Pharaoh Pursues the Israelites

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהֹוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  דַּבֵּר֮ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel), וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ (that they turn back) וְיַחֲנוּ֙ (and camp) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) פִּ֣י (Pi-) הַחִירֹ֔ת (hahiroth), בֵּ֥ין (between) מִגְדֹּ֖ל (Migdol) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַיָּ֑ם (the sea), לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) בַּ֣עַל (Baal-) צְפֹ֔ן (zephon). נִכְח֥וֹ (Before it) תַחֲנ֖וּ (you⁺ shall camp) עַל־ (by) הַיָּֽם׃ (the sea).

3  וְאָמַ֤ר (And for will say) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) לִבְנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), נְבֻכִ֥ים (Are bewildered) הֵ֖ם (they) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (by the land); סָגַ֥ר (has closed in) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (on them) הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (the wilderness). 4  וְחִזַּקְתִּ֣י (And I will strengthen) אֶת־ (-) לֵב־ (the heart) פַּרְעֹה֮ (of Pharaoh), וְרָדַ֣ף (and he will pursue) אַחֲרֵיהֶם֒ (after them). וְאִכָּבְדָ֤ה (And I will gain honor) בְּפַרְעֹה֙ (over Pharaoh) וּבְכָל־ (and over all) חֵיל֔וֹ (his army), וְיָדְע֥וּ (that shall know) מִצְרַ֖יִם (Egypt) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I) יְהוָ֑ה (am YHWH).

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ (And they did) כֵֽן׃ (so).

5  וַיֻּגַּד֙ (And it was told) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (to the king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) כִּ֥י (that) בָרַ֖ח (had fled) הָעָ֑ם (the people), וַ֠יֵּהָפֵךְ (and was turned) לְבַ֨ב (the heart) פַּרְעֹ֤ה (of Pharaoh) וַעֲבָדָיו֙ (and his servants) אֶל־ (against) הָעָ֔ם (the people), וַיֹּֽאמרוּ֙ (and they said), מַה־ (What) זֹּ֣את (is this that) עָשִׂ֔ינוּ (we have done), כִּֽי־ (that) שִׁלַּ֥חְנוּ (we have sent out) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) מֵעָבְדֵֽנוּ׃ (from serving us).

6  וַיֶּאְסֹ֖ר (And he harnessed) אֶת־ (-) רִכְבּ֑וֹ (his chariot), וְאֶת־ (and) עַמּ֖וֹ (his people) לָקַ֥ח (he took) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (with him). 7  וַיִּקַּ֗ח (And he took) שֵׁשׁ־ (six) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) רֶ֙כֶב֙ (chariots) בָּח֔וּר (choice), וְכֹ֖ל (and all) רֶ֣כֶב (the chariots) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וְשָׁלִשִׁ֖ם (and captains) עַל־ (over) כֻּלּֽוֹ׃ (all of them).

8  וַיְחַזֵּ֣ק (And strengthened) יְהֹוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) לֵ֤ב (the heart) פַּרְעֹה֙ (of Pharaoh) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וַיִּרְדֹּ֕ף (and he pursued) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel); וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) יֹצְאִ֖ים (were going out) בְּיָ֥ד (with hand) רָמָֽה׃ (held high). 9  וַיִּרְדְּפ֨וּ (And pursued) מִצְרַ֜יִם (Egypt) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם (after them); וַיַּשִּׂ֤יגוּ (and overtook) אוֹתָם֙ (them) חֹנִ֣ים (camping) עַל־ (by) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea) כָּל־ (all) סוּס֙ (the horses) רֶ֣כֶב (and chariots) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), וּפָרָשָׁ֖יו (and his horsemen), וְחֵיל֑וֹ (and his army), עַל־ (by) פִּי֙ (Pi-) הַֽחִירֹ֔ת (hahiroth), לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face) בַּ֥עַל (of Baal-) צְפֹֽן׃ (zephon).

10  וּפַרְעֹ֖ה (And Pharaoh) הִקְרִ֑יב (drew near), וַיִּשְׂאוּ֩ (and lifted up) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) עֵינֵיהֶ֜ם (their eyes), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), מִצְרַ֣יִם׀ (Egypt) נֹסֵ֣עַ (was journeying) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם (after them), וַיִּֽירְאוּ֙ (and they were afraid) מְאֹ֔ד (very). וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ (And cried out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 11  וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ (And they said) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֒ (Moses), הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י (Because) אֵין־ (not) קְבָרִים֙ (there were graves) בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם (in Egypt), לְקַחְתָּ֖נוּ (have you taken us away) לָמ֣וּת (to die) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness)? מַה־ (What) זֹּאת֙ (is this) עָשִׂ֣יתָ (you have done) לָּ֔נוּ (to us) לְהוֹצִיאָ֖נוּ (to bring us out) מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ (from Egypt). 12  הֲלֹא־ (Is not) זֶ֣ה (this) הַדָּבָ֗ר (the word) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) דִּבַּ֨רְנוּ (we spoke) אֵלֶ֤יךָ (to you) בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (in Egypt), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), חֲדַ֥ל (Alone) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (leave us), וְנַֽעַבְדָ֣ה (and we will serve) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרָ֑יִם (Egypt). כִּ֣י (For) ט֥וֹב (it is better) לָ֙נוּ֙ (for us) עֲבֹ֣ד (to serve) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt) מִמֻּתֵ֖נוּ (than to die) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness).

13  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) הָעָם֮ (the people), אַל־ (Not) תִּירָאוּ֒ (do be afraid). הִֽתְיַצְב֗וּ (Stand still) וּרְאוּ֙ (and see) אֶת־ (-) יְשׁוּעַ֣ת (the salvation) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (He will do) לָכֶ֖ם (for you⁺) הַיּ֑וֹם (today); כִּ֗י (for) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) רְאִיתֶ֤ם (you⁺ see) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (the Egyptians) הַיּ֔וֹם (today), לֹ֥א (no) תֹסִ֛יפוּ (more) לִרְאֹתָ֥ם (you shall see), ע֖וֹד (again) עַד־ (unto) עוֹלָֽם׃ (eternity). 14  יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) יִלָּחֵ֣ם (will fight) לָכֶ֑ם (for you⁺), וְאַתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺) תַּחֲרִישֽׁוּן׃פ (you⁺ shall be silent).

Parting the Red Sea

15  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), מַה־ (Why) תִּצְעַ֖ק (do you cry out) אֵלָ֑י (to Me)? דַּבֵּ֥ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וְיִסָּֽעוּ׃ (and they shall journey on). 16  וְאַתָּ֞ה (And you), הָרֵ֣ם (lift up) אֶֽת־ (-) מַטְּךָ֗ (your staff), וּנְטֵ֧ה (and stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדְךָ֛ (your hand) עַל־ (over) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) וּבְקָעֵ֑הוּ (and divide it). וְיָבֹ֧אוּ (And shall go) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) בַּיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ (on the dry land). 17  וַאֲנִ֗י (And I) הִנְנִ֤י (behold, I) מְחַזֵּק֙ (will strengthen) אֶת־ (-) לֵ֣ב (the heart) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of the Egyptians), וְיָבֹ֖אוּ (and they will come in) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם (after them). וְאִכָּבְדָ֤ה (And I will gain honor) בְּפַרְעֹה֙ (through Pharaoh), וּבְכָל־ (and through all) חֵיל֔וֹ (his army), בְּרִכְבּ֖וֹ (through his chariots), וּבְפָרָשָֽׁיו׃ (and through his horsemen). 18  וְיָדְע֥וּ (And shall know) מִצְרַ֖יִם (the Egyptians) כִּי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I) יְהוָ֑ה (am YHWH), בְּהִכָּבְדִ֣י (when I have gained honor for Myself) בְּפַרְעֹ֔ה (through Pharaoh), בְּרִכְבּ֖וֹ (through his chariots), וּבְפָרָשָֽׁיו׃ (and through his horsemen).

19  וַיִּסַּ֞ע (And moved) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God), הַהֹלֵךְ֙ (who was going) לִפְנֵי֙ (before the face of) מַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (and went) מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם (behind them), וַיִּסַּ֞ע (and moved) עַמּ֤וּד (the pillar) הֶֽעָנָן֙ (of cloud) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (from before their face) וַיַּֽעֲמֹ֖ד (and stood) מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃ (behind them). 20  וַיָּבֹ֞א (And it came) בֵּ֣ין׀ (between) מַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) מִצְרַ֗יִם (of Egypt) וּבֵין֙ (and between) מַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel); וַיְהִ֤י (and it was) הֶֽעָנָן֙ (the cloud) וְהַחֹ֔שֶׁךְ (and the darkness), וַיָּ֖אֶר (and it gave light) אֶת־ (-) הַלָּ֑יְלָה (by the night). וְלֹא־ (And not) קָרַ֥ב (did it come near) זֶ֛ה (this one) אֶל־ (to) זֶ֖ה (the other) כָּל־ (all) הַלָּֽיְלָה׃ (the night).

21  וַיֵּ֨ט (And stretched out) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) יָדוֹ֮ (his hand) עַל־ (over) הַיָּם֒ (the sea), וַיּ֣וֹלֶךְ (and drove back) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַ֠יָּם (the sea) בְּר֨וּחַ (by a wind) קָדִ֤ים (east) עַזָּה֙ (strong) כָּל־ (all) הַלַּ֔יְלָה (the night), וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and He made) אֶת־ (-) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) לֶחָרָבָ֑ה (into the dry land), וַיִּבָּקְע֖וּ (and were divided) הַמָּֽיִם׃ (the waters). 22  וַיָּבֹ֧אוּ (And went) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) בְּת֥וֹךְ (into the midst) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) בַּיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה (on the dry land), וְהַמַּ֤יִם (and the waters) לָהֶם֙ (to them) חֹמָ֔ה (were a wall) מִֽימִינָ֖ם (from their right) וּמִשְּׂמֹאלָֽם׃ (and from their left).

23  וַיִּרְדְּפ֤וּ (And pursued) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (the Egyptians). וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (And went in) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם (after them) כֹּ֚ל (all) ס֣וּס (the horses) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh), רִכְבּ֖וֹ (his chariots), וּפָרָשָׁ֑יו (and his horsemen) אֶל־ (into) תּ֖וֹךְ (the midst) הַיָּֽם׃ (of the sea), 24  וַֽיְהִי֙ (and it came to pass) בְּאַשְׁמֹ֣רֶת (in the watch) הַבֹּ֔קֶר (of the morning), וַיַּשְׁקֵ֤ף (that looked down) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) בְּעַמּ֥וּד (through the pillar) אֵ֖שׁ (of fire) וְעָנָ֑ן (and cloud), וַיָּ֕הָם (and He threw into confusion) אֵ֖ת (-) מַחֲנֵ֥ה (the camp) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 25  וַיָּ֗סַר (And He turned aside) אֵ֚ת (-) אֹפַ֣ן (the wheel) מַרְכְּבֹתָ֔יו (of their chariots), וַֽיְנַהֲגֵ֖הוּ (and made it drive) בִּכְבֵדֻ֑ת (with heaviness). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מִצְרַ֗יִם (Egypt), אָנ֙וּסָה֙ (Let us flee) מִפְּנֵ֣י (from the face) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כִּ֣י (for) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) נִלְחָ֥ם (is fighting) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃פ (against Egypt).

26  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), נְטֵ֥ה (Stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדְךָ֖ (your hand) עַל־ (over) הַיָּ֑ם (the sea), וְיָשֻׁ֤בוּ (and shall return) הַמַּ֙יִם֙ (the waters) עַל־ (upon) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt), עַל־ (on) רִכְבּ֖וֹ (their chariots), וְעַל־ (and on) פָּרָשָֽׁיו׃ (their horsemen). 27  וַיֵּט֩ (And stretched out) מֹשֶׁ֨ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) יָד֜וֹ (his hand) עַל־ (over) הַיָּ֗ם (the sea), וַיָּ֨שָׁב (and returned) הַיָּ֜ם (the sea) לִפְנ֥וֹת (at the turning) בֹּ֙קֶר֙ (of the morning) לְאֵ֣יתָנ֔וֹ (to its strength). וּמִצְרַ֖יִם (And Egypt) נָסִ֣ים (was fleeing) לִקְרָאת֑וֹ (toward it), וַיְנַעֵ֧ר (and shook) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַ֖יִם (Egypt) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הַיָּֽם׃ (of the sea). 28  וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ (And returned) הַמַּ֗יִם (the waters) וַיְכַסּ֤וּ (and covered) אֶת־ (-) הָרֶ֙כֶב֙ (the chariots), וְאֶת־ (and) הַפָּ֣רָשִׁ֔ים (the horsemen), לְכֹל֙ (to all) חֵ֣יל (the army) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh) הַבָּאִ֥ים (that had come in) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם (after them) בַּיָּ֑ם (into the sea). לֹֽא־ (Not) נִשְׁאַ֥ר (remained) בָּהֶ֖ם (of them) עַד־ (so much as) אֶחָֽד׃ (one).

29  וּבְנֵ֧י (And the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) הָלְכ֥וּ (had walked) בַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה (on the dry land) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הַיָּ֑ם (of the sea); וְהַמַּ֤יִם (and the waters) לָהֶם֙ (to them) חֹמָ֔ה (were a wall) מִֽימִינָ֖ם (from their right), וּמִשְּׂמֹאלָֽם (and from their left). 30  וַיּ֨וֹשַׁע (And saved) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on day) הַה֛וּא (that) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) מִיַּ֣ד (out of the hand) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וַיַּ֤רְא (and saw) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַ֔יִם (the Egyptians) מֵ֖ת (dead) עַל־ (on) שְׂפַ֥ת (the edge) הַיָּֽם׃ (of the sea). 31  וַיַּ֨רְא (And saw) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (Israel) אֶת־ (-) הַיָּ֣ד (the hand) הַגְּדֹלָ֗ה (the great) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) עָשָׂ֤ה (had done) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם (against Egypt); וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ (and feared) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיַּֽאֲמִ֙ינוּ֙ (and they believed) בַּֽיהוָ֔ה (in YHWH) וּבְמֹשֶׁ֖ה (and in Moses) עַבְדּֽוֹ׃פ (His servant).
