Berean Study Bible Wives and HusbandsPeter applies the call to honor rightful authority within the household. Eph 5:22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. submit yourselves to your husbands, Wives are to show willing respect for their husbands’ leadership, not because they are of lesser worth, but because marriage has an order established by God. Eph 5:24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives… so that even if they refuse to believe the word, Some Christian women were married to men who rejected the gospel. 1Co 7:12-14 To the rest I say this: If a brother has an unbelieving wife… they will be won over without words Persistent arguments could not accomplish what a faithful life might reveal. Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,… by the behavior of their wives A wife’s purity, reverence, and steady conduct could bear witness to the reality of her faith and lead her husband toward belief. Pro 31:11-12 The heart of her husband trusts in her… when they see Unbelieving husbands encounter the reality of the gospel through the daily conduct of their wives within the home. 1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles… your pure Chaste and morally upright behavior demonstrates faithfulness to God and to the marriage covenant, even amid a society shaped by pagan values. 2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness… and reverent demeanor. A wife’s fear of God produces respectful and honorable conduct, which may lead her husband to recognize the truth of her faith. 1Pe 1:17 Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work… Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, Peter directs Christian women to seek beauty rooted in godly character rather than in displays of wealth or social position. 1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance… such as braided hair Elaborate hairstyles were commonly associated with leisure, prosperity, and public display in Roman society. 1Ti 2:9 Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves… or gold jewelry Precious ornaments could draw attention to status and appearance, but they could not produce the lasting beauty God values. Pro 25:12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold… or fine clothes, Expensive garments likewise marked rank and affluence. Peter calls believers to reject vanity and to cultivate the quiet strength of a life submitted to God. Jas 2:2-3 Suppose a man comes into your meeting… but from the inner disposition of your heart, Peter directs Christian women to give priority to the character formed within rather than to outward adornment. In Scripture, the heart encompasses a person’s thoughts, desires, and will, from which conduct flows. 1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance… the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, Physical beauty and costly decoration are temporary, but godly character endures. Gentleness and quietness describe a settled, humble disposition marked by self-control, peace, and faithful submission to God, not weakness or lack of speech. Mat 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… which is precious in God’s sight. God judges by the inward person rather than outward appearance. He values humble obedience, purity, and a peaceful spirit above the standards by which the world measures beauty and worth. 1Pe 2:4-5 As you come to Him, the living stone, rejected by men… For this is how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. Sarah, Rebekah, Ruth, and other faithful women were known chiefly for reverence toward God, moral character, and steadfast faith. Their beauty was not defined by costly clothing or jewelry but by lives shaped by obedience and trust in the Lord. 1Ti 2:9-10 Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves… They put their hope in God Their security rested ultimately in God rather than wealth, social standing, or the protection of men. Though they lived in societies where women’s circumstances were closely connected to their households, they relied on the Lord in times of uncertainty, barrenness, danger, and loss. Psa 146:5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,… and were submissive to their husbands, Their submission was expressed through respect, faithfulness, and willingness to honor their husbands’ rightful leadership within marriage. Sarah’s conduct toward Abraham provides the chief example, showing that godly submission is consistent with dignity, faith, and obedience to God. Tit 2:4-5 In this way they can train the young women… just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. Sarah honored Abraham’s leadership, even in her private thoughts, while trusting God amid years of barrenness and uncertainty. Her conduct reflects the ordered, faithful partnership God established for marriage. Gen 18:12 So she laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out… And you are her children if you do what is right Christian women become Sarah’s spiritual daughters by sharing her faith and expressing it through upright, obedient lives. Isa 51:2 Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah… and refuse to give way to fear. They are not to be intimidated by hardship, opposition, or uncertainty, but to continue in faithful obedience with confidence in God. Psa 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.… Husbands, in the same way, Husbands are included in Peter’s instruction on godly conduct within the household. Their authority does not excuse harshness or self-interest; they too are accountable to God for the way they live and serve within marriage. Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved… treat your wives with consideration A husband is to know his wife’s needs, circumstances, and burdens, dealing with her thoughtfully rather than carelessly. Marriage requires attentive love, patience, and responsible care. Eph 5:28-29 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives… as a delicate vessel, Wives are to be treated with gentleness and protection, recognizing the general physical differences between men and women. The description does not lessen a wife’s worth, dignity, intelligence, or spiritual standing. 1Co 12:22-23 On the contrary, the parts of the body… and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, Husband and wife alike receive God’s gift of salvation and eternal life through Christ. A wife is not a lesser heir but shares fully in the grace God gives His people, and her husband must honor her accordingly. Eph 3:6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are… so that your prayers will not be hindered. A husband’s relationship with God cannot be separated from his treatment of his wife. Persistent disregard, cruelty, or dishonor in the home brings spiritual consequences and disrupts his fellowship with God. Psa 66:18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not…
Turning from EvilPeter addresses the whole body of believers, gathering his instructions for Christian conduct into a unified call. Their shared life was especially important amid social hostility and suffering. 1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord… be like-minded Believers were to pursue unity of purpose, shaped by submission to Christ rather than personal ambition or division. Php 2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded,… and sympathetic, They were to bear one another’s burdens and respond with compassion to suffering, need, and loss within the church. Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize… love as brothers, Those united to Christ belong to one spiritual family. Their conduct was to reflect genuine devotion and faithful care for one another. 1Th 4:9 Now about brotherly love, you do not need… be tenderhearted Christian fellowship required mercy rather than harshness, with a readiness to forgive and help those in need. Eph 4:32 Be kind and tenderhearted to one another,… and humble. Humility rejects the pursuit of status and places the good of others above self-interest. It reflects the pattern of Christ and preserves peace among God’s people. 1Pe 5:5-6 Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves… Do not repay evil with evil Christians facing hostility were not to answer wrongdoing with wrongdoing. Retaliation belongs to God, while believers are to follow Christ’s example of patient endurance under unjust suffering. Pro 24:29 I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man… or insult with insult, In a culture where public honor was fiercely defended, insults often led to escalating conflict. Christians were to reject such responses and govern their speech with restraint. 1Pe 2:23 When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate… but with blessing, Rather than seeking revenge, believers are to desire and express good toward those who wrong them. Such conduct reflects the mercy Christ showed even to His enemies. Luk 6:28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. because to this you were called This response is part of the believer’s calling in Christ. God’s people are set apart to display His character in a hostile world. 1Pe 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered… so that you may inherit a blessing. Those who live in obedience to God’s calling may rest in His promised blessing, including the full inheritance of salvation reserved for His people. Heb 12:17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit… For, “Whoever would love life and see good days This phrase, drawn from Psalm 34, describes the blessed life of one who fears God and walks in His ways. Loving life and seeing good days does not promise ease or wealth, but God’s favor, peace, and the spiritual well-being that accompanies faithful obedience. Psa 34:12 Who is the man who delights in life, … must keep his tongue from evil Words reveal the heart and can bring great harm through slander, anger, gossip, and abusive speech. Believers facing hostility were to resist answering evil with evil and preserve a faithful witness before both the church and the world. Psa 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips… and his lips from deceitful speech. God requires truthfulness in every matter. Deception contradicts the character of Christ, who committed no sin and spoke no deceit. Honest speech protects fellowship, upholds justice, and reflects the truth of the gospel. Pro 4:24 Put away deception from your mouth; keep your lips… He must turn from evil Repentance requires a deliberate break with sinful conduct and the patterns that sustain it. Peter wrote to believers living under social pressure and hostility, calling them to display the holy character expected of God’s people. Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD… and do good; Rejecting evil is joined to active righteousness. Christians were to make their faith visible through honorable conduct, practical kindness, and obedience to God even when such behavior brought no public approval. Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. he must seek peace Peace includes a settled relationship with God and a sincere effort to live rightly with others. In a setting marked by suspicion and opposition, believers were not to provoke needless conflict or return hostility for hostility. Rom 14:19 So then, let us pursue what leads to peace… and pursue it. Peace often requires persistence, humility, and restraint. God’s people are to work toward reconciliation where possible, reflecting the peace secured through Christ. 2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness… For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, God watches over those who belong to Him, knowing their circumstances and sustaining them in faithful obedience. The righteous are not sinless, but are accepted by God through faith and seek to live according to His will. Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous… and His ears are inclined to their prayer. God receives the prayers of His people and remains attentive to their needs. Prayer expresses dependence upon Him, and He answers according to His wisdom, promises, and purposes. 2Ch 7:15 Now My eyes will be open, and My ears attentive… But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” God stands in judgment against unrepentant evildoers. His opposition to sin is certain, and those who persist in rebellion will not receive His favor or escape His justice. Psa 34:16 But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil,… Who can harm you Peter reassures believers that devotion to righteousness places them under God’s care. Though Christians in Asia Minor faced hostility and could suffer physically, their enemies could not destroy their standing before God or rob them of the eternal life secured in Christ. Rom 8:31 What then shall we say in response to these things?… if you are zealous Believers are to pursue what honors God with steady commitment, not merely outward activity. Faithful conduct distinguished Christians from the surrounding pagan culture and often silenced false accusations against them. Gal 4:18 Nevertheless, it is good to be zealous—at any time… for what is good? What is good includes conduct shaped by God’s commands: justice, mercy, humility, honesty, purity, and service to others. By living in obedience to Christ, believers display God’s character even in a hostile world. 1Th 5:21 but test all things. Hold fast to what is good.
Suffering for RighteousnessPeter recognizes that faithful obedience can bring opposition. Christians in the first century were sometimes slandered, marginalized, or punished because they would not abandon Christ or conform to pagan practices. Such suffering does not mean God has forsaken His people; it may come precisely because they remain committed to what is right before Him. Mat 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted,… you are blessed. Those who endure for righteousness are favored by God, even when their circumstances are difficult. Their blessing rests in belonging to Christ, receiving His sustaining presence, and awaiting the reward He has promised to those who remain faithful. Mat 5:11-12 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you… “Do not fear what they fear; Peter draws on God’s instruction to Isaiah during a time of national anxiety and political threat. Believers are not to be governed by the fears, pressures, or threats that control those who do not trust the Lord. Human opposition is real, but it is not ultimate. Isa 8:12-13 Do not call conspiracy everything these people… do not be shaken.” Faith in God gives stability when persecution or hostility arises. Rather than yielding to intimidation, Christians are to remain settled in the truth, confident that God rules over their circumstances and will preserve them through every trial. Psa 16:8 I have set the LORD always before me… But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Believers are to recognize Christ’s absolute authority in the deepest part of their lives—the heart, the center of one’s emotions, will, and intellect—yielding their thoughts, desires, and decisions to Him. Peter wrote to Christians facing opposition, reminding them that fear of men must not displace reverence for Christ. Isa 8:13 The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy.… Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you. Christians should be able to explain the sure hope they possess through Christ’s death, resurrection, and promised return. Their confidence in salvation and eternal life would naturally invite questions from a hostile or unbelieving world. 2Ti 4:2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season;… But respond with gentleness and respect, The truth is to be spoken without hostility, pride, or contempt. A faithful witness reflects Christ’s humility while treating others with dignity, even when answering accusations or challenging questions. 2Ti 2:24-25 And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome… keeping a clear conscience, Believers are to live without known, unrepented sin, with their conduct governed by God’s will. A clear conscience gives confidence before God and steadiness before people when faithfulness brings opposition. Act 24:16 In this hope, I strive always to maintain a clear conscience… so that those who slander you Early Christians were often misrepresented because they rejected pagan worship and confessed Christ as King. Their loyalty to Christ could be portrayed as disloyalty to Roman society or contempt for its customs. 1Pe 4:4 Because of this, they consider it strange… may be put to shame False accusations are exposed when the lives of believers consistently contradict them. The shame belongs to those whose charges prove empty, not as personal revenge, but as the truth is made evident. Psa 35:26 May those who gloat in my distress be ashamed and confounded… by your good behavior in Christ. Conduct shaped by obedience to Christ—integrity, humility, purity, kindness, and self-control—provides a visible answer to slander and testifies to the transforming power of the gospel. 1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles… For it is better, God measures hardship by faithfulness, not comfort. 1Pe 2:19-20 For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering… if it is God’s will, He may permit believers to face suffering within His sovereign purpose. 1Pe 4:19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will… to suffer for doing good Opposition can come when obedience to Christ conflicts with the values of the world. Mat 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted,… than for doing evil. Suffering caused by sin brings deserved consequences, but suffering endured for righteous conduct bears witness to a blameless life. 1Pe 4:15-16 Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief… For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, Christ’s death was the final and sufficient sacrifice for sin. Unlike the repeated offerings under the old covenant, His sacrifice fully accomplished atonement and fulfilled what the sacrificial system anticipated. Heb 7:27 Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer… the righteous for the unrighteous, Jesus, the sinless One, bore the judgment deserved by sinners. His death was substitutionary: the righteous suffered in the place of the guilty, satisfying God’s justice while providing forgiveness. 2Co 5:21 God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf,… to bring you to God. Through Christ, those separated from God by sin are reconciled to Him. His sacrifice opens the way for believers to stand before God in restored fellowship. Heb 10:19-22 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter… He was put to death in the body Jesus truly died by crucifixion. His physical death was public, historical, and necessary for the redemption accomplished through His shed blood. Col 1:22 But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body… but made alive in the Spirit, Though He died in the flesh, Christ was raised to life by the power of the Holy Spirit. His resurrection declared His victory over sin and death and secured the future resurrection of His people. Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead… in whom Raised in the spirit, Jesus Christ exercised divine authority over the spiritual realm. Heb 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ,… He also went He entered the place of confinement for rebellious spirits. Eph 4:9-10 What does “He ascended” mean, except that He also… and preached He proclaimed His victory over sin, death, and the powers opposed to God. 1Pe 4:6 That is why the gospel was preached even to those… to the spirits These were fallen angelic beings associated with the rebellion in the days before the flood. Heb 1:14 Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve… in prison They remain under God’s judgment, awaiting final punishment. 2Pe 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned… who disobeyed long ago The people of Noah’s generation had abandoned God and were marked by pervasive evil. Their rebellion brought the judgment of the flood upon the world. Gen 6:5-7 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man… when God waited patiently Before judgment came, God allowed time for repentance while Noah carried out the work God had commanded. His patience did not cancel judgment, but it showed that the flood was not sudden or unjust. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise… in the days of Noah Noah lived among a corrupt people yet remained faithful to God. He obeyed God’s instructions and became the means by which his household was preserved. Mat 24:37-39 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be… while the ark was being built. The ark stood as visible testimony to God’s warning and Noah’s obedience. Its construction prepared a place of safety before the floodwaters came. Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,… In the ark a few people, only eight souls, Noah, his wife, Shem, Ham, Japheth, and their wives entered the ark. Though nearly all humanity perished, God preserved this family to continue the human race after the flood. 2Pe 2:5 He did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood… were saved through water. The same waters that judged the ungodly lifted the ark above destruction. Noah and his family were carried safely through the flood because God provided the ark and they entered it in faith and obedience. Gen 7:17-23 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth… And this water symbolizes the baptism that now saves you also— The floodwaters carried Noah and his family safely through God’s judgment while cleansing the earth of sin, and the ark preserved them. In a corresponding way, baptism marks the believer’s deliverance from the old life of sin into new life in Christ. It is joined to the saving work God accomplishes, not because water itself has power, but because baptism testifies to faith in the risen Christ. 1Co 10:1-2 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,… not the removal of dirt from the body, Baptism is not a ceremonial washing or an outward act that cleanses the body. Its meaning reaches beyond external ritual to the cleansing and renewal God brings within. Mat 23:25-26 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!… but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God— In baptism, the believer openly appeals to God and commits to Him with a conscience cleansed by Christ’s sacrifice. It expresses repentance, faith, and identification with Christ’s death and new life. Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a sincere heart… through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Baptism saves only through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. His victory over sin and death gives believers forgiveness, a cleansed conscience, and the hope of resurrection. Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him… who has gone into heaven After rising from the dead, Jesus appeared to His disciples over forty days before ascending bodily into heaven. His ascension marked the completion of His earthly ministry and His return to the Father, from whom He will come again. Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up… and is at the right hand of God, Jesus now occupies the place of highest honor and authority beside the Father. Having completed His sacrificial work for sin, He reigns as the exalted Lord and intercedes for His people. Rom 8:34 Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died… with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him. Every order of spiritual power stands under Christ’s authority. His death, resurrection, and ascension established His victory over all hostile forces, and all creation remains subject to His rule. Eph 1:20-22 which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
