Berean Study Bible Daniel’s Vision by the TigrisAround 536 BC, in the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, Jewish exiles were returning to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, while Daniel remained in the Persian realm amid opposition and uncertainty. Ezr 1:1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,… a message was revealed to Daniel, God again entrusted Daniel with knowledge concerning events beyond his own lifetime. Though advanced in age, Daniel remained a faithful servant and received further instruction about the future of Israel and the nations. Dan 2:19 During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel… who was called Belteshazzar. Daniel retained the Babylonian name Belteshazzar, possibly meaning “Bel protect the king,” assigned to him during his exile, but his identity and loyalty remained rooted in the God of Israel. Dan 1:7 The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel… The message was true, The revelation came from God and would certainly be fulfilled, even though its content involved distant and difficult events. Dan 11:2 Now then, I will tell you the truth: Three more kings… and it concerned a great conflict. The vision addressed a long period of warfare, political upheaval, and spiritual opposition affecting Israel. The conflict would extend through successive kingdoms before God’s final purposes were accomplished. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… And the understanding of the message was given to him in a vision. Daniel did not receive a vague impression but a divinely given vision whose meaning was explained to him. Dan 8:16 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between… In those days Cyrus ruled Persia, and Jewish exiles had begun returning to Jerusalem. The restoration of the temple and community faced opposition and delay. Ezr 1:1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,… I, Daniel, Daniel remained in Persia as an aged servant of God, bearing concern for his people and the fulfillment of God’s purposes. Dan 7:15 I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit, and… was mourning He humbled himself before God with grief, prayer, and fasting, likely burdened by the condition of Jerusalem and the troubling vision he had received. Ezr 10:6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God… for three full weeks. Daniel continued this discipline for twenty-one days, seeking God with sustained seriousness before receiving further revelation. Num 20:29 When the whole congregation saw that Aaron had died,… I ate no rich food, Daniel set aside foods associated with feasting and comfort during his time of mourning before God. His restraint reflected the seriousness of the burden he carried concerning Israel and the future revealed to him. Dan 1:8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself… no meat or wine entered my mouth, He abstained from the provisions of a prosperous table, choosing self-denial as he sought understanding through prayer. This was not a permanent dietary rule but a focused period of mourning and dependence on God. Dan 1:12 Please test your servants for ten days… and I did not anoint myself with oil Daniel also neglected customary personal grooming, which was normally connected with well-being and celebration. His outward manner matched the grief and urgency of his prayer. 2Sa 14:2 So Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there.… until the three weeks were completed. For twenty-one days Daniel continued in mourning, fasting, and prayer. His sustained devotion preceded the angelic visitation that explained the spiritual conflict surrounding the answer to his prayer. Est 4:16 Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found… On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, Nisan fell in March and April and included Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Daniel’s three weeks of mourning had ended shortly before this day, following a season that recalled Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and God’s covenant faithfulness. Ezr 6:19 On the fourteenth day of the first month,… as I was standing on the bank of the great river, Daniel was in the region of Mesopotamia, where he had long served under Babylonian and Persian rule. The riverbank became the setting for the revelation that followed, marking a solemn moment of divine intervention. Ezk 1:1 In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month,… the Tigris, The Tigris was one of Mesopotamia’s principal rivers, flowing through the lands of the Babylonian and Persian empires. Its location underscores that Daniel received this vision while Israel remained scattered among powerful nations, yet under the sovereign direction of God. Gen 2:14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;… I lifted up my eyes, Daniel’s attention is drawn from his surroundings to a heavenly revelation. Dan 8:3 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a ram with two horns… and behold, there was a certain man The figure appears in human form yet bears marks of divine glory, identifying him as a heavenly messenger and possibly the pre-incarnate Christ. Dan 8:15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision… dressed in linen, His clothing reflects the purity and holiness associated with priestly and angelic service. Dan 12:6 One of them said to the man dressed in linen,… with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. The gold belt displays royal authority, splendor, and the majesty of the one who comes with a message from God. Jer 10:9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish,… His body was like beryl, His radiant appearance marked him as a heavenly messenger, displaying the splendor and purity associated with God’s presence. Ezk 1:16 The workmanship of the wheels looked like the gleam of beryl… his face like the brilliance of lightning, The overwhelming brightness revealed a glory beyond ordinary human sight and filled Daniel’s companions with fear. Mat 28:3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes… his eyes like flaming torches, His piercing gaze conveyed alertness, authority, and complete awareness of the conflict surrounding Daniel’s prayer. Rev 1:14 The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow,… his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, The image of shining bronze emphasized strength, stability, and readiness to carry out God’s command. Rev 1:15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace,… and his voice like the sound of a multitude. His voice carried irresistible power, fitting a messenger who spoke with authority from heaven. Ezk 43:2 I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east.… Only I, Daniel, saw the vision; Daniel alone was permitted to see the heavenly messenger and receive the revelation intended for God’s people. His companions were present during the event, confirming that it occurred in a real setting, yet the vision was given specifically to Daniel because of his prophetic calling. Rev 1:10-17 On the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me… the men with me did not see it, Though they could not see what Daniel saw, they were deeply affected by the supernatural encounter. God distinguished Daniel as the recipient of the message while withholding its visible form from those around him. Act 9:7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless.… but a great terror fell upon them, The unseen presence of divine power overwhelmed the men with fear. Their reaction shows that God’s revelation carried an unmistakable reality even for those who were not allowed to understand or behold it. Gen 35:5 As they set out, a terror from God fell… and they ran and hid themselves. The men fled, leaving Daniel alone before the heavenly messenger. Their fear contrasts with Daniel’s role as God’s servant, who remained to receive instruction concerning events yet to come. Rev 6:15-16 Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders… So I was left alone, Daniel’s companions had fled in terror, though they had not seen the heavenly messenger. Daniel remained to receive what God had appointed for him, bearing the vision alone as the prophet chosen to understand its message. Gen 32:24 So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man wrestled with him… gazing at this great vision. The glorious appearance of the messenger revealed the majesty of the heavenly realm and the seriousness of the revelation concerning Israel’s future. Act 7:55-56 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently… No strength remained in me; Daniel’s natural strength failed before the presence of one sent from God. The encounter showed the limits of human ability when confronted with heavenly glory. Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light… my face grew deathly pale, Fear and physical distress overcame him as the vision exposed his weakness before God’s power. Nam 2:10 She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and laid waste!… and I was powerless. Daniel could neither stand nor respond by his own strength. Before he could receive further instruction, God’s messenger would have to strengthen him. Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength… I heard the sound of his words, Daniel heard the heavenly messenger speak, confirming that the vision carried a message from the spiritual realm. Deu 4:12 And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire.… and as I listened, His attention was fixed on the messenger and the revelation being given to him. Deu 5:27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says.… I fell into a deep sleep, Overcome by the glory and power of the encounter, Daniel lost his strength and fell unconscious. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… with my face to the ground. He lay before the messenger in a posture of helplessness, reverence, and submission. Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”… Suddenly, a hand touched me An angelic messenger interrupted Daniel’s helpless state, bringing immediate assurance and preparing him to receive further revelation. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… and set me trembling Daniel remained overwhelmed by the heavenly encounter. His trembling showed both the physical weakness caused by the vision and reverent fear before God’s messenger. Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified… on my hands and knees. The angel raised Daniel from the ground into a posture of humble readiness. Though still weak, Daniel was being prepared to hear and receive the message concerning his people and the future. Ezr 9:5 At the evening offering, I got up from my humiliation… He said to me, The heavenly messenger continued the revelation that began after Daniel’s prolonged mourning and prayer. He said to Daniel, “…” Zec 1:9 “What are these, my lord?” I asked. And the angel… “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. God’s regard for Daniel rested on his faithful obedience and steadfast devotion amid the pressures of exile. Dan 9:23 At the beginning of your petitions, an answer went out… Consider carefully the words that I am about to say to you. Daniel was to give full attention to the revelation concerning the conflicts and kingdoms that would affect his people in the years ahead. Pro 4:20-21 My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear… Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” The messenger had been commissioned to bring Daniel understanding from God. Act 26:16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared… And when he had said this to me, I stood up trembling. Though strengthened to stand, Daniel remained overwhelmed by the majesty of the encounter and the weight of the message. Dan 8:17-18 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified… “Do not be afraid, Daniel,” The heavenly messenger calms Daniel, whose encounter with the unseen realm had left him weakened. Though Daniel had received earlier visions, the presence and glory of the messenger remained overwhelming. Luk 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah,… he said, The messenger speaks with authority as one sent from God to answer Daniel’s concern and explain matters affecting Israel’s future. Gen 22:11 Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him… “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, Daniel had set himself to seek understanding concerning the vision and to humble himself through mourning, fasting, and prayer. His response showed submission to God rather than reliance on his own wisdom. 1Ki 3:9 Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart… your words were heard, God had received Daniel’s prayer from the beginning of his period of mourning. The delay in the messenger’s arrival was not a sign that Daniel had been ignored. Act 10:31 Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts… and I have come in response to them. The messenger’s coming was connected directly to Daniel’s prayers. The events that delayed him reveal that conflict in the spiritual realm accompanied the delivery of God’s message. Act 12:11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure… However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. An evil spiritual ruler connected with the Persian Empire resisted the angelic messenger during the same three weeks Daniel mourned and prayed. Behind Persia’s earthly power stood hostile spiritual forces seeking to hinder God’s purposes. Eph 2:2 in which you used to walk when you conformed… Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, Michael, a high-ranking angel and protector of Israel, entered the conflict and provided the help needed to overcome the opposition. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. The messenger had remained engaged against the spiritual powers associated with Persia until Michael arrived, revealing an unseen conflict surrounding the events of Daniel’s day. Dan 11:2 Now then, I will tell you the truth: Three more kings… Now I have come to explain to you The angel’s arrival answers Daniel’s need for understanding. Sent by God, he reveals the meaning of matters Daniel could not discern on his own. Dan 8:16 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between… what will happen to your people The message concerns Israel, Daniel’s people, and the future God had appointed for them beyond their Babylonian exile. Israel remains central to the unfolding events described in the vision. Num 24:14 Now I am going back to my people, but come… in the latter days, The scope reaches beyond Daniel’s lifetime to the final period of history, when God’s purposes for Israel and the nations move toward their appointed completion. Deu 4:30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened… for the vision concerns those days.” What Daniel is shown belongs to a future sequence of conflict, judgment, and ultimate deliverance. The events are fixed within God’s plan and will occur in the time He has determined. Ezk 12:27 “Son of man, take note that the house of Israel is saying… While he was speaking these words to me, While the angelic messenger spoke of Persia’s conflict and Israel’s future, Daniel recognized the message as a true revelation of events yet to come. Overwhelmed, he turned his face toward the ground and was unable to speak. Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, … I set my face toward the ground Overwhelmed by the heavenly encounter and the weight of what he had heard, Daniel bowed in humility and fear before the messenger. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… and became speechless. His strength and ability to respond failed until he was touched and enabled to speak. Mat 22:12 ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here… And suddenly one with the likeness of a man touched my lips, An angelic messenger appeared in human form and restored Daniel’s ability to speak after the vision had left him overwhelmed and silent. Isa 6:7 And with it he touched my mouth and said:… and I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me, Strengthened enough to respond, Daniel addressed the heavenly messenger who stood before him. Jos 5:13-15 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw… “My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish, The revelation of coming conflicts and suffering had deeply troubled Daniel, leaving him distressed before the messenger. Isa 6:5 Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined,… and I have no strength. Daniel’s physical weakness reflected the weight of what he had seen and the limits of human strength before God’s revealed purposes. Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light… How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord? Daniel is overcome by the vision and addresses the heavenly messenger with humility and respect. Though faithful and greatly beloved, he recognizes the vast difference between human weakness and the authority of God’s messenger. Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”… Now I have no strength, The encounter has left Daniel physically exhausted. The glory and seriousness of what he has seen reveal the limits of human strength before the realities of heaven. Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light… nor is any breath left in me.” Daniel describes complete weakness and distress. He cannot respond or stand on his own, showing his need for strength supplied by God through the messenger. 1Ki 17:17 Later, the son of the woman who owned the house… Again the one with the likeness of a man Daniel was visited once more by the heavenly messenger who appeared in human form. Overcome by the vision and weakened by fear, Daniel needed help to remain in the messenger’s presence. Dan 8:15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision… touched me The messenger’s touch brought direct reassurance and aid from God. Daniel’s encounter was not merely symbolic; he was physically affected by the vision and personally restored by the angelic visitor. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… and strengthened me. God renewed Daniel’s strength so that he could receive the message concerning Israel’s future. The strengthening enabled him to stand, listen, and respond to the revelation entrusted to him. 1Ki 19:8 So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food… “Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” The heavenly messenger reassures Daniel, who had been overwhelmed by the vision and weakened by its weight. God regards Daniel as precious because of his faithful devotion and readiness to seek understanding. Isa 43:4 Because you are precious and honored in My sight,… he said. “Peace be with you! The messenger brings peace from God, calming Daniel in the presence of heavenly revelation. This peace assures him that he is not under judgment but is being prepared to receive what God has revealed. Jhn 20:19 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,… Be strong now; be very strong!” Daniel is commanded to rise from his weakness with strength supplied by God. The repeated encouragement emphasizes that he will need divine strength to bear the message concerning future conflict and suffering. Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?… As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, The messenger’s words restore Daniel physically and inwardly. Having been renewed, Daniel is able to continue listening to the revelation. Psa 119:28 My soul melts with sorrow; strengthen me… “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.” Daniel respectfully asks the messenger to continue. He recognizes that the strength needed to receive and endure God’s message has been given to him. 1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,… “Do you know why I have come to you?” he said. Having strengthened Daniel, the heavenly messenger turns to the purpose of his appearance: to reveal what will happen to Daniel’s people in the latter days. His coming was not casual but part of God’s answer to Daniel’s prayer and mourning. Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified… “I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, The prince of Persia is a powerful spiritual ruler opposing God’s purposes in connection with the Persian Empire. Though Persia governed the Jewish people and permitted many exiles to return, unseen conflict continued behind the actions of earthly kings and kingdoms. Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,… and when I have gone forth, behold, the prince of Greece will come. The coming prince of Greece points to the rise of the Greek Empire after Persia’s fall. Greece would become the next dominant power over the region, bringing events that would deeply affect Jerusalem and the Jewish people. Dan 8:21-22 The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece,… But first I will tell you what is inscribed in the Book of Truth. The Book of Truth is the heavenly record of God’s settled purposes. What Daniel is about to hear has already been determined in God’s counsel and will unfold according to His sovereign plan. Psa 56:8 You have taken account of my wanderings.… Yet no one has the courage to support me against these, Hostile spiritual powers resist the outworking of God’s purposes among the nations. The angel’s conflict reveals that events on earth are connected to an unseen struggle in the heavenly realm. Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;… except Michael your prince. Michael is the great angelic prince assigned to Israel’s defense. His assistance shows God’s continuing protection of His covenant people amid the spiritual conflict surrounding their future. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
