The Covenant in Moab

1  אֵלֶּה֩ (These are) דִבְרֵ֨י (the words) הַבְּרִ֜ית (of the covenant) אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֧ה (commanded) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses) לִכְרֹ֛ת (to make) אֶת־ (with) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab), מִלְּבַ֣ד (besides) הַבְּרִ֔ית (the covenant) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) כָּרַ֥ת (He made) אִתָּ֖ם (with them) בְּחֹרֵֽב׃פ (in Horeb).

2  וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And called) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them), אַתֶּ֣ם (You⁺) רְאִיתֶ֗ם (have seen) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) עָשָׂ֨ה (did) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) לְעֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ (before your⁺ eyes) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) לְפַרְעֹ֥ה (to Pharaoh), וּלְכָל־ (and to all) עֲבָדָ֖יו (his servants), וּלְכָל־ (and to all) אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (his land)— 3  הַמַּסּוֹת֙ (the trials) הַגְּדֹלֹ֔ת (great) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) רָא֖וּ (have seen) עֵינֶ֑יךָ (your eyes), הָאֹתֹ֧ת (the signs) וְהַמֹּפְתִ֛ים (and the wonders) הַגְּדֹלִ֖ים (great) הָהֵֽם׃ (those). 4  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) נָתַן֩ (has given) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) לָכֶ֥ם (to you⁺) לֵב֙ (a heart) לָדַ֔עַת (to perceive) וְעֵינַ֥יִם (and eyes) לִרְא֖וֹת (to see) וְאָזְנַ֣יִם (and ears) לִשְׁמֹ֑עַ (to hear), עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

5  וָאוֹלֵ֥ךְ (And I have led) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness);

לֹֽא־ (not) בָל֤וּ (have worn out) שַׂלְמֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ garments) מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (from you⁺), וְנַֽעַלְךָ֥ (and your sandals) לֹֽא־ (not) בָלְתָ֖ה (have worn out) מֵעַ֥ל (on) רַגְלֶֽךָ׃ (your feet).

6  לֶ֚חֶם (Bread) לֹ֣א (not) אֲכַלְתֶּ֔ם (you⁺ have eaten), וְיַ֥יִן (or wine), וְשֵׁכָ֖ר (and strong drink) לֹ֣א (not) שְׁתִיתֶ֑ם (have you⁺ drunk),

לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so that) תֵּֽדְע֔וּ (you⁺ may know) כִּ֛י (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

7  וַתָּבֹ֖אוּ (And you⁺ came) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וַיֵּצֵ֣א (and came out) סִיחֹ֣ן (Sihon) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) חֶ֠שְׁבּוֹן (of Heshbon) וְע֨וֹג (and Og) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הַבָּשָׁ֧ן (of Bashan) לִקְרָאתֵ֛נוּ (against us) לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to battle), וַנַּכֵּֽם׃ (and we conquered them). 8  וַנִּקַּח֙ (And we took) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָ֔ם (their land) וַנִּתְּנָ֣הּ (and gave it) לְנַחֲלָ֔ה (as an inheritance) לָרֽאוּבֵנִ֖י (to the Reubenite), וְלַגָּדִ֑י (and to the Gadite), וְלַחֲצִ֖י (and to the half) שֵׁ֥בֶט (tribe) הַֽמְנַשִּֽׁי׃ (of the Manassite). 9  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) הַבְּרִ֣ית (of the covenant) הַזֹּ֔את (this) וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם (and do) אֹתָ֑ם (them), לְמַ֣עַן (so that) תַּשְׂכִּ֔ילוּ (you⁺ may prosper) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (in all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תַּעֲשֽׂוּן׃פ (you⁺ do).

10  אַתֶּ֨ם (You⁺) נִצָּבִ֤ים (stand) הַיּוֹם֙ (today) כֻּלְּכֶ֔ם (all of you⁺) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God)— רָאשֵׁיכֶ֣ם (your⁺ leaders) שִׁבְטֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ tribes), זִקְנֵיכֶם֙ (and your⁺ elders), וְשֹׁ֣טְרֵיכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ officers), כֹּ֖ל (all) אִ֥ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel), 11  טַפְּכֶ֣ם (your⁺ little ones), נְשֵׁיכֶ֔ם (and your⁺ wives), וְגֵ֣רְךָ֔ (and the sojourner) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who is) בְּקֶ֣רֶב (in the midst) מַחֲנֶ֑יךָ (of your camp), מֵחֹטֵ֣ב (from the one who cuts) עֵצֶ֔יךָ (your wood) עַ֖ד (to) שֹׁאֵ֥ב (the one who draws) מֵימֶֽיךָ׃ (your water)— 12  לְעָבְרְךָ֗ (that you may enter) בִּבְרִ֛ית (into the covenant) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God), וּבְאָלָת֑וֹ (and into His oath), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) כֹּרֵ֥ת (makes) עִמְּךָ֖ (with you) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today), 13  לְמַ֣עַן (so that) הָקִֽים־ (He may establish) אֹתְךָ֩ (you) הַיּ֨וֹם׀ (today) ל֜וֹ (unto Himself) לְעָ֗ם (as a people), וְה֤וּא (and that He) יִֽהְיֶה־ (may be) לְּךָ֙ (unto you) לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים (God), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּר־ (He has spoken) לָ֑ךְ (to you) וְכַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and as) נִשְׁבַּע֙ (He has sworn) לַאֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ (to your fathers), לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם (to Abraham), לְיִצְחָ֖ק (to Isaac), וּֽלְיַעֲקֹֽב׃ (and to Jacob).

14  וְלֹ֥א (And not) אִתְּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺) לְבַדְּכֶ֑ם (alone) אָנֹכִ֗י (I) כֹּרֵת֙ (am cutting) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּרִ֣ית (the covenant) הַזֹּ֔את (this) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָלָ֖ה (the oath) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this). 15  כִּי֩ (But) אֶת־ (with) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (those) יֶשְׁנ֜וֹ (who are) פֹּ֗ה (here) עִמָּ֙נוּ֙ (with us) עֹמֵ֣ד (standing) הַיּ֔וֹם (today) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God), וְאֵ֨ת (and) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with him who) אֵינֶ֛נּוּ (is not) פֹּ֖ה (here) עִמָּ֥נוּ (with us) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).

16  כִּֽי־ (For) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם (know) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יָשַׁ֖בְנוּ (we dwelt) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt) וְאֵ֧ת (and) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָבַ֛רְנוּ (we passed over) בְּקֶ֥רֶב (in the midst) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עֲבַרְתֶּֽם׃ (you⁺ passed over). 17  וַתִּרְאוּ֙ (And you⁺ saw) אֶת־ (-) שִׁקּ֣וּצֵיהֶ֔ם (their abominations), וְאֵ֖ת (and) גִּלֻּלֵיהֶ֑ם (their idols), עֵ֣ץ (wood) וָאֶ֔בֶן (and stone) כֶּ֥סֶף (and silver) וְזָהָ֖ב (and gold), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that were) עִמָּהֶֽם׃ (among them), 18  פֶּן־ (lest) יֵ֣שׁ (there be) בָּ֠כֶם (among you⁺) אִ֣ישׁ (man) אוֹ־ (or) אִשָּׁ֞ה (woman) א֧וֹ (or) מִשְׁפָּחָ֣ה (family) אוֹ־ (or) שֵׁ֗בֶט (tribe) אֲשֶׁר֩ (whose) לְבָב֨וֹ (heart) פֹנֶ֤ה (turns away) הַיּוֹם֙ (today) מֵעִם֙ (from) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God), לָלֶ֣כֶת (to go) לַעֲבֹ֔ד (and serve) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֖י (the gods) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם (of the nations) הָהֵ֑ם (those), פֶּן־ (lest) יֵ֣שׁ (there be) בָּכֶ֗ם (among you⁺) שֹׁ֛רֶשׁ (a root) פֹּרֶ֥ה (bearing) רֹ֖אשׁ (gall) וְלַעֲנָֽה׃ (and wormwood). 19  וְהָיָ֡ה (And it will come to pass), בְּשָׁמְעוֹ֩ (in his hearing) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֨י (the words) הָֽאָלָ֜ה (of the oath) הַזֹּ֗את (this), וְהִתְבָּרֵ֨ךְ (that he blesses himself) בִּלְבָב֤וֹ (in his heart), לֵאמֹר֙ (saying), שָׁל֣וֹם (Peace) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall have) לִּ֔י (I), כִּ֛י (even though) בִּשְׁרִר֥וּת (in the stubbornness) לִבִּ֖י (of my heart) אֵלֵ֑ךְ (I walk), לְמַ֛עַן (so that) סְפ֥וֹת (are swept away) הָרָוָ֖ה (the wet) אֶת־ (with) הַצְּמֵאָֽה׃ (the dry), 20  לֹא־ (not) יֹאבֶ֣ה (will) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) סְלֹ֣חַֽ (spare) לוֹ֒ (him), כִּ֣י (for) אָ֠ז (then) יֶעְשַׁ֨ן (would burn) אַף־ (the anger) יְהוָ֤ה (of YHWH) וְקִנְאָתוֹ֙ (and His jealousy) בָּאִ֣ישׁ (against the man) הַה֔וּא (that), וְרָ֤בְצָה (and will rest) בּוֹ֙ (upon him) כָּל־ (every) הָ֣אָלָ֔ה (oath) הַכְּתוּבָ֖ה (written) בַּסֵּ֣פֶר (in the book) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וּמָחָ֤ה (and will blot out) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֔וֹ (his name) מִתַּ֖חַת (from under) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (the heavens). 21  וְהִבְדִּיל֤וֹ (And will separate him) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְרָעָ֔ה (for disaster) מִכֹּ֖ל (from all) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), כְּכֹל֙ (according to all) אָל֣וֹת (the oaths) הַבְּרִ֔ית (of the covenant) הַכְּתוּבָ֕ה (written) בְּסֵ֥פֶר (in the Book) הַתּוֹרָ֖ה (of the Law) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

22  וְאָמַ֞ר (And will say) הַדּ֣וֹר (the generation) הָֽאַחֲר֗וֹן (latter) בְּנֵיכֶם֙ (of your⁺ sons) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יָק֙וּמוּ֙ (rise up) מֵאַ֣חֲרֵיכֶ֔ם (after you⁺), וְהַ֨נָּכְרִ֔י (and the foreigner) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יָבֹ֖א (comes) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from a land) רְחוֹקָ֑ה (distant), וְ֠רָאוּ (when they see) אֶת־ (-) מַכּ֞וֹת (the plagues) הָאָ֤רֶץ (of the land) הַהִוא֙ (that) וְאֶת־ (and) תַּ֣חֲלֻאֶ֔יהָ (the sicknesses) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) חִלָּ֥ה (has laid) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בָּֽהּ׃ (on it): 23  גָּפְרִ֣ית (Of sulfur) וָמֶלַח֮ (and salt) שְׂרֵפָ֣ה (burning) כָל־ (is all) אַרְצָהּ֒ (the land); לֹ֤א (not) תִזָּרַע֙ (it is sown), וְלֹ֣א (and not) תַצְמִ֔חַ (does it bear), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יַעֲלֶ֥ה (does grow) בָ֖הּ (there) כָּל־ (any) עֵ֑שֶׂב (grass)— כְּֽמַהְפֵּכַ֞ת (like the overthrow) סְדֹ֤ם (of Sodom) וַעֲמֹרָה֙ (and Gomorrah), אַדְמָ֣ה (Admah) וּצְבֹיִּים (and Zeboiim), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which) הָפַ֣ךְ (overthrew) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) בְּאַפּ֖וֹ (in His anger) וּבַחֲמָתֽוֹ׃ (and His wrath).

24  וְאָֽמְרוּ֙ (And will say), כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations) עַל־ (Why), מֶ֨ה (what) עָשָׂ֧ה (has done) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) כָּ֖כָה (so) לָאָ֣רֶץ (to the land) הַזֹּ֑את (this)? מֶ֥ה (Why) חֳרִ֛י (the heat) הָאַ֥ף (of anger) הַגָּד֖וֹל (great) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this)?

25  וְאָ֣מְר֔וּ (And they will say), עַ֚ל (Upon) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָֽזְב֔וּ (they have forsaken) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִ֥ית (the covenant) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which) כָּרַ֣ת (He made) עִמָּ֔ם (with them) בְּהוֹצִיא֥וֹ (when He brought) אֹתָ֖ם (them) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (out of the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 26  וַיֵּלְכ֗וּ (And for they went) וַיַּֽעַבְדוּ֙ (and served) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other) וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֖וּ (and worshiped) לָהֶ֑ם (them), אֱלֹהִים֙ (gods) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יְדָע֔וּם (they did know), וְלֹ֥א (that not) חָלַ֖ק (He had apportioned) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them). 27  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בָּאָ֣רֶץ (against the land) הַהִ֑וא (that), לְהָבִ֤יא (to bring) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (on it) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) הַקְּלָלָ֔ה (curse) הַכְּתוּבָ֖ה (written) בַּסֵּ֥פֶר (in the book) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 28  וַיִּתְּשֵׁ֤ם (And uprooted them) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מֵעַ֣ל (from) אַדְמָתָ֔ם (their land) בְּאַ֥ף (in anger), וּבְחֵמָ֖ה (and in wrath), וּבְקֶ֣צֶף (and in indignation) גָּד֑וֹל (great), וַיַּשְׁלִכֵ֛ם (and He cast them) אֶל־ (into) אֶ֥רֶץ (land) אַחֶ֖רֶת (another), כַּיּ֥וֹם (as the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

29  הַ֨נִּסְתָּרֹ֔ת (The things hidden) לַיהוָ֖ה (are of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God), וְהַנִּגְלֹ֞ת (and the things revealed) לָ֤ׄנׄוּׄ (are to us) וּׄלְׄבָׄנֵׄ֙יׄנׄוּׄ֙ (and to our sons) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֔ם (forever), לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת (that we may do) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֖י (the words) הַתּוֹרָ֥ה (of the law) הַזֹּֽאת׃ס (this).
