The Priests and Levites Who Returned

1  וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And these are) הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם (and the Levites) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) עָל֛וּ (came up) עִם־ (with) זְרֻבָּבֶ֥ל (Zerubbabel) בֶּן־ (son) שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵ֖ל (of Shealtiel), וְיֵשׁ֑וּעַ (and Jeshua):

שְׂרָיָ֥ה (Seraiah), יִרְמְיָ֖ה (Jeremiah), עֶזְרָֽא׃ (Ezra),

2  אֲמַרְיָ֥ה (Amariah), מַלּ֖וּךְ (Malluch), חַטּֽוּשׁ׃ (Hattush),

3  שְׁכַנְיָ֥ה (Shechaniah), רְחֻ֖ם (Rehum), מְרֵמֹֽת׃ (Meremoth),

4  עִדּ֥וֹא (Iddo), גִנְּת֖וֹי (Ginnethoi), אֲבִיָּֽה׃ (Abijah),

5  מִיָּמִ֥ין (Mijamin), מַֽעַדְיָ֖ה (Maadiah), בִּלְגָּֽה׃ (Bilgah),

6  שְׁמַֽעְיָ֥ה (Shemaiah), וְיוֹיָרִ֖יב (and Joiarib), יְדַֽעְיָֽה׃ (Jedaiah),

7  סַלּ֣וּ (Sallu), עָמ֔וֹק (Amok), חִלְקִיָּ֖ה (Hilkiah), יְדַֽעְיָ֑ה (Jedaiah).

אֵ֣לֶּה (These were) רָאשֵׁ֧י (the heads) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (of the priests) וַאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם (and their brothers) בִּימֵ֥י (in the days) יֵשֽׁוּעַ׃פ (of Jeshua).

8  וְהַלְוִיִּ֗ם (And the Levites were) יֵשׁ֧וּעַ (Jeshua), בִּנּ֛וּי (Binnui), קַדְמִיאֵ֥ל (Kadmiel), שֵׁרֵבְיָ֖ה (Sherebiah), יְהוּדָ֣ה (Judah), מַתַּנְיָ֑ה (and Mattaniah) עַֽל־ (over) הֻיְּד֖וֹת (the songs of praise)— ה֥וּא (he) וְאֶחָֽיו׃ (and his brothers)— 9  וּבַקְבֻּֽקְיָ֨ה (and Bakbukiah) וְעֻנּוֹ (and Unni), אֲחֵיהֶ֛ם (their brothers) לְנֶגְדָּ֖ם (were opposite them) לְמִשְׁמָרֽוֹת׃ (in the services).

10  וְיֵשׁ֖וּעַ (And Jeshua) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יֽוֹיָקִ֑ים (Joiakim),

וְיֽוֹיָקִים֙ (and Joiakim) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) אֶלְיָשִׁ֔יב (Eliashib),

וְאֶלְיָשִׁ֖יב (and Eliashib begat) אֶת־ (-) יוֹיָדָֽע׃ (Joiada),

11  וְיוֹיָדָע֙ (and Joiada) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יוֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan),

וְיוֹנָתָ֖ן (and Jonathan) הוֹלִ֥יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) יַדּֽוּעַ׃ (Jaddua).

12  וּבִימֵי֙ (And in the days) יֽוֹיָקִ֔ים (of Joiakim) הָי֥וּ (were) כֹהֲנִ֖ים (the priests), רָאשֵׁ֣י (the heads) הָאָב֑וֹת (of the fathers):

לִשְׂרָיָ֣ה (For Seraiah), מְרָיָ֔ה (Meraiah);

לְיִרְמְיָ֖ה (for Jeremiah), חֲנַנְיָֽה׃ (Hananiah);

13  לְעֶזְרָ֣א (for Ezra), מְשֻׁלָּ֔ם (Meshullam);

לַאֲמַרְיָ֖ה (for Amariah), יְהוֹחָנָֽן׃ (Jehohanan);

14  לִמְלוּכִי (for Malluchi), יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan);

לִשְׁבַנְיָ֖ה (for Shebaniah), יוֹסֵֽף׃ (Joseph);

15  לְחָרִ֣ם (for Harim), עַדְנָ֔א (Adna);

לִמְרָי֖וֹת (for Meraioth), חֶלְקָֽי׃ (Helkai);

16  לַעֲדָיָא (for Iddo), זְכַרְיָ֖ה (Zechariah);

לְגִנְּת֥וֹן (for Ginnethon), מְשֻׁלָּֽם׃ (Meshullam);

17  לַאֲבִיָּ֖ה (for Abijah), זִכְרִ֑י (Zichri);

לְמִ֨נְיָמִ֔ין (for Minjamin), לְמוֹעַדְיָ֖ה (for Moadiah), פִּלְטָֽי׃ (Piltai);

18  לְבִלְגָּ֣ה (for Bilgah), שַׁמּ֔וּעַ (Shammua);

לִֽשְׁמַעְיָ֖ה (for Shemaiah), יְהוֹנָתָֽן׃ (Jonathan);

19  וּלְיוֹיָרִ֣יב (and for Joiarib), מַתְּנַ֔י (Mattenai);

לִֽידַֽעְיָ֖ה (for Jedaiah), עֻזִּֽי׃ (Uzzi);

20  לְסַלַּ֥י (for Sallai), קַלָּ֖י (Kallai);

לְעָמ֥וֹק (for Amok), עֵֽבֶר׃ (Eber);

21  לְחִלְקִיָּ֣ה (for Hilkiah), חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה (Hashabiah);

לִֽידַֽעְיָ֖ה (for Jedaiah), נְתַנְאֵֽל׃ (Nethanel).

22  הַלְוִיִּם֩ (The Levites) בִּימֵ֨י (in the days) אֶלְיָשִׁ֜יב (of Eliashib), יוֹיָדָ֤ע (Joiada), וְיוֹחָנָן֙ (and Johanan), וְיַדּ֔וּעַ (and Jaddua), כְּתוּבִ֖ים (were recorded) רָאשֵׁ֣י (as heads) אָב֑וֹת (of fathers) וְהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (and priests) עַל־ (during) מַלְכ֖וּת (the reign) דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ (of Darius) הַפָּֽרְסִֽי׃פ (the Persian).

23  בְּנֵ֤י (The sons) לֵוִי֙ (of Levi), רָאשֵׁ֣י (the heads) הָֽאָב֔וֹת (of the fathers), כְּתוּבִ֕ים (were written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֖פֶר (the book) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֑ים (of the Days), וְעַד־ (even until) יְמֵ֖י (the days) יֽוֹחָנָ֥ן (of Johanan) בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְיָשִֽׁיב׃ (of Eliashib). 24  וְרָאשֵׁ֣י (And the heads) הַ֠לְוִיִּם (of the Levites were): חֲשַׁבְיָ֨ה (Hashabiah), שֵֽׁרֵבְיָ֜ה (Sherebiah), וְיֵשׁ֤וּעַ (and Jeshua) בֶּן־ (son) קַדְמִיאֵל֙ (of Kadmiel), וַאֲחֵיהֶ֣ם (and their brothers) לְנֶגְדָּ֔ם (standing in front of them) לְהַלֵּ֣ל (to praise) לְהוֹד֔וֹת (and to give thanks), בְּמִצְוַ֖ת (by the command) דָּוִ֣יד (of David) אִישׁ־ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), מִשְׁמָ֖ר (watch) לְעֻמַּ֥ת (beside) מִשְׁמָֽר׃ (watch).

25  מַתַּנְיָ֧ה (Mattaniah), וּבַקְבֻּֽקְיָ֛ה (and Bakbukiah), עֹבַדְיָ֥ה (Obadiah), מְשֻׁלָּ֖ם (Meshullam), טַלְמ֣וֹן (Talmon), עַקּ֑וּב (and Akkub), שֹׁמְרִ֤ים (keeping) שֽׁוֹעֲרִים֙ (were gatekeepers) מִשְׁמָ֔ר (the watch) בַּאֲסֻפֵּ֖י (at the storehouses) הַשְּׁעָרִֽים׃ (of the gates). 26  אֵ֕לֶּה (These were) בִּימֵ֛י (in the days) יוֹיָקִ֥ים (of Joiakim) בֶּן־ (son) יֵשׁ֖וּעַ (of Jeshua), בֶּן־ (son) יוֹצָדָ֑ק (of Jozadak), וּבִימֵי֙ (and in the days) נְחֶמְיָ֣ה (of Nehemiah) הַפֶּחָ֔ה (the governor), וְעֶזְרָ֥א (and Ezra) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest), הַסּוֹפֵֽר׃פ (and scribe).

The Dedication of the Wall

27  וּבַחֲנֻכַּ֞ת (And at the dedication) חוֹמַ֣ת (of the wall) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem) בִּקְשׁ֤וּ (they sought out) אֶת־ (-) הַלְוִיִּם֙ (the Levites) מִכָּל־ (from all) מְק֣וֹמֹתָ֔ם (their places), לַהֲבִיאָ֖ם (to bring them) לִֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (to Jerusalem) לַעֲשֹׂ֨ת (to make) חֲנֻכָּ֤ה (the dedication) וְשִׂמְחָה֙ (and with gladness), וּבְתוֹד֣וֹת (and with praises), וּבְשִׁ֔יר (and with singing), מְצִלְתַּ֖יִם (with cymbals), נְבָלִ֥ים (harps), וּבְכִנֹּרֽוֹת׃ (and with lyres). 28  וַיֵּאָ֣סְפ֔וּ (And gathered together) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) הַמְשֹׁרְרִ֑ים (of the singers) וּמִן־ (and from) הַכִּכָּר֙ (the circuit) סְבִיב֣וֹת (around) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem), וּמִן־ (and from) חַצְרֵ֖י (the villages) נְטֹפָתִֽי׃ (of the Netophathite); 29  וּמִבֵּית֙ (and from Beth-) הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל (gilgal), וּמִשְּׂד֥וֹת (and from the fields) גֶּ֖בַע (of Geba) וְעַזְמָ֑וֶת (and Azmaveth), כִּ֣י (for) חֲצֵרִ֗ים (villages) בָּנ֤וּ (had built) לָהֶם֙ (for themselves) הַמְשֹׁ֣רֲרִ֔ים (the singers) סְבִיב֖וֹת (around) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem). 30  וַיִּֽטַּהֲר֔וּ (And purified themselves) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּ֑ם (and the Levites), וַֽיְטַהֲרוּ֙ (and they purified) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people), וְאֶת־ (and) הַשְּׁעָרִ֖ים (the gates), וְאֶֽת־ (and) הַחוֹמָֽה׃ (the wall).

31  וָאַעֲלֶה֙ (And I brought up) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵ֣י (the leaders) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) מֵעַ֖ל (upon) לַחוֹמָ֑ה (the wall), וָאַעֲמִ֡ידָה (and I made stand) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) תוֹדֹת֩ (thanksgiving groups) גְּדוֹלֹ֨ת (great), וְתַהֲלֻכֹ֤ת (and one went) לַיָּמִין֙ (to the south) מֵעַ֣ל (upon) לַחוֹמָ֔ה (the wall) לְשַׁ֖עַר (toward the Gate) הָאַשְׁפֹּֽת׃ (of the Dunghill). 32  וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (And went) אַחֲרֵיהֶם֙ (after them) הוֹשַׁ֣עְיָ֔ה (Hoshaiah) וַחֲצִ֖י (and half) שָׂרֵ֥י (of the leaders) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah), 33  וַעֲזַרְיָ֥ה (and Azariah), עֶזְרָ֖א (Ezra), וּמְשֻׁלָּֽם׃ (and Meshullam), 34  יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah), וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן (and Benjamin), וּֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֖ה (and Shemaiah), וְיִרְמְיָֽה׃ס (and Jeremiah), 35  וּמִבְּנֵ֥י (and some from the sons) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (of the priests) בַּחֲצֹצְר֑וֹת (with the trumpets), זְכַרְיָ֨ה (Zechariah) בֶן־ (son) יֽוֹנָתָ֜ן (of Jonathan), בֶּן־ (son) שְׁמַֽעְיָ֗ה (of Shemaiah), בֶּן־ (son) מַתַּנְיָה֙ (of Mattaniah), בֶּן־ (son) מִ֣יכָיָ֔ה (of Micaiah), בֶּן־ (son) זַכּ֖וּר (of Zaccur), בֶּן־ (son) אָסָֽף׃ (of Asaph), 36  וְֽאֶחָ֡יו (and his brothers)— שְֽׁמַעְיָ֡ה (Shemaiah), וַעֲזַרְאֵ֡ל (and Azarel), מִֽלֲלַ֡י (Milalai), גִּֽלֲלַ֡י (Gilalai), מָעַ֞י (Maai), נְתַנְאֵ֤ל (Nethanel), וִֽיהוּדָה֙ (and Judah), חֲנָ֔נִי (Hanani)— בִּכְלֵי־ (with instruments) שִׁ֥יר (of song) דָּוִ֖יד (of David) אִ֣ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וְעֶזְרָ֥א (and Ezra) הַסּוֹפֵ֖ר (the scribe) לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before them). 37  וְעַל֩ (And at) שַׁ֨עַר (the Gate) הָעַ֜יִן (of the Fountain) וְנֶגְדָּ֗ם (and in front of them) עָלוּ֙ (they went up) עַֽל־ (on) מַעֲלוֹת֙ (the stairs) עִ֣יר (of the City) דָּוִ֔יד (of David), בַּֽמַּעֲלֶ֖ה (on the ascent) לַחוֹמָ֑ה (to the wall), מֵעַל֙ (up above) לְבֵ֣ית (the house) דָּוִ֔יד (of David), וְעַ֛ד (and up to) שַׁ֥עַר (the Gate) הַמַּ֖יִם (of the Water) מִזְרָֽח׃ (eastward).

38  וְהַתּוֹדָ֧ה (And the thanksgiving group) הַשֵּׁנִ֛ית (second) הַהוֹלֶ֥כֶת (was proceeding) לְמ֖וֹאל (opposite), וַאֲנִ֣י (and I was) אַחֲרֶ֑יהָ (behind it), וַחֲצִ֨י (and half) הָעָ֜ם (of the people) מֵעַ֣ל (on) לְהַחוֹמָ֗ה (the wall) מֵעַל֙ (above) לְמִגְדַּ֣ל (the Tower) הַתַּנּוּרִ֔ים (of the Ovens) וְעַ֖ד (and up to) הַחוֹמָ֥ה (the Wall) הָרְחָבָֽה׃ (Broad). 39  וּמֵעַ֣ל (And above) לְשַֽׁעַר־ (the Gate) אֶ֠פְרַיִם (of Ephraim), וְעַל־ (and above) שַׁ֨עַר (the Gate) הַיְשָׁנָ֜ה (of Jeshanah) וְעַל־ (and above) שַׁ֣עַר (the Gate) הַדָּגִ֗ים (of Fish) וּמִגְדַּ֤ל (and the Tower) חֲנַנְאֵל֙ (of Hananel), וּמִגְדַּ֣ל (and the Tower) הַמֵּאָ֔ה (of the Hundred), וְעַ֖ד (and up to) שַׁ֣עַר (the Gate) הַצֹּ֑אן (of the Sheep), וְעָ֣מְד֔וּ (and they stood) בְּשַׁ֖עַר (by the Gate) הַמַּטָּרָֽה׃ (of the Guard).

40  וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֛דְנָה (And stood) שְׁתֵּ֥י (the two) הַתּוֹדֹ֖ת (thanksgiving groups) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וַאֲנִ֕י (and I), וַחֲצִ֥י (and half) הַסְּגָנִ֖ים (of the officials) עִמִּֽי׃ (with me), 41  וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֡ים (and the priests)— אֶלְיָקִ֡ים (Eliakim), מַעֲשֵׂיָ֡ה (Maaseiah), מִ֠נְיָמִין (Minjamin), מִיכָיָ֧ה (Micaiah), אֶלְיוֹעֵינַ֛י (Elioenai), זְכַרְיָ֥ה (Zechariah), חֲנַנְיָ֖ה (Hananiah)— בַּחֲצֹצְרֽוֹת׃ (with the trumpets); 42  וּמַעֲשֵׂיָ֨ה (and Maaseiah), וּֽשְׁמַֽעְיָ֜ה (and Shemaiah), וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר (and Eleazar), וְעֻזִּ֛י (and Uzzi), וִֽיהוֹחָנָ֥ן (and Jehohanan), וּמַלְכִּיָּ֖ה (and Malchijah), וְעֵילָ֣ם (and Elam), וָעָ֑זֶר (and Ezer). וַיַּשְׁמִ֙יעוּ֙ (And sang out) הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים (the singers) וְיִֽזְרַחְיָ֖ה (and Jezrahiah) הַפָּקִֽיד׃ (was the overseer).

43  וַיִּזְבְּח֣וּ (And they sacrificed) בַיּוֹם־ (on the day) הַ֠הוּא (that) זְבָחִ֨ים (sacrifices) גְּדוֹלִ֜ים (great), וַיִּשְׂמָ֗חוּ (and they rejoiced), כִּ֤י (for) הָאֱלֹהִים֙ (God) שִׂמְּחָם֙ (had made them rejoice) שִׂמְחָ֣ה (with joy) גְדוֹלָ֔ה (great). וְגַ֧ם (And also) הַנָּשִׁ֛ים (the women) וְהַיְלָדִ֖ים (and the sons) שָׂמֵ֑חוּ (rejoiced), וַתִּשָּׁמַ֛ע (and was heard) שִׂמְחַ֥ת (the joy) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem) מֵרָחֽוֹק׃ (from afar).

Provisions for Temple Worship

44  וַיִּפָּקְד֣וּ (And there were appointed) בַיּוֹם֩ (on the day) הַה֨וּא (that) אֲנָשִׁ֜ים (men) עַל־ (over) הַנְּשָׁכ֗וֹת (the rooms) לָא֨וֹצָר֥וֹת (for the treasures) לַתְּרוּמוֹת֮ (for the contributions), לָרֵאשִׁ֣ית (for the firstfruits), וְלַמַּֽעַשְׂרוֹת֒ (and for the tithes), לִכְנ֨וֹס (to gather) בָּהֶ֜ם (into them) לִשְׂדֵ֤י (from the fields) הֶעָרִים֙ (of the cities) מְנָא֣וֹת (the portions) הַתּוֹרָ֔ה (of the law) לַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (for the priests) וְלַלְוִיִּ֑ם (and for the Levites). כִּ֚י (For) שִׂמְחַ֣ת (rejoiced) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah) עַל־ (over) הַכֹּהֲנִ֥ים (the priests) וְעַל־ (and) הַלְוִיִּ֖ם (the Levites) הָעֹמְדִֽים׃ (who were standing).

45  וַֽיִּשְׁמְר֞וּ (And they kept) מִשְׁמֶ֤רֶת (the service) אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ (of their God) וּמִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת (and the service) הַֽטָּהֳרָ֔ה (of the purification), וְהַמְשֹׁרְרִ֖ים (and the singers) וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִ֑ים (and the gatekeepers) כְּמִצְוַ֥ת (according to the command) דָּוִ֖יד (of David) שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה (and Solomon) בְנֽוֹ׃ (his son). 46  כִּֽי־ (For) בִימֵ֥י (in the days) דָוִ֛יד (of David) וְאָסָ֖ף (and Asaph) מִקֶּ֑דֶם (of old) רֹאשׁ (were heads) הַמְשֹׁ֣רְרִ֔ים (of the singers) וְשִׁיר־ (and songs) תְּהִלָּ֥ה (of praise) וְהֹד֖וֹת (and thanksgiving) לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃ (to God).

47  וְכָל־ (And all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ (Israel) בִּימֵ֨י (in the days) זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל (of Zerubbabel) וּבִימֵ֣י (and in the days) נְחֶמְיָ֗ה (of Nehemiah) נֹֽתְנִ֛ים (were giving) מְנָי֛וֹת (the portions for) הַמְשֹׁרְרִ֥ים (the singers) וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִ֖ים (and the gatekeepers), דְּבַר־ (the matter) י֣וֹם (of a day) בְּיוֹמ֑וֹ (in its day), וּמַקְדִּשִׁים֙ (and they were consecrating) לַלְוִיִּ֔ם (for the Levites), וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם (and the Levites) מַקְדִּשִׁ֖ים (were consecrating) לִבְנֵ֥י (for the sons) אַהֲרֹֽן׃פ (of Aaron).
