Judgment on the Ammonites

1  לִבְנֵ֣י (Concerning the sons)? עַמּ֗וֹן (Of Ammon) כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);

הֲבָנִ֥ים (sons) אֵין֙ (are there not) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (for Israel)

אִם־ (or) יוֹרֵ֖שׁ (one inheriting)? אֵ֣ין (Is there not) ל֑וֹ (for him)

מַדּ֗וּעַ (why then) יָרַ֤שׁ (does take the inheritance) מַלְכָּם֙ (Milcom) אֶת־ (-) גָּ֔ד (of Gad),

וְעַמּ֖וֹ (and his people) בְּעָרָ֥יו (in his cities) יָשָֽׁב׃ (dwell)?

2  לָכֵ֡ן (Therefore), הִנֵּה֩ (behold), יָמִ֨ים (the days) בָּאִ֜ים (are coming),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH),

וְ֠הִשְׁמַעְתִּי (when I will make heard) אֶל־ (against) רַבַּ֨ת (Rabbah) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֜וֹן (of Ammon)

תְּרוּעַ֣ת (a shout) מִלְחָמָ֗ה (of war)

וְהָֽיְתָה֙ (and it will become) לְתֵ֣ל (as a mound), שְׁמָמָ֔ה (of desolation)

וּבְנֹתֶ֖יהָ (and her villages) בָּאֵ֣שׁ (with fire). תִּצַּ֑תְנָה (Will be burned)

וְיָרַ֧שׁ (and will take possession) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) אֶת־ (-) יֹרְשָׁ֖יו (of his inheritance),

אָמַ֥ר (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

3  הֵילִ֨ילִי (Wail), חֶשְׁבּ֜וֹן (O Heshbon), כִּ֣י (for) שֻׁדְּדָה־ (has been laid waste)! עַ֗י (Ai)

צְעַקְנָה֮ (Cry), בְּנ֣וֹת (O daughters) רַבָּה֒ (of Rabbah),

חֲגֹ֣רְנָה (and gird yourselves) שַׂקִּ֔ים (with sackcloth);

סְפֹ֕דְנָה (lament), וְהִתְשׁוֹטַ֖טְנָה (and roam about) בַּגְּדֵר֑וֹת (by the walls);

כִּ֤י (for) מַלְכָּם֙ (Milcom) בַּגּוֹלָ֣ה (into captivity), יֵלֵ֔ךְ (will go)

כֹּהֲנָ֥יו (his priests) וְשָׂרָ֖יו (and his princes) יַחְדָּֽיו׃ (together).

4  מַה־ (Why) תִּתְהַֽלְלִי֙ (do you boast) בָּֽעֲמָקִ֔ים (in the valleys),

זָ֣ב (the flowing of) עִמְקֵ֔ךְ (your valley),

הַבַּ֖ת (O daughter)? הַשּֽׁוֹבֵבָ֑ה (Backsliding)

הַבֹּֽטְחָה֙ (the one trusting) בְּאֹ֣צְרֹתֶ֔יהָ (in her treasures),

מִ֖י (Who) יָב֥וֹא (will come) אֵלָֽי׃ (against me).

5  הִנְנִי֩ (Behold, I) מֵבִ֨יא (am bringing) עָלַ֜יִךְ (upon you) פַּ֗חַד (terror)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֧י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֛ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts),

מִכָּל־ (before the face) סְבִיבָ֑יִךְ (of those around you)

וְנִדַּחְתֶּם֙ (and you⁺ will be driven out) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) לְפָנָ֔יו (before his face);

וְאֵ֥ין (and none) מְקַבֵּ֖ץ (shall gather up) לַנֹּדֵֽד׃ (those wandering).

6  וְאַחֲרֵי־ (And after) כֵ֗ן (this) אָשִׁ֛יב (I will turn back back) אֶת־ (-) שְׁב֥וּת (the captivity) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֖וֹן (of Ammon),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

Judgment on Edom
(Obadiah 1:1–14)

7  לֶאֱד֗וֹם (Concerning Edom), כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts);

הַאֵ֥ין (Is there no) ע֛וֹד (longer any) חָכְמָ֖ה (wisdom) בְּתֵימָ֑ן (in Teman)?

אָבְדָ֤ה (Has perished) עֵצָה֙ (counsel) מִבָּנִ֔ים (from the prudent)?

נִסְרְחָ֖ה (Has vanished) חָכְמָתָֽם׃ (their wisdom)?

8  נֻ֤סוּ (Flee) הָפְנוּ֙ (turn back),

הֶעְמִ֣יקוּ (and go deep), לָשֶׁ֔בֶת (to dwell) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (O dwellers) דְּדָ֑ן (of Dedan);

כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֥יד (the calamity) עֵשָׂ֛ו (of Esau) הֵבֵ֥אתִי (I will bring) עָלָ֖יו (upon him)

עֵ֥ת (the time) פְּקַדְתִּֽיו׃ (I will visit punishment on him).

9  אִם־ (If) בֹּֽצְרִים֙ (grape-gatherers) בָּ֣אוּ (came) לָ֔ךְ (to you)

לֹ֥א (not) יַשְׁאִ֖רוּ (would they leave) עֽוֹלֵל֑וֹת (gleanings)?

אִם־ (If) גַּנָּבִ֥ים (thieves) בַּלַּ֖יְלָה (in the night),

הִשְׁחִ֥יתוּ (would they not destroy) דַיָּֽם׃ (their sufficiency).

10  כִּֽי־ (But) אֲנִ֞י (I) חָשַׂ֣פְתִּי (will strip bare), אֶת־ (-) עֵשָׂ֗ו (Esau)

גִּלֵּ֙יתִי֙ (I will uncover) אֶת־ (-) מִסְתָּרָ֔יו (his secret places),

וְנֶחְבָּ֖ה (and to hide himself); לֹ֣א (not) יוּכָ֑ל (will he be able)

שֻׁדַּ֥ד (is destroyed), זַרְע֛וֹ (his seed)

וְאֶחָ֥יו (and His brothers), וּשְׁכֵנָ֖יו (and his neighbors),

וְאֵינֶֽנּוּ׃ (and he is no more).

11  עָזְבָ֥ה (Leave behind) יְתֹמֶ֖יךָ (your fatherless), אֲנִ֣י (I myself) אֲחַיֶּ֑ה (will keep them alive);

וְאַלְמְנֹתֶ֖יךָ (and your widows) עָלַ֥י (in Me) תִּבְטָֽחוּ׃ס (let trust).

12  כִּי־ (For) כֹ֣ה׀ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH); הִ֠נֵּה (Behold), אֲשֶׁר־ (those whose) אֵ֨ין (was not) מִשְׁפָּטָ֜ם (judgment) לִשְׁתּ֤וֹת (to drink) הַכּוֹס֙ (of the cup) שָׁת֣וֹ (drinking) יִשְׁתּ֔וּ (must drink it); וְאַתָּ֣ה (and you) ה֔וּא (as one) נָקֹ֖ה (being cleared) תִּנָּקֶ֑ה (will you be cleared)? לֹ֣א (Not) תִנָּקֶ֔ה (will you be cleared of guilt), כִּ֥י (but) שָׁתֹ֖ה (drinking) תִּשְׁתֶּֽה׃ (you must drink it). 13  כִּ֣י (For) בִ֤י (by Myself) נִשְׁבַּ֙עְתִּי֙ (I have sworn) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), כִּֽי־ (That) לְשַׁמָּ֧ה (as a desolation), לְחֶרְפָּ֛ה (as a reproach), לְחֹ֥רֶב (as a ruin), וְלִקְלָלָ֖ה (and as a curse); תִּֽהְיֶ֣ה (will become) בָצְרָ֑ה (Bozrah) וְכָל־ (and all) עָרֶ֥יהָ (her cities) תִהְיֶ֖ינָה (will be) לְחָרְב֥וֹת (as ruins) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

14  שְׁמוּעָ֤ה (News to be heard) שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ (have I heard) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH),

וְצִ֖יר (and an envoy) בַּגּוֹיִ֣ם (among the nations), שָׁל֑וּחַ (has been sent)

הִֽתְקַבְּצוּ֙ (Assemble yourselves), וּבֹ֣אוּ (and come) עָלֶ֔יהָ (against her)

וְק֖וּמוּ (and rise up) לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (for the battle).

15  כִּֽי־ (For), הִנֵּ֥ה (behold), קָטֹ֛ן (small) נְתַתִּ֖יךָ (I will make you) בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם (among the nations),

בָּז֖וּי (and despised) בָּאָדָֽם׃ (among mankind).

16  תִּֽפְלַצְתְּךָ֞ (Your terror)

הִשִּׁ֤יא (has deceived) אֹתָךְ֙ (you)

זְד֣וֹן (the arrogance) לִבֶּ֔ךָ (of your heart),

שֹֽׁכְנִי֙ (O dwellers) בְּחַגְוֵ֣י (in the clefts) הַסֶּ֔לַע (of the rock),

תֹּפְשִׂ֖י (holding) מְר֣וֹם (the height) גִּבְעָ֑ה (of the hill).

כִּֽי־ (Though) תַגְבִּ֤יהַ (you make high) כַּנֶּ֙שֶׁר֙ (like the eagle), קִנֶּ֔ךָ (your nest)

מִשָּׁ֥ם (from there), אֽוֹרִידְךָ֖ (I will bring you down)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

17  וְהָיְתָ֥ה (And will become) אֱד֖וֹם (Edom) לְשַׁמָּ֑ה (as a horror);

כֹּ֚ל (all) עֹבֵ֣ר (passing) עָלֶ֔יהָ (by it) יִשֹּׁ֥ם (will be appalled),

וְיִשְׁרֹ֖ק (and will hiss) עַל־ (at) כָּל־ (all) מַכּוֹתֶֽהָ׃ (her wounds).

18  כְּֽמַהְפֵּכַ֞ת (Like the overthrow) סְדֹ֧ם (of Sodom) וַעֲמֹרָ֛ה (and Gomorrah)

וּשְׁכֵנֶ֖יהָ (and their neighbors)

אָמַ֣ר (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

לֹֽא־ (Not) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (will dwell) שָׁם֙ (there), אִ֔ישׁ (man)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָג֥וּר (will reside) בָּ֖הּ (in it) בֶּן־ (a son) אָדָֽם׃ (of man).

19  הִ֠נֵּה (Behold), כְּאַרְיֵ֞ה (like a lion) יַעֲלֶ֨ה (he will come up)

מִגְּא֣וֹן (from the height) הַיַּרְדֵּן֮ (of the Jordan) אֶל־ (against) נְוֵ֣ה (the habitation) אֵיתָן֒ (enduring);

כִּֽי־ (but) אַרְגִּ֤יעָה (I will act in an instant) אֲרִיצֶ֨נּוּ (and make him run away) מֵֽעָלֶ֔יהָ (from her)

וּמִ֥י (and who is) בָח֖וּר (the chosen one) אֵלֶ֣יהָ (over her) אֶפְקֹ֑ד (that I may assign)

כִּ֣י (for) מִ֤י (who is) כָמ֙וֹנִי֙ (like Me)? וּמִ֣י (And who) יֹעִידֶ֔נִּי (would appoint Me)

וּמִי־ (and who is) זֶ֣ה (this) רֹעֶ֔ה (shepherd) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יַעֲמֹ֖ד (can stand) לְפָנָֽי׃ס (before My face).

20  לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) שִׁמְע֣וּ (hear) עֲצַת־ (the counsel)

יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יָעַץ֙ (He has counseled) אֶל־ (regarding) אֱד֔וֹם (Edom);

וּמַ֨חְשְׁבוֹתָ֔יו (and His plans), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) חָשַׁ֖ב (He has planned)

אֶל־ (regarding) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) תֵימָ֑ן (of Teman);

אִם־ (surely) לֹ֤א (not) יִסְחָבוּם֙ (they will drag them out); צְעִירֵ֣י (even the little ones) הַצֹּ֔אן (of the flock)

אִם־ (surely) לֹ֥א (not) יַשִּׁ֛ים (will be appalled) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over them) נְוֵהֶֽם׃ (their own pastures).

21  מִקּ֣וֹל (At the sound) נִפְלָ֔ם (of their fall), רָעֲשָׁ֖ה (shakes) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth)

צְעָקָ֕ה (the cry) בְּיַם־ (at the Sea). ס֖וּף (Of Reeds) נִשְׁמַ֥ע (is heard) קוֹלָֽהּ׃ (its voice).

22  הִנֵּ֤ה (Behold), כַנֶּ֙שֶׁר֙ (like the eagle), יַעֲלֶ֣ה (he will come up) וְיִדְאֶ֔ה (and fly)

וְיִפְרֹ֥שׂ (and he will spread) כְּנָפָ֖יו (his wings) עַל־ (over) בָּצְרָ֑ה (Bozrah);

וְֽ֠הָיָה (and will be) לֵ֞ב (the heart) גִּבּוֹרֵ֤י (of the mighty ones) אֱדוֹם֙ (of Edom) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֔וּא (that)

כְּלֵ֖ב (like the heart) אִשָּׁ֥ה (of a woman) מְצֵרָֽה׃ס (in labor).

Judgment on Damascus
(Isaiah 17:1–14)

23  לְדַמֶּ֗שֶׂק (Concerning Damascus).

בּ֤וֹשָֽׁה (Are put to shame), חֲמָת֙ (Hamath) וְאַרְפָּ֔ד (and Arpad);

כִּי־ (for) שְׁמֻעָ֥ה (news); רָעָ֛ה (bad) שָׁמְע֖וּ (they have heard)

נָמֹ֑גוּ (they melt); בַּיָּ֣ם (into the sea);

דְּאָגָ֔ה (with anxiety) הַשְׁקֵ֖ט (to be calmed) לֹ֥א (not) יוּכָֽל׃ (able).

24  רָפְתָ֥ה (Has grown feeble), דַמֶּ֛שֶׂק (Damascus)

הִפְנְתָ֥ה (she turns) לָנ֖וּס (to flee),

וְרֶ֣טֶט׀ (and fear) הֶחֱזִ֑יקָה (has seizes her)

צָרָ֧ה (distress) וַחֲבָלִ֛ים (and sorrows) אֲחָזַ֖תָּה (have taken hold of her)

כַּיּוֹלֵדָֽה׃ (like a woman in labor).

25  אֵ֥יךְ (How) לֹֽא־ (not) עֻזְּבָ֖ה (is it abandoned),

עִ֣יר (the city) תְּהִלָּה (of praise) קִרְיַ֖ת (the city) מְשׂוֹשִֽׂי׃ (of My joy)!

26  לָכֵ֛ן (Therefore) יִפְּל֥וּ (will fall) בַחוּרֶ֖יהָ (her young men) בִּרְחֹבֹתֶ֑יהָ (in her streets),

וְכָל־ (and all) אַנְשֵׁ֨י (the men) הַמִּלְחָמָ֤ה (of war) יִדַּ֙מּוּ֙ (will be cut off) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day), הַה֔וּא (that)

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (Hosts).

27  וְהִצַּ֥תִּי (And I will kindle) אֵ֖שׁ (a fire) בְּחוֹמַ֣ת (in the wall) דַּמָּ֑שֶׂק (of Damascus),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will consume) אַרְמְנ֥וֹת (the citadels) בֶּן־ (of Ben-) הֲדָֽד׃ס (Hadad).

Judgment on Kedar and Hazor

28  לְקֵדָ֣ר׀ (Concerning Kedar), וּֽלְמַמְלְכ֣וֹת (and concerning the kingdoms) חָצ֗וֹר (of Hazor), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) הִכָּה֙ (struck), נְבוּכַדְרֶאצּוֹר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon) כֹּ֖ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH);

ק֚וּמוּ (Arise) עֲל֣וּ (and go up) אֶל־ (to) קֵדָ֔ר (Kedar),

וְשָׁדְד֖וּ (and destroy) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (the men) קֶֽדֶם׃ (of the east).

29  אָהֳלֵיהֶ֤ם (Their tents) וְצֹאנָם֙ (and their flocks) יִקָּ֔חוּ (they will take away);

יְרִיעוֹתֵיהֶ֧ם (their curtains), וְכָל־ (and all) כְּלֵיהֶ֛ם (their vessels),

וּגְמַלֵּיהֶ֖ם (and their camels); יִשְׂא֣וּ (they will carry off) לָהֶ֑ם (for themselves)

וְקָרְא֧וּ (and they will cry out) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (over them) מָג֖וֹר (Terror) מִסָּבִֽיב׃ (is on every side).

30  נֻסוּ֩ (Flee), נֻּ֨דוּ (wander) מְאֹ֜ד (far away),

הֶעְמִ֧יקוּ (go deep) לָשֶׁ֛בֶת (to dwell), יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (O dwellers) חָצ֖וֹר (of Hazor),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH);

כִּֽי־ (For) יָעַ֨ץ (he has taken counsel) עֲלֵיכֶ֜ם (against you⁺)

נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֤ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶל֙ (of Babylon)

עֵצָ֔ה (counsel) וְחָשַׁ֥ב (and he has planned) עֲלֵיהֶם (against you⁺) מַחֲשָׁבָֽה׃ (a purpose).

31  ק֣וּמוּ (Arise), עֲל֗וּ (go up) אֶל־ (against) גּ֥וֹי (a nation), שְׁלֵ֛יו (at ease)

יוֹשֵׁ֥ב (Dwelling) לָבֶ֖טַח (in safety),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

לֹא־ (No) דְלָתַ֧יִם (gates) וְלֹֽא־ (and no) בְרִ֛יחַ (bars), ל֖וֹ (are unto it)

בָּדָ֥ד (alone) יִשְׁכֹּֽנוּ׃ (they dwell).

32  וְהָי֨וּ (And will be) גְמַלֵּיהֶ֜ם (their camels) לָבַ֗ז (for spoil),

וַהֲמ֤וֹן (and the multitude) מִקְנֵיהֶם֙ (of their cattle) לְשָׁלָ֔ל (for plunder),

וְזֵרִתִ֥ים (and I will scatter) לְכָל־ (to every) ר֖וּחַ (wind)

קְצוּצֵ֣י (those cutting) פֵאָ֑ה (the corner);

וּמִכָּל־ (and from all) עֲבָרָ֛יו (its sides) אָבִ֥יא (I will bring)

אֶת־ (-) אֵידָ֖ם (their calamity)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

33  וְהָיְתָ֨ה (And will become) חָצ֜וֹר (Hazor) לִמְע֥וֹן (as an abode) תַּנִּ֛ים (for jackals),

שְׁמָמָ֖ה (a desolation) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֑ם (forever);

לֹֽא־ (no) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (will dwell) שָׁם֙ (there), אִ֔ישׁ (man)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָג֥וּר (will sojourn) בָּ֖הּ (in it) בֶּן־ (a son) אָדָֽם׃ס (of man).

Judgment on Elam

34  אֲשֶׁ֨ר (When) הָיָ֧ה (came to be) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) אֶל־ (regarding) עֵילָ֑ם (Elam) בְּרֵאשִׁ֗ית (in the beginning) מַלְכ֛וּת (of the reign) צִדְקִיָּ֥ה (of Zedekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 35  כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts);

הִנְנִ֥י (Behold, I) שֹׁבֵ֖ר (am going to break) אֶת־ (-) קֶ֣שֶׁת (the bow) עֵילָ֑ם (of Elam),

רֵאשִׁ֖ית (the foremost) גְּבוּרָתָֽם׃ (of their might).

36  וְהֵבֵאתִ֨י (And I will bring) אֶל־ (against) עֵילָ֜ם (Elam) אַרְבַּ֣ע (the four) רוּח֗וֹת (winds)

מֵֽאַרְבַּע֙ (from the four) קְצ֣וֹת (corners) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens),

וְזֵ֣רִתִ֔ים (and I will scatter them)

לְכֹ֖ל (to all) הָרֻח֣וֹת (the winds); הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִהְיֶ֣ה (there will be) הַגּ֔וֹי (nations)

אֲשֶׁ֛ר (to which) לֹֽא־ (not) יָב֥וֹא (will go). שָׁ֖ם (There) נִדְּחֵ֥י (those driven out) עוֹלָם׃ (of Elam).

37  וְהַחְתַּתִּ֣י (And I will shatter) אֶת־ (-) עֵ֠ילָם (Elam) לִפְנֵ֨י (before the face) אֹיְבֵיהֶ֜ם (of their enemies),

וְלִפְנֵ֣י׀ (and before) מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י (those seeking) נַפְשָׁ֗ם (their soul);

וְהֵבֵאתִ֨י (and I will bring) עֲלֵיהֶ֧ם׀ (upon them) רָעָ֛ה (disaster) אֶת־ (-)

חֲר֥וֹן (the burning) אַפִּ֖י (of My anger),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH);

וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י (And I will send) אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ (after them) אֶת־ (-) הַחֶ֔רֶב (the sword)

עַ֥ד (until) כַּלּוֹתִ֖י (I have finished) אוֹתָֽם׃ (them).

38  וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י (And I will set) כִסְאִ֖י (My throne) בְּעֵילָ֑ם (in Elam),

וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֥י (and I will destroy) מִשָּׁ֛ם (from there) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) וְשָׂרִ֖ים (and the princes),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

39  וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (And it will come to pass) בְּאַחֲרִ֣ית (in the latter) הַיָּמִ֗ים (days),
