After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death.1Ἦν δὲ τὸ πάσχα καὶ τὰ ἄζυμα μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς πῶς αὐτὸν ἐν δόλῳ κρατήσαντες ἀποκτείνωσιν
But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”2ἔλεγον γάρ Μὴ ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ μή‿ ποτε ἔσται θόρυβος τοῦ λαοῦ
And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head.3Καὶ ὄντος αὐτοῦ ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ κατακειμένου αὐτοῦ ἦλθεν γυνὴ ἔχουσα ἀλάβαστρον μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτελοῦς συντρίψασα τὴν ἀλάβαστρον κατέχεεν αὐτοῦ τῆς κεφαλῆς
But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted?4Ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς Εἰς τί ἀπώλεια αὕτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply.5ἠδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο τὸ μύρον πραθῆναι ἐπάνω δηναρίων τριακοσίων καὶ δοθῆναι τοῖς πτωχοῖς καὶ ἐνεβριμῶντο αὐτῇ
But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me.6 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἄφετε αὐτήν τί αὐτῇ κόπους παρέχετε καλὸν ἔργον ἠργάσατο ἐν ἐμοί
For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.7πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν καὶ ὅταν θέλητε δύνασθε αὐτοῖς (πάντοτε) εὖ ποιῆσαι ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε
She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial.8 ἔσχεν ἐποίησεν προέλαβεν μυρίσαι τὸ σῶμά μου εἰς τὸν ἐνταφιασμόν
Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”9ἀμὴν δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον εἰς ὅλον τὸν κόσμον καὶ ἐποίησεν αὕτη λαληθήσεται εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them.10Καὶ Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριὼθ εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἀπῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα αὐτὸν παραδοῖ αὐτοῖς
And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.11οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες ἐχάρησαν καὶ ἐπηγγείλαντο αὐτῷ ἀργύριον δοῦναι καὶ ἐζήτει πῶς αὐτὸν εὐκαίρως παραδοῖ
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”12Καὶ τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν ἀζύμων ὅτε τὸ πάσχα ἔθυον λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ Ποῦ θέλεις ἀπελθόντες ἑτοιμάσωμεν ἵνα φάγῃς τὸ πάσχα
And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him.13Καὶ ἀποστέλλει δύο τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἀπαντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὕδατος βαστάζων ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ
Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”
Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”15καὶ αὐτὸς ὑμῖν δείξει ἀνάγαιον μέγα ἐστρωμένον ἕτοιμον καὶ ἐκεῖ ἑτοιμάσατε ἡμῖν
So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.16Καὶ ἐξῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ καὶ ἦλθον εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα
In the evening He came with the twelve.17Καὶ ὀψίας γενομένης ἔρχεται μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα
Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”18Καὶ ἀνακειμένων αὐτῶν καὶ ἐσθιόντων Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με ἐσθίων μετ’ ἐμοῦ
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said,Is it I?”19ἤρξαντο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς κατὰ εἷς Μήτι ἐγώ
He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish.20 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Εἷς τῶν δώδεκα ἐμβαπτόμενος μετ’ ἐμοῦ εἰς τὸ (ἓν) τρύβλιον
The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”21ὅτι μὲν Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑπάγει καθὼς γέγραπται περὶ αὐτοῦ οὐαὶ δὲ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται καλὸν αὐτῷ εἰ οὐκ ἐγεννήθη ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”22Καὶ ἐσθιόντων αὐτῶν λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ εἶπεν Λάβετε τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου
Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.23Καὶ λαβὼν ποτήριον εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔπιον ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες
And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.24καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον ὑπὲρ πολλῶν
Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”25ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐκέτι οὐ μὴ πίω ἐκ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered.’27Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Πάντες σκανδαλισθήσεσθε ⧼ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ⧽ ὅτι γέγραπται Πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα Καὶ τὰ πρόβατα διασκορπισθήσονται
“But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”28Ἀλλὰ μετὰ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.29 δὲ Πέτρος ἔφη αὐτῷ Εἰ καὶ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐγώ
Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”30Καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι σὺ σήμερον ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν δὶς ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ
But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all said likewise.31 δὲ ἐκπερισσῶς ἐλάλει Ἐὰν δέῃ με συναποθανεῖν σοι οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ πάντες ἔλεγον
Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”32Καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς χωρίον οὗ τὸ ὄνομα Γεθσημανί καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Καθίσατε ὧδε ἕως προσεύξωμαι
And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed.33καὶ παραλαμβάνει τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τὸν Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν Ἰωάννην μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤρξατο ἐκθαμβεῖσθαι καὶ ἀδημονεῖν
Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”34καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Περίλυπός ἐστιν ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε
He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.35Καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπιπτεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ προσηύχετο ἵνα εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν παρέλθῃ ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ὥρα
And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.36καὶ ἔλεγεν Ἀββᾶ Πατήρ πάντα δυνατά σοι παρένεγκε τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἀλλ’ οὐ τί ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλὰ τί σύ
Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?37Καὶ ἔρχεται καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ Σίμων καθεύδεις οὐκ ἴσχυσας μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”38γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ ἔλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής
Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words.39Καὶ πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπών
And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.40καὶ πάλιν ἐλθὼν εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας ἦσαν γὰρ αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ καταβαρυνόμενοι καὶ οὐκ ᾔδεισαν τί ἀποκριθῶσιν αὐτῷ
Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.41Καὶ ἔρχεται τὸ τρίτον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Καθεύδετε τὸ λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε ἀπέχει ἦλθεν ὥρα ἰδοὺ παραδίδοται Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν
Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”42ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν ἰδοὺ παραδιδούς με ἤγγικεν
And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43Καὶ εὐθὺς ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος παραγίνεται 〈ὁ〉 Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄχλος μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ τῶν γραμματέων καὶ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων
Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”44Δεδώκει δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν σύσσημον αὐτοῖς λέγων Ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν κρατήσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπάγετε ἀσφαλῶς
As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.45καὶ ἐλθὼν εὐθὺς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ λέγει Ῥαββί καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν
Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him.46Οἱ δὲ ἐπέβαλαν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῷ καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν
And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.47εἷς δέ τις τῶν παρεστηκότων σπασάμενος τὴν μάχαιραν ἔπαισεν τὸν δοῦλον τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ ἀφεῖλεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτάριον
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me?48Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”49καθ’ ἡμέραν ἤμην πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με ἀλλ’ ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαί
Then they all forsook Him and fled.50Καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον πάντες
Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him,51Καὶ νεανίσκος τις συνηκολούθει αὐτῷ περιβεβλημένος σινδόνα ἐπὶ γυμνοῦ καὶ κρατοῦσιν αὐτόν
and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.52 δὲ καταλιπὼν τὴν σινδόνα γυμνὸς ἔφυγεν
And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes.53Καὶ ἀπήγαγον τὸν Ἰησοῦν πρὸς τὸν ἀρχιερέα καὶ συνέρχονται πάντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς
But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.54καὶ Πέτρος ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ἕως ἔσω εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ ἦν συνκαθήμενος μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν καὶ θερμαινόμενος πρὸς τὸ φῶς
Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.55Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον ἐζήτουν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μαρτυρίαν εἰς τὸ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν καὶ οὐχ ηὕρισκον
For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.56πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐψευδομαρτύρουν κατ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἴσαι αἱ μαρτυρίαι οὐκ ἦσαν
Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying,57Καί τινες ἀναστάντες ἐψευδομαρτύρουν κατ’ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες
“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ”58Ὅτι Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν αὐτοῦ λέγοντος ὅτι Ἐγὼ καταλύσω τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον τὸν χειροποίητον καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἄλλον ἀχειροποίητον οἰκοδομήσω
But not even then did their testimony agree.59καὶ οὐδὲ οὕτως ἴση ἦν μαρτυρία αὐτῶν
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”60Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀρχιερεὺς εἰς μέσον ἐπηρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν
But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”61 δὲ ἐσιώπα καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίνατο οὐδέν Πάλιν ἀρχιερεὺς ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Εὐλογητοῦ
Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”62 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ ὄψεσθε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ δεξιῶν καθήμενον τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον μετὰ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?63 δὲ ἀρχιερεὺς διαρρήξας τοὺς χιτῶνας αὐτοῦ λέγει Τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων
You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.64ἠκούσατε τῆς βλασφημίας τί ὑμῖν φαίνεται Οἱ δὲ πάντες κατέκριναν αὐτὸν ἔνοχον εἶναι θανάτου
Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.65Καὶ ἤρξαντό τινες ἐμπτύειν αὐτῷ καὶ περικαλύπτειν αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ κολαφίζειν αὐτὸν καὶ λέγειν αὐτῷ Προφήτευσον καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ῥαπίσμασιν αὐτὸν ἔλαβον
Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came.66Καὶ ὄντος τοῦ Πέτρου κάτω ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ ἔρχεται μία τῶν παιδισκῶν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως
And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”67καὶ ἰδοῦσα τὸν Πέτρον θερμαινόμενον ἐμβλέψασα αὐτῷ λέγει Καὶ σὺ μετὰ τοῦ Ναζαρηνοῦ ἦσθα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.68 δὲ ἠρνήσατο λέγων Οὔτε οἶδα οὔτε ἐπίσταμαι σὺ τί λέγεις καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω εἰς τὸ προαύλιον ‹καὶ ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν›
And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.”69Καὶ παιδίσκη ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἤρξατο πάλιν λέγειν τοῖς παρεστῶσιν ὅτι Οὗτος ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐστιν
But he denied it again. And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.70 δὲ πάλιν ἠρνεῖτο Καὶ μετὰ μικρὸν πάλιν οἱ παρεστῶτες ἔλεγον τῷ Πέτρῳ Ἀληθῶς ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖος εἶ ‹καὶ λαλιά σου ὁμοιάζει›
Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”71 δὲ ἤρξατο ἀναθεματίζειν καὶ ὀμνύναι ὅτι Οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὃν λέγετε
A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.72καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκ δευτέρου ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν Καὶ ἀνεμνήσθη Πέτρος τὸ ῥῆμα ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα δὶς φωνῆσαι τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ καὶ ἐπιβαλὼν ἔκλαιεν
