Psalm 44

Redeem Us, O God
(Romans 8:35–39)

לַמְנַצֵּ֬חַ (For the one directing). לִבְנֵי־ (Of the sons) קֹ֬רַח (of Korah). מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃ (A Maskil).

1אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ (O God), בְּאָזְנֵ֬ינוּ (with our ears) שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ (we have heard);

אֲבוֹתֵ֥ינוּ (our fathers) סִפְּרוּ־ (have recounted) לָ֑נוּ (to us)

פֹּ֥עַל (the work) פָּעַ֥לְתָּ (You did) בִֽ֝ימֵיהֶ֗ם (in their days),

בִּ֣ימֵי (in the days) קֶֽדֶם׃ (of old).

2  אַתָּ֤ה׀ (How You) יָדְךָ֡ (with Your hand) גּוֹיִ֣ם (the nations) ה֭וֹרַשְׁתָּ (dispossessed),

וַתִּטָּעֵ֑ם (and them You planted).

תָּרַ֥ע (You afflicted) לְ֝אֻמִּ֗ים (the peoples)

וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃ (and sent them forth).

3  כִּ֤י (For) לֹ֪א (not) בְחַרְבָּ֡ם (by their sword) יָ֥רְשׁוּ (did they gain possession) אָ֗רֶץ (of the land),

וּזְרוֹעָם֮ (and their arm) לֹא־ (not) הוֹשִׁ֪יעָ֫ה (did bring salvation) לָּ֥מוֹ (to them).

כִּֽי־ (But) יְמִֽינְךָ֣ (it was Your right hand)

וּ֭זְרוֹעֲךָ (and Your arm), וְא֥וֹר (and the light) פָּנֶ֗יךָ (of Your face),

כִּ֣י (because) רְצִיתָֽם׃ (You delighted in them).

4  אַתָּה־ (You) ה֣וּא (are) מַלְכִּ֣י (my King), אֱלֹהִ֑ים (O God);

צַ֝וֵּ֗ה (Command) יְשׁוּע֥וֹת (deliverances) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (for Jacob).

5  בְּ֭ךָ (Through You) צָרֵ֣ינוּ (our adversaries) נְנַגֵּ֑חַ (we push back);

בְּ֝שִׁמְךָ֗ (by Your name) נָב֥וּס (we trample) קָמֵֽינוּ׃ (those rising against us).

6  כִּ֤י (For) לֹ֣א (not) בְקַשְׁתִּ֣י (in my bow) אֶבְטָ֑ח (do I trust),

וְ֝חַרְבִּ֗י (and my sword) לֹ֣א (not) תוֹשִׁיעֵֽנִי׃ (will save me).

7  כִּ֣י (For) ה֭וֹשַׁעְתָּנוּ (You have saved us) מִצָּרֵ֑ינוּ (from our adversaries),

וּמְשַׂנְאֵ֥ינוּ (and those hating us) הֱבִישֽׁוֹתָ׃ (You have put to shame).

8  בֵּֽ֭אלֹהִים (In God) הִלַּלְ֣נוּ (we have boasted) כָל־ (all) הַיּ֑וֹם (the day),

וְשִׁמְךָ֓׀ (and Your name) לְעוֹלָ֖ם (forever) נוֹדֶ֣ה (and we will praise).

סֶֽלָה׃ (Selah)

9  אַף־ (yet) זָ֭נַחְתָּ (You have rejected us) וַתַּכְלִימֵ֑נוּ (and put us to shame),

וְלֹא־ (and not) תֵ֝צֵ֗א (You do go forth) בְּצִבְאוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ (with our armies).

10  תְּשִׁיבֵ֣נוּ (You make us turn) אָ֭חוֹר (back) מִנִּי־ (from) צָ֑ר (the adversary);

וּ֝מְשַׂנְאֵ֗ינוּ (and those hating us) שָׁ֣סוּ (have taken plunder) לָֽמוֹ׃ (for themselves).

11  תִּ֭תְּנֵנוּ (You have appoint us) כְּצֹ֣אן (like sheep) מַאֲכָ֑ל (for food),

וּ֝בַגּוֹיִ֗ם (and among the nations) זֵרִיתָֽנוּ׃ (You have scattered us).

12  תִּמְכֹּֽר־ (You sell) עַמְּךָ֥ (Your people) בְלֹא־ (with no) ה֑וֹן (profit),

וְלֹ֥א־ (and not) רִ֝בִּ֗יתָ (do You increase) בִּמְחִירֵיהֶֽם׃ (by their price).

13  תְּשִׂימֵ֣נוּ (You make us) חֶ֭רְפָּה (a reproach) לִשְׁכֵנֵ֑ינוּ (to our neighbors),

לַ֥עַג (a mockery) וָ֝קֶ֗לֶס (and derision) לִסְבִיבוֹתֵֽינוּ׃ (to those around us).

14  תְּשִׂימֵ֣נוּ (You make us) מָ֭שָׁל (a byword) בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם (among the nations),

מְנֽוֹד־ (a shaking) רֹ֝֗אשׁ (of the head) בַּל־ (among) אֻמִּֽים׃ (the peoples).

15  כָּל־ (All) הַ֭יּוֹם (the day) כְּלִמָּתִ֣י (my disgrace is) נֶגְדִּ֑י (before me),

וּבֹ֖שֶׁת (and the shame) פָּנַ֣י (of my face) כִּסָּֽתְנִי׃ (has covered me),

16  מִ֭קּוֹל (at the voice) מְחָרֵ֣ף (of a reproacher) וּמְגַדֵּ֑ף (and reviler),

מִפְּנֵ֥י (from the face) א֝וֹיֵ֗ב (of the enemy) וּמִתְנַקֵּֽם׃ (and avenger).

17  כָּל־ (All) זֹ֣את (this) בָּ֭אַתְנוּ (has come upon us)

וְלֹ֣א (and not) שְׁכַחֲנ֑וּךָ (have we forgotten You)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) שִׁ֝קַּ֗רְנוּ (have we dealt falsely) בִּבְרִיתֶֽךָ׃ (with Your covenant).

18  לֹא־ (Not) נָס֣וֹג (has turned) אָח֣וֹר (back) לִבֵּ֑נוּ (our heart)

וַתֵּ֥ט (nor have turned aside) אֲשֻׁרֵ֗ינוּ (our steps) מִנִּ֥י (from) אָרְחֶֽךָ׃ (Your path).

19  כִּ֣י (Yet) דִ֭כִּיתָנוּ (You have crushed us) בִּמְק֣וֹם (in the place) תַּנִּ֑ים (of jackals)

וַתְּכַ֖ס (and You have covered) עָלֵ֣ינוּ (over us) בְצַלְמָֽוֶת׃ (with the shadow of death).

20  אִם־ (If) שָׁ֭כַחְנוּ (we had forgotten) שֵׁ֣ם (the name) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (of our God),

וַנִּפְרֹ֥שׂ (or spread out) כַּ֝פֵּ֗ינוּ (our hands) לְאֵ֣ל (to a god) זָֽר׃ (strange),

21  הֲלֹ֣א (would not) אֱ֭לֹהִים (God) יַֽחֲקָר־ (search out) זֹ֑את (this)?

כִּֽי־ (For) ה֥וּא (He) יֹ֝דֵ֗עַ (knows) תַּעֲלֻמ֥וֹת (the secrets) לֵֽב׃ (of the heart).

22  כִּֽי־ (Yet) עָ֭לֶיךָ (for Your sake) הֹרַ֣גְנוּ (we are killed) כָל־ (all) הַיּ֑וֹם (the day);

נֶ֝חְשַׁ֗בְנוּ (we are reckoned) כְּצֹ֣אן (as sheep) טִבְחָֽה׃ (for the slaughter).

23  ע֤וּרָה׀ (Rouse Yourself), לָ֖מָּה (why) תִישַׁ֥ן׀ (do You sleep), אֲדֹנָ֑י (O Lord)?

הָ֝קִ֗יצָה (Awake); אַל־ (not) תִּזְנַ֥ח (should You reject us) לָנֶֽצַח׃ (forever).

24  לָֽמָּה־ (Why) פָנֶ֥יךָ (Your face) תַסְתִּ֑יר (do You hide)

תִּשְׁכַּ֖ח (You forget) עָנְיֵ֣נוּ (our affliction) וְֽלַחֲצֵֽנוּ׃ (and our oppression)?

25  כִּ֤י (For) שָׁ֣חָה (is bowed down) לֶעָפָ֣ר (to the dust) נַפְשֵׁ֑נוּ (our soul);

דָּבְקָ֖ה (has clung) לָאָ֣רֶץ (to the ground) בִּטְנֵֽנוּ׃ (our belly).

26  ק֭וּמָֽה (Rise up) עֶזְרָ֣תָה (as helper) לָּ֑נוּ (to us)

וּ֝פְדֵ֗נוּ (and redeem us) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake) חַסְדֶּֽךָ׃ (of Your loving devotion).
