Isaiah 29
Berean Study Bible

Woe to David’s City

Woe to you, O Ariel,

Ariel refers to Jerusalem, bearing a name that can mean “lion of God” or “altar hearth,” suggesting both strength and sacrifice. The woe announces coming judgment and lament against the city that had been set apart for worship yet had turned from faithful obedience.

Isa 30:1 “Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the LORD……
2Ki 25:1-2 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Lam 1:1 How lonely lies the city, once so full of people!…

the city of Ariel where David camped!

Jerusalem was the city David captured and established as the center of his kingdom. He brought the ark there and made it the heart of Israel’s worship. Its connection to David’s covenant and royal line makes its spiritual decline especially serious.

2Sa 5:6-9 Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem…
1Ki 8:1 At that time Solomon assembled before him in Jerusalem…
Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it…

Year upon year let your festivals recur.

Jerusalem continued to observe its appointed feasts, but outward religious activity could not shield the city from judgment. The repeated ceremonies had become detached from genuine faithfulness to God.

1Sa 1:3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city…
Deu 16:16 Three times a year all your men appear before the LORD…
Amo 5:21-23 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”…

And I will constrain Ariel,

Ariel refers to Jerusalem, the city of the Temple and the center of Israel’s worship. The name means “lion of God” or “altar hearth,” suggesting strength and sacrifice. Though set apart for God, Jerusalem had grown spiritually complacent and rebellious. The Lord would bring pressure upon the city through judgment, using surrounding enemies to expose its sin and call its people to account.

Luk 19:43-44 For the days will come upon you when your enemies……
2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…

and there will be mourning and lamentation;

The siege and its consequences would bring grief throughout the city. Loss, destruction, and humiliation would replace the confidence of those who continued religious observances without wholehearted obedience to God.

Amo 8:10 I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs…
Lam 2:5 The Lord is like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel.…
Jer 9:17-18 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Take note,…

she will be like an altar hearth before Me.

Jerusalem would become like the hearth of the altar, marked by fire and sacrifice. God’s judgment would purify and punish the city that bore His name while dishonoring Him.

Ezk 43:15-16 The altar hearth shall be four cubits high,…
Lev 6:12-13 The fire on the altar shall be kept burning;…
1Ki 18:38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice,…

I will camp in a circle around you;

God declares that He Himself will surround Jerusalem, called Ariel in this prophecy, as an enemy army surrounds a city. The image portrays complete encirclement, cutting off escape and exposing the city to judgment for its persistent rebellion.

2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Jer 52:4 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Luk 19:43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies……

I will besiege you with towers

The attack will proceed with the full force and methods of ancient warfare. Siege towers enabled invading armies to assault fortified walls, showing that Jerusalem’s defenses would not withstand the judgment God had decreed.

Ezk 21:22 In his right hand appears the portent for Jerusalem,…
Ezk 26:8 He will slaughter the villages of your mainland…
2Ki 19:32 So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria:…

and set up siege works against you.

Ramps, embankments, trenches, and other siege structures would be raised against the city until its resistance was broken. The coming disaster was not accidental or beyond God’s control; He would use invading forces to bring His warning against Jerusalem to fulfillment.

Ezk 4:2 Then lay siege against it: Construct a siege wall,…
Ezk 17:17 Pharaoh with his mighty army and vast horde…
Jer 6:6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

You will be brought low,

Jerusalem, called Ariel, would be humbled under God’s judgment for persistent disobedience and empty worship. The proud city would be reduced from security and strength to helplessness.

1Sa 2:7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts.
Isa 2:17 So the pride of man will be brought low,…

you will speak from the ground,

The image portrays a conquered and afflicted people, cast down as though near the grave. Their former confidence would give way to weakness and fear.

Gen 4:10 “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out…
Job 16:18 O earth, do not cover my blood;…

and out of the dust your words will be muffled.

Their voice would no longer carry authority or influence. The dust recalls human frailty and the disgrace of defeat.

Psa 30:9 What gain is there in my bloodshed, in my descent to the Pit?…
Lam 3:29 Let him bury his face in the dust—perhaps there is…
Psa 115:17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,…

Your voice will be like a spirit from the ground;

Jerusalem’s cry would sound faint and powerless, like the voice of one brought down to the realm of the dead. The judgment exposed the spiritual emptiness behind the city’s outward religion.

1Sa 28:13-15 “Do not be afraid,” the king replied. “What do you see?”…
Deu 18:11 casts spells, consults a medium or spiritist…

your speech will whisper out of the dust.

God’s warning anticipated real humiliation, yet His purpose was not the destruction of His covenant people. By bringing them low, He confronted their sin and prepared the way for repentance and restoration.

Isa 8:19 When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists…
Job 4:12-16 Now a word came to me secretly; my ears caught a whisper…

But your many foes will be like fine dust,

Jerusalem’s attackers, though numerous and formidable, would prove unable to endure before God’s judgment. Their apparent strength would collapse, leaving them scattered and powerless.

Psa 18:42 I ground them as dust in the face of the wind;…
Psa 83:13 Make them like tumbleweed, O my God, like chaff…
Isa 41:2 Who has aroused one from the east and called him to his feet…

the multitude of the ruthless like blowing chaff.

The violent nations gathered against the city would be swept away as easily as chaff in the wind. Their oppression and military power would have no lasting place against the Lord’s purpose.

Psa 1:4 Not so the wicked! For they are like chaff…
Job 21:18 Are they like straw before the wind, like chaff…
Hos 13:3 Therefore they will be like the morning mist,…

Then suddenly, in an instant,

God’s intervention would come without delay when the appointed time arrived, overturning the plans of Jerusalem’s enemies and showing that He rules over nations and armies.

Pro 6:15 Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly;…
Psa 73:19 How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away…
1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”…

you will be visited by the LORD of Hosts

God would intervene directly against Jerusalem after its persistent spiritual blindness and hypocrisy. The LORD of Hosts rules over heaven’s armies and possesses full authority to judge His rebellious people.

Jer 46:10 For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of Hosts,…
Hos 9:7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution…
Isa 10:3 What will you do on the day of reckoning…

with thunder and earthquake and loud noise,

The judgment would arrive with terrifying signs that display God’s power and unsettle every false confidence.

Exo 19:16 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder…
Rev 16:18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings,…
Psa 77:18 Your thunder resounded in the whirlwind;…

with windstorm and tempest

The imagery portrays an overwhelming assault from which human strength and defenses cannot provide escape.

Nam 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power;…
Ezk 13:13 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 23:19 Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone out with fury…

and consuming flame of fire.

God’s holy judgment would fall with destructive force, consuming what stood against Him and exposing the emptiness of those who trusted in earthly security.

Exo 24:17 And the sight of the glory of the LORD…
Deu 4:24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Heb 12:29 “For our God is a consuming fire.”

All the many nations going out to battle against Ariel—

Ariel, meaning “Lion of God,” refers to Jerusalem, the city God had chosen as the center of worship and the seat of David’s throne. Though Jerusalem would face real enemies and devastating sieges in its history, the gathering of nations against her ultimately falls under God’s sovereign judgment.

Zec 14:2 I will gather all the nations for battle against Jerusalem,…
Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down…
Mic 4:11-12 But now many nations have assembled against you,…

even all who war against her,

The assault is pictured as widespread and determined, with every hostile force joining against the city. Jerusalem’s repeated conflicts reveal both the seriousness of divine discipline and God’s continuing purpose for His people.

Zec 12:9 So on that day I will set out to destroy…
2Ch 20:1-4 After this, the Moabites and Ammonites, together with some…
Psa 83:2-5 See how Your enemies rage, how Your foes…

laying siege and attacking her—

Siege warfare brought starvation, fear, and destruction as invading armies surrounded a city and cut off its resources. Assyrian and Babylonian campaigns against Jerusalem demonstrated the terror of such attacks, yet no army could act beyond the limits God established.

Ezk 4:1-3 Now you, son of man, take a brick, place it before…
Luk 19:43-44 For the days will come upon you when your enemies……
Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…

will be like a dream,

The nations’ apparent strength and success will vanish suddenly. What seemed overwhelming will prove temporary when God intervenes.

Psa 73:20 Like one waking from a dream, so You, O Lord,…
Job 20:8 He will fly away like a dream, never to be found;…
Isa 17:14 In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning…

like a vision in the night,

Their plans against Jerusalem will dissolve like a nighttime vision that disappears at daybreak. God will not allow the enemies of His purposes to have the final word.

Job 4:13-14 In disquieting visions in the night, when deep sleep…
Job 33:15-16 In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep…
Dan 7:2 “In my vision in the night I looked, and suddenly”…

as when a hungry man dreams he is eating,

The nations attacking Jerusalem would expect conquest and plunder, yet their hopes would prove empty. Their apparent opportunity would vanish as quickly as food in a dream.

Isa 55:2 Why spend money on that which is not bread, …
Mat 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,…
Jhn 6:35 Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me…

then awakens still hungry;

Awakening exposes the reality that nothing has been gained. The enemies of Zion would leave dissatisfied and defeated rather than enriched by their assault.

Isa 65:13 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Luk 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things,…
Psa 17:15 As for me, I will behold Your face in righteousness;…

as when a thirsty man dreams he is drinking,

Isaiah intensifies the picture with a thirsty man who imagines relief but receives none. The desire of Jerusalem’s enemies would remain unfulfilled despite their confidence and numbers.

Jhn 4:13-14 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water…
Jhn 7:37-38 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up…
Isa 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;…

then awakens faint and parched.

Their campaign would exhaust them without producing the victory they sought. God would frustrate their plans and leave them weakened.

Psa 143:6 I stretch out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You…
Isa 44:3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land,…
Rev 7:16 Never again will they hunger, and never will they thirst;…

So will it be for all the many nations

The prophecy looks beyond one invading force to every people and army gathered against Jerusalem. Assyria stood as the immediate threat, but the principle extends to all who oppose God’s purposes for Zion.

Mic 4:11-13 But now many nations have assembled against you,…
Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down…
Psa 2:1-4 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?…

who go to battle against Mount Zion.

Mount Zion, Jerusalem, was the city God had chosen for His name and the location of His temple. To attack it was to challenge the Lord Himself, and He would preserve His people according to His purpose.

Zec 14:2-3 I will gather all the nations for battle against Jerusalem,…
Psa 48:4-8 For behold, the kings assembled; they all advanced together.…
Zec 12:3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth…

Stop and be astonished;

Judah’s spiritual condition demanded sober attention. Though surrounded by God’s covenant blessings and prophetic warnings, the people had grown complacent and failed to recognize the danger of their rebellion.

Hab 1:5 Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded……
Act 13:41 Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish! For I am doing…
Jer 4:9 “In that day,” declares the LORD, “the king and officials…

blind yourselves and be sightless;

Their blindness was willful. They resisted God’s truth and refused to discern the seriousness of their sin, leaving them unable to understand His purposes or respond rightly to His warnings.

Deu 28:28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness,…
Jhn 12:40 He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts…
Rom 11:8 “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see…”…

be drunk, but not with wine;

Their confusion did not come from drink but from spiritual corruption and false confidence. They were impaired in judgment, unable to see clearly because they had abandoned dependence on the Lord.

Isa 51:21 Therefore now hear this, you afflicted one,…
Jer 13:13 then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says:…
Lam 3:15 He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me…

stagger, but not from strong drink.

Like intoxicated men, they lacked stability and direction. Their moral and spiritual disorder would leave them unable to stand when judgment came.

Job 12:25 They grope in the darkness without light;…
Psa 107:27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards,…
Isa 19:14 The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion.…

For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep.

God’s judgment had rendered the people spiritually insensitive because they refused His truth. Though surrounded by religious activity, they lacked discernment and could not understand the warnings He gave through His servants.

Rom 11:8 “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see…”…
1Sa 26:12 So David took the spear and water jug by Saul’s head,…
Gen 15:12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep…

He has shut your eyes, O prophets;

Those appointed to speak God’s word were unable to provide the guidance the nation needed. The loss of clear prophetic vision left the people confirmed in their blindness and rebellion.

Isa 6:10 Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears…
Jhn 12:40 He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts…
Mat 13:14-15 In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled:…

He has covered your heads, O seers.

The seers were likewise deprived of understanding and revelation. Israel faced spiritual darkness as its leaders failed to perceive God’s purposes, a condition that contributed to the nation’s coming judgment and exile.

Mic 3:6-7 Therefore night will come over you without visions…
2Sa 15:30 But David continued up the Mount of Olives,…
Lam 2:10 The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground…

And the entire vision will be to you like the words sealed in a scroll.

Isaiah’s revelation of coming judgment and restoration would remain inaccessible to Judah because the people had resisted God’s truth. A sealed scroll was an official document whose contents could not be read without proper authority. The image portrays a nation unable to understand God’s warning because of persistent rebellion.

Dan 12:4 But you, Daniel, shut up these words and seal the book…
Dan 8:26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings……
Rev 5:1 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One…

If it is handed to someone to read,

Even those asked to interpret the message would be unable to provide understanding. Judah possessed priests, scribes, and the Scriptures, yet religious knowledge had not produced obedience or spiritual discernment.

Rev 5:2-4 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice,…
Jer 36:21-23 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll…
Ezk 2:9-10 Then I looked and saw a hand reaching out to me,…

he will say, “I cannot, because it is sealed.”

The sealed scroll illustrates the people’s condition: God’s message was present, but their hardened hearts prevented them from receiving it. Their ignorance was not caused by a lack of revelation, but by their refusal to hear and repent.

Dan 12:9 “Go on your way, Daniel,” he replied, “for the words are”…
Jer 32:11-14 Then I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy…
Rev 5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold…

Or if the scroll is handed to one unable to read,

God’s revelation is inaccessible not because it is unclear, but because the people lack the spiritual capacity and willingness to receive it. Judah’s condition included both religious corruption among leaders and widespread ignorance among the people.

Rev 5:1-5 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One…
Dan 12:4 But you, Daniel, shut up these words and seal the book…
Luk 4:17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him.…

he will say, “I cannot read.”

The answer pictures helplessness before a message that cannot be understood apart from God’s illumination. Though the scroll contains His revealed will, those hardened in unbelief remain unable to grasp its meaning or respond in obedience.

Act 8:30-31 So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah…
2Co 3:14-16 But their minds were closed. For to this day, the same veil…
1Co 2:14 The natural man does not accept the things that…

Therefore the Lord said:

God exposes Judah’s condition and announces His judgment against a people whose religious life had become outward and hollow.

1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…
Hos 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God…
Jer 7:22-23 For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt,…

“These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips,

Their prayers, sacrifices, and public declarations gave the appearance of devotion, yet their words were not matched by faithful obedience.

Mat 15:8 These people honor Me with their lips,…
Psa 78:36-37 But they deceived Him with their mouths,…
Ezk 33:31 So My people come to you as usual, sit before you,…

but their hearts are far from Me.

Though they remained connected to the worship life of Jerusalem, their desires and loyalties were turned from the Lord.

Mrk 7:6 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…
Jer 12:2 You planted them, and they have taken root.…
Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,…

Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.

God condemns worship reduced to inherited religious practices and human requirements rather than submission to His revealed will.

Mrk 7:7 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine…
Col 2:22-23 These will all perish with use, because they are based on…

Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder upon wonder.

God would act against Judah’s outward religion and deliberate blindness in ways that would overturn their expectations. As in earlier dealings with Israel, including the Exodus, He would display His power through events that brought both judgment on unbelief and preservation of His purposes.

Hab 1:5 Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded……
Exo 7:3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I will…
Deu 4:34 Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation……

The wisdom of the wise will vanish,

Judah’s leaders relied on political schemes, religious appearances, and human counsel rather than trusting the Lord. Their plans would fail when God brought the consequences of their rebellion, exposing the weakness of wisdom that ignores His word.

1Co 1:19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;…
1Co 1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe?…
Job 12:17 He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges.

and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”

Those regarded as discerning would be unable to understand what God was doing or escape the judgment they had helped bring upon the nation. True understanding belongs to God, and He can bring proud counselors and rulers to confusion when they reject Him.

Mat 11:25 At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father…
Luk 10:21 At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit…
Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows…

Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD.

God pronounces judgment on Judah’s leaders for secretly pursuing their own counsel, including reliance on foreign alliances rather than trust in Him. Their careful planning could not conceal rebellion from the Lord, who knows every purpose of the heart.

Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…
Psa 139:1-4 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD,…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…

In darkness they do their works

Their schemes were carried out in secrecy because they opposed God’s revealed will. The darkness describes both concealment and the moral corruption of actions meant to avoid accountability.

Jhn 3:19-20 And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world……
Eph 5:11-13 Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds…
Pro 4:19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;…

and say, “Who sees us, and who will know?”

Their confidence rested on the false belief that God would not notice or expose their plans. Isaiah condemns this pride, for no counsel, action, or hidden motive escapes the knowledge of the Creator.

Ezk 8:12 “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders…
Psa 94:7-9 They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob…
Job 22:13-14 Yet you say: ‘What does God know? Does He judge…

You have turned things upside down,

Judah’s leaders acted as though they could conceal their plans from the LORD and determine their own future apart from Him. Their rebellion reversed the proper order between God and His people.

Isa 24:1 Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it…
1Co 1:20-21 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe?…
Isa 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…

as if the potter were regarded as clay.

The image exposes the folly of treating the Creator as though He were subject to the judgment and control of His creation. Israel belonged to God and was accountable to His purposes.

Isa 45:9 Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker—one clay pot…
Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…
Jer 18:6 O house of Israel, declares the LORD, can I not treat you……

Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”?

Denying God’s role as Creator was a rejection of His authority, covenant claims, and right to judge His people.

Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless…
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…
Job 10:8-9 Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me.…

Can the pottery say of the potter, “He has no understanding”?

Those who questioned God’s wisdom assumed that their secret schemes were wiser than His counsel. Isaiah exposes their pride and affirms that the LORD acts with perfect knowledge and purpose.

those who indict a man with a word,
