The Descendants of Esau

This is the account of Esau

Esau, Isaac’s firstborn and Jacob’s twin brother, became the father of a distinct line of descendants. His family history shows that God fulfilled His promise to make Abraham the father of many nations, even through the branch that did not carry the covenant line. Esau’s earlier loss of the birthright and blessing did not remove God’s providential care or prevent his descendants from becoming a people.

(that is, Edom).

Esau was also known as Edom, meaning “red,” a name linked to the red stew for which he traded his birthright. His descendants settled in the mountainous region southeast of the Dead Sea. From them came the Edomite nation, a frequent neighbor and opponent of Israel. The separate identification of Esau with Edom prepares for the record of a people whose history remained closely connected to Israel through their common ancestry.

Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan:

The Kings of Edom

These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom

Edom was the nation descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother, settled in the region south and southeast of the Dead Sea around Mount Seir. Its line of kings shows that Edom had an established national government and political order while Israel was still organized by tribes and patriarchal families.

1Ch 1:43-50 These are the kings who reigned in the land…
Num 24:18-19 Edom will become a possession, as will Seir, his enemy;…
2Sa 8:13-14 And David made a name for himself when he returned…

before any king reigned over the Israelites:

Israel’s monarchy did not begin until Saul’s reign, followed by David and Solomon. Edom’s earlier kingship marks the differing development of the two related nations and confirms that Esau’s descendants had become a recognized nation.

Bela son of Beor

Bela, whose name means “destruction” or “devouring,” appears first in the list of kings who ruled Edom before Israel had a king. His identification as Beor’s son preserves the royal line and distinguishes him from later individuals with similar names. He ruled among the descendants of Esau, whose territory lay south and east of the Dead Sea.

Num 24:3 “This is the prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,…
Num 31:8 Among the slain were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba…
Jos 13:22 The Israelites also killed the diviner Balaam son of Beor…

Edom had an established monarchy and organized centers of rule well before Israel’s united kingdom. Its position near major trade routes gave the nation political and economic importance, though its relationship with Israel was often marked by hostility.

1Ch 1:45 When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites…

Dinhabah served as Bela’s royal city and likely functioned as a center of administration within Edom. Although its precise location is no longer known, its inclusion records Edom’s historical rulers and cities as real places within the land of Esau.

Husham from the land of the Temanites

Husham became king. He was from the land of the Temanites, an important district of Edom associated with wisdom and influence. His rise shows that Edom’s kings came from different parts of the nation rather than from a single fixed dynasty.

Shaul from Rehoboth on the Euphrates

Shaul came from Rehoboth, meaning “broad places,” a settlement associated with the Euphrates region, showing that Edom’s rulers could have connections beyond Edom itself. Such links reflect the movement of people and influence among the kingdoms of the ancient Near East.

The mention of Hadad’s wife, Mehetabel, meaning “God makes happy,” and her father, Matred, meaning “pushing forward,” preserves the family connections of Edom’s royal house and highlights the importance of women in lineage and inheritance.
