Judah’s Inheritance

1  וַיְהִ֣י (And this was) הַגּוֹרָ֗ל (the lot) לְמַטֵּ֛ה (of the tribe) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם (by their clans) אֶל־ (unto) גְּב֨וּל (the border) אֱד֧וֹם (of Edom), מִדְבַּר־ (the Wilderness) צִ֛ן (of Zin) נֶ֖גְבָּה (southward) מִקְצֵ֥ה (from the end) תֵימָֽן׃ (of the south):

2  וַיְהִ֤י (And began) לָהֶם֙ (their) גְּב֣וּל (border) נֶ֔גֶב (southern) מִקְצֵ֖ה (at the shore) יָ֣ם (of Sea) הַמֶּ֑לַח (the Salt), מִן־ (from) הַלָּשֹׁ֖ן (the bay) הַפֹּנֶ֥ה (that faces) נֶֽגְבָּה׃ (southward). 3  וְ֠יָצָא (And it went out) אֶל־ (to) מִנֶּ֜גֶב (the southern side) לְמַעֲלֵ֤ה (of the Ascent) עַקְרַבִּים֙ (of Akrabbim), וְעָ֣בַר (and passed over to) צִ֔נָה (Zin), וְעָלָ֥ה (and ascended) מִנֶּ֖גֶב (from the Negev) לְקָדֵ֣שׁ (of Kadesh-) בַּרְנֵ֑עַ (barnea), וְעָבַ֤ר (and passed over to) חֶצְרוֹן֙ (Hezron) וְעָלָ֣ה (and went up to) אַדָּ֔רָה (Addar), וְנָסַ֖ב (and went around) הַקַּרְקָֽעָה׃ (toward Karka). 4  וְעָבַ֣ר (And it passed toward) עַצְמ֗וֹנָה (Azmon), וְיָצָא֙ (and went out to) נַ֣חַל (the Brook) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), וְהָיָה (and it was), תֹּצְא֥וֹת (the outgoings) הַגְּב֖וּל (of the border) יָ֑מָּה (at the sea). זֶה־ (This) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) גְּב֥וּל (border) נֶֽגֶב׃ (southern).

5  וּגְב֥וּל (And the border) קֵ֙דְמָה֙ (eastern was) יָ֣ם (Sea) הַמֶּ֔לַח (the Salt), עַד־ (as far as) קְצֵ֖ה (the mouth) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan).

וּגְב֞וּל (And the border began) לִפְאַ֤ת (on the quarter) צָפ֙וֹנָה֙ (northern) מִלְּשׁ֣וֹן (at the bay) הַיָּ֔ם (of the sea) מִקְצֵ֖ה (at the mouth) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (of the Jordan). 6  וְעָלָ֤ה (And went up) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) בֵּ֣ית (to Beth-) חָגְלָ֔ה (hoglah), וְעָבַ֕ר (and passed) מִצְּפ֖וֹן (north) לְבֵ֣ית (of Beth-) הָעֲרָבָ֑ה (arabah), וְעָלָ֣ה (and went up) הַגְּב֔וּל (the border) אֶ֥בֶן (to the stone) בֹּ֖הַן (of Bohan) בֶּן־ (son) רְאוּבֵֽן׃ (of Reuben). 7  וְעָלָ֨ה (And went up) הַגְּב֥וּל׀ (the border) דְּבִרָה֮ (to Debir) מֵעֵ֣מֶק (from the Valley) עָכוֹר֒ (of Achor), וְצָפ֜וֹנָה (and northward) פֹּנֶ֣ה (it turned) אֶל־ (toward) הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל (Gilgal), אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) נֹ֙כַח֙ (before) לְמַעֲלֵ֣ה (the Ascent) אֲדֻמִּ֔ים (of Adummim), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) מִנֶּ֖גֶב (on the south side) לַנָּ֑חַל (of the ravine). וְעָבַ֤ר (And continued) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) אֶל־ (toward) מֵי־ (the waters) עֵ֣ין (of En-) שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ (shemesh), וְהָי֥וּ (and) תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו (it ended) אֶל־ (at) עֵ֥ין (En-) רֹגֵֽל׃ (rogel). 8  וְעָלָ֨ה (And went up) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) גֵּ֣י (by the Valley) בֶן־ (of the Son) הִנֹּ֗ם (of Hinnom) אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֤תֶף (slope) הַיְבוּסִי֙ (of the Jebusite) מִנֶּ֔גֶב (the southern) הִ֖יא (that is), יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (Jerusalem)) וְעָלָ֨ה (and went up) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) אֶל־ (to) רֹ֣אשׁ (the top) הָהָ֗ר (of the hill) אֲ֠שֶׁר (that is) עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵ֤י (the face) גֵֽי־ (of the Valley) הִנֹּם֙ (of the Son of Hinnom) יָ֔מָּה (westward), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (which is) בִּקְצֵ֥ה (at the end) עֵֽמֶק־ (of the Valley) רְפָאִ֖ים (of the Rephaim) צָפֹֽנָה׃ (northward). 9  וְתָאַ֨ר (And went around) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) מֵרֹ֣אשׁ (from the top) הָהָ֗ר (of the hill) אֶל־ (to) מַעְיַן֙ (the fountain) מֵ֣י (of the waters) נֶפְתּ֔וֹחַ (of Nephtoah), וְיָצָ֖א (and it went out) אֶל־ (to) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הַר־ (of Mount) עֶפְר֑וֹן (Ephron), וְתָאַ֤ר (and went around) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) בַּעֲלָ֔ה (to Baalah), הִ֖יא (that is) קִרְיַ֥ת (Kiriath-) יְעָרִֽים׃ (jearim). 10  וְנָסַב֩ (And turned) הַגְּב֨וּל (the border) מִבַּעֲלָ֥ה (from Baalah) יָ֙מָּה֙ (westward) אֶל־ (to) הַ֣ר (Mount) שֵׂעִ֔יר (Seir), וְעָבַ֕ר (and passed over) אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֧תֶף (the side) הַר־ (of Mount) יְעָרִ֛ים (Jearim) מִצָּפ֖וֹנָה (on the north), הִ֣יא (that is) כְסָל֑וֹן (Chesalon), וְיָרַ֥ד (and went down) בֵּֽית־ (to Beth-) שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ (shemesh), וְעָבַ֥ר (and passed over) תִּמְנָֽה׃ (to Timnah). 11  וְיָצָ֨א (And went out) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֣תֶף (the side) עֶקְרוֹן֮ (of Ekron) צָפוֹנָה֒ (northward), וְתָאַ֤ר (and went around) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) שִׁכְּר֔וֹנָה (to Shicron), וְעָבַ֥ר (and passed over) הַר־ (to mount) הַֽבַּעֲלָ֖ה (Baalah), וְיָצָ֣א (and went on) יַבְנְאֵ֑ל (to Jabneel); וְהָי֛וּ (and) תֹּצְא֥וֹת (ended) הַגְּב֖וּל (the border) יָֽמָּה׃ (at the sea).

12  וּגְב֣וּל (And the border) יָ֔ם (western) הַיָּ֥מָּה (was the Sea) הַגָּד֖וֹל (Great) וּגְב֑וּל (and its coastline).

זֶ֠ה (This is) גְּב֧וּל (the boundary) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֛ה (of Judah) סָבִ֖יב (all around) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ (by their clans).

Caleb’s Portion and Conquest
(Judges 1:8–26)

13  וּלְכָלֵ֣ב (And to Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּ֗ה (of Jephunneh) נָ֤תַן (he gave) חֵ֙לֶק֙ (a portion) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), אֶל־ (according to) פִּ֥י (the commandment) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) לִֽיהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (to Joshua), אֶת־ (-) קִרְיַ֥ת (Kiriath-) אַרְבַּ֛ע (arba) אֲבִ֥י (the father) הָעֲנָ֖ק (of Anak)), הִ֥יא (that is), חֶבְרֽוֹן׃ (Hebron). 14  וַיֹּ֤רֶשׁ (And drove out) מִשָּׁם֙ (from there) כָּלֵ֔ב (Caleb) אֶת־ (-) שְׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה (the three) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) הָעֲנָ֑ק (of Anak)— אֶת־ (-) שֵׁשַׁ֤י (Sheshai), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲחִימַן֙ (Ahiman), וְאֶת־ (and) תַּלְמַ֔י (Talmai), יְלִידֵ֖י (the sons) הָעֲנָֽק׃ (of Anak).

15  וַיַּ֣עַל (And he went up) מִשָּׁ֔ם (from there) אֶל־ (to) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) דְּבִ֑ר (of Debir); וְשֵׁם־ (and the name) דְּבִ֥ר (of Debir was) לְפָנִ֖ים (formerly) קִרְיַת־ (Kiriath-) סֵֽפֶר׃ (sepher). 16  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said), כָּלֵ֔ב (Caleb) אֲשֶׁר־ (Who) יַכֶּ֥ה (He attacks) אֶת־ (-) קִרְיַת־ (Kiriath-) סֵ֖פֶר (sepher), וּלְכָדָ֑הּ (and takes it) וְנָתַ֥תִּי (and I will give) ל֛וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) עַכְסָ֥ה (Acsah) בִתִּ֖י (my daughter) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (as wife). 17  וַֽיִּלְכְּדָ֛הּ (And took it) עָתְנִיאֵ֥ל (Othniel) בֶּן־ (son) קְנַ֖ז (of Kenaz), אֲחִ֣י (the brother) כָלֵ֑ב (of Caleb), וַיִּתֶּן־ (and he gave) ל֛וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) עַכְסָ֥ה (Acsah) בִתּ֖וֹ (his daughter) לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ (for a wife).

18  וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass), בְּבוֹאָ֗הּ (in her coming in), וַתְּסִיתֵ֙הוּ֙ (that she persuaded him) לִשְׁא֤וֹל (to request) מֵֽאֵת־ (from) אָבִ֙יהָ֙ (her father) שָׂדֶ֔ה (a field). וַתִּצְנַ֖ח (And she dismounted) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הַחֲמ֑וֹר (her donkey), וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ (and said) לָ֥הּ (to her) כָּלֵ֖ב (Caleb), מַה־ (What) לָּֽךְ׃ (do you want).

19  וַתֹּ֜אמֶר (And she answered), תְּנָה־ (Give) לִּ֣י (to me) בְרָכָ֗ה (a blessing). כִּ֣י (Since) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ (of the Negev) נְתַתָּ֔נִי (you have given me), וְנָתַתָּ֥ה (and give) לִ֖י (to me) גֻּלֹּ֣ת (springs) מָ֑יִם (of water).

וַיִּתֶּן־ (And he gave) לָ֗הּ (to her) אֵ֚ת (-) גֻּלֹּ֣ת (the springs) עִלִּיּ֔וֹת (upper) וְאֵ֖ת (and) גֻּלֹּ֥ת (the springs) תַּחְתִּיּֽוֹת׃פ (lower).

The Cities of Judah

20  זֹ֗את (This was) נַחֲלַ֛ת (the inheritance) מַטֵּ֥ה (of the tribe) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ (by their clans). 21  וַיִּֽהְי֣וּ (And were) הֶעָרִ֗ים (the cities) מִקְצֵה֙ (at the limits) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (of the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) אֶל־ (toward) גְּב֥וּל (the border) אֱד֖וֹם (of Edom) בַּנֶּ֑גְבָּה (in the Negev):

קַבְצְאֵ֥ל (Kabzeel), וְעֵ֖דֶר (and Eder), וְיָגֽוּר׃ (and Jagur), 22  וְקִינָ֥ה (and Kinah), וְדִֽימוֹנָ֖ה (and Dimonah), וְעַדְעָדָֽה׃ (and Adadah), 23  וְקֶ֥דֶשׁ (and Kedesh), וְחָצ֖וֹר (and Hazor), וְיִתְנָֽן׃ (and Ithnan), 24  זִ֥יף (Ziph), וָטֶ֖לֶם (and Telem), וּבְעָלֽוֹת׃ (and Bealoth), 25  וְחָצ֤וֹר׀ (and Hazor-) חֲדַתָּה֙ (hadattah), וּקְרִיּ֔וֹת (and Kerioth-), חֶצְר֖וֹן (hezron), הִ֥יא (it is) חָצֽוֹר׃ (Hazor)), 26  אֲמָ֥ם (Amam), וּשְׁמַ֖ע (and Shema), וּמוֹלָדָֽה׃ (and Moladah), 27  וַחֲצַ֥ר (and Hazar-) גַּדָּ֛ה (gaddah), וְחֶשְׁמ֖וֹן (and Heshmon), וּבֵ֥ית (and Beth-) פָּֽלֶט׃ (and pelet), 28  וַחֲצַ֥ר (and Hazar-) שׁוּעָ֛ל (shual), וּבְאֵ֥ר (and Beer-) שֶׁ֖בַע (sheba), וּבִזְיוֹתְיָֽה׃ (and Biziothiah), 29  בַּעֲלָ֥ה (Baalah), וְעִיִּ֖ים (and Ijim), וָעָֽצֶם׃ (and Ezem), 30  וְאֶלְתּוֹלַ֥ד (and Eltolad), וּכְסִ֖יל (and Chesil), וְחָרְמָֽה׃ (and Hormah), 31  וְצִֽקְלַ֥ג (and Ziklag), וּמַדְמַנָּ֖ה (and Madmannah), וְסַנְסַנָּֽה׃ (and Sansannah), 32  וּלְבָא֥וֹת (and Lebaoth), וְשִׁלְחִ֖ים (and Shilhim), וְעַ֣יִן (and Ain), וְרִמּ֑וֹן (and Rimmon)— כָּל־ (all) עָרִ֛ים (the cities are) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וָתֵ֖שַׁע (and nine), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ס (and their villages).

33  בַּשְּׁפֵלָ֑ה (In the Shephelah):

אֶשְׁתָּא֥וֹל (Eshtaol), וְצָרְעָ֖ה (and Zorah), וְאַשְׁנָֽה׃ (and Ashnah), 34  וְזָנ֙וֹחַ֙ (and Zanoah), וְעֵ֣ין (and En-) גַּנִּ֔ים (gannim), תַּפּ֖וּחַ (Tappuah), וְהָעֵינָֽם׃ (and Enam), 35  יַרְמוּת֙ (Jarmuth), וַעֲדֻלָּ֔ם (and Adullam), שׂוֹכֹ֖ה (Sochoh), וַעֲזֵקָֽה׃ (and Azekah), 36  וְשַׁעֲרַ֙יִם֙ (and Shaaraim), וַעֲדִיתַ֔יִם (and Adithaim), וְהַגְּדֵרָ֖ה (and Gederah), וּגְדֵרֹתָ֑יִם (and Gederothaim)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) אַרְבַּֽע־ (four) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

37  צְנָ֥ן (ZEnan), וַחֲדָשָׁ֖ה (and Hadashah), וּמִגְדַּל־ (and Migdal-) גָּֽד׃ (gad), 38  וְדִלְעָ֥ן (and Dilean), וְהַמִּצְפֶּ֖ה (and Mizpeh), וְיָקְתְאֵֽל׃ (and Joktheel), 39  לָכִ֥ישׁ (Lachish), וּבָצְקַ֖ת (and Bozkath), וְעֶגְלֽוֹן׃ (and Eglon), 40  וְכַבּ֥וֹן (and Cabbon), וְלַחְמָ֖ס (and Lahmas), וְכִתְלִֽישׁ׃ (and Kithlish), 41  וּגְדֵר֕וֹת (and Gederoth), בֵּית־ (in Beth-) דָּג֥וֹן (dagon), וְנַעֲמָ֖ה (and Naamah), וּמַקֵּדָ֑ה (and Makkedah)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) שֵׁשׁ־ (six) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ס (and their villages).

42  לִבְנָ֥ה (Libnah), וָעֶ֖תֶר (and Ether), וְעָשָֽׁן׃ (and Ashan), 43  וְיִפְתָּ֥ח (and Jiphtah), וְאַשְׁנָ֖ה (and Ashnah), וּנְצִֽיב׃ (and Nezib), 44  וּקְעִילָ֥ה (and Keilah), וְאַכְזִ֖יב (and Achzib), וּמָֽרֵאשָׁ֑ה (and Mareshah)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) תֵּ֖שַׁע (nine), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

45  עֶקְר֥וֹן (Ekron), וּבְנֹתֶ֖יהָ (and its daughters) וַחֲצֵרֶֽיהָ׃ (and its villages); 46  מֵעֶקְר֖וֹן (from Ekron) וָיָ֑מָּה (and to the sea), כֹּ֛ל (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עַל־ (is by) יַ֥ד (the side) אַשְׁדּ֖וֹד (of Ashdod), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages). 47  אַשְׁדּ֞וֹד (Ashdod) בְּנוֹתֶ֣יהָ (with its daughters) וַחֲצֵרֶ֗יהָ (and its villages), עַזָּ֥ה (Gaza) בְּנוֹתֶ֥יהָ (with its daughters) וַחֲצֵרֶ֖יהָ (and its villages), עַד־ (as far as) נַ֣חַל (the Brook) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt) וְהַיָּ֥ם (and the Sea) הַגָּבוֹל (Great), וּגְבֽוּל׃ס (and its coastline).

48  וּבָהָ֑ר (And in the hill country):

שָׁמִ֥יר (Shamir), וְיַתִּ֖יר (and Jattir), וְשׂוֹכֹֽה׃ (and Socoh), 49  וְדַנָּ֥ה (and Dannah), וְקִרְיַת־ (and Kiriath-) סַנָּ֖ה (sannah), הִ֥יא (that is) דְבִֽר׃ (Debir)), 50  וַעֲנָ֥ב (and Anab), וְאֶשְׁתְּמֹ֖ה (and Eshtemoh), וְעָנִֽים׃ (and Anim), 51  וְגֹ֥שֶׁן (and Goshen), וְחֹלֹ֖ן (and Holon), וְגִלֹ֑ה (and Giloh)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) אַֽחַת־ (one) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

52  אֲרַ֥ב (Arab), וְרוּמָ֖ה (and Dumah), וְאֶשְׁעָֽן׃ (and Eshean), 53  וְיָנִים (and Janum), וּבֵית־ (and Beth-) תַּפּ֖וּחַ (and tappuah), וַאֲפֵֽקָה׃ (and Aphekah), 54  וְחֻמְטָ֗ה (and Humtah), וְקִרְיַ֥ת (and Kiriath-) אַרְבַּ֛ע (and arba), הִ֥יא (that is) חֶבְר֖וֹן (Hebron), וְצִיעֹ֑ר (and Zior)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) תֵּ֖שַׁע (nine), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ס (and their villages).

55  מָע֥וֹן׀ (Maon), כַּרְמֶ֖ל (Carmel), וָזִ֥יף (and Ziph), וְיוּטָּֽה׃ (and Juttah), 56  וְיִזְרְעֶ֥אל (and Jezreel), וְיָקְדְעָ֖ם (and Jokdeam), וְזָנֽוֹחַ׃ (and Zanoah), 57  הַקַּ֖יִן (Kain), גִּבְעָ֣ה (Gibeah), וְתִמְנָ֑ה (and Timnah)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) עֶ֖שֶׂר (ten), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

58  חַלְח֥וּל (Halhul), בֵּֽית־ (in Beth-) צ֖וּר (zur), וּגְדֽוֹר׃ (and Gedor), 59  וּמַעֲרָ֥ת (and Maarath), וּבֵית־ (and Beth-) עֲנ֖וֹת (and anoth), וְאֶלְתְּקֹ֑ן (and Eltekon)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) שֵׁ֖שׁ (six), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

60  קִרְיַת־ (Kiriath-) בַּ֗עַל (baal), הִ֛יא (that is) קִרְיַ֥ת (Kiriath-) יְעָרִ֖ים (jearim), וְהָֽרַבָּ֑ה (and Rabbah)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) שְׁתַּ֖יִם (two), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ס (and their villages).

61  בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (In the wilderness),

בֵּ֚ית (Beth-) הָעֲרָבָ֔ה (arabah), מִדִּ֖ין (Middin), וּסְכָכָֽה׃ (and Secacah), 62  וְהַנִּבְשָׁ֥ן (and Nibshan), וְעִיר־ (and the City) הַמֶּ֖לַח (of Salt), וְעֵ֣ין (and En-) גֶּ֑דִי (gedi)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) שֵׁ֖שׁ (six), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

63  וְאֶת־ (And as for) הַיְבוּסִי֙ (the Jebusite), יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (of Jerusalem), לֹֽא־ (not) יוּכְלוּ (could) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) לְהֽוֹרִישָׁ֑ם (drive them out), וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב (and dwell) הַיְבוּסִ֜י (the Jebusite) אֶת־ (with) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (in Jerusalem) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃פ (this).
