15. He hates her, and shamefully turns her away
19. Absalom entertains her, and conceals his purpose

Now Absalom had ordered his young men
Absalom, the third son of King David, is taking decisive action against his half-brother Amnon. This reflects the deep-seated animosity following Amnon's violation of their sister Tamar. The use of "young men" indicates Absalom's authority and influence, as he commands his servants to carry out his will, a common practice for those of noble status in ancient Israel.

Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine
The setting is a feast, a common occasion for celebration and drinking in ancient Near Eastern culture. Wine was often used to induce a state of relaxation or vulnerability. This phrase suggests a premeditated plan to catch Amnon off guard, reminiscent of other biblical narratives where wine leads to significant events, such as Noah's drunkenness (Genesis 9:21) or Lot's daughters (Genesis 19:32-35).

and when I order you to strike Amnon down, you are to kill him
Absalom's command is clear and ruthless, reflecting the law of retribution, "an eye for an eye" (Exodus 21:23-25). This act of vengeance is personal and calculated, highlighting the cycle of violence within David's family, a consequence of David's own sins (2 Samuel 12:10-12).

Do not be afraid
Absalom reassures his men, acknowledging the gravity of the task. This echoes God's frequent encouragement to His people to not fear when undertaking daunting tasks (Joshua 1:9). However, here it is used in a morally complex situation, contrasting divine missions with human vendettas.

Have I not commanded you?
Absalom asserts his authority, reminiscent of military leaders in Israel who commanded obedience. This phrase underscores the hierarchical nature of ancient societies, where loyalty to one's superior was paramount, even above moral considerations.

Be courageous and valiant!
These words are often associated with battle and heroism in the Old Testament (e.g., Joshua 1:6). Absalom's use of them in this context is ironic, as he calls for bravery in committing murder, twisting the noble call to courage for a sinister purpose. This reflects the tragic misuse of God-given virtues for personal revenge, contrasting with the righteous courage exemplified by figures like David in his youth (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

Persons / Places / Events
1. Absalom
The third son of King David, known for his handsome appearance and later rebellion against his father. In this passage, he orchestrates the murder of his half-brother Amnon.

2. Amnon
The firstborn son of King David, who previously committed a grievous sin against his half-sister Tamar, which led to Absalom's desire for revenge.

3. Young Men
Servants of Absalom, tasked with carrying out the murder of Amnon at Absalom's command.

4. King David
Although not directly mentioned in this verse, he is the father of both Absalom and Amnon, and his family dynamics play a crucial role in the unfolding events.

5. The Feast
The setting of the event, where Absalom uses the occasion of a feast to execute his plan against Amnon.
Teaching Points
The Consequences of Sin
Absalom's actions are a direct result of Amnon's sin against Tamar. Sin often leads to further sin, creating a cycle of destruction.

Misuse of Authority
Absalom uses his position to manipulate others into committing murder, showing how authority can be abused for personal vendettas.

The Danger of Unchecked Emotions
Absalom's anger and desire for revenge lead to murder. It's crucial to address emotions like anger and bitterness before they lead to sin.

The Importance of Justice
Absalom's actions highlight the need for justice and proper channels to address wrongs, rather than taking matters into one's own hands.

Courage in the Wrong Context
Absalom's call to "be strong and courageous" is a perversion of a biblical principle, reminding us to discern the context and purpose of our actions.

What Does 2 Samuel 13:28 Mean
Now Absalom had ordered his young men

• Absalom is acting as a commander, giving pre-planned instructions to his personal servants rather than relying on official military or judicial processes (compare 2 Samuel 13:23–24).

• His calculated leadership reveals a heart set on vengeance for the rape of his sister Tamar (2 Samuel 13:1–22) rather than on seeking justice God’s way (Deuteronomy 16:18–20; Romans 12:19).

• The verse shows how far David’s son has moved from the king’s oversight; the household of the prince becomes the stage for vigilante justice, echoing earlier family breakdowns such as Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:8).

Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine

• Waiting for Amnon’s drunken state mirrors occasions where alcohol lowered vigilance—see Nabal’s feast (1 Samuel 25:36) and Belshazzar’s banquet (Daniel 5:1–4).

• Absalom’s plan is shrewd:

– Drunkenness dulls resistance (Proverbs 23:29–35).

– A festival setting masks murderous intent (2 Samuel 13:23).

• The command underscores the danger of unchecked passions in David’s household: Amnon’s lust led to Tamar’s violation; Absalom’s wrath now leads to murder (James 1:14–15).

And when I order you to strike Amnon down, you are to kill him

• Absalom demands total obedience, usurping the role of judge and executioner (Genesis 9:6; Numbers 35:30–31).

• The premeditated nature of the crime fulfills the principle “with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:2); Amnon’s sin brought secret pain, Absalom’s sin brings public bloodshed (2 Samuel 12:10–12).

• This moment foreshadows Absalom’s later bid for the throne (2 Samuel 15:1–6); rebellion in personal life often paves the way for broader rebellion.

Do not be afraid

• Absalom addresses the servants’ natural fear of murdering a royal prince; he counters it with reassurance, much like Saul attempting to bind his men to kill David (1 Samuel 19:1).

• The phrase shows how leaders can manipulate followers’ consciences, urging them to sin while offering false security (John 19:12).

• Fear of God, not man, should govern action (Proverbs 1:7); here fear is being redirected toward Absalom’s authority.

Have I not commanded you? Be courageous and valiant!

• Absalom borrows language reminiscent of God’s charge to Joshua (“Be strong and courageous,” Joshua 1:6–9), twisting it for wicked ends.

• He equates courage with committing murder, illustrating Isaiah 5:20, “Woe to those who call evil good.”

• The servants face a moral crossroads: obey an unrighteous command or risk their lives by refusing (Acts 5:29). Tragically, they comply (2 Samuel 13:29).

summary

2 Samuel 13:28 records Absalom’s meticulous, vengeful directive to assassinate Amnon. Each phrase exposes a heart hardened by bitterness, manipulating circumstances, subordinates, and even godly language to achieve revenge. The verse warns that personal vengeance, cloaked in calculated leadership, breeds greater violence and fractures families, echoing the biblical call to leave justice to the Lord and walk in true courage—the courage to obey God rather than men.

Verse 28. - Smite Amnon. The order was given before the banquet began, and every arrangement made to render the attack successful. Though Tamar's wrong was the mainspring of Absalom's conduct, yet neither he nor his men would forget that Amnon stood between him and the crown; and Amnon, entirely off his guard, never very wise at his best, and with his senses made dull by wine, seems to have fallen an easy prey. And as soon as the murder was committed, the rest of the king's sons, though all had attendants with them, fled in dismay, not knowing what might be the extent of Absalom's purpose. It is said that they fled on mules, this being the first place in which this animal is mentioned, as the word so translated in Genesis 36:24 really means "hot springs," and is so translated in the Revised Version. The breeding of hybrids was forbidden in Leviticus 19:19, and probably they were procured, as were horses, by trade. Up to this time the ass had been used for riding; but now David had a favourite mule (1 Kings 1:33), and Solomon received mules as tribute (1 Kings 10:25). Horses seem to have been used chiefly for chariots.
