Malachi 2

A Warning to the Priests

“And now

Malachi directs the Lord’s attention specifically to the spiritual leaders of Judah.

Deu 10:12-13 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
Jos 24:14-15 Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him…

this decree

God’s command carries the force of judgment because the priests had dishonored His name, corrupted worship, and failed to teach His law faithfully.

Hag 2:11-14 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Ask the priests…
Deu 17:9-12 You are to go to the Levitical priests and to the judge…
Lev 10:10-11 You must distinguish between the holy and the common…

is for you,

They could not avoid responsibility for the nation’s spiritual decline.

Deu 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law…
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…

O priests:

Charged with offering sacrifices, guarding the sanctuary, and instructing the people, they had abused their office and led others into sin. Their failure stood in contrast to the faithful priestly service ultimately fulfilled in Christ, the perfect High Priest.

Ezk 44:23-24 They are to teach My people the difference…
1Sa 2:27-36 Then a man of God came to Eli and told him,…
Jer 23:11 “For both prophet and priest are ungodly;”…

If you do not listen,

The priests had ignored the LORD’s rebuke and continued to treat their duties carelessly.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Pro 1:24 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…

and if you do not take it to heart

Their failure was not merely outward; they lacked a settled resolve to honor God in their service.

Isa 42:25 So He poured out on them His furious anger…
Hag 1:5 Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…
Deu 32:46 “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared…

to honor My name,” says the LORD of Hosts,

God’s name represented His holy character and authority, which the priests were responsible to uphold before the people.

Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Ezk 36:23 I will show the holiness of My great name,…
Isa 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory…

“I will send a curse among you,

Their covenant unfaithfulness would bring judgment rather than favor.

Deu 28:20 The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof…
Lev 26:14-17 If, however, you fail to obey Me and to carry out…
Zec 5:3-4 Then he told me, “This is the curse that is going out…

and I will curse your blessings.

Even the benefits connected with their priestly office and the people’s worship would become instruments of discipline.

Deu 28:16-19 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.…
Hag 1:9-11 You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little.…
Psa 107:33-34 He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water…

Yes, I have already begun to curse them,

The hardships facing the post-exilic community showed that God’s warning was already being carried out.

Hag 2:17 I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew,…
Lev 26:18 And if after all this you will not obey Me,…
Deu 28:22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease…

because you are not taking it to heart.

The judgment stemmed from their persistent refusal to respond sincerely to God’s command.

Psa 28:5 Since they show no regard for the works of the LORD…
Isa 5:12 At their feasts are the lyre and harp…
Pro 1:25-26 because you neglected all my counsel, and wanted none…

Behold, I will rebuke your descendants,

God’s judgment would reach beyond the present priests, affecting both their families and the future of their priestly service. Their dishonor of God threatened the continuation of the blessings and privileges connected with the covenant priesthood.

Deu 28:18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, as well as…
1Sa 2:31-34 Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off…
Num 14:18 The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion…

and I will spread dung on your faces,

The priests who had treated holy offerings with contempt would themselves be publicly defiled. What was unclean and removed from sacrificial worship would become the sign of their shame before God and the people.

Nam 3:6 I will pelt you with filth and treat you with contempt…
Ezk 4:12-15 And you shall eat the food as you would a barley cake,…
2Ki 10:27 They also demolished the sacred pillar of Baal.…

the waste from your feasts,

Their festivals and sacrifices continued outwardly, but their corrupt hearts and careless service made their worship unacceptable. The waste of the offerings underscored the hypocrisy and emptiness of ceremonies performed without reverence for God.

Lev 4:11-12 But the hide of the bull and all its flesh,…
Lev 16:27 The bull for the sin offering and the goat……
Exo 29:14 But burn the flesh of the bull and its hide and dung…

and you will be carried off with it.

God warned that He would remove these priests from their honored position as surely as sacrificial refuse was carried away. Their rejection would show that unfaithful leaders could not remain in the service of a holy God.

2Ki 9:37 And Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field…
Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread…
Job 20:7 he will perish forever, like his own dung;…

Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment

God’s rebuke of the priests carried His own authority and required their acknowledgment. Their corruption, dishonest teaching, and disregard for holy worship had violated the responsibilities entrusted to them.

Jer 28:9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace,…
Deu 18:21-22 You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message…
Ezk 2:5 And whether they listen or refuse to listen…

so that My covenant with Levi may continue,”

The covenant established the priesthood to preserve faithful worship, teach God’s law, and serve before Him with reverence. Its blessings were tied to the priests’ obedience and their faithful fulfillment of these duties.

Jer 33:20-22 This is what the LORD says: If you can break My covenant…
Neh 13:29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled…
Num 25:12-13 Declare, therefore, that I am granting him…

says the LORD of Hosts.

Israel’s God rules over heaven and earth and possesses the power to judge those who dishonor His covenant. His command to the priests was therefore both a warning and a call to restore the order He had established.

Hag 1:2 this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say,…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Zec 8:9 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Let your hands be…

“My covenant with him was one of life and peace,

God established a covenant with Levi’s priestly line, granting life and peace as the blessings of faithful service before Him. The priesthood was appointed to guard worship, teach God’s law, and minister on behalf of Israel.

Num 25:12-13 Declare, therefore, that I am granting him…
Ezk 34:25 I will make with them a covenant of peace…

which I gave to him;

These privileges came from God’s own choice and grace, not from human achievement. The covenant bound the priests to God’s purposes and set them apart for holy service.

Deu 33:8-11 Concerning Levi he said: “Give Your Thummim to Levi…
Num 18:19 All the holy offerings that the Israelites present…

it called for reverence,

God required the priests to honor His holiness with fear, obedience, and faithful instruction. Their position carried responsibility because they represented God before the people.

Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
Ecc 12:13 When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter…

and he revered Me

The faithful priest responded to God’s covenant with genuine devotion rather than empty ritual. His conduct reflected submission to God’s authority.

Gen 22:12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel…
Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job…

and stood in awe of My name.

Reverence for God’s name meant recognizing His majesty, holiness, and rightful rule. Malachi contrasts this faithful pattern with the corrupt priests of his own day, who had dishonored God in their worship and teaching.

Deu 28:58 If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law…
Psa 86:11 Teach me Your way, O LORD, that I may walk in Your truth.…

true instruction was in his mouth,

The faithful priest taught God’s Law accurately, preserving the covenant instruction entrusted to Levi and guiding Israel according to God’s revealed will.

Ezr 7:10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD,…
Deu 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law…
Lev 10:11 so that you may teach the Israelites…

and nothing false was found on his lips.

His teaching and judgment were marked by honesty, without distortion, favoritism, or deceptive counsel.

1Pe 2:22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”
Psa 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips…
Psa 15:2-3 He who walks with integrity and practices righteousness…

He walked with Me in peace and uprightness,

His conduct matched his instruction. He lived in faithful fellowship with God, characterized by obedience, integrity, and the peace that comes from covenant faithfulness.

Gen 5:24 Enoch walked with God, and then he was no more…
Gen 6:9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man…
Isa 57:2 Those who walk uprightly enter into peace;…

and he turned many from iniquity.

Through sound teaching and godly example, he led people away from sin and back to obedience to the Lord.

Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…
Act 3:26 When God raised up His Servant, He sent Him first to you…
Dan 12:3 Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,…

For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge,

Priests in Israel were entrusted with guarding and teaching the Law God gave through Moses. Their instruction helped preserve the covenant order and guide the nation in faithful worship and conduct.

Lev 10:11 so that you may teach the Israelites…
Deu 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law…
Ezk 44:23 They are to teach My people the difference…

and people should seek instruction from his mouth,

Israelites were to look to the priests for authoritative guidance in matters of God’s commands, worship, and justice. The priest’s teaching was meant to direct the people according to the revealed will of God.

Deu 17:9-11 You are to go to the Levitical priests and to the judge…
2Ch 17:7-9 In the third year of his reign, Jehoshaphat sent…
Neh 8:8 So they read from the Book of the Law of God, explaining it…

because he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts.

As God’s appointed representative, the priest was responsible to communicate His truth faithfully. His authority did not rest in personal status or opinion, but in the God he served.

Hag 1:13 Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…
Mat 11:10 This is the one about whom it is written: …

But you have departed from the way,

Israel’s priests had turned from the covenant path of obedience and failed to uphold the law they were appointed to teach. Rather than preserving faithful worship, they had neglected their responsibility before God.

Deu 9:16 And I saw how you had sinned against the LORD your God;…
Deu 11:28 but a curse if you disobey the commandments of the LORD…
Pro 2:13 those who leave the straight paths to walk in the ways…

and your instruction has caused many to stumble.

Their corrupt teaching and example led others into sin. Because the priests shaped the spiritual life of the nation, their unfaithfulness brought widespread damage.

Isa 28:7-13 These also stagger from wine and stumble…
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…
Isa 9:16 For those who guide this people mislead them…

You have violated the covenant of Levi,”

God had entrusted the Levitical priesthood with the service of the sanctuary, the offering of sacrifices, and instruction in His law. Their disobedience broke the covenant, a solemn agreement with God, obligations attached to that calling.

Neh 13:29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled…
Jer 33:21 Then My covenant may also be broken with David My servant…
Num 25:12-13 Declare, therefore, that I am granting him…

says the LORD of Hosts.

The charge comes from the sovereign God, whose authority extends over all heaven and earth and who holds His servants accountable.

Hag 1:5 Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Jer 46:18 As surely as I live, declares the King…

“So I in turn have made you despised and humiliated before all the people,

Because the priests had dishonored God through corrupt worship and failed instruction, He removed the honor their office once carried. Though appointed to represent Him before Israel, they had become an object of public contempt through their own unfaithfulness.

Deu 28:37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule…
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows…
Psa 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men…

because you have not kept My ways,

The priests neglected the commandments they were responsible to teach and uphold. Their failure damaged the spiritual life of the nation, since Israel depended on them for faithful instruction, sacrificial service, and righteous judgment.

1Ki 11:33 For they have forsaken Me to worship Ashtoreth…
Jer 44:23 Because you burned incense and sinned against the LORD…
Psa 78:10 They failed to keep God’s covenant and refused…

but have shown partiality in matters of the law.”

Rather than applying God’s law impartially, they favored certain people and distorted justice for personal advantage. Their conduct contradicted God’s righteous character and exposed the need for the faithful and perfect priestly ministry ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Deu 16:19 Do not deny justice or show partiality…
Deu 1:17 Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great…
Lev 19:15 You must not pervert justice; you must not show partiality…

Judah’s Unfaithfulness

Do we not all have one Father?

Israel belonged to God as a covenant people, and every member of the community stood under His fatherly authority and care. Their common relationship to God left no place for pride, exploitation, or disregard for fellow Israelites.

Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless…
Isa 63:16 Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us…
Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is over all……

Did not one God create us?

The one true God formed Israel and established them as His people. Their shared origin under the Creator gave each person dignity and bound the nation together in responsibility before Him.

Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…
Isa 44:24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer who formed you…
1Co 8:6 Yet for us there is but one God, the Father…

Why then do we break faith with one another

Judah’s unfaithfulness toward fellow Israelites included treachery in marriage, injustice, and the abandonment of covenant obligations. Such conduct showed that outward worship had not produced faithfulness in daily life.

Lev 19:11 You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.
Jer 9:4-5 “Let everyone guard against his neighbor; do not trust any…”…
Zec 7:9-10 Administer true justice. Show loving devotion…

so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?

The covenant God made with the fathers—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and later Israel at Sinai—governed the nation’s life before Him. Betrayal within the community profaned, or treated with disrespect, that sacred covenant and dishonored the God who had called them to be His people.

Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…
Deu 29:25 And the people will answer, ‘It is because…
Lev 26:15 and if you reject My statutes, despise My ordinances…

Judah has broken faith;

Judah violated its covenant loyalty to the LORD, abandoning the faithfulness required of the people He had chosen. Their sin was not merely social or political; it was rebellion against God.

Jer 3:8-10 She saw that faithless Israel had committed adultery,…
Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…

an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem.

The offense had spread among the covenant community, including Jerusalem, the city of the temple and center of worship. What God had set apart for Himself was being openly dishonored.

2Ch 36:14 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people…
Jer 7:30-31 For the people of Judah have done evil in My sight,…

For Judah has profaned the LORD’s beloved sanctuary

By tolerating marriages that joined God’s people to pagan worship, Judah defiled the holiness associated with the temple and the nation called to bear the LORD’s name.

Psa 74:7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;…
Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…

by marrying the daughter of a foreign god.

The issue was not ethnicity but allegiance to false gods. Such marriages brought pagan beliefs and practices into Israel and compromised the exclusive devotion God required.

Ezr 10:2-3 Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an Elamite, said to Ezra:…
Deu 7:3-4 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters…

As for the man who does this,

God addresses anyone who violates the covenant by marrying into idolatrous worship and thereby introducing unfaithfulness into Israel’s covenant community. In the postexilic period, such unions endangered the restored nation’s devotion to the Lord.

Psa 37:9 For the evildoers will be cut off, but those who hope…
Psa 94:23 He will bring upon them their own iniquity and destroy them…
Deu 27:26 Cursed is he who does not put the words of this law…

may the LORD cut off from the tents of Jacob

The offender faces removal from the people of Israel and the blessings attached to covenant membership. The judgment reflects the seriousness of abandoning God’s commands while claiming a place among His people.

Lev 17:10 If anyone from the house of Israel or a foreigner…
Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Psa 69:25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one…

everyone who is awake and aware—

No participant, supporter, or knowing witness is exempt from accountability. The wrongdoing was public enough to affect the whole community, not merely the individual household.

Deu 29:10-11 All of you are standing today before the LORD your God…
Jos 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded…
Ezk 9:6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and maidens,…

even if he brings an offering to the LORD of Hosts.

Sacrifices cannot cover deliberate covenant unfaithfulness when the worshiper refuses to repent. The Lord, sovereign over all heavenly armies, rejects outward worship offered alongside disobedience.

Amo 5:21-22 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”…
Isa 1:13-15 Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense…
Jer 6:20 What use to Me is frankincense from Sheba or sweet cane…

And this is another thing you do:

Malachi adds a further charge against Judah’s covenant unfaithfulness, especially their treachery in marriage.

Jer 7:9-11 Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,…
Mat 15:8-9 These people honor Me with their lips,…

You cover the altar of the LORD with tears,

The people brought grief before God’s altar while continuing the sins that had broken fellowship with Him. Their worship could not conceal their disobedience.

Jol 2:17 Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep…
Ezr 10:1 While Ezra prayed and made this confession…

with weeping and groaning,

Their sorrow arose from God’s rejection of their worship, yet they had not dealt with the injustice and faithlessness in their homes.

Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…
Psa 38:8-9 I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.…

because He no longer regards your offerings

God refused their sacrifices because they had dealt treacherously with the wives of their youth, abandoning covenant obligations while expecting His favor.

Isa 1:11-15 “What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?”…
Amo 5:21-22 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”…

or receives them gladly from your hands.

Their offerings were unacceptable because worship and conduct cannot be separated; God required faithfulness to the covenant in both public worship and private life.

Gen 4:4-5 Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock…
Heb 11:4 By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.…

Yet you ask, “Why?”

The people professed ignorance over why God rejected their worship, refusing to acknowledge the sin in their homes.

Jdg 6:13 “Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us…”…
Isa 58:3 “Why have we fasted, and You have not seen?”…
Jer 12:1 Righteous are You, O LORD, when I plead before You.…

It is because the LORD has been a witness

God had seen their conduct and stood as judge over their vows.

Gen 31:50 If you mistreat my daughters or take other wives,…
Jos 22:27 Rather, let it be a witness between us and you…
1Sa 12:5 Samuel said to them, “The LORD is a witness against you…

between you and the wife of your youth,

Many had abandoned the women they married earlier in life, despite the years and obligations they shared.

Pro 5:18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice…
Isa 54:6 For the LORD has called you back, like a wife deserted…
Ecc 9:9 Enjoy life with your beloved wife all the days…

against whom you have broken faith,

Their divorce and unfaithfulness violated a solemn promise made before God.

Ezk 16:59 For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you…
Jer 3:20 But as a woman may betray her husband, so you have betrayed…
Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…

though she is your companion

A wife was not to be treated as disposable, but as a lifelong partner joined to her husband in shared life and responsibility.

Pro 2:17 who abandons the partner of her youth…
Gen 2:18 It is not good for the man to be alone…
Ecc 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return…

and your wife by covenant.

Marriage was a binding covenant under God’s authority, and breaking it brought guilt before Him.

Ezk 16:8 Then I passed by and saw you, and you were old enough…
Hos 2:19-20 So I will betroth you to Me forever;…
Mat 19:6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh.…

Has not the LORD made them one,

God established marriage as a covenant union in which a husband and wife become one flesh. Their bond is meant to be faithful, enduring, and ordered according to His purpose.

Gen 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother…
Mat 19:4-6 Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning…
Eph 5:31-32 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother…

having a portion of the Spirit?

The Lord, who has the fullness of the Spirit, is present in and concerned with the marriage covenant. Marriage is therefore more than a human arrangement; it stands under God’s authority.

Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground…
Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath…
Ecc 12:7 before the dust returns to the ground from which it came.…

And why one?

God’s design for the union of one man and one woman serves His purposes beyond personal companionship.

Gen 2:18 It is not good for the man to be alone…
1Co 7:2 But because there is so much sexual immorality…

Because He seeks godly offspring.

Faithful marriages provide the proper setting for children to be raised in the knowledge and fear of the Lord, carrying covenant faithfulness into the next generation.

Gen 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will…
Deu 6:6-7 These words I am commanding you today are to be…

So guard yourselves in your spirit

Each person must watch over his inner life, desires, and commitments so that unfaithfulness does not take root.

Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…
Pro 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior,…

and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

A husband must remain loyal to the wife he married in his younger years, honoring the covenant he made before God rather than abandoning her for another.

Pro 2:16-17 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman…
Pro 5:18-20 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice…

“For I hate divorce,”

Marriage was established by God as a lifelong covenant in which a man and woman become one flesh. Though the Law regulated divorce because of human sin, it never presented divorce as God’s ideal. The Lord’s words confront the faithlessness of men in Judah who were abandoning their wives, often to marry foreign women.

Gen 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother…
Mat 19:4-6 Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning…
Mrk 10:6-9 However, from the beginning of creation,…

says the LORD, the God of Israel.

Israel belonged to the God who had bound Himself to them by covenant. Their treatment of marriage revealed whether they honored the covenant God who had called them to be faithful.

2Sa 23:3 The God of Israel spoke; the Rock of Israel said to me, …
Deu 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God,…
Hos 2:19-20 So I will betroth you to Me forever;…

“He who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,”

A husband who casts aside his wife deals treacherously with one under his protection. His outward respectability is stained by the injury done to his wife, household, and community.

Psa 73:6 Therefore pride is their necklace; a garment of violence…
Deu 24:1-4 If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing…
Mat 5:31-32 It has also been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife…’…

says the LORD of Hosts.

The God who rules over all heavenly powers speaks with full authority and holds His people accountable for their covenant conduct.

1Sa 1:3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city…
Jer 10:16 The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is…
Isa 6:3 “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts;…”…

So guard yourselves in your spirit

Faithfulness in marriage requires vigilance over the inner life, where selfishness, resentment, and unfaithful intentions begin.

Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…
Deu 4:9 Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves…
Pro 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior,…

and do not break faith.

God commands His people to keep the promises they have made, reflecting His own steadfast faithfulness.

Pro 2:16-17 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman…
Psa 15:4 who despises the vile but honors those who fear the LORD…
1Co 7:10-11 To the married I give this command: A wife must not separate…

You have wearied the LORD with your words;

Israel’s repeated complaints after the exile accused God of indifference and injustice. Though He had restored them to the land, their disappointments led them to judge His dealings by their present hardship rather than by His covenant faithfulness.

Mal 3:13 “Your words against Me have been harsh,” says the LORD.…
Isa 43:24 You have not bought Me sweet cane with your silver,…
Isa 7:13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, O house of David!…

yet you ask, “How have we wearied Him?”

Their response reveals spiritual blindness. They did not recognize that their grumbling and accusations against God were themselves sinful.

Mic 6:3 My people, what have I done to you? Testify against Me…
Jer 2:35 “I am innocent. Surely His anger will turn from me.”…
Psa 10:11-13 He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face…

By saying, “All who do evil are good in the sight of the LORD, and in them He delights,”

Observing the apparent success of the wicked, they concluded that God approved of evil or no longer distinguished between righteousness and sin.

Isa 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…
Pro 17:15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous…
Rom 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree…

or, “Where is the God of justice?”

They demanded immediate proof of God’s justice. Malachi answers in the following chapter that the Lord will come to judge, but His judgment will begin with His own people.

Hab 1:2-4 How long, O LORD, must I call for help…
Psa 94:1-2 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.…
Isa 30:18 Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you;…
