Berean Study Bible Children of GodGod’s love is displayed in His initiative toward sinners, not in human worthiness. He freely gives those who believe a place within His household through Christ. 1Jn 4:9-10 This is how God’s love was revealed among us: … that we should be called children of God. Believers receive more than forgiveness; they are brought into God’s family. As His children, they belong to Him, know Him as Father, and share the inheritance secured by Christ. Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed… And that is what we are! This is a present reality, not merely a future hope or honorary title. God has truly made His people His children by His saving work. Rom 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit… The reason the world does not know us Those who live apart from God cannot fully understand the identity, allegiance, and hope of His children. Their values remain opposed to the life God gives. Jhn 17:14 I have given them Your word and the world has hated them.… is that it did not know Him. The world rejected God’s Son when He came, and it continues to resist God’s truth. Its failure to recognize believers reflects its refusal to know the Father who has made them His own. Jhn 1:10 He was in the world, and though the world… Beloved, we are now children of God, John addresses believers as those dearly loved by God and affirms their present standing in His family. Through faith in Christ, they have been adopted as God’s children, no longer separated from Him by sin but belonging to Him as Father. Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed… and what we will be has not yet been revealed. Their future glory remains partly hidden. God has revealed enough to give certain hope, but the full nature of the believer’s resurrected and glorified life awaits the completion of His saving work. Rom 8:18 I consider that our present sufferings are not… We know that when Christ appears, Christ will return openly and visibly, bringing history to its appointed conclusion and fulfilling God’s promises to His people. Tit 2:13 as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance… we will be like Him, At His appearing, believers will be completely transformed, freed from sin and conformed to Christ’s righteous and glorified humanity. Php 3:21 who, by the power that enables Him… for we will see Him as He is. They will behold the risen Lord in His unveiled glory. That direct sight of Christ will bring their transformation to completion and establish unbroken fellowship with Him. Rev 22:4 They will see His face, and His name will be… And everyone who has this hope in Him Believers who await Christ’s return and the fullness of eternal life rest their confidence in Him alone. This hope belongs to all who are united to Christ, regardless of background or standing. Tit 2:13 as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance… purifies himself, The certainty of seeing Christ produces a deliberate rejection of sin and a growing commitment to holy living. Though cleansing from sin is grounded in Christ’s saving work, believers are responsible to pursue obedience and submit to the Spirit’s sanctifying work. 2Co 7:1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises,… just as Christ is pure. Jesus is wholly sinless and morally perfect. His character is the standard toward which His people are being conformed as they await His appearing. Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize… Everyone who practices sin Sin is more than an isolated failure; it reveals a life acting contrary to God’s will. Humanity’s fallen condition is evident in the repeated choices and desires that resist His authority. Jhn 8:34 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,… practices lawlessness as well. Lawlessness is rebellion against God’s righteous rule. God gave His law to reveal His holy standard and to govern the covenant life of His people; rejecting that standard is a rejection of His authority. Mat 7:23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you;… Indeed, sin is lawlessness. Sin is fundamentally a violation of God’s law, not merely a personal weakness or social wrong. John’s definition confronts teachings that treated sinful conduct as compatible with fellowship with God. Dan 9:11 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away,… But you know that Christ appeared Believers recognize the historical reality of the Son of God entering the world in human flesh. Jesus’ birth fulfilled God’s promise to send Immanuel, and His public life revealed the Messiah anticipated throughout the Old Testament. Heb 9:26 Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly… to take away sins, Christ came to deal decisively with human sin. The sacrifices under the Law pointed to the need for atonement, but Jesus offered Himself as the final and sufficient sacrifice, securing forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Jhn 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,… and in Him there is no sin. Jesus alone lived without sin. Because He was wholly righteous, He could bear the sins of others without needing atonement for Himself. His sinlessness confirms His unique identity and His fitness to serve as the sacrifice and mediator for humanity. 1Pe 2:22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.” No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. Union with Christ produces a changed direction of life. Believers still struggle with sin, but they cannot live comfortably in deliberate, unrepentant rebellion while abiding in the One who is righteous. The Spirit’s work leads them away from sin and toward obedience. 1Jn 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning;… No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him. John confronted those who claimed fellowship with God while denying the moral demands of the gospel. Genuine knowledge of Christ is not merely a profession or religious experience; it is shown in a life increasingly shaped by His character. A settled practice of sin reveals that a person has not truly come to know Him. Jhn 14:7 If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well… Little children, John addresses believers with the care of a spiritual father, urging them to remain grounded in the truth amid influences that threatened the churches. 1Jn 2:12 I am writing to you, little children, because… let no one deceive you: False teachers claimed that a person could know God while disregarding His commands. John rejects any profession of faith that separates belief from a changed manner of life. Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words,… The one who practices righteousness is righteous, Righteous conduct does not earn salvation, but it reveals the reality of a life shaped by faith in Christ. Those who belong to God increasingly live in obedience to His will. 1Jn 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you also know… just as Christ is righteous. Jesus is the perfect pattern of righteousness. His sinless life establishes the standard toward which His people are called as they follow Him. 1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you…… The one who practices sin is of the devil, Persistent sin reflects allegiance to the devil, whose rebellion against God introduced sin into human history through his deception of Eve in the garden. This stands in contrast to those who belong to God and are being shaped by obedience to Him. Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry… because the devil has been sinning from the very start. From his rebellion against God onward, the devil has opposed God’s truth, tempted mankind, and worked to spread sin, deception, and death. Gen 3:1-6 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field… This is why the Son of God was revealed, Jesus Christ came in the flesh according to God’s plan of redemption, fulfilling the promised coming of the Savior. 1Pe 1:20 He was known before the foundation of the world… to destroy the works of the devil. Through His death and resurrection, Christ broke the power of sin and death, defeated the devil’s claims against His people, and will ultimately bring all evil under judgment. Heb 2:14-15 Now since the children have flesh and blood,… Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, Spiritual rebirth produces a new life that cannot be at peace with sin. John does not teach sinless perfection, but a decisive break with the settled, unrepentant patterns that marked life apart from Christ. 1Jn 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning;… because God’s seed abides in him; God places within His children the life and power that come from Him. His abiding presence works inwardly, forming a growing likeness to His character and exposing what is contrary to His will. 1Pe 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,… he cannot go on sinning, A believer may fall into sin, yet cannot continue comfortably in it as a chosen way of life. God’s work in the heart brings conviction, repentance, and a renewed desire for obedience. Rom 6:6-7 We know that our old self was crucified with Him… because he has been born of God. The new birth establishes a new identity: the believer belongs to God’s family. This work is God’s gift, and its reality is shown in a life increasingly shaped by righteousness. 1Jn 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ… By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Spiritual parentage is revealed by a person’s settled allegiance and conduct. God’s children bear evidence of His character, while the devil’s children follow the rebellion, falsehood, and lawlessness associated with him. The division is moral and spiritual, not based on ancestry, position, or outward profession. Mal 3:18 So you will again distinguish between the righteous… Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, Righteousness is obedience to God’s revealed will expressed in a continuing pattern of life. John does not describe occasional failure among believers, but a life marked by disregard for God’s commands. Genuine faith produces a growing commitment to what is right. 1Jn 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you also know… nor is anyone who does not love his brother. Love for fellow believers is inseparable from righteousness. It is shown through faithful, truthful, and sacrificial care, not merely words or feelings. Persistent hatred, indifference, or refusal to love exposes a life not shaped by God’s nature. Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
Love One AnotherLove for fellow believers belonged to the original apostolic proclamation and remained essential to life in Christ. It was not a later addition or optional ideal, but a settled command rooted in Jesus’ instruction to His disciples. Fidelity to the gospel includes continuing in what Christ taught from the outset. 1Jn 2:24 As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning… We should love one another. Christian love is self-giving, active, and shaped by Christ’s own love. It rejects hatred, selfishness, and indifference, calling believers to care for one another in practical ways. Such love marks those who belong to God and gives visible expression to genuine faith. Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.… Do not be like Cain, Adam and Eve’s firstborn son became the first murderer when he killed his brother Abel. His life warns against allowing jealousy, anger, and resentment to govern the heart. Jud 1:11 Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain;… who belonged to the evil one Cain followed the pattern of Satan, the murderer and adversary of God, by rejecting God’s rule and turning against his righteous brother. Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry… and murdered his brother. Cain’s hatred became a deliberate act of violence, violating the life God had given Abel and revealing the destructive course of sin. Gen 4:8 Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out… And why did Cain slay him? The question exposes the motive behind the murder rather than treating it as an isolated act. Jas 4:1-2 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?… Because his own deeds were evil, Cain’s worship and conduct were marked by unbelief and disobedience. God’s rejection of his offering revealed the condition of his heart, which Cain refused to correct. Jhn 3:19-20 And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world…… while those of his brother were righteous. Abel approached God in faith and obedience, and his accepted sacrifice testified to a life pleasing to God. Cain’s hatred arose because Abel’s righteousness exposed his own evil. Heb 11:4 By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.… So do not be surprised, brothers, Believers should expect opposition because their allegiance to Christ sets them apart from a fallen world. John addresses the church as family, reminding Christians that they share a common identity and must stand together when faithfulness brings rejection. 1Pe 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial… if the world hates you. The world represents humanity organized in rebellion against God and His truth. Its hostility toward Christians reflects its rejection of Christ, whose righteousness exposes sin. Such hatred may appear through ridicule, exclusion, discrimination, or persecution, but it does not mean that God has abandoned His people. Jhn 15:18-19 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.… We know that we have passed from death to life, Believers possess assurance that God has delivered them from spiritual death and given them eternal life through faith in Christ. This new life begins in the present and reflects union with the risen Lord, whose death and resurrection secured victory over sin and death. Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word… because we love our brothers. Love for fellow Christians provides visible evidence of this new life. It is expressed through faithful care, generosity, forgiveness, and commitment to the spiritual good of others, following Christ’s command that His disciples love one another. Jhn 13:35 By this everyone will know that you are My disciples,… The one who does not love remains in death. A settled absence of love reveals that a person has not been transformed by God’s life. Since God’s people are marked by His love, hatred, indifference, and refusal to care for fellow believers expose the continuing condition of spiritual death. 1Jn 4:20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,… Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, Hatred toward a fellow believer reveals the same sinful disposition that gives rise to murder. Jesus taught that anger and contempt expose guilt before God even when no violent act has been committed. John addresses the heart, not merely outward conduct: one who persists in hatred stands opposed to the love that marks God’s children. The command is especially urgent within the church, where believers are called to live in unity and sacrificial love. Mat 5:21-22 You have heard that it was said to the ancients,… and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer. Eternal life produces a new pattern of life that cannot coexist with settled hatred. Those who remain characterized by hatred show that they have not received or retained the life of God within them. John presents this as a known certainty: love for fellow believers is evidence of spiritual life, while hatred belongs to the darkness from which Christ saves His people. Rev 22:14-15 Blessed are those who wash their robes,… By this we know what love is: Love is revealed most clearly in the saving work of Jesus Christ. Biblical love is not mere feeling but self-giving action directed toward the good of another. 1Jn 4:10 And love consists in this: not that we loved God… Jesus laid down His life for us, Jesus willingly gave Himself in death on the cross in Jerusalem, fulfilling God’s purpose of redemption. His sacrifice was voluntary and substitutionary, bearing the penalty of sin for those He came to save. Jhn 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd… and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. Those who belong to Christ are called to show the same selfless concern for fellow believers. Though this may include the willingness to die for others, it also requires practical, costly care within the church. 1Jn 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought… If anyone with earthly possessions Material resources are entrusted by God and carry responsibility. Israel’s law included provisions for the poor, and Jesus warned against treating wealth as an end in itself. 1Ti 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in the present age… sees his brother in need, John addresses the visible needs of fellow believers, or “brothers,” though the term can extend to all people in need, within the Christian community. The early church was marked by practical care for those lacking food, clothing, or shelter. Jas 2:15-16 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes… but withholds his compassion from him, Refusing help when one has the means reveals a hard heart. God’s compassion, displayed throughout Scripture and in Christ’s ministry, is meant to shape the conduct of His people. Deu 15:9-11 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought in your heart:… how can the love of God abide in him? A profession of faith is contradicted when love remains inactive before a brother’s genuine need. God’s love produces practical concern and sacrificial action toward others. 1Jn 4:11-12 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought… Little children, John addresses believers with the affection and responsibility of a spiritual father, urging those under his care to live as members of God’s family. 1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you…… let us love not in word and speech, Love must not remain a profession of loyalty or concern while needs go unmet and obedience is neglected. Jas 2:15-16 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes… but in action and truth. Christian love is shown through sincere, sacrificial deeds that reflect God’s character and conform to His truth. Jas 2:17 So too, faith by itself, if it does not result… And by this we will know that we belong to the truth, Genuine love expressed in action gives believers confidence that their faith is real and that they belong to God. John writes to churches troubled by those who had departed from the apostolic faith and denied essential truths about Christ. Obedience to God’s command to love one another distinguishes those who remain in the truth of the gospel. Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king… and will assure our hearts in His presence: Such obedience brings confidence before God when the conscience is unsettled by awareness of sin or personal failure. This assurance rests on God’s saving work in His children, producing a life marked by faith, righteousness, and love. Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a sincere heart… Even if our hearts condemn us, Believers may be troubled by real sin, lingering guilt, or a conscience that condemns them more harshly than God does. John acknowledges that inward assurance can be shaken even in those who sincerely seek to obey Christ. Yet God is greater than the human heart and knows the full reality of his children’s faith and repentance. Rom 2:15 So they show that the work of the law is written… God is greater than our hearts, His judgment is truer than personal feelings, fears, and incomplete self-knowledge. He sees the whole life of faith, including repentance, obedience, and the work of grace within His people. 1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance… and He knows all things. God fully knows every action, motive, and hidden struggle. His knowledge assures the faithful that He judges with perfect righteousness and mercy. Jhn 21:17 Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John…”… Beloved, John addresses his readers as members of God’s family, reflecting the love and fellowship that should mark the church. 1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test… if our hearts do not condemn us, A clear conscience before God follows sincere faith, obedience, and reliance on Christ’s forgiveness. Though believers remain imperfect, they need not live under guilt when they walk in the truth. Job 27:6 I will cling to my righteousness and never let go.… we have confidence before God, Through Jesus Christ, believers may come before God with assurance rather than fear, trusting that He receives those who belong to Him. Heb 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence… and we will receive from Him whatever we ask, God hears the petitions of His children and answers in keeping with His will. Such confidence belongs to those who live in fellowship with Him, whose desires are being shaped by faith and love. 1Jn 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:… because we keep His commandments Obedience does not earn God’s favor but marks the life of one who belongs to Him. In this context, His command centers on faith in Jesus Christ and love for fellow believers. 1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.… and do what is pleasing in His sight. A life pleasing to God is characterized by trust in His Son, obedience to His word, and love expressed in daily conduct. Heb 13:21 equip you with every good thing to do His will.… And this is His commandment: God’s will for His people is presented as one unified charge, joining faith in Christ with love for fellow believers. 2Jn 1:6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments… that we should believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, Faith rests in Jesus as the Son of God and the promised Messiah, trusting His person, authority, and saving work. Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed… and we should love one another Those who belong to Christ are to show practical care, loyalty, and self-sacrifice within the community of believers. Jhn 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.… just as He commanded us. Jesus Himself established this pattern of faith and love, making it essential to the life and unity of His disciples. Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. Whoever keeps His commandments Obedience reveals genuine faith, especially faith in Christ and love for fellow believers. Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. remains in God, and God in him. The believer lives in fellowship with God, sustained by His presence and united to Him through Christ. 1Jn 4:15-16 If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God,… And by this we know that He remains in us: God provides assurance of this relationship through the visible fruit of obedience and a changed life. 1Jn 4:13 By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us:… by the Spirit He has given us. The Holy Spirit confirms God’s dwelling within His people, guiding them in truth and marking them as participants in the new covenant. Rom 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com.
