Berean Study Bible Deliverance from False ProphetsIsrael’s history included men who claimed divine authority while turning the nation toward idolatry, rebellion, and false security. Balaam sought profit through divination, and the prophets of Baal opposed the worship of the Lord. God repeatedly exposed such leaders because their messages contradicted His revealed word and corrupted the people. Deu 13:1-5 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you… just as there will be false teachers among you. Similar deceivers would arise within the visible Christian community. They would not merely oppose the church from outside but would claim a place among believers while promoting teaching contrary to the apostolic gospel. Act 20:29-30 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come… They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, Their errors would be brought in gradually and presented in ways that could appear acceptable. These teachings would divide believers, weaken obedience to Christ, and lead people away from the truth necessary for salvation and faithful living. Gal 2:4 This issue arose because some false brothers had come in… even denying the Master who bought them— Though they professed to belong to Christ’s people, their teaching and conduct would reject His authority, person, and saving work. Christ’s death establishes His rightful claim over all who bear His name, making their denial especially serious. Jud 1:4 For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—… bringing swift destruction on themselves. Their apparent success would not delay God’s judgment. By rejecting the truth and leading others into error, they would bring certain ruin upon themselves. 1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”… Many will follow in their depravity, False teachers would not remain isolated; many within the church would adopt their immoral conduct and distorted doctrine. Their rebellion against God’s standards would be expressed not only in what they taught but in how they lived, blending Christian language with practices shaped by the surrounding pagan culture. Mat 24:11 and many false prophets will arise and deceive many. and because of them the way of truth will be defamed. The Christian faith would be slandered by outsiders who saw the corruption of those claiming Christ’s name. Such conduct obscured the truth of the gospel, harmed the church’s witness, and gave opponents reason to speak against the faith. Rom 2:24 “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles”… In their greed, “In their greed” reveals that false teachers are driven by selfish desire rather than faithfulness to God, using ministry to gain money, influence, or personal indulgence. Jud 1:11 Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain;… these false teachers These false teachers claim to speak for God while rejecting Christ’s authority and the truth entrusted to the apostles. They threaten the church from within. Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets. They come to you… will exploit you with deceptive words. They use persuasive claims and distorted teaching to take advantage of believers, treating people as a source of profit rather than those entrusted to their care. Rom 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ… The longstanding verdict against them remains in force, God’s judgment against those who knowingly corrupt His truth has already been established. Their apparent success does not cancel their accountability. Jud 1:4 For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—… and their destruction does not sleep. Divine judgment is certain and will come at the appointed time. False teachers will not escape the condemnation they have brought upon themselves. 1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”… For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, Certain angels abandoned the place and order God assigned to them, joining the rebellion that corrupted the world before the flood. Their exalted position did not shield them from divine judgment. Jud 1:6 And the angels who did not stay within their own domain… but cast them deep into hell, God confined them to a place of severe punishment, separating them from freedom and from His favor. Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,… placing them in chains of darkness They remain under restraint, unable to continue their rebellion as before and shut away in darkness. Psa 107:10-14 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,… to be held for judgment; Their present confinement anticipates the final judgment, when God will fully judge every rebellious angel and person. 1Co 6:3 Do you not know that we will judge angels?… if He did not spare the ancient world God judged the pre-flood world after human wickedness had become pervasive and continual. His patience did not cancel His holiness or His right to hold humanity accountable for rebellion. 2Pe 3:6 through which the world of that time perished in the flood. when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, The flood was God’s historical judgment upon a corrupt civilization that had rejected Him. The destruction of that world shows that sin brings real consequences and that God rules over all creation. Gen 7:21-23 And every living thing that moved upon the earth… but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, Noah obeyed God, built the ark, and warned of the coming judgment while living faithfully in an evil generation. God’s preservation of Noah displays His care for those who trust and obey Him. Gen 6:8 Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD. among the eight; Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives entered the ark and survived the flood. Through this small remnant, God preserved the human race and began the post-flood world. 1Pe 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently… if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, God overthrew these cities in the Jordan Valley after their persistent wickedness had reached its full measure. Their sins included sexual immorality, violent abuse, pride, and disregard for the needy. The judgment recorded in Genesis 19 was a real historical act of God against openly defiant sin. Gen 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire… reducing them to ashes Fire and sulfur fell upon the cities, reducing them to ashes and bringing complete devastation. Their ruin demonstrated that God’s judgment was neither symbolic nor partial; the cities that had prospered in rebellion were brought to an end, emphasizing the finality of divine judgment. Ezk 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities and the dishonesty… as an example of what is coming on the ungodly; Sodom and Gomorrah stand as a warning that God will judge those who persist in rejecting His authority. Their destruction foreshadows the final judgment awaiting the ungodly. Jud 1:14-15 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them:… and if He rescued Lot, Lot, Abraham’s nephew, lived in Sodom until God destroyed the city for its extreme wickedness. Angels led Lot, his wife, and his daughters out before the judgment fell. God spared Lot in remembrance of Abraham, showing that He does not sweep away the righteous with the wicked. Gen 19:29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain… a righteous man Lot was not sinless, and some of his decisions brought lasting trouble to his family. Yet God regarded him as righteous because he belonged to Him and did not embrace the evil surrounding him. Gen 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark… distressed by the depraved conduct Living among Sodom’s inhabitants deeply troubled Lot. Their open immorality and violent rejection of God burdened him, even though he remained in the city for many years. Psa 119:53 Rage has taken hold of me because of the wicked… of the lawless Sodom’s people lived in defiant disregard of God’s standards. Their judgment revealed the seriousness of persistent wickedness, while Lot’s rescue demonstrated God’s ability to preserve His own. Gen 18:20-21 Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah… (for that righteous man, Peter identifies Lot, Abraham’s nephew, as righteous before God despite his residence in Sodom. Ezk 14:14 then even if these three men—Noah, Daniel, and Job—… living among them day after day, Lot remained in the city amid its entrenched corruption and its open rejection of God’s order. Gen 14:12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot… was tormented in his righteous soul The evil around him brought genuine inward distress rather than acceptance or approval. Psa 119:136 My eyes shed streams of tears because Your law is not obeyed… by the lawless deeds Sodom’s violence, sexual immorality, and hostility toward God’s messengers displayed the depth of its rebellion. Ezk 16:49-50 Now this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom:… he saw and heard)— Lot’s daily exposure to such wickedness made its presence unavoidable, yet God preserved and ultimately delivered him from the city’s judgment. Gen 19:4-11 Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city… if all this is so, God’s judgment of rebellious angels, the world of Noah’s day, and Sodom and Gomorrah establishes the certainty of His justice. In each case, He judged persistent wickedness while preserving those who trusted and obeyed Him. 1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel… then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials Noah was kept through the flood, and Lot was brought out before Sodom’s destruction. God is fully able to preserve His people in the midst of temptation, suffering, and judgment. Gen 19:29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain… and to hold the unrighteous for punishment Those who reject God and continue in evil may appear to escape consequences for a time, but they remain under His judgment. Their accountability is neither forgotten nor delayed beyond His appointed purpose. 2Th 1:8-9 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance… on the day of judgment. A final day has been set when God will judge every person with perfect righteousness. The godly will be vindicated, and the unrighteous will receive the judgment their deeds deserve. Mat 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable… Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge the corrupt desires of the flesh God’s judgment falls particularly on those who persist in sexual immorality and other sins that arise from a fallen nature in defiance of His will. Their corruption is not merely personal weakness but deliberate rebellion that produces moral ruin. Jud 1:7 In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities… and despise authority. They reject the authority God has established, including His rule and the order He has appointed. Like Korah’s rebellion against Moses and Aaron, such defiance treats God’s authority with contempt. Jud 1:8 Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies,… Bold and self-willed, These false teachers act with reckless arrogance, following their own desires rather than submitting to God. Their pride resembles the self-exaltation that brings destruction. Tit 1:7 As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach… they are unafraid to slander glorious beings. They speak contemptuously of heavenly powers with no reverence or restraint. Even Michael the archangel did not presume to pronounce a slanderous judgment against Satan, but left judgment to the Lord. Jud 1:9-10 But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed… Yet not even angels, God’s angels serve under His authority and carry out His will. Though they are holy and mighty servants of God, they recognize the limits of their assigned authority. Heb 2:5 For it is not to angels that He has subjected… though greater in strength and power, Angels surpass human beings in power and knowledge, yet their strength does not lead them to act independently or arrogantly. They remain accountable to the Lord. Psa 103:20 Bless the LORD, all His angels mighty in strength… dare to bring such slanderous charges against them Unlike the false teachers, angels do not presumptuously pronounce reviling judgments against glorious beings. They leave final judgment to God rather than speaking with reckless contempt. Jud 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed… before the Lord. The Lord is the final Judge over angels, humans, and all spiritual powers. The false teachers’ contempt reveals their rebellion against the order God has established. Job 1:6 One day the sons of God came to present themselves… These men are like irrational animals, False teachers abandon truth and follow corrupt desires, lacking the spiritual discernment required to recognize God’s authority. Psa 73:22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast… creatures of instinct, Their actions are governed by sinful impulses rather than reverence for God or concern for what is right. Psa 32:9 Do not be like the horse or mule, which have no understanding;… born to be captured and destroyed. Like wild animals caught for destruction, they stand under certain judgment because of their deliberate rebellion. Rom 9:22 What if God, intending to show His wrath… They blaspheme in matters they do not understand, They speak arrogantly against realities beyond their comprehension, treating holy things with contempt. Jud 1:10 These men, however, slander what they do not understand… and like such creatures, they too will be destroyed. Their end will match their conduct: God will judge those who persist in rejecting His truth. Psa 92:7 that though the wicked sprout like grass,… The harm they will suffer is the wages of their wickedness. God’s judgment fits their conduct: those who pursue evil will receive the ruin their rebellion deserves. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God… They consider it a pleasure to carouse in broad daylight. Their sin is open and deliberate. Rather than hiding drunkenness and sensuality, they treat public indulgence as entertainment, revealing hardened consciences. Isa 5:11-12 Woe to those who rise early in the morning… They are blots and blemishes, Though they mingle with believers, their corrupt lives stain the fellowship and contradict the holiness God requires of His people. Eph 5:27 and to present her to Himself as a glorious church,… reveling in their deception as they feast with you. These false teachers participate in the church’s shared meals while secretly exploiting and misleading others. Their outward fellowship masks a settled delight in deceit. Jud 1:12 These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,… Their eyes are full of adultery; Their corrupt desires govern the way they look at others, reducing people to objects for lust and unfaithfulness. Their inward corruption is continual rather than occasional. Mat 5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman… their desire for sin is never satisfied; Indulgence does not bring contentment. Their pursuit of sinful pleasure only deepens their appetite and keeps them enslaved to further evil. Hab 2:5 and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an arrogant man… they seduce the unstable. False teachers prey on those who lack firm conviction and spiritual maturity, drawing them into immorality and error for their own advantage. 2Ti 3:6 They are the kind who worm their way into households… They are accursed children They stand under God’s judgment because they have rejected His ways and persist in leading others toward destruction. Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,… with hearts trained in greed. Greed has become a settled habit, shaping their motives and conduct. They use their influence to gain wealth, power, and personal advantage. Jer 6:13 “For from the least of them to the greatest,… They have left the straight way Peter describes a deliberate abandonment of the path of obedience to God. Act 13:10 O child of the devil and enemy of all righteousness,… and wandered off Their departure was not merely an error in judgment but a continued course away from truth. Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander… to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, Balaam was hired by Balak, king of Moab, to curse Israel, yet he pursued the offered reward despite God’s warnings. Though God prevented him from cursing Israel, Balaam later enticed Israel toward idolatry and immorality. Rev 2:14 But I have a few things against you, because some of you… who loved the wages of wickedness. His desire for material reward outweighed faithfulness to God, making him an example of those who use spiritual influence for personal gain. Jud 1:11 Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain;… But he was rebuked for his transgression Balaam, the non-Israelite prophet hired by Balak of Moab to curse Israel, pursued the reward offered to him despite God’s clear warning. His sin was not ignorance but a willingness to seek personal gain while opposing God’s purpose. Num 31:16 Look, these women caused the sons of Israel,… by a donkey, otherwise without speech, God stopped Balaam through the humble animal he was riding. Though the donkey could not normally speak, God used it to expose what Balaam had failed to see: the angel of the LORD stood in his path with judgment. Num 22:28 Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth,… that spoke with a man’s voice The donkey’s miraculous speech was a direct rebuke to the prophet. Balaam, who claimed to receive divine messages, was corrected by the creature beneath him because he had become blind to God’s will. Num 22:29-30 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me!”… and restrained the prophet’s madness. Balaam’s madness was his reckless determination to continue toward Moab for the promised reward. God mercifully intervened before he advanced further in disobedience. Num 22:33-35 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times.… These men are springs without water They offer the appearance of refreshment but possess nothing that can satisfy spiritual thirst. Like dry springs in a land dependent on scarce water, they disappoint those who seek truth and life. Their message lacks the saving substance of the gospel and cannot nourish or sustain those who follow it. Jer 15:18 Why is my pain unending, and my wound incurable?… and mists driven by a storm. Their teaching is unstable, shifting with error and carried by destructive influences. Though they may briefly attract attention or appear to promise relief, they quickly pass away and leave confusion behind. Jud 1:12 These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,… Blackest darkness is reserved for them. God has appointed certain judgment for those who knowingly distort the truth and lead others into ruin. The darkness describes eternal separation from God, the fitting end for those who reject His light while claiming to speak in His name. Jud 1:13 They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame;… With lofty but empty words, False teachers use impressive but empty speech to make error sound persuasive. Despite their lofty words, they lack true knowledge of God and submission to Christ. Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words,… they appeal to the sensual passions of the flesh They appeal to the sensual passions of the flesh, presenting sinful freedom as desirable and encouraging desires that reject accountability to God. 1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,… and entice those who are just escaping “Those who are just escaping” refers to people beginning to turn from former patterns of sin and false worship. As new or unstable believers, they were especially vulnerable because they had not yet become firmly grounded in the truth. 2Pe 1:4 Through these He has given us His precious and… from others who live in error. The contrast is between those leaving a life ruled by deception and those who remain in it. Rather than leading people toward holiness, these teachers draw them back into the very corruption from which they were beginning to escape. 2Pe 3:17 Therefore, beloved, since you already know these things… They promise them freedom, False teachers appealed to believers with a freedom that cast off God’s commands and excused sinful desires. Their message resembled the serpent’s deception in Eden, presenting disobedience as liberation while concealing its ruinous consequences. Jhn 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. while they themselves are slaves to depravity. Though they claimed spiritual insight and freedom, their lives were governed by corrupt desires. Their conduct exposed the emptiness of their teaching and revealed that they could not lead others into genuine freedom. Rom 6:19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness… For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. Whatever controls a person’s choices, desires, and conduct becomes his master. Sin promises independence but produces bondage; true freedom is found in submission to Christ and obedience to God. Rom 6:16 Do you not know that when you offer yourselves… If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world Having turned from the defilements and godless patterns that mark fallen humanity, they had experienced a real separation from their former way of life. Gal 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us… through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Their escape came through exposure to and acknowledgment of Christ’s saving truth and authority through epignosis, a full, experiential knowledge of Him. Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You… only to be entangled and overcome by it again, By returning to the sins they had left behind, they became enslaved once more to the corruption they had known. 2Ti 2:26 Then they will come to their senses and escape… their final condition is worse than it was at first. Their greater knowledge brought greater responsibility, and their deliberate return to rebellion left them in a more serious condition than before. Mat 12:45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits… It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness Peter describes people who had received clear knowledge of God’s truth through the gospel and the apostolic witness. With that knowledge came responsibility, making their rejection more serious than the ignorance of those who had never heard. Luk 12:47-48 That servant who knows his master’s will… than to have known it and then to turn away Their departure was a deliberate abandonment of what they had professed to accept. In the setting of 2 Peter, false teachers had entered the Christian community, rejected its moral demands, and led others into corruption. Heb 10:26-27 If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received… from the holy commandment passed on to them. The holy commandment includes the apostolic teaching to trust Christ and live in obedience to God. It had been faithfully delivered to them, yet they turned from it, treating God’s revealed standard as something to be discarded. Rom 7:12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy… Of them the proverbs are true: Peter applies familiar sayings to false teachers who have known the way of righteousness yet returned to corruption. Their conduct reveals that exposure to truth has not produced a changed heart. Ecc 12:9-10 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught… “A dog returns to its vomit,” Dogs were regarded as unclean scavengers, making the image deliberately revolting. Returning to former sin after escaping its defilement displays the folly and moral ruin of apostasy. Pro 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. and, “A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.” Though outwardly washed, a pig remains unchanged in nature and returns to what suits it. External reform, religious knowledge, or temporary escape from sin cannot replace genuine repentance and new life in Christ. Pro 30:12 There is a generation of those who are pure… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
