| 1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. | 1Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him; |
| 2“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.” | 2for they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people." |
| 3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head. | 3While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head. |
| 4Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. | 4But some were indignantly remarking to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted? |
| 5“It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly. | 5"For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her. |
| 6But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? | 6But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me. |
| 7 You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me. | 7"For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. |
| 8 She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time. | 8"She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. |
| 9 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus | 9"Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her." |
| 10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them. | 10Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them. |
| 11They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. | 13So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. | 13And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him; |
| 14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ | 14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"' |
| 15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” | 15"And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there." |
| 16So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there. | 16The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. |
| 17In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve. | 17When it was evening He came with the twelve. |
| 18As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.” | 18As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me-- one who is eating with Me." |
| 19Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?” | 19They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, "Surely not I?" |
| 20He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me. | 20And He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl. |
| 21 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!” | 21"For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." |
| 22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.” | 22While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body." |
| 23And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. | 23And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. |
| 24And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many. | 24And He said to them, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. |
| 25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.” | 25"Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." |
| 26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial | 26After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. |
| 27On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ | 27And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, because it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED.' |
| 28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.” | 28"But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee." |
| 29Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.” | 29But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away, yet I will not." |
| 30Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” | 30And Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you, that this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times." |
| 31“No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane | 31But Peter kept saying insistently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all were saying the same thing also. |
| 32They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.” | 32They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed." |
| 33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed. | 33And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled. |
| 34He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” | 34And He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch." |
| 35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. | 35And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. |
| 36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” | 36And He was saying, "Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will." |
| 37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? | 37And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? |
| 38 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” | 38"Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." |
| 39Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before. | 39Again He went away and prayed, saying the same words. |
| 40When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say. | 40And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. |
| 41When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. | 41And He came the third time, and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. |
| 42 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!” Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested | 42"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!" |
| 43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders. | 43Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. |
| 44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.” | 44Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away under guard." |
| 45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss. | 45After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, "Rabbi!" and kissed Him. |
| 46Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. | 46They laid hands on Him and seized Him. |
| 47But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear. | 47But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. |
| 48Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? | 48And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? |
| 49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.” | 49"Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures." |
| 50Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away. | 50And they all left Him and fled. |
| 51One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him, | 51A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him. |
| 52he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked. Jesus before the Council | 52But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked. |
| 53They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered. | 53They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together. |
| 54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire. | 54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire. |
| 55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any. | 55Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. |
| 56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other. | 56For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. |
| 57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony: | 57Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, |
| 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’” | 58"We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'" |
| 59But even then they didn’t get their stories straight! | 59Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. |
| 60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” | 60The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?" |
| 61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” | 61But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" |
| 62Jesus said, “ I Am . And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. ” | 62And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." |
| 63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses? | 63Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? |
| 64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!” | 64"You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. |
| 65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away. Peter Denies Jesus | 65Some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!" And the officers received Him with slaps in the face. |
| 66Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by | 66As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came, |
| 67and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth. ” | 67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene." |
| 68But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed. | 68But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he went out onto the porch, and a rooster crowed. |
| 69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!” | 69The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!" |
| 70But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.” | 70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean too." |
| 71Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know this man you’re talking about!” | 71But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about!" |
| 72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept. | 72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And he began to weep. |
