1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.

1After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.

2“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”

2But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.

3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.

3And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

4Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked.

4And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?

5“It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.

5For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

6But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?

6And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.

7 You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.

7For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

8 She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.

8She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

9 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

9Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them.

10And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.

11They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. The Last Supper

11And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”

12And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?

13So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.

13And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.

14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’

14And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”

15And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.

16So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.

16And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

17In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve.

17And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.

18As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”

18And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.

19Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”

19And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?

20He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.

20And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.

21 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”

21The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”

22And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

23And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.

24And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”

25Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

26And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

27On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

27And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.

28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”

28But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

29Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.”

29But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

30Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.”

30And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

31“No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

31But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

32They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.”

32And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.

33And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

34He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

34And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.

35And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

36And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?

37And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

38 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

38Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

39Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.

39And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.

40When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say.

40And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

41When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

41And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!” Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

42Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.

43And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.”

44And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.

45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.

45And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

46Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.

46And they laid their hands on him, and took him.

47But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.

47And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?

48And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?

49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”

49I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.

50Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away.

50And they all forsook him, and fled.

51One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,

51And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:

52he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked. Jesus before the Council

52And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

53They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.

53And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.

54And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any.

55And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.

56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.

56For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.

57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony:

57And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,

58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’”

58We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

59But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!

59But neither so did their witness agree together.

60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”

60And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

61But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

62Jesus said, “ I Am . And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. ”

62And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses?

63Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?

64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!”

64Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away. Peter Denies Jesus

65And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.

66Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by

66And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:

67and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth. ”

67And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

68But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.

68But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!”

69And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.

70But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.”

70And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

71Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

71But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.

72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.

72And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
