It was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a cunning way to arrest Jesus and kill him.1Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
"Not during the festival," they said, "so that there won't be a riot among the people."2"But not during the festival," they said, "or the people may riot."
While he was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured it on his head.3While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
But some were expressing indignation to one another: "Why has this perfume been wasted?4Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume?
For this perfume might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they began to scold her.5It could have been sold for more than a year's wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly.
Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for me.6"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
You always have the poor with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have me.7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
She has done what she could; she has anointed my body in advance for burial.8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."9Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
And when they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him money. So he started looking for a good opportunity to betray him.11They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrifice the Passover lamb, his disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare the Passover so that you may eat it?"12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"
So he sent two of his disciples and told them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.13So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.
Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'14Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'
He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there."15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there."
So the disciples went out, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.16The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
When evening came, he arrived with the Twelve.17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me--one who is eating with me."18While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me--one who is eating with me."
They began to be distressed and to say to him one by one, "Surely not I?"19They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely you don't mean me?"
He said to them, "It is one of the Twelve--the one who is dipping bread in the bowl with me.20"It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
For the Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born."21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body."22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.23Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.24"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them.
Truly I tell you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."25"Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will fall away, because it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.27"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'
But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
Peter told him, "Even if everyone falls away, I will not."29Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."
"Truly I tell you," Jesus said to him, "today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times."30"Truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "today--yes, tonight--before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times."
But he kept insisting, "If I have to die with you, I will never deny you." And they all said the same thing.31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.
Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he told his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
He said to them, "I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake."34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."
He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.
And he said, "Abba, Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will."36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."
Then he came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn't you stay awake one hour?37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Couldn't you keep watch for one hour?
Stay awake and pray so that you won't enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Once again he went away and prayed, saying the same thing.39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
And again he came and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
Then he came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. See, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
Get up; let's go. See, my betrayer is near."42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
His betrayer had given them a signal. "The one I kiss," he said, "he's the one; arrest him and take him away under guard."44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard."
So when he came, immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him.45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him.
They took hold of him and arrested him.46The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
One of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear.47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me?48"Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."
Then they all deserted him and ran away.50Then everyone deserted him and fled.
Now a certain young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following him. They caught hold of him,51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,
but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.52he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled.53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together.
Peter followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's courtyard. He was sitting with the servants, warming himself by the fire.54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they could not find any.55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
For many were giving false testimony against him, and the testimonies did not agree.56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, stating,57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.'"58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.'"
Yet their testimony did not agree even on this.59Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, "Don't you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?"60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?"
But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"
"I am," said Jesus, "and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."62"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "Why do we still need witnesses?63The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked.
You have heard the blasphemy. What is your decision?" They all condemned him as deserving death.64"You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned him as worthy of death.
Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying, "Prophesy!" The temple servants also took him and slapped him.65Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him.
While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest's maidservants came.66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth."67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said.
But he denied it: "I don't know or understand what you're talking about." Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.68But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway.
When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, "This man is one of them."69When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them."
But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, "You certainly are one of them, since you're also a Galilean."70Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."
Then he started to curse and swear, "I don't know this man you're talking about!"71He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about."
Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.72Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.
