Deborah and Barak

1  וַיֹּסִ֙פוּ֙ (And again) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְאֵה֖וּד (and Ehud) מֵֽת׃ (was dead). 2  וַיִּמְכְּרֵ֣ם (And sold them) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) בְּיַד֙ (into the hand) יָבִ֣ין (of Jabin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) כְּנַ֔עַן (of Canaan), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) מָלַ֖ךְ (reigned) בְּחָצ֑וֹר (in Hazor). וְשַׂר־ (And the commander) צְבָאוֹ֙ (of his army) סִֽיסְרָ֔א (was Sisera), וְה֥וּא (and he) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (dwelt) בַּחֲרֹ֥שֶׁת (in Harosheth-) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (hagoyim). 3  וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ (And cried out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), כִּ֠י (for) תְּשַׁ֨ע (nine) מֵא֤וֹת (hundred) רֶֽכֶב־ (chariots) בַּרְזֶל֙ (of iron were) ל֔וֹ (unto him), וְ֠הוּא (and he) לָחַ֞ץ (oppressed) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֧י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) בְּחָזְקָ֖ה (harshly) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) שָׁנָֽה׃ס (years).

4  וּדְבוֹרָה֙ (And Deborah), אִשָּׁ֣ה (a woman) נְבִיאָ֔ה (prophetess), אֵ֖שֶׁת (the wife) לַפִּיד֑וֹת (of Lapidoth), הִ֛יא (she) שֹׁפְטָ֥ה (was judging) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִֽיא׃ (that). 5  וְ֠הִיא (And she) יוֹשֶׁ֨בֶת (would sit) תַּֽחַת־ (under) תֹּ֜מֶר (the palm tree) דְּבוֹרָ֗ה (of Deborah) בֵּ֧ין (between) הָרָמָ֛ה (Ramah) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) בֵּֽית־ (and Beth-) אֵ֖ל (el) בְּהַ֣ר (in the hill country) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim). וַיַּעֲל֥וּ (And came up) אֵלֶ֛יהָ (to her) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) לַמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ (for judgment).

6  וַתִּשְׁלַ֗ח (And she sent) וַתִּקְרָא֙ (and called) לְבָרָ֣ק (for Barak) בֶּן־ (son) אֲבִינֹ֔עַם (of Abinoam) מִקֶּ֖דֶשׁ (from Kedesh) נַפְתָּלִ֑י (of Naphtali), וַתֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), הֲלֹ֥א (Has not) צִוָּ֣ה׀ (commanded) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), לֵ֤ךְ (Go) וּמָֽשַׁכְתָּ֙ (and draw out) בְּהַ֣ר (at Mount) תָּב֔וֹר (Tabor), וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ (and take) עִמְּךָ֗ (with you) עֲשֶׂ֤רֶת (ten) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) אִ֔ישׁ (men) מִבְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) נַפְתָּלִ֖י (of Naphtali) וּמִבְּנֵ֥י (and of the sons) זְבֻלֽוּן׃ (of Zebulun)? 7  וּמָשַׁכְתִּ֨י (And I will draw out) אֵלֶ֜יךָ (against you) אֶל־ (at) נַ֣חַל (the River) קִישׁ֗וֹן (Kishon) אֶת־ (-) סִֽיסְרָא֙ (Sisera) שַׂר־ (the commander) צְבָ֣א (of army) יָבִ֔ין (of Jabin), וְאֶת־ (and) רִכְבּ֖וֹ (his chariots) וְאֶת־ (and) הֲמוֹנ֑וֹ (his multitude), וּנְתַתִּ֖יהוּ (and I will deliver him) בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ (into your hand).

8  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (to her) בָּרָ֔ק (Barak), אִם־ (If) תֵּלְכִ֥י (you will go) עִמִּ֖י (with me) וְהָלָ֑כְתִּי (and I will go), וְאִם־ (but if) לֹ֥א (not) תֵלְכִ֛י (you will go) עִמִּ֖י (with me), לֹ֥א (not) אֵלֵֽךְ׃ (I will go).

9  וַתֹּ֜אמֶר (And she said), הָלֹ֧ךְ (Going) אֵלֵ֣ךְ (I will go) עִמָּ֗ךְ (with you); אֶ֚פֶס (only) כִּי֩ (that) לֹ֨א (not) תִֽהְיֶ֜ה (there will be) תִּֽפְאַרְתְּךָ֗ (glory for you) עַל־ (in) הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the journey) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אַתָּ֣ה (you) הוֹלֵ֔ךְ (are taking), כִּ֣י (for) בְֽיַד־ (into the hand) אִשָּׁ֔ה (of a woman) יִמְכֹּ֥ר (will sell) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) סִֽיסְרָ֑א (Sisera). וַתָּ֧קָם (And arose) דְּבוֹרָ֛ה (Deborah) וַתֵּ֥לֶך (and went) עִם־ (with) בָּרָ֖ק (Barak) קֶֽדְשָׁה׃ (to Kedesh). 10  וַיַּזְעֵ֨ק (And called) בָּרָ֜ק (Barak) אֶת־ (-) זְבוּלֻ֤ן (Zebulun) וְאֶת־ (and) נַפְתָּלִי֙ (Naphtali) קֶ֔דְשָׁה (to Kedesh), וַיַּ֣עַל (and he went up) בְּרַגְלָ֔יו (at his feet) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (with ten) אַלְפֵ֖י (thousand) אִ֑ישׁ (men), וַתַּ֥עַל (and went up) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him) דְּבוֹרָֽה׃ (Deborah).

11  וְחֶ֤בֶר (And Heber) הַקֵּינִי֙ (the Kenite) נִפְרָ֣ד (had separated himself) מִקַּ֔יִן (from the Kenites) מִבְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) חֹבָ֖ב (of Hobab) חֹתֵ֣ן (the father-in-law) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (of Moses), וַיֵּ֣ט (and he pitched) אָהֳל֔וֹ (his tent) עַד־ (near) אֵל֥וֹן (a great tree) בַּצְעַנִּים (in Zaanannim), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) אֶת־ (beside) קֶֽדֶשׁ׃ (Kedesh).

12  וַיַּגִּ֖דוּ (And they reported) לְסִֽיסְרָ֑א (to Sisera) כִּ֥י (that) עָלָ֛ה (had gone up) בָּרָ֥ק (Barak) בֶּן־ (son) אֲבִינֹ֖עַם (of Abinoam) הַר־ (to Mount) תָּבֽוֹר׃ס (Tabor). 13  וַיַּזְעֵ֨ק (And gathered together) סִֽיסְרָ֜א (Sisera) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) רִכְבּ֗וֹ (his chariots), תְּשַׁ֤ע (nine) מֵאוֹת֙ (hundred) רֶ֣כֶב (chariots) בַּרְזֶ֔ל (of iron), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) אִתּ֑וֹ (with him) מֵחֲרֹ֥שֶׁת (from Harosheth-) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (hagoyim) אֶל־ (to) נַ֥חַל (the River) קִישֽׁוֹן׃ (Kishon).

14  וַתֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) דְּבֹרָ֨ה (Deborah) אֶל־ (to) בָּרָ֜ק (Barak), ק֗וּם (Arise), כִּ֣י (for) זֶ֤ה (this is) הַיּוֹם֙ (the day) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) נָתַ֨ן (has delivered) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) סִֽיסְרָא֙ (Sisera) בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ (into your hand). הֲלֹ֥א (Has not) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) יָצָ֣א (gone out) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before you)?

וַיֵּ֤רֶד (And went down) בָּרָק֙ (Barak) מֵהַ֣ר (from Mount) תָּב֔וֹר (Tabor), וַעֲשֶׂ֧רֶת (and with ten) אֲלָפִ֛ים (thousand) אִ֖ישׁ (men) אַחֲרָֽיו׃ (following him). 15  וַיָּ֣הָם (And routed) יְ֠הוָה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) סִֽיסְרָ֨א (Sisera), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) הָרֶ֧כֶב (the chariots), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֛ה (the army), לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֖רֶב (of the sword) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) בָרָ֑ק (Barak); וַיֵּ֧רֶד (and came down) סִֽיסְרָ֛א (Sisera) מֵעַ֥ל (from) הַמֶּרְכָּבָ֖ה (the chariot) וַיָּ֥נָס (and fled) בְּרַגְלָֽיו׃ (on foot).

16  וּבָרָ֗ק (And Barak) רָדַ֞ף (pursued) אַחֲרֵ֤י (after) הָרֶ֙כֶב֙ (the chariots) וְאַחֲרֵ֣י (and) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה (the army), עַ֖ד (as far as) חֲרֹ֣שֶׁת (Harosheth-) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (hagoyim), וַיִּפֹּ֞ל (and fell) כָּל־ (all) מַחֲנֵ֤ה (the army) סִֽיסְרָא֙ (of Sisera) לְפִי־ (by the mouth) חֶ֔רֶב (of the sword); לֹ֥א (not) נִשְׁאַ֖ר (remained) עַד־ (even) אֶחָֽד׃ (one).

Jael Kills Sisera

17  וְסִֽיסְרָא֙ (And Sisera) נָ֣ס (had fled) בְּרַגְלָ֔יו (on foot) אֶל־ (to) אֹ֣הֶל (the tent) יָעֵ֔ל (of Jael) אֵ֖שֶּׁת (the wife) חֶ֣בֶר (of Heber) הַקֵּינִ֑י (the Kenite), כִּ֣י (for) שָׁל֗וֹם (there was peace) בֵּ֚ין (between) יָבִ֣ין (Jabin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) חָצ֔וֹר (of Hazor) וּבֵ֕ין (and between) בֵּ֖ית (the house) חֶ֥בֶר (of Heber) הַקֵּינִֽי׃ (the Kenite). 18  וַתֵּצֵ֣א (And went out) יָעֵל֮ (Jael) לִקְרַ֣את (to meet) סִֽיסְרָא֒ (Sisera), וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֗יו (to him) סוּרָ֧ה (Turn aside), אֲדֹנִ֛י (my lord), סוּרָ֥ה (turn aside) אֵלַ֖י (to me). אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֑א (do fear). וַיָּ֤סַר (And he turned aside) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (with her) הָאֹ֔הֱלָה (into the tent), וַתְּכַסֵּ֖הוּ (and she covered him) בַּשְּׂמִיכָֽה׃ (with a blanket).

19  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And he said) אֵלֶ֛יהָ (to her), הַשְׁקִינִי־ (Give me to drink), נָ֥א (please), מְעַט־ (a little) מַ֖יִם (water), כִּ֣י (for) צָמֵ֑אתִי (I am thirsty). וַתִּפְתַּ֞ח (And she opened) אֶת־ (-) נֹ֧אוד (a jug) הֶחָלָ֛ב (of milk), וַתַּשְׁקֵ֖הוּ (and gave him a drink), וַתְּכַסֵּֽהוּ׃ (and covered him).

20  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (to her), עֲמֹ֖ד (Stand) פֶּ֣תַח (at the door) הָאֹ֑הֶל (of the tent), וְהָיָה֩ (and) אִם־ (if) אִ֨ישׁ (any man) יָב֜וֹא (comes) וּשְׁאֵלֵ֗ךְ (and inquires of you) וְאָמַ֛ר (and says), הֲיֵֽשׁ־ (Is there) פֹּ֥ה (here) אִ֖ישׁ (any man)? וְאָמַ֥רְתְּ (And you shall say), אָֽיִן׃ (No).

21  וַתִּקַּ֣ח (And took) יָעֵ֣ל (Jael) אֵֽשֶׁת־ (the wife) חֶ֠בֶר (of Heber) אֶת־ (-) יְתַ֨ד (a peg) הָאֹ֜הֶל (of the tent), וַתָּ֧שֶׂם (and she put) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּקֶּ֣בֶת (the hammer) בְּיָדָ֗הּ (in her hand), וַתָּב֤וֹא (and she went) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) בַּלָּ֔אט (in secrecy) וַתִּתְקַ֤ע (and drove) אֶת־ (-) הַיָּתֵד֙ (the peg) בְּרַקָּת֔וֹ (into his temple), וַתִּצְנַ֖ח (and it went down) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (into the ground); וְהֽוּא־ (and for he) נִרְדָּ֥ם (was fast asleep) וַיָּ֖עַף (and weary). וַיָּמֹֽת׃ (And he died).

22  וְהִנֵּ֣ה (And bebold), בָרָק֮ (Barak) רֹדֵ֣ף (pursued) אֶת־ (-) סִֽיסְרָא֒ (Sisera), וַתֵּצֵ֤א (and came out) יָעֵל֙ (Jael) לִקְרָאת֔וֹ (to meet him) וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֔וֹ (to him), לֵ֣ךְ (Come), וְאַרְאֶ֔ךָּ (and I will show you) אֶת־ (-) הָאִ֖ישׁ (the man) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) אַתָּ֣ה (you) מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ (seek). וַיָּבֹ֣א (And he went) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (with her), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and there) סִֽיסְרָא֙ (Sisera) נֹפֵ֣ל (lay) מֵ֔ת (dead), וְהַיָּתֵ֖ד (and the with peg) בְּרַקָּתֽוֹ׃ (in his temple).

23  וַיַּכְנַ֤ע (And subdued) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on day) הַה֔וּא (that) אֵ֖ת (-) יָבִ֣ין (Jabin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the faces) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 24  וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ (And grew stronger) יַ֤ד (the hand) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), הָל֣וֹךְ (going on) וְקָשָׁ֔ה (and becoming hard) עַ֖ל (against) יָבִ֣ין (Jabin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan), עַ֚ד (until) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הִכְרִ֔יתוּ (they had destroyed) אֵ֖ת (-) יָבִ֥ין (Jabin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) כְּנָֽעַן׃פ (of Canaan).
