Seeking Vashti’s Successor

Some time later,

Esther Finds Favor

Now there was at the citadel of Susa

Susa, in present-day Iran, was a major Persian royal city and a residence of the king. Its citadel was the fortified royal complex where imperial administration was conducted. Many Jews remained scattered across the Persian Empire after the Babylonian exile.

Mordecai’s family was traced to Kish, who was deported from Jerusalem during Babylon’s conquest of Judah. The exile brought Judah’s royal family, leading citizens, craftsmen, and warriors into Babylon as God’s judgment for the nation’s persistent rebellion. Jerusalem’s fall ended Judah’s independence and left the people living under foreign rule.

Nebuchadnezzar II ruled Babylon from 605 to 562 BC and expanded his empire through military campaigns across the ancient Near East. He captured Jerusalem, removed its treasures and leaders, and later destroyed the city and temple in 586 BC.
