The Remainder Divided

1  וַיִּקָּ֨הֲל֜וּ (And assembled) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֤ת (the congregation) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) שִׁלֹ֔ה (at Shiloh), וַיַּשְׁכִּ֥ינוּ (and they set up) שָׁ֖ם (there) אֶת־ (-) אֹ֣הֶל (the Tent) מוֹעֵ֑ד (of Meeting), וְהָאָ֥רֶץ (and the land) נִכְבְּשָׁ֖ה (was subdued) לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before them). 2  וַיִּוָּֽתְרוּ֙ (And there remained) בִּבְנֵ֣י (among the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) חָלְק֖וּ (had yet received) אֶת־ (-) נַֽחֲלָתָ֑ם (their inheritance) שִׁבְעָ֖ה (seven) שְׁבָטִֽים׃ (tribes).

3  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), עַד־ (How) אָ֙נָה֙ (long) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) מִתְרַפִּ֔ים (will neglect) לָבוֹא֙ (to go in) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) נָתַ֣ן (has given) לָכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (of your⁺ fathers). 4  הָב֥וּ (Appoint) לָכֶ֛ם (from among you⁺) שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה (three) אֲנָשִׁ֖ים (men) לַשָּׁ֑בֶט (for the tribe), וְאֶשְׁלָחֵ֗ם (and I will send them), וְיָקֻ֜מוּ (and they shall rise) וְיִֽתְהַלְּכ֥וּ (and go) בָאָ֛רֶץ (through the land) וְיִכְתְּב֥וּ (and survey) אוֹתָ֛הּ (it) לְפִ֥י (according to) נַֽחֲלָתָ֖ם (their inheritance), וְיָבֹ֥אוּ (and they shall come) אֵלָֽי׃ (to me). 5  וְהִֽתְחַלְּק֥וּ (And they shall divide) אֹתָ֖הּ (it) לְשִׁבְעָ֣ה (into seven) חֲלָקִ֑ים (parts). יְהוּדָ֞ה (Judah) יַעֲמֹ֤ד (shall remain) עַל־ (in) גְּבוּלוֹ֙ (their territory) מִנֶּ֔גֶב (on the south), וּבֵ֥ית (and the house) יוֹסֵ֛ף (of Joseph) יַעַמְד֥וּ (shall remain) עַל־ (in) גְּבוּלָ֖ם (their territory) מִצָּפֽוֹן׃ (on the north). 6  וְאַתֶּ֞ם (And you⁺) תִּכְתְּב֤וּ (shall write down) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) שִׁבְעָ֣ה (in seven) חֲלָקִ֔ים (portions) וַֽהֲבֵאתֶ֥ם (and bring it) אֵלַ֖י (to me) הֵ֑נָּה (here), וְיָרִ֨יתִי (that I may cast) לָכֶ֤ם (for you⁺) גּוֹרָל֙ (lots) פֹּ֔ה (here) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ (our God).

7  כִּ֠י (But) אֵֽין־ (not is) חֵ֤לֶק (a portion) לַלְוִיִּם֙ (for the Levites) בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ midst), כִּֽי־ (for) כְהֻנַּ֥ת (the priesthood) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) נַחֲלָת֑וֹ (is their inheritance). וְגָ֡ד (And Gad) וּרְאוּבֵ֡ן (and Reuben) וַחֲצִי֩ (and half) שֵׁ֨בֶט (the tribe) הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֜ה (of Manasseh) לָקְח֣וּ (have received) נַחֲלָתָ֗ם (their inheritance) מֵעֵ֤בֶר (beyond) לַיַּרְדֵּן֙ (the Jordan) מִזְרָ֔חָה (on the east), אֲשֶׁר֙ (which) נָתַ֣ן (gave) לָהֶ֔ם (them) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) עֶ֥בֶד (the servant) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

8  וַיָּקֻ֥מוּ (And arose) הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים (the men) וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ (and went), וַיְצַ֣ו (and commanded) יְהוֹשֻׁ֡עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) הַהֹלְכִים֩ (those who went) לִכְתֹּ֨ב (to write down) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the land), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), לְ֠כוּ (Go) וְהִתְהַלְּכ֨וּ (and walk up down) בָאָ֜רֶץ (in the land), וְכִתְב֤וּ (and describe) אוֹתָהּ֙ (it), וְשׁ֣וּבוּ (and return) אֵלַ֔י (to me), וּ֠פֹה (and here) אַשְׁלִ֨יךְ (I will cast) לָכֶ֥ם (for you⁺) גּוֹרָ֛ל (lots) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃ (in Shiloh).

9  וַיֵּלְכ֤וּ (And went) הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ (the men) וַיַּעַבְר֣וּ (and passed) בָאָ֔רֶץ (through the land) וַיִּכְתְּב֧וּהָ (and they wrote it down) לֶֽעָרִ֛ים (by the cities) לְשִׁבְעָ֥ה (in seven) חֲלָקִ֖ים (parts) עַל־ (in) סֵ֑פֶר (a book), וַיָּבֹ֧אוּ (and they came) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua) אֶל־ (at) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (the camp) שִׁלֹֽה׃ (in Shiloh).

10  וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ֩ (And cast) לָהֶ֨ם (for them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֧עַ (Joshua) גּוֹרָ֛ל (lots) בְּשִׁלֹ֖ה (in Shiloh) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיְחַלֶּק־ (and divided) שָׁ֨ם (there) יְהוֹשֻׁ֧עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֛רֶץ (the land) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) כְּמַחְלְקֹתָֽם׃פ (according to their divisions).

Benjamin’s Inheritance

11  וַיַּ֗עַל (And came up) גּוֹרַ֛ל (the lot) מַטֵּ֥ה (of the tribe) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֖ן (of Benjamin) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם (by their clans), וַיֵּצֵא֙ (and came out) גְּב֣וּל (the territory) גּֽוֹרָלָ֔ם (of their lot) בֵּ֚ין (between) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וּבֵ֖ין (and between) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יוֹסֵֽף׃ (of Joseph).

12  וַיְהִ֨י (And began) לָהֶ֧ם (their) הַגְּב֛וּל (border) לִפְאַ֥ת (on the side) צָפ֖וֹנָה (north) מִן־ (at) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (the Jordan), וְעָלָ֣ה (and went up) הַגְּבוּל֩ (the border) אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֨תֶף (the shoulder) יְרִיח֜וֹ (of Jericho) מִצָּפ֗וֹן (on the north), וְעָלָ֤ה (and it went up) בָהָר֙ (through the hill country) יָ֔מָּה (westward), וְהָיָה (and was) תֹּֽצְאֹתָ֔יו (its outgoing) מִדְבַּ֖רָה (at the Wilderness) בֵּ֥ית (of Beth-) אָֽוֶן׃ (aven). 13  וְעָבַר֩ (And went over) מִשָּׁ֨ם (from there) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) ל֗וּזָה (toward Luz), אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֤תֶף (the shoulder) ל֙וּזָה֙ (of Luz) נֶ֔גְבָּה (southward) הִ֖יא (that is), בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el)) וְיָרַ֤ד (and descended) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) עַטְר֣וֹת (to Ataroth-) אַדָּ֔ר (addar), עַל־ (near) הָהָ֕ר (the hill) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (that is) מִנֶּ֥גֶב (on the south) לְבֵית־ (of Beth-) חֹר֖וֹן (horon) תַּחְתּֽוֹן׃ (Lower).

14  וְתָאַ֣ר (And extended) הַגְּבוּל֩ (the border) וְנָסַ֨ב (and has gone round) לִפְאַת־ (to the corner) יָ֜ם (of the sea) נֶ֗גְבָּה (southward), מִן־ (from) הָהָר֙ (the hill) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that is) עַל־ (is at) פְּנֵ֥י (the front) בֵית־ (of Beth-) חֹרוֹן֮ (horon) נֶגְבָּה֒ (southward), וְהָיָה (and) תֹֽצְאֹתָ֗יו (it ended) אֶל־ (at) קִרְיַת־ (Kiriath-) בַּ֙עַל֙ (baal), הִ֚יא (that is), קִרְיַ֣ת (Kiriath-) יְעָרִ֔ים (jearim)), עִ֖יר (a city) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah). זֹ֖את (This was) פְּאַת־ (the side) יָֽם׃ (west).

15  וּפְאַת־ (And the side is) נֶ֕גְבָּה (south) מִקְצֵ֖ה (at the end) קִרְיַ֣ת (of Kiriath-) יְעָרִ֑ים (jearim), וְיָצָ֤א (and extended) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) יָ֔מָּה (on the west) וְיָצָ֕א (and went out) אֶל־ (to) מַעְיַ֖ן (the spring) מֵ֥י (at the Waters) נֶפְתּֽוֹחַ׃ (of Nephtoah). 16  וְיָרַ֨ד (And came down) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) אֶל־ (to) קְצֵ֣ה (the end) הָהָ֗ר (of the mountain) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that is) עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵי֙ (the face) גֵּ֣י (of the Valley) בֶן־ (of the Son) הִנֹּ֔ם (of Hinnom), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (which is) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) רְפָאִ֖ים (of Rephaim) צָפ֑וֹנָה (on the north), וְיָרַד֩ (and descended) גֵּ֨י (to the Valley) הִנֹּ֜ם (of Hinnom), אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֤תֶף (the shoulder) הַיְבוּסִי֙ (of the Jebusite) נֶ֔גְבָּה (on the south), וְיָרַ֖ד (and descended) עֵ֥ין (to En-) רֹגֵֽל׃ (rogel). 17  וְתָאַ֣ר (And it went around) מִצָּפ֗וֹן (from the north), וְיָצָא֙ (and went out) עֵ֣ין (to En-) שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ (shemesh), וְיָצָא֙ (and extended) אֶל־ (toward) גְּלִיל֔וֹת (Geliloth), אֲשֶׁר־ (which is) נֹ֖כַח (before) מַעֲלֵ֣ה (the Ascent) אֲדֻמִּ֑ים (of Adummim), וְיָרַ֕ד (and descended) אֶ֥בֶן (to the stone) בֹּ֖הַן (of Bohan) בֶּן־ (son) רְאוּבֵֽן׃ (of Reuben), 18  וְעָבַ֛ר (and it passed over) אֶל־ (toward) כֶּ֥תֶף (the shoulder) מוּל־ (opposite) הָֽעֲרָבָ֖ה (the Arabah) צָפ֑וֹנָה (northward), וְיָרַ֖ד (and went down) הָעֲרָבָֽתָה׃ (to the Arabah). 19  וְעָבַ֨ר (And passed over) הַגְּב֜וּל (the border) אֶל־ (to) כֶּ֣תֶף (the shoulder) בֵּית־ (of Beth-) חָגְלָה֮ (hoglah) צָפוֹנָה֒ (northward), וְהָיָה (and were) תֹּצְאוֹתָיו (the outgoings) הַגְּב֗וּל (of the border) אֶל־ (at) לְשׁ֤וֹן (the bay) יָם־ (of Sea) הַמֶּ֙לַח֙ (the Salt), צָפ֔וֹנָה (north) אֶל־ (at) קְצֵ֥ה (the end) הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (of the Jordan) נֶ֑גְבָּה (south). זֶ֖ה (This) גְּב֥וּל (border) נֶֽגֶב׃ (is the south).

20  וְהַיַּרְדֵּ֥ן (And the Jordan) יִגְבֹּל־ (was border) אֹת֖וֹ (of it) לִפְאַת־ (on the side) קֵ֑דְמָה (east).

זֹ֡את (This was) נַחֲלַת֩ (the inheritance) בְּנֵ֨י (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֧ן (of Benjamin), לִגְבֽוּלֹתֶ֛יהָ (according to its boundaries) סָבִ֖יב (all around), לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ (by their clans).

21  וְהָי֣וּ (And these were) הֶֽעָרִ֗ים (the cities) לְמַטֵּ֛ה (of the tribe) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֖ן (of Benjamin) לְמִשְׁפְּחֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (by their clans):

יְרִיח֥וֹ (Jericho), וּבֵית־ (and Beth-) חָגְלָ֖ה (and hoglah), וְעֵ֥מֶק (and Emek-) קְצִֽיץ׃ (kezi z), 22  וּבֵ֧ית (and Beth-) הָֽעֲרָבָ֛ה (and arabah), וּצְמָרַ֖יִם (and Zemaraim), וּבֵֽית־ (and Beth-) אֵֽל׃ (el), 23  וְהָעַוִּ֥ים (and Avim), וְהַפָּרָ֖ה (and Parah), וְעָפְרָֽה׃ (and Ophrah), 24  וּכְפַ֧ר (and Chephar-) הָעַמֹּנִי (ammoni), וְהָֽעָפְנִ֖י (and Ophni), וָגָ֑בַע (and Geba)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) שְׁתֵּים־ (two) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten), וְחַצְרֵיהֶֽן׃ (and their villages).

25  גִּבְע֥וֹן (Gibeon), וְהָֽרָמָ֖ה (and Ramah), וּבְאֵרֽוֹת׃ (and Beeroth), 26  וְהַמִּצְפֶּ֥ה (and Mizpah), וְהַכְּפִירָ֖ה (and Chephirah), וְהַמֹּצָֽה׃ (and Mozah), 27  וְרֶ֥קֶם (and Rekem), וְיִרְפְּאֵ֖ל (and Irpeel), וְתַרְאֲלָֽה׃ (and Taralah), 28  וְצֵלַ֡ע (Zelah), הָאֶ֜לֶף (and Haeleph), וְהַיְבוּסִ֨י (and the Jebusite) הִ֤יא (that is) יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (Jerusalem)), גִּבְעַ֣ת (Gibeah), קִרְיַ֔ת (and Kiriath)— עָרִ֥ים (cities) אַרְבַּֽע־ (four) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten), וְחַצְרֵיהֶ֑ן (and their villages).

זֹ֛את (This was) נַֽחֲלַ֥ת (the inheritance) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) בִנְיָמִ֖ן (of Benjamin) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃פ (by their clans).
