The End Times

“At that time

Daniel points to the climactic period of world history when God brings His purposes for Israel and the nations to completion.

2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days…
Luk 21:28 When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up…
Rev 1:7 Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye…

Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people,

Michael is the chief angelic protector appointed over Israel, acting under God’s authority in the conflict against spiritual evil.

Jud 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed…
Exo 23:20-21 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you…
Psa 121:4 Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber…

will rise up.

His action marks a decisive heavenly intervention as events move toward final judgment and deliverance.

Rev 12:7 Then a war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels…
Psa 68:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. God arises.…
Psa 94:1 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.

There will be a time of distress,

A future period of tribulation will bring suffering and persecution on a scale never before experienced.

Jer 30:7 How awful that day will be! None will be like it!…
Luk 21:23 How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing…
Rev 3:10 Because you have kept My command to persevere,…

the likes of which will not have occurred from the beginning of nations until that time.

The distress will surpass every previous national or global calamity in severity.

Mat 24:21 For at that time there will be great tribulation,…
Mrk 13:19 For those will be days of tribulation unseen…
Exo 10:14 The locusts swarmed across the land and settled…

But at that time your people—

Israel remains the people bound to God’s covenant promises, though only the faithful remnant is in view.

Isa 26:20-21 Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors…
Zec 14:7 It will be a unique day known only to the LORD,…
Jhn 16:32 Look, an hour is coming and has already come……

everyone whose name is found written in the book—

The book records those who belong to God and are appointed for life.

Exo 32:32-33 “Yet now, if You would only forgive their sin”…
Psa 69:28 May they be blotted out of the Book of Life…
Rev 20:15 And if anyone was found whose name was not written…

will be delivered.

God will preserve and rescue His faithful people through the final crisis, leading to their ultimate salvation.

Psa 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD…
Isa 45:17 But Israel will be saved by the LORD…
Oba 1:17 But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance…

And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake,

Daniel foretells a bodily resurrection of those who have died. Death is portrayed as sleep because it is temporary in light of God’s power to raise the dead. Those returned to dust will be summoned from the grave at God’s appointed time.

Isa 26:19 Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.…
Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming…
1Co 15:52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye…

some to everlasting life,

The righteous will enter unending life in the presence of God, receiving the fulfillment of His promises and the final vindication of their faithfulness.

Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 6:40 For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks…
Mat 25:46 And they will go away into eternal punishment,…

but others to shame and everlasting contempt.

The wicked will also be raised and judged. Their resurrection leads not to restoration but to enduring disgrace under God’s righteous judgment, establishing that death does not end human accountability.

Jer 23:40 And I will bring upon you everlasting shame…
Jer 20:11 But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior.…
Isa 66:24 As they go forth, they will see the corpses of the men…

Then the wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,

Those who faithfully understand God’s truth and live according to it will share in the glory of the resurrection. Their radiance reflects God’s approval and the transformed, incorruptible life promised to His people at the end of the age.

Mat 13:43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun…
Pro 13:9 The light of the righteous shines brightly…
Php 2:15 you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault…

and those who lead many to righteousness

Faithful teachers and witnesses who turn others from rebellion toward obedience to God will be especially honored. In Daniel’s setting, this included those who remained loyal to God and instructed others during a time of widespread persecution and deception.

Isa 53:11 After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life…
Rom 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man…
Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…

will shine like the stars forever and ever.

Their reward will not fade with earthly kingdoms or human recognition. Like stars fixed in the heavens, their honor will endure throughout eternity in God’s kingdom.

1Co 15:41 The sun has one degree of splendor, the moon another,…
Rev 22:5 There will be no more night in the city.…
Isa 60:19 No longer will the sun be your light by day,…

But you, Daniel, shut up these words and seal the book until the time of the end.

Daniel was commanded to preserve the revelation faithfully for the generation that would witness its fulfillment. Its full meaning would remain partly concealed until God’s appointed time, when the events described would make the prophecy clear.

Dan 8:26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings……
Isa 29:11-12 And the entire vision will be to you like the words…
Rev 10:4 When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to…

Many will roam to and fro,

In that period, people will search widely and earnestly for understanding as the world moves toward its final crisis.

Amo 8:12 People will stagger from sea to sea and roam…
Jer 5:1 Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem.…
2Ch 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD roam to and fro over all the earth,…

and knowledge will increase.”

Knowledge of God’s purposes and of Daniel’s prophecies will increase as the time of the end approaches, though greater human learning will not by itself produce spiritual understanding.

Hab 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory…
Isa 11:9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain…
Col 1:9-10 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God…

Then I, Daniel, looked and saw

Daniel personally received this closing vision concerning Israel’s future, the time of distress, resurrection, and final deliverance.

Dan 10:5 I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man…
Ezk 1:1 In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month,…

two others standing there,

Two angelic beings appeared as attendants and witnesses to the revelation soon to be explained.

Luk 24:4 While they were puzzling over this, two men…
Act 1:10 They were looking intently into the sky…

one on this bank of the river

The river was likely the Tigris, where Daniel had previously encountered the heavenly messenger. One angel stood on Daniel’s side, marking the earthly setting of the vision.

Ezk 47:6 “Son of man, do you see this?” he asked.…
Ezk 47:7 When I arrived, I saw a great number of trees…

and one on the opposite bank.

The other stood across the river, while the heavenly figure clothed in linen remained above the waters, displaying God’s authority over the events revealed.

Ezk 47:12 Along both banks of the river, fruit trees…
2Ki 2:14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah and struck the waters.…

One of them said to the man dressed in linen,

The man in linen appears as a holy heavenly messenger, clothed in garments associated with purity and priestly service. The other speaker is also part of the heavenly scene, indicating that Daniel is being shown a conversation concerning God’s appointed future.

Dan 10:5-6 I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man…
Ezk 9:2-3 And I saw six men coming from the Upper Gate,…
Rev 15:6 And out of the temple came the seven angels…

who was above the waters of the river,

Standing above the river displays authority over creation and over the course of events unfolding on earth. The setting remains connected to the Tigris River, where Daniel received the vision, while the messenger’s position reveals his heavenly power.

Psa 29:3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters;…
Psa 29:10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD…
Gen 1:2 Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was…

“How long until the fulfillment of these wonders?”

The question concerns the completion of the distress, conflict, deliverance, and resurrection revealed to Daniel. Heaven itself marks these events as certain, though their timing rests under God’s sovereign control.

Dan 8:13-14 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one…
Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Rev 6:10 And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord…

And the man dressed in linen,

A heavenly messenger appears in priestly attire, marked by purity and service before God. His presence continues the vision Daniel received beside the Tigris.

Dan 10:5-6 I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man…
Ezk 9:2-3 And I saw six men coming from the Upper Gate,…
Rev 15:6 And out of the temple came the seven angels…

who was above the waters of the river,

Standing over the river displays authority over the created order and confirms the messenger’s exalted position.

Dan 10:4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month,…
Psa 29:10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD…
Gen 1:2 Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was…

raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven,

With both hands raised, he makes a solemn and binding oath before God.

1Ti 2:8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray…
Lam 3:41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:
Psa 134:2 Lift up your hands to the sanctuary and bless the LORD!

and I heard him swear by Him who lives forever,

The oath rests on the eternal God, whose purposes cannot fail or be altered.

Rev 10:6 And he swore by Him who lives forever and ever,…
Heb 6:13 When God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one…
Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You brought forth…

saying, “It will be for a time, and times, and half a time.

The appointed period is three and a half years, a limited season of severe oppression allowed within God’s fixed timetable.

Dan 7:25 He will speak out against the Most High and oppress…
Rev 12:14 But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle…
Rev 13:5 The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and…

When the power of the holy people has finally been shattered,

Israel’s strength will be broken through persecution and conflict, leaving the faithful unable to deliver themselves.

Isa 62:12 And they will be called the Holy People,…
Lev 26:19 I will break down your stubborn pride and make your sky…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

all these things will be completed.”

The suffering, judgment, deliverance, and final events revealed to Daniel will reach their appointed conclusion.

Rev 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel…
Rev 16:17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air,…
Rev 21:6 And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega,…

I heard, but I did not understand.

Daniel received the revelation concerning the final tribulation, the deliverance of God’s people, the resurrection of the dead, and the appointed end. Though he heard the angel’s words, their full sequence and fulfillment remained concealed from him.

Dan 8:27 I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for days.…
Luk 18:34 But the disciples did not understand any of these things…
Jhn 12:16 At first His disciples did not understand these things…

So I asked, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things?”

Addressing the angel with reverence, Daniel sought to know how the events would conclude. He was told that the words were sealed until the time of the end, when God’s purposes would be fulfilled exactly as revealed.

Mat 24:3 While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, …
Dan 7:16 I approached one of those who were standing there,…
Dan 10:14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen…

“Go on your way, Daniel,”

Daniel was to return to his appointed life and service, leaving the full outcome of the vision in God’s hands. His responsibility was not to uncover every detail but to preserve the revelation he had received.

1Ki 19:15 Then the LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came,…
Exo 4:19 Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt,…
Jon 3:2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh”…

he replied,

The heavenly messenger who had explained the vision to Daniel now brought the conversation to a close, confirming the authority and finality of God’s message.

1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…
Luk 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.…
Act 9:6 Now get up and go into the city, and you…

“for the words are closed up and sealed

The revelation was to be preserved without complete understanding until the period God had appointed. Its fulfillment would clarify what remained hidden to Daniel.

Dan 8:26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings……
Isa 29:11 And the entire vision will be to you like the words…
Rev 10:4 When the seven thunders had spoken, I was about to…

until the time of the end.

The vision reaches beyond Daniel’s lifetime to the final stages of God’s purposes for Israel and the nations, when the events foretold will unfold exactly as God has determined.

Dan 8:19 and said, “Behold, I will make known to you…
Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified…
Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…

Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined,

God’s faithful people will be cleansed through suffering and tested by the pressures of the final period of tribulation. Their trials will expose genuine faith and prepare them for vindication, separating those who remain loyal to God from those who abandon His ways.

Mal 3:2-3 But who can endure the day of His coming?…
Zec 13:9 This third I will bring through the fire;…
1Pe 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while…

but the wicked will continue to act wickedly.

The rebellion of the wicked will persist even as God’s purposes unfold openly in history. Judgment and distress will not produce repentance in those committed to evil; instead, their conduct will reveal the settled condition of their hearts.

Rev 22:11 Let the unrighteous continue to be unrighteous…
Pro 4:16-17 For they cannot sleep unless they do evil;…
Psa 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; the liars go astray…

None of the wicked will understand,

Those who reject God will remain blind to the meaning of the events surrounding them. They may observe the turmoil, conflict, and judgments of the end, yet they will not recognize God’s hand or respond to His warning.

Pro 28:5 Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek…
Psa 14:4 Will the workers of iniquity never learn?…
Jer 4:22 For My people are fools; they have not known Me.…

but the wise will understand.

The wise, marked by faithfulness to God, will discern the significance of these events and recognize that His promised deliverance is drawing near. Their understanding will enable them to endure faithfully until the appointed end.

Hos 14:9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;…
Pro 15:14 A discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool…
Pro 1:5 let the wise listen and gain instruction,…

And from the time the daily sacrifice is abolished

A regular temple offering will be stopped, marking a decisive assault on worship ordained by God. Antiochus IV Epiphanes foreshadowed this desecration when he halted Jewish sacrifices in 167 BC, but Daniel’s final-time context points to a future interruption of sacrifices in a rebuilt temple.

Dan 8:11-12 It magnified itself, even to the Prince of the host;…
Num 28:3-8 And tell them that this is the food offering…
Exo 29:38-42 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar…

and the abomination of desolation set up,

An idolatrous object or act will profane the holy place, openly defying God and demanding allegiance opposed to Him. Antiochus’s altar to Zeus provided a historical pattern, while the ultimate abomination will be associated with the final ruler of rebellion before Christ’s return.

Dan 11:31 His forces will rise up and desecrate the temple fortress.…
Mat 24:15 So when you see standing in the holy place…
Mrk 13:14 So when you see the abomination of desolation…

there will be 1,290 days.

The period begins with the removal of the daily sacrifice and the establishment of the abomination. Its length confirms that these events unfold according to God’s fixed timetable, leading toward the promised deliverance and restoration of His people.

Rev 11:2-3 But exclude the courtyard outside the temple.…
Rev 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness…
Rev 13:5 The beast was given a mouth to speak arrogant and…

Blessed is he who waits

God promises favor to those who remain faithful through the appointed time of suffering and uncertainty.

Isa 30:18 Therefore the LORD longs to be gracious to you;…
Psa 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him;…
Lam 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,…

and reaches the end

Endurance is required until God completes His purposes and brings the period of tribulation to its conclusion.

Mat 24:13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
Mrk 13:13 You will be hated by everyone because of My name,…
Heb 10:36-37 You need to persevere, so that after you have done…

of the 1,335 days.

These 1,335 days extend forty-five days beyond the 1,290 days previously given, marking a final interval before the full establishment of God’s kingdom and the vindication of His people.

Dan 8:26 The vision of the evenings and the mornings……
Dan 10:14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen…
Rev 10:6 And he swore by Him who lives forever and ever,…

But as for you, go on your way until the end.

Daniel’s prophetic commission had been completed. Though he had been shown events extending far beyond his lifetime, he was to continue faithfully in the life God had given him until his earthly course was finished.

Mat 24:13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
2Ti 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race…
Heb 3:14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end…

You will rest,

Daniel was promised death without uncertainty or abandonment. His rest would end the burdens and limitations of his present life while he awaited God’s appointed future.

Rev 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write…
Isa 57:2 Those who walk uprightly enter into peace;…
Job 3:17 There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary…

and then you will arise

Daniel would personally be raised from the dead. The promise affirms a bodily resurrection in which God’s faithful servants will live again after death.

Job 19:25-27 But I know that my Redeemer lives…
Isa 26:19 Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.…
Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming…

to your inheritance

God had reserved an allotted portion for Daniel in His coming kingdom. His faithful service would not be forgotten, and he would receive what God had promised.

Heb 9:15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,…
Eph 1:18 I ask that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened,…
Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share…

at the end of the days.”

Daniel’s resurrection and inheritance belong to the final completion of God’s purposes for history, when His kingdom is fully established and all that He revealed is brought to its appointed conclusion.

Gen 49:1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said,…
Deu 31:29 For I know that after my death, you will become…
Hos 3:5 Afterward, the people of Israel will return…
