More Proverbs of Solomon

These are additional proverbs of Solomon,

Solomon, David’s son and king of Israel, was renowned for the wisdom God gave him. These sayings were preserved apart from the earlier collections and later added to the book of Proverbs.

Pro 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy…
Pro 1:1 These are the proverbs of Solomon son of David,…
1Ki 4:32 Solomon composed three thousand proverbs,…

which were copied by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah:

During Hezekiah’s reign in Judah, his officials or scribes gathered and copied these proverbs for preservation and instruction. Hezekiah’s reforms restored the worship of the Lord and opposed idolatry, making the careful preservation of God-honoring wisdom fitting to his reign.

2Ch 32:32 As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah,…
2Ki 20:20 As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah…
2Ki 18:5-7 Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel.…

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter

God’s wisdom and purposes exceed human understanding. He has hidden aspects of creation, providence, and His redemptive plan until the appointed time, revealing what mankind needs through His word and works. His concealment does not deny truth but preserves the distinction between the Creator and His creatures.

Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God,…
Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows…
Rom 11:33 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge…

and the glory of kings to search it out.

Kings were charged with investigating disputes, discerning truth, and governing with justice. Solomon’s reign illustrated this responsibility through careful judgment and the pursuit of wisdom. Earthly rulers honor their office when they seek understanding rather than rule by impulse, while Christ alone possesses complete wisdom and judges with perfect knowledge.

1Ki 3:16-28 At that time two prostitutes came to the king…
Ecc 1:13 And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom…
Pro 20:5 The intentions of a man’s heart are deep waters…

As the heavens are high and the earth is deep,

The height of the heavens and the depths of the earth portray realities beyond ordinary human reach and measurement. Together they emphasize the limits of human knowledge before the vastness of God’s created order.

Isa 55:9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,…
Psa 103:11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,…
Job 11:8-9 They are higher than the heavens—what can you do?…

so the hearts of kings cannot be searched.

A king’s heart includes his plans, motives, judgments, and private counsels. Subjects may see his decrees, but they cannot fully know the deliberations behind them. The proverb recognizes the distance between a ruler’s inward purposes and the understanding of those he governs, while God alone knows every heart completely.

Pro 21:1 The king’s heart is a waterway in the hand of the LORD;…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
1Ki 8:39 For You alone know the hearts of all men—…

Remove the dross from the silver,

Silver was purified by heating it so that worthless impurities rose to the surface and could be skimmed away. Only after the dross was removed could the metal be properly worked.

Isa 1:25 I will turn My hand against you; I will thoroughly purge…
Mal 3:3 And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver;…
Ezk 22:18-22 “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to Me.”…

and a vessel for a silversmith will come forth.

Refined silver could then be shaped into a useful vessel. The proverb prepares for the following comparison: removing wicked people from a king’s presence strengthens his rule, just as removing dross makes silver fit for the craftsman.

2Ti 2:20-21 A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver……
Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…
Jer 18:4-6 But the vessel that he was shaping from the clay…

Remove the wicked from the king’s presence,

A king’s advisers and officials shaped the justice of his rule. When corrupt men gained influence, they could distort judgments, exploit the weak, and lead the nation into sin. Faithful rulers needed wise, upright counselors who feared God and upheld His law.

Psa 101:7-8 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…
Pro 20:26 A wise king separates out the wicked and…
Pro 20:8 A king who sits on a throne to judge sifts out all evil…

and his throne will be established in righteousness.

A reign marked by just judgment and moral integrity gains stability because it reflects God’s standard for authority. David’s line was preserved by God’s covenant, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose kingdom is founded on perfect righteousness and will endure forever.

Pro 16:12 Wicked behavior is detestable for kings,…
Psa 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne…
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of His government and peace…

Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king,

Kings possessed authority to reward honor or punish presumption, making self-promotion both unwise and disgraceful. Joseph’s rise in Pharaoh’s court came through God’s providence rather than his own ambition. Before Christ, the true King, humility is the fitting posture.

Ecc 8:2-4 Keep the king’s command, I say, because of your oath…
Pro 30:32 If you have foolishly exalted yourself…
Pro 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom,…

and do not stand in the place of great men;

Places of honor at public gatherings reflected recognized rank and were assigned by those in authority. David refused to seize Saul’s throne, waiting for the Lord to establish him as king. Honor received rightly is better than honor claimed prematurely, for God raises the humble and humbles the proud.

Luk 14:8-10 When you are invited to a wedding banquet, do not sit…
Mat 23:6-7 They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats…
Mrk 12:38-39 In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the scribes.…

for it is better that he says to you, “Come up here!”

Honor is more secure when it is granted by one in authority than when it is claimed for oneself. In public gatherings, seating and position reflected rank, and an invitation to move higher recognized a person’s standing before others.

Luk 14:10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the last place,…
Mat 23:12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled,…
Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.

than that you should be demoted in the presence of the prince.

Presuming a place above one’s proper station could result in public humiliation when a ruler reassigned that place to someone else. Wisdom calls for restraint, since pride can bring disgrace while humility preserves honor.

Luk 14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,…
Pro 18:12 Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud,…
1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand,…

Even what you have seen with your own eyes,

Personal observation does not remove the need for careful judgment. What appears clear may not reveal the full situation, and a person should act with humility rather than hastily asserting himself before those in authority.

1Jn 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,…
Jhn 19:35 The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony……
Act 4:20 For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen…

do not bring hastily to court.

Legal disputes in Israel were commonly heard at the city gate before elders and witnesses. A person was not to begin a case impulsively, without examining the facts, seeking counsel, and considering whether the matter could be resolved peacefully.

Mat 5:25 Reconcile quickly with your adversary,…
Luk 12:58 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary…
1Co 6:7-8 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you…

Otherwise, what will you do in the end

A poorly considered accusation could collapse when evidence was weighed or witnesses testified. The one who acted rashly might be unable to defend his claim, bear the costs of the dispute, or repair the damage caused by his actions.

Pro 20:21 An inheritance gained quickly will not be blessed…
Pro 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end…
Luk 14:28-30 Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first…

when your neighbor puts you to shame?

Public defeat in court brought disgrace and could harm a person’s standing within the community. The warning urges careful judgment and honest dealings with neighbors rather than unnecessary conflict.

Psa 31:11 Among all my enemies I am a disgrace…
Mic 7:5-6 Do not rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion.…
Jer 20:10 For I have heard the whispering of many:…

Argue your case with your neighbor

Disputes should be addressed openly with the person involved rather than spread through the community. In Israel’s close-knit society, unresolved conflict could damage families, households, and public peace. Direct, truthful conversation offered a path toward justice and reconciliation.

Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…
Luk 12:58-59 Make every effort to reconcile with your adversary…
1Co 6:1-8 If any of you has a grievance against another,…

without betraying another’s confidence,

A personal grievance does not justify exposing private matters entrusted by others. Faithfulness in speech protects reputations and preserves the trust necessary for healthy relationships. One who seeks resolution must not become a gossip or use another person’s secrets as leverage.

Pro 11:13 A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person…
Pro 20:19 He who reveals secrets is a constant gossip;…
Pro 16:28 A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip…

lest the one who hears may disgrace you,

Revealing a private matter could provoke the hearer to expose the offender publicly. In a culture where honor shaped a person’s standing within the community, such disgrace could damage relationships, credibility, and influence.

Pro 20:19 He who reveals secrets is a constant gossip;…
Pro 11:13 A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person…
Pro 17:9 Whoever conceals an offense promotes love,…

and your infamy never go away.

A ruined reputation could endure long after the original dispute had passed. Wisdom therefore urges restraint in conflict, since careless disclosure may leave a lasting mark on a person’s name.

Pro 6:33 Wounds and dishonor will befall him, and his reproach…
Jer 23:40 And I will bring upon you everlasting shame…
Jer 20:11 But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior.…

A word fitly spoken

Words spoken at the right time and in the right manner can bring counsel, comfort, correction, or peace. Scripture repeatedly recognizes the lasting influence of speech, whether for good or harm.

Pro 15:23 A man takes joy in a fitting reply—and how good…
Isa 50:4 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship,…
Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt…

is like apples of gold

The picture is of something valuable, beautiful, and worthy of careful display. A wise word is precious because it meets a real need with truth and discernment.

Pro 8:19 My fruit is better than gold, pure gold, and my harvest…
Pro 20:15 There is an abundance of gold and rubies,…
Psa 19:10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;…

in settings of silver.

Gold set within silver creates an image of ordered beauty and fitting craftsmanship. In the same way, timely speech strengthens relationships and reflects the wisdom that comes from fearing the Lord.

Pro 10:20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver,…
Psa 12:6 The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver…
Pro 30:5 Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield…

Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold

Gold jewelry represented beauty, honor, and lasting value in Israel’s world. Such ornaments were worn as signs of dignity and were carefully treasured. The image presents correction as something precious rather than shameful when it is rightly given and received.

Gen 24:22 And after the camels had finished drinking,…
Sng 1:10-11 Your cheeks are beautiful with ornaments,…
Ezk 16:11-13 I adorned you with jewelry, and I put bracelets…

is a wise man’s rebuke

A wise rebuke is truthful correction offered with discernment and moral purpose. It exposes error, restrains harmful paths, and directs the one corrected toward what is right. Its worth lies not in harshness but in the wisdom and faithfulness behind it.

Pro 9:8-9 Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;…
Psa 141:5 Let the righteous man strike me; let his rebuke…
Pro 27:6 The wounds of a friend are faithful, but…

to a listening ear.

Correction becomes beneficial only to one willing to hear it. A humble, teachable person recognizes that rebuke can preserve him from folly and lead to greater wisdom.

Pro 15:31-32 He who listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among…
Pro 18:15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge…
Jas 1:19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…

Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest

Harvest in Israel came during hot, dry weather, when labor in the fields was demanding. Snow brought from the higher elevations, including Mount Hermon, would provide welcome coolness and relief. The image portrays a benefit that is especially appreciated because it arrives in a season of need.

Isa 18:4-5 For this is what the LORD has told me:…
Job 24:19 As drought and heat consume the melting snow,…
Psa 147:16 He spreads the snow like wool; He scatters…

is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him;

Kings, merchants, and military leaders depended on messengers to carry reports and instructions over long distances. A faithful messenger preserved the sender’s words, completed his assignment, and returned with reliable news. His service upheld the plans and reputation of those who entrusted him with their message.

Pro 13:17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy…
Isa 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those…
Jhn 13:20 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever receives the one…

he refreshes the soul of his masters.

Reliable news relieves uncertainty, strengthens confidence, and brings peace to those awaiting an answer. Like cooling snow during the heat of harvest, a dependable messenger restores those who rely on him. Faithful service is therefore a source of comfort and strength to those in authority.

2Ti 1:16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,…
Phm 1:7 I take great joy and encouragement in your love,…
Act 3:19 Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped…

Like clouds and wind without rain

In a land dependent on seasonal rains, clouds driven by wind raised hope for relief and harvest. When no rain fell, the promise of life and provision proved empty.

Jud 1:12 These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,…
2Pe 2:17 These men are springs without water and mists…
Hos 6:4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? For your loyalty…

is the man who boasts of gifts never given.

A person who promises generosity but withholds what he offers deceives others and damages trust. His words create expectation, but his failure to act reveals a lack of integrity.

Pro 3:28 Do not tell your neighbor, “Come back tomorrow…”…
Act 5:1-4 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…

Through patience a ruler can be persuaded,

Those who stand before rulers must often wait for the proper moment and proceed with restraint. Esther approached Xerxes carefully, preparing through fasting and delaying her request until the king was receptive. Her patient conduct helped secure deliverance for the Jews.

Ecc 10:4 If the ruler’s temper flares against you…
Pro 16:14 The wrath of a king is a messenger of death…
1Sa 25:23-35 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey,…

and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

Calm, measured speech can overcome resistance that force cannot move. A ruler, opponent, or hardened person may yield when addressed with wisdom rather than anger. Gentleness is not weakness; it carries the strength to disarm hostility and bring about change.

Pro 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word…
Pro 15:4 A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue……
Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul…

If you find honey,

Honey was a prized food in ancient Israel, valued for its sweetness and associated with the abundance of the land God gave His people. It represents a genuine good received in daily life.

Pro 24:13-14 Eat honey, my son, for it is good, and the honeycomb…
Psa 19:10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;…

eat just what you need,

Good gifts are to be enjoyed with restraint. Wisdom governs appetite rather than allowing desire to rule the heart and body.

Exo 16:16-18 This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Each one is to gather……
Pro 30:8-9 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.…

lest you have too much and vomit it up.

Excess turns a blessing into harm. What was pleasant becomes sickening when taken without self-control, showing that even lawful pleasures can bring loss when pursued beyond their proper measure.

Job 20:15 He swallows wealth but vomits it out;…
Pro 23:20-21 Do not join those who drink too much wine…

Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house,

Hospitality was valued in Israel, yet wisdom required restraint. Frequent, uninvited visits could burden a household and disregard its routines, resources, and privacy.

1Ti 5:13 At the same time they will also learn to be idle…
Pro 27:14 If one blesses his neighbor with a loud voice…
2Th 3:11-12 For we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives…

lest he grow weary

Even a welcomed guest can become a source of strain when he fails to recognize limits. Consideration for another’s time and household preserves goodwill.

Exo 18:18 Surely you and these people will wear yourselves out…
Deu 1:12 But how can I bear your troubles, burdens…
Num 11:14-15 I cannot carry all these people by myself;…

and hate you.

Presumption can turn friendship into resentment. Respecting proper boundaries helps prevent needless offense and division.

Pro 15:17 Better a dish of vegetables where there is love…
Pro 21:19 Better to live in the desert than with a contentious wife…
Pro 27:15-16 A constant dripping on a rainy day and a contentious woman…

Like a club or sword or sharp arrow

Weapons of war could wound or kill by crushing force, close attack, or distant strike. False testimony carries similar power, bringing harm in different ways and often reaching beyond the moment it is spoken.

Psa 64:3-4 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…
Pro 12:18 Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword,…

is a man who bears false witness

In Israel’s courts, witness testimony could determine property disputes, punishments, and even matters of life and death. A lying witness therefore attacked both justice and the person accused, using words to inflict damage that weapons might cause openly.

Exo 20:16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Deu 19:16-19 If a false witness testifies against someone,…
Pro 14:5 An honest witness does not deceive, but a dishonest witness…

against his neighbor.

Such deceit violates the obligations of life within the covenant community. It destroys trust, damages reputations, and turns one person against another, rather than preserving truth and justice among God’s people.

Pro 24:28 Do not testify against your neighbor without cause,…
Deu 5:20 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Lev 19:16 You must not go about spreading slander among your people.…

Like a broken tooth or a foot out of joint

Both injuries bring sharp pain and make ordinary tasks difficult. A damaged tooth hinders eating, while a dislocated foot prevents steady walking and work. The comparison portrays trust that fails precisely when support is most needed.

Lam 3:16 He has ground my teeth with gravel and trampled…
Psa 73:2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;…
Psa 38:17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me.

is confidence in a faithless man

Reliance on an unfaithful person produces harm rather than help. Such a person may appear dependable in peaceful circumstances but proves unreliable when responsibility, courage, or loyalty is required.

Psa 118:8-9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD…
Jer 17:5 This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the man who trusts…
Mic 7:5 Do not rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion.…

in time of trouble.

Adversity exposes character. When danger, loss, or pressure comes, misplaced trust leaves a person vulnerable, like one unable to chew or walk because of a painful injury.

Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…
Psa 9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold…
Nam 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress;…

Like one who removes a garment on a cold day

Removing needed clothing in cold weather leaves a person exposed and suffering. It pictures conduct that ignores another’s condition rather than providing the care and protection needed.

Exo 22:26-27 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral,…
Deu 24:12-13 If he is a poor man, you must not go to sleep…
Job 31:19-20 if I have seen one perish for lack of clothing,…

or vinegar poured on a wound

Vinegar intensifies pain when placed on an open wound. So too, careless words or misplaced cheer can deepen grief instead of bringing relief.

Luk 10:34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil…
Psa 69:21 They poisoned my food with gall and gave me vinegar…
Pro 10:26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes…

is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.

Joyful songs are fitting in seasons of celebration, but they can be cruel when offered to someone burdened by sorrow. Wisdom recognizes another’s grief and responds with understanding rather than forcing happiness.

Jas 5:13 Is any one of you suffering? He should pray.…
Rom 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.
Pro 12:25 Anxiety weighs down the heart of a man, but a good word…

If your enemy is hungry,

The command “If your enemy is hungry...” calls believers to meet an adversary’s need rather than exploit his weakness. In a culture where hospitality signaled peace and goodwill, such treatment rejected retaliation and left open the possibility of reconciliation.

Rom 12:20 On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;…
Luk 6:27-28 But to those of you who will listen, I say:…

give him food to eat,

Offering food to an enemy demonstrated practical mercy and could disarm hostility without excusing wrongdoing.

2Ki 6:22-23 “Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those…
2Ch 28:15 Then the men who were designated by name arose,…

and if he is thirsty,

The phrase “and if he is thirsty” calls believers to meet an enemy’s basic human need with restraint and kindness.

Mat 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat,…
Jhn 7:37-38 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up…

give him water to drink.

Such conduct places vengeance in God’s hands and answers evil with good, reflecting His patience toward those who oppose Him.

Mrk 9:41 Indeed, if anyone gives you even a cup of water…
Mat 10:42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water…

For in so doing,

“For in so doing” explains that responding to an enemy with kindness may lead them to shame and repentance, while leaving judgment and justice to God.

Luk 6:27-28 But to those of you who will listen, I say:…
Mat 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray…
Exo 23:4-5 If you encounter your enemy’s stray ox or donkey,…

you will heap burning coals on his head,

The phrase “you will heap burning coals on his head” describes the shame an offender may feel when met with kindness, which may lead to repentance rather than deepen the conflict.

Rom 12:20 On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;…
Psa 140:10 May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown…
Psa 11:6 On the wicked He will rain down fiery coals and sulfur;…

and the LORD will reward you.

God sees righteousness done at personal cost and will repay those who trust Him rather than seek vengeance.

Pro 19:17 Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD,…
Mat 6:4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father,…
Luk 14:14 and you will be blessed. Since they cannot repay…

As the north wind brings forth rain,

Weather governed the rhythm of life in Israel, where rain determined the success of crops and the welfare of families and livestock. The north wind is presented as a recognizable cause producing its expected result, underscoring the certainty of what follows.

Psa 135:7 He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth.…
Jer 10:13 When He thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;…
1Ki 18:44-45 On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud”…

so a backbiting tongue brings angry looks.

Secret slander and malicious gossip damage reputations, divide households, and provoke resentment in those who hear or are harmed by them. Words spoken behind another’s back may be hidden at first, but their effects commonly appear in distrust, conflict, and anger.

Pro 16:28 A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip…
Pro 18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels…
Pro 26:20 Without wood, a fire goes out; without gossip, a conflict…

Better to live on a corner of the roof

Flat-roofed homes in ancient Israel provided space for work, rest, and sleep during warm weather, but a roof corner offered little shelter or comfort. Even such isolation was preferable to living amid continual conflict.

Pro 21:9 Better to live on a corner of the roof…
Pro 21:19 Better to live in the desert than with a contentious wife…
Pro 17:1 Better a dry morsel in quietness than house full of feasting…

than to share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

A contentious wife brings strife into the center of household life, where peace and order should prevail. The proverb warns that persistent conflict makes a home burdensome and calls for relationships marked by respect, self-control, and peace.

Pro 19:13 A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife…
Pro 27:15 A constant dripping on a rainy day and a contentious woman…
Pro 12:4 A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown,…

Like cold water to a weary soul

Cold water brought immediate relief to travelers and laborers in Israel’s dry climate, restoring strength to those exhausted by heat and distance. The image portrays the profound renewal that comes to a person worn down in heart and spirit.

Psa 23:2-3 He makes me lie down in green pastures;…
Jer 31:25 I will refresh the weary soul and replenish…
Jhn 7:37-38 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up…

is good news from a distant land.

In an age when messages traveled slowly and dangers could delay or prevent their arrival, favorable reports from far away brought great comfort and hope. Such news revives the discouraged as surely as cold water refreshes the weary.

Gen 45:26-27 “Joseph is still alive,” they said, “and he is ruler…
Pro 15:30 The light of the eyes cheers the heart…
Isa 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those…

Like a muddied spring or a polluted well

Springs and wells were essential sources of drinking water in Israel. When contaminated, they became unfit for people and livestock and could spread disease. Their loss represented both danger and deprivation.

Ezk 34:18-19 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture?…
Jas 3:11-12 Can both fresh water and salt water flow…
Jer 2:13 For My people have committed two evils:……

is a righteous man

A righteous man is expected to live faithfully under God’s rule, marked by integrity, justice, and obedience. His conduct should provide stability and help to those around him.

Psa 15:1-2 A Psalm of David. O LORD, who may abide in Your tent?…
Psa 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel…
Pro 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life…

who gives way to the wicked.

When a righteous person yields before evil—through fear, compromise, or participation in injustice—his influence is corrupted. Like polluted water, he no longer offers the strength and protection others should be able to receive from him.

Psa 125:3 For the scepter of the wicked will not rest…
Exo 23:2 You shall not follow the crowd in wrongdoing.…
2Ch 19:2 Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to confront him…

It is not good to eat too much honey

Honey was a valued food in Israel and a sign of the land’s abundance, yet even something good becomes harmful when consumed without restraint. The image warns against excess and commends self-control in ordinary pleasures.

Pro 27:7 The soul that is full loathes honey, but to a hungry soul,…
Pro 23:20-21 Do not join those who drink too much wine…
Pro 30:8-9 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.…

or to search out one’s own glory.

Seeking recognition, honor, or praise for oneself is equally excessive. Human glory is unstable and often feeds pride, while true honor belongs to God and is received rightly through humility, faithful service, and obedience.

Jhn 8:50 I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it……
Jhn 7:18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory…
Pro 27:2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth…

Like a city whose walls are broken down

Ancient city walls guarded inhabitants from enemies and wild animals. When Jerusalem’s walls lay in ruins, the city stood exposed and disgraced until they were rebuilt under Nehemiah. A breached wall left no reliable defense, portraying the disorder and danger that follow when restraint is absent.

Neh 1:3 And they told me, “The remnant who survived the exile…
Pro 24:31 Thorns had grown up everywhere, thistles had covered…
Isa 5:5 Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My vineyard:…

is a man who does not control his temper.

Unchecked anger leaves a person vulnerable to sinful words, rash actions, and damaged relationships. Saul’s anger toward David grew into jealousy and violence, contributing to his ruin. Self-control guards the heart and preserves conduct under pressure, reflecting the restraint Christ showed when He suffered unjustly.

Pro 29:11 A fool vents all his anger, but a wise man holds it back.
Pro 14:29 A patient man has great understanding, but…
Jas 1:19-20 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
