehem), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃ (by the gate)!

18  וַיִּבְקְע֨וּ (And broke through) הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֜ה (the Three) בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים (of the Philistines), וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־ (and they drew) מַ֙יִם֙ (water) מִבּ֤וֹר (from the well) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) לֶ֙חֶם֙ (lehem) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בַּשַּׁ֔עַר (by the gate), וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ (and they lifted it) וַיָּבִ֣אוּ (and brought it) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֑יד (David). וְלֹֽא־ (And not) אָבָ֤ה (would) דָוִיד֙ (David) לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֔ם (drink it), וַיְנַסֵּ֥ךְ (and he poured out) אֹתָ֖ם (it) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH), 19  וַיֹּ֡אמֶר (and he said), חָלִילָה֩ (Far be it) לִּ֨י (from me) מֵאֱלֹהַ֜י (my God) מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת (that I should do) זֹ֗את (this); הֲדַ֣ם (shall the blood) הָאֲנָשִׁים֩ (of the men) הָאֵ֨לֶּה (these) אֶשְׁתֶּ֤ה (I drink) בְנַפְשׁוֹתָם֙ (with their lives)? כִּ֣י (For) בְנַפְשׁוֹתָ֣ם (with their lives) הֱבִיא֔וּם (they brought it). וְלֹ֥א (And not) אָבָ֖ה (he would) לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֑ם (drink it).

אֵ֣לֶּה (These things) עָשׂ֔וּ (were done) שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת (by the three) הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃ (mighty men).

20  וְאַבְשַׁ֣י (And Abishai) אֲחִֽי־ (the brother) יוֹאָ֗ב (of Joab), ה֤וּא (he) הָיָה֙ (was) רֹ֣אשׁ (chief) הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֔ה (of the Three), וְהוּא֙ (and He) עוֹרֵ֣ר (wielded) אֶת־ (-) חֲנִית֔וֹ (his spear) עַל־ (against) שְׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred), חָלָ֑ל (killed them), וְלֹא (and won) שֵׁ֖ם (a name) בַּשְּׁלוֹשָֽׁה׃ (among the three). 21  מִן־ (Above) הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֤ה (the three) בַשְּׁנַ֙יִם֙ (doubly) נִכְבָּ֔ד (he was honored); וַיְהִ֥י (and he became) לָהֶ֖ם (unto them) לְשָׂ֑ר (captain). וְעַד־ (And to) הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה (the Three). לֹֽא־ (Not) בָֽא׃ס (he did attain).

22  בְּנָיָ֨ה (Benaiah was) בֶן־ (the son) יְהוֹיָדָ֧ע (of Jehoiada) בֶּן־ (the son) אִֽישׁ־ (of a man) חַ֛יִל (of valor) רַב־ (of great) פְּעָלִ֖ים (deeds) מִֽן־ (from) קַבְצְאֵ֑ל (Kabzeel): ה֣וּא (He) הִכָּ֗ה (struck down) אֵ֣ת (-) שְׁנֵ֤י (two) אֲרִיאֵל֙ (champions) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab), וְ֠הוּא (and He) יָרַ֞ד (went down) וְהִכָּ֧ה (and killed) אֶֽת־ (-) הָאֲרִ֛י (the lion) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הַבּ֖וֹר (of a pit) בְּי֥וֹם (on the day) הַשָּֽׁלֶג׃ (of the snow). 23  וְהֽוּא־ (And he) הִכָּה֩ (killed) אֶת־ (-) הָאִ֨ישׁ (-) הַמִּצְרִ֜י (an Egyptian), אִ֥ישׁ (a man) מִדָּ֣ה׀ (of measure) חָמֵ֣שׁ (five) בָּאַמָּ֗ה (by the cubit), וּבְיַ֨ד (and in the hand) הַמִּצְרִ֤י (of the Egyptian) חֲנִית֙ (was a spear) כִּמְנ֣וֹר (like a beam) אֹרְגִ֔ים (of weavers). וַיֵּ֥רֶד (And he went down) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) בַּשָּׁ֑בֶט (with a staff), וַיִּגְזֹ֤ל (and wrested) אֶֽת־ (-) הַחֲנִית֙ (the spear) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) הַמִּצְרִ֔י (of the Egyptian), וַיַּהַרְגֵ֖הוּ (and he killed him) בַּחֲנִיתֽוֹ׃ (with his own spear). 24  אֵ֣לֶּה (These things) עָשָׂ֔ה (did) בְּנָיָ֖הוּ (Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע (of Jehoiada), וְלוֹ־ (and to him) שֵׁ֖ם (was a name) בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁ֥ה (among the three) הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ (mighty men). 25  מִן־ (Than) הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁ֗ים (the thirty) הִנּ֤וֹ (indeed) נִכְבָּד֙ (was more honored) ה֔וּא (he), וְאֶל־ (and to) הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה (the three) לֹא־ (not) בָ֑א (he did attain). וַיְשִׂימֵ֥הוּ (And set him) דָוִ֖יד (David) עַל־ (over) מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃ס (his guard).

26  וְגִבּוֹרֵ֖י (And the mighty men) הַחֲיָלִ֑ים (of the armies):

עֲשָׂה־ (Asah-) אֵל֙ (el) אֲחִ֣י (the brother) יוֹאָ֔ב (of Joab),

אֶלְחָנָ֥ן (Elhanan) בֶּן־ (son) דּוֹד֖וֹ (of Dodo) מִבֵּ֥ית (of Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ס (lehem),

27  שַׁמּוֹת֙ (Shammoth) הַהֲרוֹרִ֔י (the Harorite),

חֶ֖לֶץ (Helez) הַפְּלוֹנִֽי׃ס (the Pelonite),

28  עִירָ֤א (Ira) בֶן־ (son) עִקֵּשׁ֙ (of Ikkesh) הַתְּקוֹעִ֔י (the Tekoite),

אֲבִיעֶ֖זֶר (Abiezer) הָעֲנְּתוֹתִֽי׃ס (the Anathothite),

29  סִבְּכַי֙ (Sibbechai) הַחֻ֣שָׁתִ֔י (the Hushathite),

עִילַ֖י (Ilai) הָאֲחוֹחִֽי׃ס (the Ahohite),

30  מַהְרַי֙ (Maharai) הַנְּטֹ֣פָתִ֔י (the Netophathite),

חֵ֥לֶד (Heled) בֶּֽן־ (son) בַּֽעֲנָ֖ה (of Baanah) הַנְּטוֹפָתִֽי׃ס (the Netophathite),

31  אִיתַ֣י (Ithai) בֶּן־ (son) רִיבַ֗י (of Ribai) מִגִּבְעַת֙ (of Gibeah) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֔ןס (of Benjamin),

בְּנָיָ֖ה (Benaiah) הַפִּרְעָתֹנִֽי׃ (the Pirathonite),

32  חוּרַי֙ (Hurai) מִנַּ֣חֲלֵי (of the brooks) גָ֔עַשׁס (of Gaash),

אֲבִיאֵ֖ל (Abiel) הָעַרְבָתִֽי׃ס (the Arbathite),

33  עַזְמָ֙וֶת֙ (Azmaveth) הַבַּ֣חֲרוּמִ֔י (the Baharumite),

אֶלְיַחְבָּ֖א (Eliahba) הַשַּׁעַלְבֹנִֽי׃ס (the Shaalbonite),

34  בְּנֵ֗י (the sons) הָשֵׁם֙ (of Hashem) הַגִּ֣זוֹנִ֔י (the Gizonite),

יוֹנָתָ֥ן (Jonathan) בֶּן־ (son) שָׁגֵ֖ה (of Shageh) הַהֲרָרִֽי׃ס (the Hararite),

35  אֲחִיאָ֧ם (Ahiam) בֶּן־ (son) שָׂכָ֛ר (of Sachar) הַהֲרָרִ֖י (the Hararite),

אֱלִיפַ֥ל (Eliphal) בֶּן־ (son) אֽוּר׃ס (of Ur),

36  חֵ֚פֶר (Hepher) הַמְּכֵ֣רָתִ֔י (the Mecherathite),

אֲחִיָּ֖ה (Ahijah) הַפְּלֹנִֽי׃ס (the Pelonite),

37  חֶצְרוֹ֙ (Hezro) הַֽכַּרְמְלִ֔י (the Carmelite),

נַעֲרַ֖י (Naarai) בֶּן־ (son) אֶזְבָּֽי׃ס (of Ezbai),

38  יוֹאֵל֙ (Joel) אֲחִ֣י (the brother) נָתָ֔ן (of Nathan),

מִבְחָ֖ר (Mibhar) בֶּן־ (son) הַגְרִֽי׃ס (of Hagri),

39  צֶ֖לֶק (Zelek) הָעַמּוֹנִ֑י (the Ammonite),

נַחְרַי֙ (Naharai) הַבֵּ֣רֹתִ֔י (the Beerothite), נֹשֵׂ֕א (bearer) כְּלֵ֖י (of the armor) יוֹאָ֥ב (of Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָֽה׃ס (of Zeruiah),

40  עִירָא֙ (Ira) הַיִּתְרִ֔י (the Ithrite),

גָּרֵ֖ב (Gareb) הַיִּתְרִֽי׃ס (the Ithrite),

41  אֽוּרִיָּה֙ (Uriah) הַחִתִּ֔י (the Hittite),

זָבָ֖ד (Zabad) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְלָֽי׃ס (of Ahlai),

42  עֲדִינָ֨א (Adina) בֶן־ (son) שִׁיזָ֜א (of Shiza) הָרֽאוּבֵנִ֗י (the Reubenite), רֹ֛אשׁ (a chief) לָרֽאוּבֵנִ֖י (of the Reubenite), וְעָלָ֥יו (and with him) שְׁלוֹשִֽׁים׃ס (thirty),

43  חָנָן֙ (Hanan) בֶּֽן־ (son) מַעֲכָ֔ה (of Maacah),

וְיוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (and Joshaphat) הַמִּתְנִֽי׃ס (the Mithnite),

44  עֻזִיָּ֖א (Uzzia) הָעֲשְׁתְּרָתִ֑י (the Ashterathite),

שָׁמָע֙ (Shama) וִיעוּאֵל (and Jeiel) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) חוֹתָ֥ם (of Hotham) הָעֲרֹעֵרִֽי׃ס (the Aroerite),

45  יְדִֽיעֲאֵל֙ (Jediael) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁמְרִ֔י (of Shimri), וְיֹחָ֥א (and Joha) אָחִ֖יו (his brother), הַתִּיצִֽי׃ס (the Tizite),

46  אֱלִיאֵל֙ (Eliel) הַֽמַּחֲוִ֔ים (the Mahavite),

וִירִיבַ֥י (and Jeribai), וְיוֹשַׁוְיָ֖ה (and Joshaviah), בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) אֶלְנָ֑עַם (of Elnaam),

וְיִתְמָ֖ה (and Ithmah) הַמּוֹאָבִֽי׃ (the Moabite),

47  אֱלִיאֵ֣ל (Eliel), וְעוֹבֵ֔ד (and Obed), וְיַעֲשִׂיאֵ֖ל (and Jaasiel) הַמְּצֹבָיָֽה׃פ (the Mezobaite).
