The Day the Sun Stood Still

1  וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass), כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ (when heard) אֲדֹֽנִי־ (Adoni-) צֶ֜דֶק (zedek) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem) כִּֽי־ (how) לָכַ֨ד (had taken) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) הָעַי֮ (Ai) וַיַּחֲרִימָהּ֒ (and devoted it to destruction) כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) עָשָׂ֤ה (he had done) לִֽירִיחוֹ֙ (to Jericho) וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ (and its king), כֵּן־ (so) עָשָׂ֥ה (he had done) לָעַ֖י (to Ai) וּלְמַלְכָּ֑הּ (and its king)) וְכִ֨י (and how) הִשְׁלִ֜ימוּ (had made peace) יֹשְׁבֵ֤י (the dwellers) גִבְעוֹן֙ (of Gibeon) אֶת־ (with) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ (and were) בְּקִרְבָּֽם׃ (among them). 2  וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ (That they feared) מְאֹ֔ד (greatly) כִּ֣י (because) עִ֤יר (a city) גְּדוֹלָה֙ (great) גִּבְע֔וֹן (Gibeon was), כְּאַחַ֖ת (like one) עָרֵ֣י (of cities) הַמַּמְלָכָ֑ה (the royal), וְכִ֨י (and because) הִ֤יא (it was) גְדוֹלָה֙ (greater) מִן־ (than) הָעַ֔י (Ai), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲנָשֶׁ֖יהָ (its men were) גִּבֹּרִֽים׃ (mighty).

3  וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח (Therefore sent) אֲדֹנִי־ (Adoni-) צֶ֜דֶק (zedek) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem) אֶל־ (to) הוֹהָ֣ם (Hoham) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) חֶ֠בְרוֹן (of Hebron), וְאֶל־ (and to) פִּרְאָ֨ם (Piram) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יַרְמ֜וּת (of Jarmuth), וְאֶל־ (and to) יָפִ֧יעַ (Japhia) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) לָכִ֛ישׁ (of Lachish), וְאֶל־ (and to) דְּבִ֥יר (Debir) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) עֶגְל֖וֹן (of Eglon), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 4  עֲלֽוּ־ (Come up) אֵלַ֣י (to me) וְעִזְרֻ֔נִי (and help me), וְנַכֶּ֖ה (that we may attack) אֶת־ (-) גִּבְע֑וֹן (Gibeon). כִּֽי־ (For) הִשְׁלִ֥ימָה (it has made peace) אֶת־ (with) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) וְאֶת־ (and with) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

5  וַיֵּאָסְפ֨וּ (And gathered together) וַֽיַּעֲל֜וּ (and went up) חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת׀ (five) מַלְכֵ֣י (kings) הָאֱמֹרִ֗י (of the Amorite)— מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (of Jerusalem), מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) חֶבְר֤וֹן (of Hebron), מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יַרְמוּת֙ (of Jarmuth), מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) לָכִ֣ישׁ (of Lachish), מֶֽלֶךְ־ (and the king) עֶגְל֔וֹן (of Eglon)— הֵ֖ם (they) וְכָל־ (and all) מַֽחֲנֵיהֶ֑ם (their armies), וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ (and they camped) עַל־ (before) גִּבְע֔וֹן (Gibeon) וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ (and made war) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (against it).

6  וַיִּשְׁלְח֣וּ (And sent) אַנְשֵׁי֩ (the men) גִבְע֨וֹן (of Gibeon) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (at) הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ (the camp) הַגִּלְגָּ֣לָה (at Gilgal), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), אַל־ (Not) תֶּ֥רֶף (do forsake) יָדֶ֖יךָ (-) מֵֽעֲבָדֶ֑יךָ (your servants). עֲלֵ֧ה (Come up) אֵלֵ֣ינוּ (to us) מְהֵרָ֗ה (quickly), וְהוֹשִׁ֤יעָה (and save) לָּ֙נוּ֙ (us) וְעָזְרֵ֔נוּ (and help us), כִּ֚י (for) נִקְבְּצ֣וּ (have gathered together) אֵלֵ֔ינוּ (against us) כָּל־ (all) מַלְכֵ֥י (the kings) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (who dwell) הָהָֽר׃ (in the hill country).

7  וַיַּ֨עַל (And went up) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) מִן־ (from) הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל (Gilgal), ה֚וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) עַ֤ם (the people) הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (of war) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him), וְכֹ֖ל (and all) גִּבּוֹרֵ֥י (the mighty men) הֶחָֽיִל׃פ (of valor).

8  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua), אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֣א (do fear) מֵהֶ֔ם (them), כִּ֥י (for) בְיָדְךָ֖ (into your hand) נְתַתִּ֑ים (I have given them). לֹֽא־ (Not) יַעֲמֹ֥ד (shall stand) אִ֛ישׁ (a man) מֵהֶ֖ם (of them) בְּפָנֶֽיךָ׃ (before you).

9  וַיָּבֹ֧א (And came) אֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (upon them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) פִּתְאֹ֑ם (suddenly), כָּל־ (all) הַלַּ֕יְלָה (the night) עָלָ֖ה (having gone up) מִן־ (from) הַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ (Gilgal). 10  וַיְהֻמֵּ֤ם (And routed them) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וַיַּכֵּ֥ם (and he struck them) מַכָּֽה־ (with a slaughter) גְדוֹלָ֖ה (great) בְּגִבְע֑וֹן (at Gibeon), וַֽיִּרְדְּפֵ֗ם (and he pursued them) דֶּ֚רֶךְ (along the road) מַעֲלֵ֣ה (of the ascent) בֵית־ (of Beth-) חוֹרֹ֔ן (horon), וַיַּכֵּ֥ם (and he struck them) עַד־ (as far as) עֲזֵקָ֖ה (Azekah) וְעַד־ (and) מַקֵּדָֽה׃ (Makkedah). 11  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass), בְּנֻסָ֣ם׀ (as they fled) מִפְּנֵ֣י (before) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel), הֵ֞ם (they were) בְּמוֹרַ֤ד (on the descent) בֵּית־ (of Beth-) חוֹרֹן֙ (horon), וַֽיהוָ֡ה (that YHWH) הִשְׁלִ֣יךְ (cast down) עֲלֵיהֶם֩ (on them) אֲבָנִ֨ים (hailstones) גְּדֹל֧וֹת (large) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם (the heavens) עַד־ (as far as) עֲזֵקָ֖ה (Azekah), וַיָּמֻ֑תוּ (and they died) רַבִּ֗ים (There were more) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) מֵ֙תוּ֙ (died) בְּאַבְנֵ֣י (from) הַבָּרָ֔ד (the hailstones) מֵאֲשֶׁ֥ר (than) הָרְג֛וּ (killed) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ס (with the sword).

12  אָ֣ז (Then) יְדַבֵּ֤ר (spoke) יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֙ (Joshua) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH) בְּי֗וֹם (in the day) תֵּ֤ת (when delivered up) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י (the Amorite) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (and he said) לְעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel),

שֶׁ֚מֶשׁ (O Sun) בְּגִבְע֣וֹן (over Gibeon) דּ֔וֹם (stand still),

וְיָרֵ֖חַ (and O and Moon) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) אַיָּלֽוֹן׃ (of Aijalon).

13  וַיִּדֹּ֨ם (And stood still) הַשֶּׁ֜מֶשׁ (the sun),

וְיָרֵ֣חַ (and the moon) עָמָ֗ד (stood),

עַד־ (until) יִקֹּ֥ם (took vengeance) גּוֹי֙ (the nation) אֹֽיְבָ֔יו (upon its enemies).

הֲלֹא־ (Is not) הִ֥יא (it) כְתוּבָ֖ה (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֣פֶר (the Scroll) הַיָּשָׁ֑ר (of the Upright one)?

וַיַּעֲמֹ֤ד (And stood still) הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (the sun)

בַּחֲצִ֣י (in the midst) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens),

וְלֹא־ (and not) אָ֥ץ (did hurry) לָב֖וֹא (to go down)

כְּי֥וֹם (for about a day) תָּמִֽים׃ (whole).

14  וְלֹ֨א (And not) הָיָ֜ה (there has been) כַּיּ֤וֹם (a day) הַהוּא֙ (like it) לְפָנָ֣יו (before it) וְאַחֲרָ֔יו (or after it), לִשְׁמֹ֥עַ (that heeded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּק֣וֹל (the voice) אִ֑ישׁ (of a man); כִּ֣י (for) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) נִלְחָ֖ם (fought) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (for Israel).

15  וַיָּ֤שָׁב (And returned) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל (Israel) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him) אֶל־ (to) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (the camp) הַגִּלְגָּֽלָה׃ (at Gilgal).

The Victory at Makkedah

16  וַיָּנֻ֕סוּ (And had fled) חֲמֵ֖שֶׁת (five) הַמְּלָכִ֣ים (the kings) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these) וַיֵּחָבְא֥וּ (and hidden themselves) בַמְּעָרָ֖ה (in a cave) בְּמַקֵּדָֽה׃ (at Makkedah). 17  וַיֻּגַּ֖ד (And it was told) לִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (to Joshua), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), נִמְצְאוּ֙ (Have been found) חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת (five) הַמְּלָכִ֔ים (the kings) נֶחְבְּאִ֥ים (hidden) בַּמְּעָרָ֖ה (in the cave) בְּמַקֵּדָֽה׃ (at Makkedah).

18  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), גֹּ֛לּוּ (Roll) אֲבָנִ֥ים (stones) גְּדֹל֖וֹת (large) אֶל־ (against) פִּ֣י (the mouth) הַמְּעָרָ֑ה (of the cave), וְהַפְקִ֧ידוּ (and set) עָלֶ֛יהָ (by it) אֲנָשִׁ֖ים (men) לְשָׁמְרָֽם׃ (to guard them). 19  וְאַתֶּם֙ (And you⁺), אַֽל־ (not) תַּעֲמֹ֔דוּ (do stay there), רִדְפוּ֙ (pursue) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) אֹֽיְבֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ enemies) וְזִנַּבְתֶּ֖ם (and attack the rear) אוֹתָ֑ם (of them). אַֽל־ (Not) תִּתְּנ֗וּם (do allow them) לָבוֹא֙ (to enter) אֶל־ (into) עָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם (their cities), כִּ֧י (for) נְתָנָ֛ם (has delivered them) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) בְּיֶדְכֶֽם׃ (into your⁺ hands).

20  וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass), כְּכַלּ֨וֹת (made an end) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (that Joshua) וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) לְהַכּוֹתָ֛ם (of striking them) מַכָּ֥ה (with a slaughter) גְדוֹלָֽה־ (great) מְאֹ֖ד (very) עַד־ (until) תֻּמָּ֑ם (they had finished), וְהַשְּׂרִידִים֙ (and the remnant) שָׂרְד֣וּ (escaped) מֵהֶ֔ם (of them) וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and entered) אֶל־ (into) עָרֵ֥י (cities) הַמִּבְצָֽר׃ (the fortified). 21  וַיָּשֻׁבוּ֩ (And returned) כָל־ (all) הָעָ֨ם (the people) אֶל־ (to) הַמַּחֲנֶ֧ה (the camp) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua) מַקֵּדָ֖ה (at Makkedah) בְּשָׁל֑וֹם (in peace). לֹֽא־ (None) חָרַ֞ץ (sharpened) לִבְנֵ֧י (against the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) לְאִ֖ישׁ (a man) אֶת־ (-) לְשֹׁנֽוֹ׃ (his tongue).

22  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua), פִּתְח֖וּ (Open) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֣י (the mouth) הַמְּעָרָ֑ה (of the cave), וְהוֹצִ֣יאוּ (and bring out) אֵלַ֗י (to me) אֶת־ (-) חֲמֵ֛שֶׁת (five) הַמְּלָכִ֥ים (kings) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) מִן־ (from) הַמְּעָרָֽה׃ (the cave). 23  וַיַּ֣עֲשׂוּ (And they did) כֵ֔ן (so), וַיֹּצִ֣יאוּ (and they brought out) אֵלָ֗יו (to him) אֶת־ (-) חֲמֵ֛שֶׁת (five) הַמְּלָכִ֥ים (kings) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) מִן־ (from) הַמְּעָרָ֑ה (the cave)— אֵ֣ת׀ (-) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem), אֶת־ (-) מֶ֤לֶךְ (the king) חֶבְרוֹן֙ (of Hebron), אֶת־ (-) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יַרְמ֔וּת (of Jarmuth), אֶת־ (-) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) לָכִ֖ישׁ (of Lachish), אֶת־ (-) מֶ֥לֶךְ (and the king) עֶגְלֽוֹן׃ (of Eglon).

24  וַ֠יְהִי (And it was), כְּֽהוֹצִיאָ֞ם (when they brought out) אֶת־ (-) הַמְּלָכִ֣ים (the kings) הָאֵלֶּה֮ (these) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֒ (Joshua), וַיִּקְרָ֨א (that called) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (for) כָּל־ (all) אִ֣ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), וַ֠יֹּאמֶר (and he said) אֶל־ (to) קְצִינֵ֞י (the captains) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (of the men) הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (of war) הֶהָלְכ֣וּא (who went) אִתּ֔וֹ (with him), קִרְב֗וּ (Come near), שִׂ֚ימוּ (put) אֶת־ (-) רַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ feet) עַֽל־ (on) צַוְּארֵ֖י (the necks) הַמְּלָכִ֣ים (of the kings) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these).

וַֽיִּקְרְב֔וּ (And they drew near) וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ (and put) אֶת־ (-) רַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם (their feet) עַל־ (on) צַוְּארֵיהֶֽם׃ (their necks).

25  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua) אַל־ (Not) תִּֽירְא֖וּ (do be afraid), וְאַל־ (and not) תֵּחָ֑תּוּ (be dismayed). חִזְק֣וּ (Be strong) וְאִמְצ֔וּ (and be of good courage), כִּ֣י (for) כָ֗כָה (thus) יַעֲשֶׂ֤ה (will do) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְכָל־ (to all) אֹ֣יְבֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ enemies) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (against whom) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) נִלְחָמִ֥ים (are fighting) אוֹתָֽם׃ (-).

26  וַיַּכֵּ֨ם (And struck them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ (Joshua) אַֽחֲרֵי־ (after) כֵן֙ (this) וַיְמִיתֵ֔ם (and killed them), וַיִּתְלֵ֕ם (and he hanged them) עַ֖ל (on) חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה (five) עֵצִ֑ים (trees), וַיִּֽהְי֛וּ (and they were) תְּלוּיִ֥ם (hanging) עַל־ (on) הָעֵצִ֖ים (the trees) עַד־ (until) הָעָֽרֶב׃ (the evening). 27  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass) לְעֵ֣ת׀ (at the time) בּ֣וֹא (of the going down) הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ (of the sun), צִוָּ֤ה (that commanded) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua), וַיֹּֽרִידוּם֙ (and they took them down) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הָעֵצִ֔ים (the trees) וַיַּ֨שְׁלִכֻ֔ם (and cast them) אֶל־ (into) הַמְּעָרָ֖ה (the cave) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) נֶחְבְּאוּ־ (they had been hidden) שָׁ֑ם (there), וַיָּשִׂ֜מוּ (and they put) אֲבָנִ֤ים (stones) גְּדֹלוֹת֙ (large) עַל־ (against) פִּ֣י (mouth) הַמְּעָרָ֔ה (of the cave), עַד־ (until) עֶ֖צֶם (very) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃פ (this).

28  וְאֶת־ (And) מַקֵּדָה֩ (Makkedah) לָכַ֨ד (took) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on day) הַה֗וּא (that), וַיַּכֶּ֣הָ (and he struck it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶרֶב֮ (of the sword), וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכָּהּ֒ (its king). הֶחֱרִ֣ם (He devoted to destruction) אוֹתָ֗ם (them) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֙פֶשׁ֙ (person) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) בָּ֔הּ (in it); לֹ֥א (none) הִשְׁאִ֖יר (he let) שָׂרִ֑יד (remain). וַיַּ֙עַשׂ֙ (And He did) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (to the king) מַקֵּדָ֔ה (of Makkedah) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) עָשָׂ֖ה (He had done) לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to the king) יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ (of Jericho).

Conquest of the Southern Cities

29  וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר (And passed over) יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ (Joshua) וְכָֽל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) עִמּ֛וֹ (with him) מִמַּקֵּדָ֖ה (from Makkedah) לִבְנָ֑ה (to Libnah), וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם (and they fought) עִם־ (against) לִבְנָֽה׃ (Libnah). 30  וַיִּתֵּן֩ (And delivered) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) גַּם־ (also) אוֹתָ֜הּ (it) בְּיַ֣ד (into the hand) יִשְׂרָאֵ֘ל (of Israel) וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכָּהּ֒ (its king), וַיַּכֶּ֣הָ (and he struck it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֗רֶב (of the sword) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֙פֶשׁ֙ (person) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) בָּ֔הּ (in it); לֹֽא־ (none) הִשְׁאִ֥יר (he let) בָּ֖הּ (in it) שָׂרִ֑יד (remain). וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And he did) לְמַלְכָּ֔הּ (to its king) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) עָשָׂ֖ה (he had done) לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to the king) יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ס (of Jericho).

31  וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר (And passed over) יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ (Joshua) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) עִמּ֛וֹ (with him) מִלִּבְנָ֖ה (from Libnah) לָכִ֑ישָׁה (to Lachish), וַיִּ֣חַן (and they encamped) עָלֶ֔יהָ (against it) וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם (and fought) בָּֽהּ׃ (against it). 32  וַיִּתֵּן֩ (And delivered) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) לָכִ֜ישׁ (Lachish) בְּיַ֣ד (into the hand) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), וַֽיִּלְכְּדָהּ֙ (and he took it) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (second) וַיַּכֶּ֣הָ (and struck it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֔רֶב (of the sword), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ (soul) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) בָּ֑הּ (in it), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he had done) לְלִבְנָֽה׃פ (to Libnah).

33  אָ֣ז (Then) עָלָ֗ה (came up) הֹרָם֙ (Horam) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) גֶּ֔זֶר (of Gezer) לַעְזֹ֖ר (to help) אֶת־ (-) לָכִ֑ישׁ (Lachish), וַיַּכֵּ֤הוּ (and struck him) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua) וְאֶת־ (and) עַמּ֔וֹ (his people), עַד־ (until) בִּלְתִּ֥י (not) הִשְׁאִֽיר־ (he had left) ל֖וֹ (to him) שָׂרִֽיד׃ (a remnant).

34  וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר (And passed over) יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ (Joshua) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) עִמּ֛וֹ (with him) מִלָּכִ֖ישׁ (from Lachish) עֶגְלֹ֑נָה (to Eglon), וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ (and they encamped) עָלֶ֔יהָ (against it) וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ (and fought) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (against it). 35  וַֽיִּלְכְּד֜וּהָ (And they took it) בַּיּ֤וֹם (on day) הַהוּא֙ (that) וַיַּכּ֣וּהָ (and struck it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֔רֶב (of the sword). וְאֵת֙ (And) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֣פֶשׁ (person) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) בָּ֔הּ (in it) בַּיּ֥וֹם (day) הַה֖וּא (that) הֶחֱרִ֑ים (he devoted to destruction), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he had done) לְלָכִֽישׁ׃פ (to Lachish).

36  וַיַּ֣עַל (And went up) יְ֠הוֹשֻׁעַ (Joshua) וְכָֽל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) עִמּ֛וֹ (with him) מֵעֶגְל֖וֹנָה (from Eglon) חֶבְר֑וֹנָה (to Hebron), וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ (and they fought) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (against it). 37  וַיִּלְכְּד֣וּהָ (And they took it) וַיַּכּֽוּהָ־ (and struck it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֠רֶב (of the sword), וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכָּ֨הּ (its king) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) עָרֶ֜יהָ (its cities) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֤פֶשׁ (person) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) בָּהּ֙ (in it). לֹֽא־ (None) הִשְׁאִ֣יר (he left) שָׂרִ֔יד (remaining), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he had done) לְעֶגְל֑וֹן (to Eglon). וַיַּחֲרֵ֣ם (And he devoted to destruction) אוֹתָ֔הּ (it) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ (person) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּֽהּ׃ס (was in it).

38  וַיָּ֧שָׁב (And returned) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him) דְּבִ֑רָה (to Debir), וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם (and they fought) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (against it). 39  וַֽיִּלְכְּדָ֞הּ (And he took it) וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכָּ֤הּ (its king) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) עָרֶ֙יהָ֙ (its cities) וַיַּכּ֣וּם (and they struck them) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֔רֶב (of the sword), וַֽיַּחֲרִ֙ימוּ֙ (and they devoted to destruction) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (person) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) בָּ֔הּ (in it); לֹ֥א (none) הִשְׁאִ֖יר (he left) שָׂרִ֑יד (remaining). כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (As) עָשָׂ֜ה (he had done) לְחֶבְר֗וֹן (to Hebron), כֵּן־ (so) עָשָׂ֤ה (he did) לִדְבִ֙רָה֙ (to Debir) וּלְמַלְכָּ֔הּ (and its king), וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and as) עָשָׂ֛ה (he had done) לְלִבְנָ֖ה (to Libnah) וּלְמַלְכָּֽהּ׃ (and its king).

40  וַיַּכֶּ֣ה (And conquered) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֡רֶץ (the land) הָהָר֩ (of the hill country), וְהַנֶּ֨גֶב (and the Negev), וְהַשְּׁפֵלָ֜ה (and the Shephelah), וְהָאֲשֵׁד֗וֹת (and the slopes), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) מַלְכֵיהֶ֔ם (their kings). לֹ֥א (None) הִשְׁאִ֖יר (he left) שָׂרִ֑יד (remaining), וְאֵ֤ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הַנְּשָׁמָה֙ (that breathed) הֶחֱרִ֔ים (he devoted to destruction), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) צִוָּ֔ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 41  וַיַּכֵּ֧ם (And conquered them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua) מִקָּדֵ֥שׁ (from Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵ֖עַ (barnea) וְעַד־ (and as far as) עַזָּ֑ה (Gaza), וְאֵ֛ת (and) כָּל־ (all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the country) גֹּ֖שֶׁן (of Goshen), וְעַד־ (and as far as) גִּבְעֽוֹן׃ (Gibeon).

42  וְאֵ֨ת (And) כָּל־ (all) הַמְּלָכִ֤ים (the kings) הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) וְאֶת־ (and) אַרְצָ֔ם (their land) לָכַ֥ד (took) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) פַּ֣עַם (at time) אֶחָ֑ת (one), כִּ֗י (because) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) נִלְחָ֖ם (fought) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (for Israel). 43  וַיָּ֤שָׁב (And returned) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל (Israel) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him) אֶל־ (to) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (the camp) הַגִּלְגָּֽלָה׃פ (at Gilgal).
