The Song at the Sea
(Judges 5:1–31)

1  אָ֣ז (Then) יָשִֽׁיר־ (sang) מֹשֶׁה֩ (Moses) וּבְנֵ֨י (and the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) הַשִּׁירָ֤ה (the song) הַזֹּאת֙ (this) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and they spoke), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

אָשִׁ֤ירָה (I will sing) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH),

כִּֽי־ (for) גָאֹ֣ה (triumphing) גָּאָ֔ה (He has triumphed);

ס֥וּס (the horse) וְרֹכְב֖וֹ (and its rider)

רָמָ֥ה (He has thrown) בַיָּֽם׃ (into the sea).

2  עָזִּ֤י (Is my strength) וְזִמְרָת֙ (and song) יָ֔הּ (YAH),

וַֽיְהִי־ (and He has become) לִ֖י (my) לִֽישׁוּעָ֑ה (salvation).

זֶ֤ה (This) אֵלִי֙ (is my God), וְאַנְוֵ֔הוּ (and I will praise Him),

אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) אָבִ֖י (of My father), וַאֲרֹמְמֶֽנְהוּ׃ (and I will exalt Him).

3  יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אִ֣ישׁ (is a man) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (of war);

יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ (is His name).

4  מַרְכְּבֹ֥ת (The chariots) פַּרְעֹ֛ה (of Pharaoh) וְחֵיל֖וֹ (and his army)

יָרָ֣ה (He has cast) בַיָּ֑ם (into the sea);

וּמִבְחַ֥ר (and the choice) שָֽׁלִשָׁ֖יו (of his captains)

טֻבְּע֥וּ (are sunk) בְיַם־ (in the Sea) סֽוּף׃ (Red).

5  תְּהֹמֹ֖ת (The depths) יְכַסְיֻ֑מוּ (cover them);

יָרְד֥וּ (they went down) בִמְצוֹלֹ֖ת (into the depths) כְּמוֹ־ (like) אָֽבֶן׃ (a stone).

6  יְמִֽינְךָ֣ (Your right hand), יְהוָ֔ה (O YHWH),

נֶאְדָּרִ֖י (is glorious) בַּכֹּ֑חַ (in power).

יְמִֽינְךָ֥ (Your right hand), יְהוָ֖ה (O YHWH),

תִּרְעַ֥ץ (shatters) אוֹיֵֽב׃ (the enemy).

7  וּבְרֹ֥ב (And in the greatness) גְּאוֹנְךָ֖ (of Your excellence)

תַּהֲרֹ֣ס (You overthrow) קָמֶ֑יךָ (those rising against You).

תְּשַׁלַּח֙ (You send forth) חֲרֹ֣נְךָ֔ (Your burning anger);

יֹאכְלֵ֖מוֹ (it consumes them) כַּקַּֽשׁ׃ (like stubble).

8  וּבְר֤וּחַ (And by the breath) אַפֶּ֙יךָ֙ (of Your nostrils)

נֶ֣עֶרְמוּ (were gathered together) מַ֔יִם (the waters);

נִצְּב֥וּ (stood upright) כְמוֹ־ (like) נֵ֖ד (a heap) נֹזְלִ֑ים (the flowing waters);

קָֽפְא֥וּ (congealed) תְהֹמֹ֖ת (the depths) בְּלֶב־ (in the heart) יָֽם׃ (of the sea).

9  אָמַ֥ר (Said) אוֹיֵ֛ב (the enemy),

אֶרְדֹּ֥ף (I will pursue), אַשִּׂ֖יג (I will overtake),

אֲחַלֵּ֣ק (I will divide) שָׁלָ֑ל (the spoil);

תִּמְלָאֵ֣מוֹ (shall be filled with them) נַפְשִׁ֔י (is my soul).

אָרִ֣יק (I will draw) חַרְבִּ֔י (my sword);

תּוֹרִישֵׁ֖מוֹ (shall destroy them) יָדִֽי׃ (my hand).

10  נָשַׁ֥פְתָּ (You blew) בְרוּחֲךָ֖ (with Your breath);

כִּסָּ֣מוֹ (covered them) יָ֑ם (the sea);

צָֽלֲלוּ֙ (they sank) כַּֽעוֹפֶ֔רֶת (like lead)

בְּמַ֖יִם (in waters) אַדִּירִֽים׃ (mighty).

11  מִֽי־ (Who) כָמֹ֤כָה (is like You) בָּֽאֵלִם֙ (among the gods), יְהוָ֔ה (O YHWH)?

מִ֥י (Who) כָּמֹ֖כָה (is like You), נֶאְדָּ֣ר (majestic) בַּקֹּ֑דֶשׁ (in holiness),

נוֹרָ֥א (fearful) תְהִלֹּ֖ת (in praises),

עֹ֥שֵׂה (doing) פֶֽלֶא׃ (wonders)?

12  נָטִ֙יתָ֙ (You stretched out) יְמִ֣ינְךָ֔ (Your right hand);

תִּבְלָעֵ֖מוֹ (swallowed them) אָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).

13  נָחִ֥יתָ (You have led forth) בְחַסְדְּךָ֖ (in Your loving devotion)

עַם־ (the people) ז֣וּ (whom) גָּאָ֑לְתָּ (You have redeemed);

נֵהַ֥לְתָּ (You have guided them) בְעָזְּךָ֖ (in Your strength)

אֶל־ (to) נְוֵ֥ה (Your habitation) קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ (holy).

14  שָֽׁמְע֥וּ (Heard) עַמִּ֖ים (peoples); יִרְגָּז֑וּן (they are troubled).

חִ֣יל (Anguish) אָחַ֔ז (seized) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) פְּלָֽשֶׁת׃ (of Philistia).

15  אָ֤ז (Then) נִבְהֲלוּ֙ (were dismayed) אַלּוּפֵ֣י (the chiefs) אֱד֔וֹם (of Edom); אֵילֵ֣י (the mighty men) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab),

יֹֽאחֲזֵ֖מוֹ (seized them) רָ֑עַד (trembling).

נָמֹ֕גוּ (Melted away) כֹּ֖ל (all) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the dwellers) כְנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan).

16  תִּפֹּ֨ל (Will fall) עֲלֵיהֶ֤ם (on them) אֵימָ֙תָה֙ (fear) וָפַ֔חַד (and dread).

בִּגְדֹ֥ל (By the greatness) זְרוֹעֲךָ֖ (of Your arm)

יִדְּמ֣וּ (they will be as still) כָּאָ֑בֶן (as a stone);

עַד־ (until) יַעֲבֹ֤ר (pass over) עַמְּךָ֙ (Your people) יְהוָ֔ה (O YHWH),

עַֽד־ (until) יַעֲבֹ֖ר (pass over) עַם־ (the people) ז֥וּ (whom) קָנִֽיתָ׃ (You have purchased).

17  תְּבִאֵ֗מוֹ (You will bring them in) וְתִטָּעֵ֙מוֹ֙ (and plant them)

בְּהַ֣ר (in the mountain) נַחֲלָֽתְךָ֔ (of Your inheritance)—

מָכ֧וֹן (the place) לְשִׁבְתְּךָ֛ (for Your own dwelling), פָּעַ֖לְתָּ (which You have made), יְהוָ֑ה (O YHWH),

מִקְּדָ֕שׁ (the sanctuary), אֲדֹנָ֖י (O Lord), כּוֹנְנ֥וּ (that have established) יָדֶֽיךָ׃ (Your hands).

18  יְהוָ֥ה׀ (YHWH) יִמְלֹ֖ךְ (shall reign) לְעֹלָ֥ם (forever) וָעֶֽד׃ (and ever).

19  כִּ֣י (For) בָא֩ (went in) ס֨וּס (the horses) פַּרְעֹ֜ה (of Pharaoh) בְּרִכְבּ֤וֹ (with his chariots) וּבְפָרָשָׁיו֙ (and with his horsemen) בַּיָּ֔ם (into the sea), וַיָּ֧שֶׁב (and brought back) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) עֲלֵהֶ֖ם (upon them) אֶת־ (-) מֵ֣י (the waters) הַיָּ֑ם (of the sea). וּבְנֵ֧י (And the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) הָלְכ֥וּ (walked) בַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה (on the dry land) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הַיָּֽם׃פ (of the sea).

20  וַתִּקַּח֩ (And took) מִרְיָ֨ם (Miriam) הַנְּבִיאָ֜ה (the prophetess), אֲח֧וֹת (the sister) אַהֲרֹ֛ן (of Aaron), אֶת־ (the) הַתֹּ֖ף (the timbrel) בְּיָדָ֑הּ (in her hand), וַתֵּצֶ֤אןָ (and went out) כָֽל־ (all) הַנָּשִׁים֙ (the women) אַחֲרֶ֔יהָ (after her) בְּתֻפִּ֖ים (with timbrels) וּבִמְחֹלֹֽת׃ (and with dances). 21  וַתַּ֥עַן (And answered) לָהֶ֖ם (them) מִרְיָ֑ם (Miriam),

שִׁ֤ירוּ (Sing) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH),

כִּֽי־ (for) גָאֹ֣ה (triumphing) גָּאָ֔ה (He has triumphed);

ס֥וּס (the horse) וְרֹכְב֖וֹ (and its rider)

רָמָ֥ה (He has thrown) בַיָּֽם׃ס (into the sea).

The Waters of Marah

22  וַיַּסַּ֨ע (And brought) מֹשֶׁ֤ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) מִיַּם־ (from the Sea) ס֔וּף (Red), וַיֵּצְא֖וּ (and they went out) אֶל־ (into) מִדְבַּר־ (the Wilderness) שׁ֑וּר (of Shur). וַיֵּלְכ֧וּ (And they went) שְׁלֹֽשֶׁת־ (three) יָמִ֛ים (days) בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר (in the wilderness), וְלֹא־ (and not) מָ֥צְאוּ (found) מָֽיִם׃ (water). 23  וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (And they came) מָרָ֔תָה (to Marah), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָֽכְל֗וּ (they were able) לִשְׁתֹּ֥ת (to drink) מַ֙יִם֙ (the waters) מִמָּרָ֔ה (of Marah), כִּ֥י (for) מָרִ֖ים (bitter) הֵ֑ם (they were). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) קָרָֽא־ (was called) שְׁמָ֖הּ (its name) מָרָֽה׃ (Marah).

24  וַיִּלֹּ֧נוּ (And grumbled) הָעָ֛ם (the people) עַל־ (against) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹ֖ר (saying), מַה־ (What) נִּשְׁתֶּֽה׃ (shall we drink)? 25  וַיִּצְעַ֣ק (And he cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), וַיּוֹרֵ֤הוּ (and showed him) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עֵ֔ץ (a tree), וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ֙ (and he cast it) אֶל־ (into) הַמַּ֔יִם (the waters), וַֽיִּמְתְּק֖וּ (and became sweet) הַמָּ֑יִם (the waters).

שָׁ֣ם (There) שָׂ֥ם (He made) ל֛וֹ (for them) חֹ֥ק (a statute) וּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט (and an ordinance), וְשָׁ֥ם (and there) נִסָּֽהוּ׃ (He tested them). 26  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And He said), אִם־ (If) שָׁמ֨וֹעַ (listening) תִּשְׁמַ֜ע (you will listen) לְק֣וֹל׀ (to the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God), וְהַיָּשָׁ֤ר (and what is right) בְּעֵינָיו֙ (in His eyes) תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה (do), וְהַֽאֲזַנְתָּ֙ (and you give ear) לְמִצְוֺתָ֔יו (to His commandments), וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֖ (and keep) כָּל־ (all) חֻקָּ֑יו (His statutes), כָּֽל־ (all) הַמַּֽחֲלָ֞ה (of the diseases) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שַׂ֤מְתִּי (I have brought) בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (on Egypt), לֹא־ (not) אָשִׂ֣ים (I will put) עָלֶ֔יךָ (on you). כִּ֛י (For) אֲנִ֥י (I) יְהוָ֖ה (am YHWH) רֹפְאֶֽךָ׃ס (who heals you).

27  וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ (And they came) אֵילִ֔מָה (to Elim), וְשָׁ֗ם (and there) שְׁתֵּ֥ים (two) עֶשְׂרֵ֛ה (and ten) עֵינֹ֥ת (wells were) מַ֖יִם (of water), וְשִׁבְעִ֣ים (and seventy) תְּמָרִ֑ים (palm trees). וַיַּחֲנוּ־ (And they camped) שָׁ֖ם (there) עַל־ (by) הַמָּֽיִם׃ (the waters).
