1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded, Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 “Does a wise man answer with empty counsel or fill his belly with the hot east wind? “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind? “Would a wise person answer with empty notions or fill their belly with the hot east wind?
3 Should he argue with useless words or speeches that serve no purpose? Should he argue in unprofitable talk, or in words with which he can do no good? Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? “Should he argue with useless talk, Or with words which do not benefit? Would they argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value?
4 But you even undermine the fear of God and hinder meditation before Him. But you are doing away with the fear of God and hindering meditation before God. Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God. “Indeed, you do away with reverence, And hinder meditation before God. But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God.
5 For your iniquity instructs your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty. For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. “For your wrongdoing teaches your mouth, And you choose the language of the cunning. Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty.
6 Your own mouth, not mine, condemns you; your own lips testify against you. Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips testify against you. Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee. “Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; And your own lips testify against you. 7 Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? “Are you the first man who was born? Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?
9 What do you know that we do not? What do you understand that is not clear to us? What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? What knowest thou, that we know not? <i>what</i> understandest thou, which <i>is</i> not in us? “What do you know that we do not know? <i>What</i> do you understand that we do not? What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have?
10 Both the gray-haired and the aged are on our side— men much older than your father. Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us, older than your father. 11 Are the consolations of God not enough for you, even words spoken gently to you? Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you? <i>Are</i> the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee? “Are the consolations of God too little for you, Or the word <i>spoken</i> gently to you? Are God’s consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you?
12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, Why does your heart carry you away, and why do your eyes flash, Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at, “Why does your heart take you away? And why do your eyes wink, Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,
13 as you turn your spirit against God and pour such words from your mouth? that you turn your spirit against God and bring such words out of your mouth? That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest <i>such</i> words go out of thy mouth? That you can turn your spirit against God And produce <i>such</i> words from your mouth? so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous? What is man, that he can be pure? Or he who is born of a woman, that he can be righteous? What <i>is</i> man, that he should be clean? and <i>he which is</i> born of a woman, that he should be righteous? “What is man, that he would be pure, Or he who is born of a woman, that he would be righteous? “What are mortals, that they could be pure, or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?
15 If God puts no trust in His holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in His eyes, Behold, God puts no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight; Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. “Behold, He has no trust in His holy ones, And the heavens are not pure in His sight; If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,
16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water? how much less one who is abominable and corrupt, a man who drinks injustice like water! How much more abominable and filthy <i>is</i> man, which drinketh iniquity like water? How much less one who is detestable and corrupt: A person who drinks malice like water! how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water!
17 Listen to me and I will inform you. I will describe what I have seen, “I will show you; hear me, and what I have seen I will declare I will shew thee, hear me; and that <i>which</i> I have seen I will declare; “I will tell you, listen to me; And what I have seen I will also declare; “Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen,
18 what was declared by wise men and was not concealed from their fathers, (what wise men have told, without hiding it from their fathers, Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid <i>it</i>: What wise people have told, And have not concealed from their fathers, what the wise have declared, hiding nothing received from their ancestors
19 to whom alone the land was given when no foreigner passed among them. to whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them). 21 Sounds of terror fill his ears; in his prosperity the destroyer attacks him. Dreadful sounds are in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer will come upon him. A dreadful sound <i>is</i> in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. “Sounds of terror are in his ears; <i>While he is</i> at peace the destroyer comes upon him. Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him.
22 He despairs of his return from darkness; he is marked for the sword. He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword. He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. “He does not believe that he will return from darkness, And he is destined for the sword. He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness; he is marked for the sword.
23 He wanders about as food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand; He wandereth abroad for bread, <i>saying</i>, Where <i>is it</i>? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. “He wanders about for food, <i>saying,</i> ‘Where <i>is it?</i>’ He knows that a day of darkness is at hand. He wanders about for food like a vulture; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24 Distress and anguish terrify him, overwhelming him like a king poised to attack. distress and anguish terrify him; they prevail against him, like a king ready for battle. Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. “Distress and anguish terrify him, They overpower him like a king ready for the attack, Distress and anguish fill him with terror; troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,
25 For he has stretched out his hand against God and has vaunted himself against the Almighty, Because he has stretched out his hand against God and defies the Almighty, For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. Because he has reached out with his hand against God, And is arrogant toward the Almighty. because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty,
26 rushing headlong at Him with a thick, studded shield. running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield; He runneth upon him, <i>even</i> on <i>his</i> neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: “He rushes headlong at Him With his massive shield. defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.
27 Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh, because he has covered his face with his fat and gathered fat upon his waist Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on <i>his</i> flanks. “For he has covered his face with his fat, And put fat on his waist. “Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,
28 he will dwell in ruined cities, in abandoned houses destined to become rubble. and has lived in desolate cities, in houses that none should inhabit, which were ready to become heaps of ruins; And he dwelleth in desolate cities, <i>and</i> in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps. “He has lived in desolate cities, In houses no one would inhabit, Which are destined to become ruins. he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble.
29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure. His possessions will not overspread the land. he will not be rich, and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the earth; He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth. “He will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his property will not stretch out on the earth. He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land.
30 He will not escape from the darkness; the flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away. he will not depart from darkness; the flame will dry up his shoots, and by the breath of his mouth he will depart. He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. “He will not escape from darkness; The flame will dry up his shoot, And he will go away by the breath of His mouth. He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
31 Let him not deceive himself with trust in emptiness, for emptiness will be his reward. Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself, for emptiness will be his payment. Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. “Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; For his reward will be emptiness. Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return.
32 It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not flourish. It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not be green. It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green. “It will be accomplished before his time, And his palm branch will not be green. Before his time he will wither, and his branches will not flourish.
33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms. He will shake off his unripe grape like the vine, and cast off his blossom like the olive tree. He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. “He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine, And will cast off his flower like the olive tree. He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.
34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery. For the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of bribery. For the congregation of hypocrites <i>shall be</i> desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. “For the company of the godless is barren, And fire consumes the tents of the corrupt. For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.
35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb is pregnant with deceit.” They conceive trouble and give birth to evil, and their womb prepares deceit.” They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit. “They conceive harm and give birth to wrongdoing, And their mind prepares deception.” They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit.”
