1  בַּיּ֣וֹם (On the day) הַה֗וּא (that) נִקְרָ֛א (they read) בְּסֵ֥פֶר (from the Book) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (of Moses) בְּאָזְנֵ֣י (into the ears) הָעָ֑ם (of the people), וְנִמְצָא֙ (and there was found) כָּת֣וּב (written) בּ֔וֹ (in it) אֲ֠שֶׁר (that) לֹא־ (not) יָב֨וֹא (should come) עַמֹּנִ֧י (an Ammonite) וּמֹאָבִ֛י (or Moabite) בִּקְהַ֥ל (into the assembly) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God), עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃ (the age), 2  כִּ֣י (because) לֹ֧א (not) קִדְּמ֛וּ (they had met) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בַּלֶּ֣חֶם (with the bread) וּבַמָּ֑יִם (and with the water), וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֨ר (and they hired) עָלָ֤יו (against them) אֶת־ (-) בִּלְעָם֙ (Balaam) לְקַֽלְל֔וֹ (to curse them) וַיַּהֲפֹ֧ךְ (and turned) אֱלֹהֵ֛ינוּ (our God) הַקְּלָלָ֖ה (the curse) לִבְרָכָֽה׃ (into a blessing).

3  וַיְהִ֖י (And it came to pass), כְּשָׁמְעָ֣ם (at their hearing) אֶת־ (-) הַתּוֹרָ֑ה (the Law), וַיַּבְדִּ֥ילוּ (that they separated) כָל־ (all) עֵ֖רֶב (the mixed multitude) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (from Israel).

The Temple Cleansed

4  וְלִפְנֵ֣י (And before) מִזֶּ֔ה (this) אֶלְיָשִׁיב֙ (Eliashib) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), נָת֖וּן (was being put) בְּלִשְׁכַּ֣ת (in the chamber) בֵּית־ (of the house) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (of our God), קָר֖וֹב (he was near) לְטוֹבִיָּֽה׃ (to Tobiah), 5  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (and he had made) ל֜וֹ (for him) לִשְׁכָּ֣ה (a room) גְדוֹלָ֗ה (great), וְשָׁ֣ם (and there) הָי֪וּ (they were) לְפָנִ֟ים (previously) נֹ֠תְנִים (putting) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּנְחָ֨ה (the offerings), הַלְּבוֹנָ֜ה (the frankincense), וְהַכֵּלִ֗ים (and the articles), וּמַעְשַׂ֤ר (and the tithes) הַדָּגָן֙ (of the grain), הַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ (the new wine), וְהַיִּצְהָ֔ר (and the oil)— מִצְוַת֙ (the commandment for) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites) וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִ֖ים (and the singers) וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִ֑ים (and the gatekeepers)— וּתְרוּמַ֖ת (and the contribution for) הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃ (the priests).

6  וּבְכָל־ (And in all) זֶ֕ה (this) לֹ֥א (not) הָיִ֖יתִי (I was) בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem), כִּ֡י (for) בִּשְׁנַת֩ (in the year) שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים (thirty) וּשְׁתַּ֜יִם (and second) לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁ֤סְתְּא (for Artaxerxes) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶל֙ (of Babylon) בָּ֣אתִי (I had come) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), וּלְקֵ֥ץ (and at the end) יָמִ֖ים (of some days) נִשְׁאַ֥לְתִּי (I asked) מִן־ (from) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king), 7  וָאָב֖וֹא (and I came) לִֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (to Jerusalem) וָאָבִ֣ינָה (and understood) בָרָעָ֗ה (about the evil) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֤ה (had done) אֶלְיָשִׁיב֙ (Eliashib) לְט֣וֹבִיָּ֔ה (for Tobiah), לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (in preparing) לוֹ֙ (for him) נִשְׁכָּ֔ה (a room) בְּחַצְרֵ֖י (in the courts) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God).

8  וַיֵּ֥רַֽע (And it was an evil thing) לִ֖י (to me) מְאֹ֑ד (very), וָֽאַשְׁלִ֜יכָה (and I threw) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) כְּלֵ֧י (the goods) בֵית־ (of the house) טוֹבִיָּ֛ה (of Tobiah) הַח֖וּץ (outside) מִן־ (from) הַלִּשְׁכָּֽה׃ (the room). 9  וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה (And I spoke), וַֽיְטַהֲר֖וּ (and they cleansed) הַלְּשָׁכ֑וֹת (the rooms), וָאָשִׁ֣יבָה (and I returned) שָּׁ֗ם (there) כְּלֵי֙ (the articles) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), אֶת־ (with) הַמִּנְחָ֖ה (the offering) וְהַלְּבוֹנָֽה׃פ (and the frankincense).

10  וָאֵ֣דְעָ֔ה (And I knew) כִּֽי־ (that) מְנָי֥וֹת (the portions for) הַלְוִיִּ֖ם (the Levites) לֹ֣א (not) נִתָּ֑נָה (had been given), וַיִּבְרְח֧וּ (and they had fled) אִישׁ־ (each man) לְשָׂדֵ֛הוּ (to his field)— הַלְוִיִּ֥ם (the Levites) וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִ֖ים (and the singers), עֹשֵׂ֥י (doing) הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃ (the work). 11  וָאָרִ֙יבָה֙ (And I contended) אֶת־ (with) הַסְּגָנִ֔ים (the rulers) וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה (and I said), מַדּ֖וּעַ (Why) נֶעֱזַ֣ב (was forsaken) בֵּית־ (the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God)?

וָֽאֶ֨קְבְּצֵ֔ם (And I gathered them) וָֽאַעֲמִדֵ֖ם (and set them) עַל־ (on) עָמְדָֽם׃ (their station). 12  וְכָל־ (And all) יְהוּדָ֗ה (Judah) הֵבִ֜יאוּ (brought) מַעְשַׂ֧ר (the tithe) הַדָּגָ֛ן (of the grain) וְהַתִּיר֥וֹשׁ (and the new wine) וְהַיִּצְהָ֖ר (and the oil) לָאוֹצָרֽוֹת׃ (to the treasuries). 13  וָאוֹצְרָ֣ה (And I appointed treasurers) עַל־ (over) א֠וֹצָרוֹת (the storehouses) שֶׁלֶמְיָ֨ה (Shelemiah) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest), וְצָד֣וֹק (and Zadok) הַסּוֹפֵ֗ר (the scribe), וּפְדָיָה֙ (and Pedaiah) מִן־ (from) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites), וְעַל־ (and at) יָדָ֔ם (their hand was) חָנָ֥ן (Hanan) בֶּן־ (son) זַכּ֖וּר (of Zaccur), בֶּן־ (son) מַתַּנְיָ֑ה (of Mattaniah)— כִּ֤י (for) נֶאֱמָנִים֙ (trustworthy) נֶחְשָׁ֔בוּ (they were considered). וַעֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (And it was upon them) לַחֲלֹ֥ק (to distribute) לַאֲחֵיהֶֽם׃פ (to their brothers).

14  זָכְרָה־ (Remember) לִּ֥י (for me), אֱלֹהַ֖י (O my God), עַל־ (concerning) זֹ֑את (this), וְאַל־ (and do not) תֶּ֣מַח (wipe out) חֲסָדַ֗י (my deeds of loving devotion) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשִׂ֛יתִי (I have done) בְּבֵ֥ית (for the house) אֱלֹהַ֖י (of my God) וּבְמִשְׁמָרָֽיו׃ (and for its keeping).

The Sabbath Restored

15  בַּיָּמִ֣ים (In the days) הָהֵ֡מָּה (those) רָאִ֣יתִי (I saw) בִֽיהוּדָ֣ה׀ (in Judah) דֹּֽרְכִֽים־ (those treading) גִּתּ֣וֹת׀ (winepresses) בַּשַּׁבָּ֡ת (on the Sabbath), וּמְבִיאִ֣ים (and bringing in) הָעֲרֵמ֣וֹת (the heaps of grain), וְֽעֹמְסִ֪ים (and lifting loads) עַל־ (upon) הַחֲמֹרִ֟ים (the donkeys) וְאַף־ (and also) יַ֜יִן (wine) עֲנָבִ֤ים (and grapes) וּתְאֵנִים֙ (and figs) וְכָל־ (and every) מַשָּׂ֔א (load carried) וּמְבִיאִ֥ים (and they were bringing it) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (to Jerusalem) בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת (of the Sabbath). וָאָעִ֕יד (And I protested) בְּי֖וֹם (on the day) מִכְרָ֥ם (of their selling) צָֽיִד׃ (provision). 16  וְהַצֹּרִים֙ (And the Tyrians) יָ֣שְׁבוּ (who dwelt) בָ֔הּ (in it) מְבִיאִ֥ים (were bringing) דָּ֖אג (fish) וְכָל־ (and every) מֶ֑כֶר (of merchandise) וּמֹכְרִ֧ים (and selling) בַּשַּׁבָּ֛ת (on the Sabbath) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah), וּבִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (even in Jerusalem).

17  וָאָרִ֕יבָה (And I contended) אֵ֖ת (with) חֹרֵ֣י (the nobles) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah) וָאֹמְרָ֣ה (and I said) לָהֶ֗ם (to them), מָֽה־ (What is) הַדָּבָ֨ר (the thing) הָרָ֤ע (evil) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) עֹשִׂ֔ים (are doing), וּֽמְחַלְּלִ֖ים (and profaning) אֶת־ (-) י֥וֹם (the day) הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃ (of the Sabbath)? 18  הֲל֨וֹא (Did not) כֹ֤ה (thus) עָשׂוּ֙ (do) אֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ fathers), וַיָּבֵ֨א (and brought) אֱלֹהֵ֜ינוּ (our God) עָלֵ֗ינוּ (upon us) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרָעָ֣ה (the disaster) הַזֹּ֔את (this) וְעַ֖ל (and upon) הָעִ֣יר (the city) הַזֹּ֑את (this)? וְאַתֶּ֞ם (And you⁺) מוֹסִיפִ֤ים (are adding to) חָרוֹן֙ (wrath) עַל־ (upon) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) לְחַלֵּ֖ל (by profaning) אֶת־ (-) הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃פ (the Sabbath)!

19  וַיְהִ֡י (And it came to pass), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (when) צָֽלֲלוּ֩ (were becoming dark) שַׁעֲרֵ֨י (the gates) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (of Jerusalem) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת (the Sabbath), וָאֹֽמְרָה֙ (that I commanded) וַיִּסָּגְר֣וּ (and to be shut) הַדְּלָת֔וֹת (the gates), וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה (and I said) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) לֹ֣א (not) יִפְתָּח֔וּם (shall they open them) עַ֖ד (until) אַחַ֣ר (after) הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת (the Sabbath). וּמִנְּעָרַ֗י (And some from my servants) הֶֽעֱמַ֙דְתִּי֙ (I made stand) עַל־ (at) הַשְּׁעָרִ֔ים (the gates), לֹא־ (that not) יָב֥וֹא (should be brought in) מַשָּׂ֖א (loads carried) בְּי֥וֹם (on the day) הַשַּׁבָּֽת׃ (of the Sabbath).

20  וַיָּלִ֨ינוּ (And they lodged) הָרֹכְלִ֜ים (those who traded) וּמֹכְרֵ֧י (and those who sold) כָל־ (all kinds) מִמְכָּ֛ר (of goods to sell) מִח֥וּץ (outside) לִירוּשָׁלִָ֖ם (of Jerusalem) פַּ֥עַם (once) וּשְׁתָּֽיִם׃ (or twice). 21  וָאָעִ֣ידָה (And I testified) בָהֶ֗ם (against them) וָאֹמְרָ֤ה (and said) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them), מַדּ֜וּעַ (Why) אַתֶּ֤ם (are you⁺) לֵנִים֙ (lodging) נֶ֣גֶד (in front) הַחוֹמָ֔ה (of the wall)? אִם־ (If) תִּשְׁנ֕וּ (you⁺ do this again), יָ֖ד (a hand) אֶשְׁלַ֣ח (I will put forth) בָּכֶ֑ם (on you⁺). מִן־ (From) הָעֵ֣ת (the time) הַהִ֔יא (that) לֹא־ (not) בָ֖אוּ (did they come) בַּשַּׁבָּֽת׃ס (on the Sabbath). 22  וָאֹמְרָ֣ה (And I said) לַלְוִיִּ֗ם (to the Levites) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִֽהְי֤וּ (they should be) מִֽטַּהֲרִים֙ (cleansing themselves), וּבָאִים֙ (and coming in) שֹׁמְרִ֣ים (guarding) הַשְּׁעָרִ֔ים (the gates) לְקַדֵּ֖שׁ (to sanctify) אֶת־ (-) י֣וֹם (the day) הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת (of the Sabbath).

גַּם־ (Also) זֹאת֙ (this) זָכְרָה־ (remember) לִּ֣י (for me), אֱלֹהַ֔י (O my God), וְח֥וּסָה (and have pity) עָלַ֖י (on me) כְּרֹ֥ב (according to the abundance) חַסְדֶּֽךָ׃פ (of your loving devotion).

Intermarriage Forbidden

23  גַּ֣ם׀ (Also) בַּיָּמִ֣ים (in the days) הָהֵ֗ם (those) רָאִ֤יתִי (I saw) אֶת־ (-) הַיְּהוּדִים֙ (the Judeans) הֹשִׁ֗יבוּ (who had settled with) נָשִׁים֙ (women)— אַשְׁדּוֹדִיּוֹת (Ashdodite), עַמּוֹנִיּוֹת (Ammonite), מוֹאֲבִיּֽוֹת׃ (and Moabite). 24  וּבְנֵיהֶ֗ם (And of their sons) חֲצִי֙ (half) מְדַבֵּ֣ר (were speaking) אַשְׁדּוֹדִ֔ית (Ashdodite), וְאֵינָ֥ם (and none of them) מַכִּירִ֖ים (knowing how) לְדַבֵּ֣ר (to speak) יְהוּדִ֑ית (Judean), וְכִלְשׁ֖וֹן (and according to the tongue) עַ֥ם (of people) וָעָֽם׃ (by people). 25  וָאָרִ֤יב (And I contended) עִמָּם֙ (with them) וָאֲקַֽלְלֵ֔ם (and cursed them) וָאַכֶּ֥ה (and struck) מֵהֶ֛ם (some from them) אֲנָשִׁ֖ים (men) וָֽאֶמְרְטֵ֑ם (and pulled out their hair).

וָאַשְׁבִּיעֵ֣ם (And I made them swear) בֵּֽאלֹהִ֗ים (by God), אִם־ (Not) תִּתְּנ֤וּ (shall you⁺ give) בְנֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ daughters) לִבְנֵיהֶ֔ם (to their sons) וְאִם־ (or) תִּשְׂאוּ֙ (take) מִבְּנֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם (from their daughters) לִבְנֵיכֶ֖ם (for your⁺ sons), וְלָכֶֽם׃ (or for yourselves). 26  הֲל֣וֹא (Did not) עַל־ (by) אֵ֣לֶּה (these things) חָטָֽא־ (sin) שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (Solomon) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל (of Israel)? וּבַגּוֹיִ֣ם (And among the nations) הָרַבִּים֩ (many) לֹֽא־ (not) הָיָ֨ה (there was) מֶ֜לֶךְ (a king) כָּמֹ֗הוּ (like him), וְאָה֤וּב (and beloved) לֵֽאלֹהָיו֙ (to his God) הָיָ֔ה (he was), וַיִּתְּנֵ֣הוּ (and gave him) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) מֶ֖לֶךְ (as king) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel); גַּם־ (yet even) אוֹת֣וֹ (him) הֶחֱטִ֔יאוּ (caused to sin) הַנָּשִׁ֖ים (the women) הַנָּכְרִיּֽוֹת׃ (foreign). 27  וְלָכֶ֣ם (And to you⁺) הֲנִשְׁמַ֗ע (shall we listen) לַעֲשֹׂת֙ (to do) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרָעָ֤ה (the evil) הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ (great) הַזֹּ֔את (this) לִמְעֹ֖ל (to transgress) בֵּֽאלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (against our God) לְהֹשִׁ֖יב (by settling with) נָשִׁ֥ים (women) נָכְרִיּֽוֹת׃ (foreign)?

28  וּמִבְּנֵ֨י (And one from the sons) יוֹיָדָ֤ע (of Joiada) בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְיָשִׁיב֙ (of Eliashib) הַכֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest) הַגָּד֔וֹל (great) חָתָ֖ן (was a son-in-law) לְסַנְבַלַּ֣ט (of Sanballat) הַחֹרֹנִ֑י (the Horonite), וָאַבְרִיחֵ֖הוּ (and I caused him to flee) מֵעָלָֽי׃ (from me).

29  זָכְרָ֥ה (Remember) לָהֶ֖ם (them), אֱלֹהָ֑י (O my God), עַ֚ל (on account) גָּאֳלֵ֣י (of the defiling) הַכְּהֻנָּ֔ה (of the priesthood) וּבְרִ֥ית (and the covenant) הַכְּהֻנָּ֖ה (of the priesthood) וְהַלְוִיִּֽם׃ (and the Levites).

30  וְטִֽהַרְתִּ֖ים (And I purified them) מִכָּל־ (from everything) נֵכָ֑ר (foreign), וָאַעֲמִ֧ידָה (and I appointed) מִשְׁמָר֛וֹת (duties) לַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים (for the priests) וְלַלְוִיִּ֖ם (and for the Levites), אִ֥ישׁ (each man) בִּמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃ (in his work), 31  וּלְקֻרְבַּ֧ן (and for offering) הָעֵצִ֛ים (the wood) בְּעִתִּ֥ים (at times) מְזֻמָּנ֖וֹת (appointed), וְלַבִּכּוּרִ֑ים (and for the firstfruits).

זָכְרָה־ (Remember) לִּ֥י (me) אֱלֹהַ֖י (O my God), לְטוֹבָֽה׃ (for good).
