The Duties of the Kohathites

Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

God gave these instructions directly to Israel’s appointed leaders. Moses received and conveyed the Lord’s commands, while Aaron shared responsibility as high priest over the worship and service of the Tabernacle. The instructions that follow establish the duties of the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites in transporting the sanctuary and its furnishings during Israel’s wilderness journey. Their service was ordered carefully because the Tabernacle belonged to the holy presence of God among His people.

“Take a census of the Kohathites

The Kohathites were one of the three major Levitical divisions, descended from Kohath, son of Levi. They were assigned the care and transport of the Tabernacle’s most holy furnishings, including the ark, table, lampstand, altars, and sacred utensils. The census identified those qualified for this demanding service.
