1  וַיִּבְרַ֣ח (And fled) דָּוִ֔ד (David) מִנֹּוִות (from Naioth) בָּרָמָ֑ה (in Ramah), וַיָּבֹ֞א (and he came) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (and said) לִפְנֵ֣י (to) יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן (Jonathan), מֶ֤ה (What) עָשִׂ֙יתִי֙ (have I done)? מֶֽה־ (What is) עֲוֺנִ֤י (my iniquity)? וּמֶֽה־ (And what is) חַטָּאתִי֙ (my sin) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) אָבִ֔יךָ (your father), כִּ֥י (that) מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ (he is seeking) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשִֽׁי׃ (my life)?

2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And Jonathan said) ל֣וֹ (to him) חָלִילָה֮ (Far be it)! לֹ֣א (Not) תָמוּת֒ (you shall die)! הִנֵּ֡ה (Behold), לוֹ־ (not) עָשָׂה (will do) אָבִ֜י (my father) דָּבָ֣ר (a thing) גָּד֗וֹל (great) א֚וֹ (or) דָּבָ֣ר (a thing) קָטֹ֔ן (small), וְלֹ֥א (and without) יִגְלֶ֖ה (first telling) אֶת־ (-) אָזְנִ֑י (me). וּמַדּוּעַ֩ (And why) יַסְתִּ֨יר (should hide) אָבִ֥י (my father) מִמֶּ֛נִּי (from me) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֖ה (this). אֵ֥ין (Not) זֹֽאת׃ (this is so).

3  וַיִּשָּׁבַ֨ע (And took an oath) ע֜וֹד (again) דָּוִ֗ד (David), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), יָדֹ֨עַ (Knowing) יָדַ֜ע (knows) אָבִ֗יךָ (your father) כִּֽי־ (that) מָצָ֤אתִי (I have found) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ (in your eyes), וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (and he has said), אַל־ (Not) יֵֽדַע־ (do let know) זֹ֥את (this) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan), פֶּן־ (lest) יֵֽעָצֵ֑ב (he be grieved). וְאוּלָ֗ם (But truly) חַי־ (as lives) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), וְחֵ֣י (and as lives) נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ (your soul), כִּ֣י (but) כְפֶ֔שַׂע (a step is) בֵּינִ֖י (between me) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) הַמָּֽוֶת׃ (death).

4  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֑ד (David), מַה־ (What) תֹּאמַ֥ר (says) נַפְשְׁךָ֖ (your soul), וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ (I will do) לָּֽךְ׃פ (for you).

5  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֜ד (David) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן (Jonathan), הִֽנֵּה־ (Indeed), חֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (the New Moon) מָחָ֔ר (tomorrow is), וְאָנֹכִ֛י (and I) יָשֹׁב־ (sitting) אֵשֵׁ֥ב (shall sit) עִם־ (with) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) לֶאֱכ֑וֹל (to eat). וְשִׁלַּחְתַּ֙נִי֙ (And let me go), וְנִסְתַּרְתִּ֣י (that I may hide) בַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field) עַ֖ד (until) הָעֶ֥רֶב (the evening) הַשְּׁלִשִֽׁית׃ (the third). 6  אִם־ (If) פָּקֹ֥ד (missing) יִפְקְדֵ֖נִי (misses me) אָבִ֑יךָ (your father), וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ (and say), נִשְׁאֹל֩ (Asked) נִשְׁאַ֨ל (asking) מִמֶּ֤נִּי (from me) דָוִד֙ (David) לָרוּץ֙ (to run to) בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) לֶ֣חֶם (lehem) עִיר֔וֹ (his city), כִּ֣י (for) זֶ֧בַח (a sacrifice) הַיָּמִ֛ים (yearly) שָׁ֖ם (is there) לְכָל־ (for all) הַמִּשְׁפָּחָֽה׃ (of the clan). 7  אִם־ (If) כֹּ֥ה (thus) יֹאמַ֛ר (he says) ט֖וֹב (Good), שָׁל֣וֹם (will be safe) לְעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (your servant). וְאִם־ (But if) חָרֹ֤ה (being angry) יֶֽחֱרֶה֙ (he is angry) ל֔וֹ (to him), דַּ֕ע (then be sure) כִּֽי־ (that) כָלְתָ֥ה (is determined) הָרָעָ֖ה (the evil) מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃ (by him). 8  וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ (Therefore you shall deal) חֶ֙סֶד֙ (kindly) עַל־ (with) עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ (your servant), כִּ֚י (for) בִּבְרִ֣ית (into a covenant) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הֵבֵ֥אתָ (you have brought) אֶֽת־ (-) עַבְדְּךָ֖ (your servant) עִמָּ֑ךְ (with you). וְאִם־ (And if) יֶשׁ־ (there is) בִּ֤י (in me) עָוֺן֙ (iniquity), הֲמִיתֵ֣נִי (kill me) אַ֔תָּה (yourself); וְעַד־ (and for) אָבִ֖יךָ (to your father) לָמָּה־ (what) זֶּ֥ה (is this) תְבִיאֵֽנִי׃פ (that you should bring me).

9  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan), חָלִ֣ילָה (Far be it) לָּ֑ךְ (from you), כִּ֣י׀ (for) אִם־ (if) יָדֹ֣עַ (knowing) אֵדַ֗ע (I knew) כִּֽי־ (that) כָלְתָ֨ה (was determined) הָרָעָ֜ה (the evil) מֵעִ֤ם (by) אָבִי֙ (my father) לָב֣וֹא (to come) עָלֶ֔יךָ (upon you), וְלֹ֥א (and not) אֹתָ֖הּ (-) אַגִּ֥יד (would I tell) לָֽךְ׃ס (you).

Jonathan and David Renew Their Covenant

10  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) דָּוִד֙ (David) אֶל־ (to) יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan), מִ֖י (Who) יַגִּ֣יד (will tell) לִ֑י (me)? א֛וֹ (Or) מַה־ (what if) יַּעַנְךָ֥ (answers you) אָבִ֖יךָ (your father) קָשָֽׁה׃ס (roughly)?

11  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (Jonathan) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֔ד (David), לְכָ֖ה (Come), וְנֵצֵ֣א (and let us go out) הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה (into the field).

וַיֵּצְא֥וּ (And went out) שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם (the two of them) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ס (into the field). 12  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן (Jonathan) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֗ד (David), יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel)— כִּֽי־ (when) אֶחְקֹ֣ר (I have sounded out) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֗י (my father) כָּעֵ֤ת׀ (by this time) מָחָר֙ (tomorrow) הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֔ית (or the third), וְהִנֵּה־ (and indeed) ט֖וֹב (there is good) אֶל־ (toward) דָּוִ֑ד (David), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) אָז֙ (then) אֶשְׁלַ֣ח (I do send) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) וְגָלִ֖יתִי (and tell) אֶת־ (-) אָזְנֶֽךָ׃ (you). 13  כֹּֽה־ (And) יַעֲשֶׂה֩ (may do) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) לִֽיהוֹנָתָ֜ן (to Jonathan), וְכֹ֣ה (and thus) יֹסִ֗יף (may he add), כִּֽי־ (if) יֵיטִ֨ב (is good) אֶל־ (unto) אָבִ֤י (my father) אֶת־ (-) הָֽרָעָה֙ (the evil) עָלֶ֔יךָ (upon you), וְגָלִ֙יתִי֙ (and I will report it) אֶת־ (-) אָזְנֶ֔ךָ (to you) וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֖יךָ (and send you away), וְהָלַכְתָּ֣ (that you may go) לְשָׁל֑וֹם (in safety). וִיהִ֤י (And be) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) הָיָ֖ה (He has been) עִם־ (with) אָבִֽי׃ (my father). 14  וְלֹ֖א (And not) אִם־ (while) עוֹדֶ֣נִּי (I still) חָ֑י (live), וְלֹֽא־ (not) תַעֲשֶׂ֧ה (you shall only show) עִמָּדִ֛י (me) חֶ֥סֶד (loving devotion) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), וְלֹ֥א (that not) אָמֽוּת׃ (I may die). 15  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) תַכְרִ֧ת (you shall cut off) אֶֽת־ (-) חַסְדְּךָ֛ (your loving devotion) מֵעִ֥ם (from) בֵּיתִ֖י (my house) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָ֑ם (forever), וְלֹ֗א (and not) בְּהַכְרִ֤ת (has cut off) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) אֹיְבֵ֣י (of the enemies) דָוִ֔ד (of David) אִ֕ישׁ (each man) מֵעַ֖ל (of from) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the earth).

16  וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת (And cut) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan) עִם־ (with) בֵּ֣ית (the house) דָּוִ֑ד (of David), וּבִקֵּ֣שׁ (And may seek it) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִיַּ֖ד (at the hand) אֹיְבֵ֥י (of the enemies) דָוִֽד׃ (of David). 17  וַיּ֤וֹסֶף (And added) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (Jonathan) לְהַשְׁבִּ֣יעַ (to have vow) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֔ד (David) בְּאַהֲבָת֖וֹ (out of love) אֹת֑וֹ (for him), כִּֽי־ (for) אַהֲבַ֥ת (with the love) נַפְשׁ֖וֹ (of his own soul) אֲהֵבֽוֹ׃ס (he loved him).

18  וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ (And said) ל֥וֹ (to David) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan), מָחָ֣ר (Tomorrow is) חֹ֑דֶשׁ (the New Moon), וְנִפְקַ֕דְתָּ (and you will be missed) כִּ֥י (because) יִפָּקֵ֖ד (will be found empty) מוֹשָׁבֶֽךָ׃ (your seat). 19  וְשִׁלַּשְׁתָּ֙ (And on the third day) תֵּרֵ֣ד (go down) מְאֹ֔ד (quickly), וּבָאתָ֙ (and come) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֔וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) נִסְתַּ֥רְתָּ (you hid yourself) שָּׁ֖ם (there) בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֑ה (of the deed), וְיָ֣שַׁבְתָּ֔ (and remain) אֵ֖צֶל (by) הָאֶ֥בֶן (the stone) הָאָֽזֶל׃ (of Ezel). 20  וַאֲנִ֕י (And I) שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת (three) הַחִצִּ֖ים (arrows) צִדָּ֣ה (to the side) אוֹרֶ֑ה (will shoot), לְשַֽׁלַּֽח־ (sending them out) לִ֖י (as though) לְמַטָּרָֽה׃ (at a target). 21  וְהִנֵּה֙ (And there) אֶשְׁלַ֣ח (I will send) אֶת־ (-) הַנַּ֔עַר (a boy): לֵ֖ךְ (Go), מְצָ֣א (find) אֶת־ (-) הַחִצִּ֑ים (the arrows). אִם־ (If) אָמֹר֩ (in saying this) אֹמַ֨ר (I should say) לַנַּ֜עַר (to him), הִנֵּ֥ה (Look), הַחִצִּ֣ים׀ (the arrows are) מִמְּךָ֣ (away from you) וָהֵ֗נָּה (and here on this side), קָחֶ֧נּוּ׀ (take them) וָבֹ֛אָה (and come), כִּֽי־ (then) שָׁל֥וֹם (there is safety) לְךָ֛ (for you) וְאֵ֥ין (and there will be no) דָּבָ֖ר (matter), חַי־ (as lives) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 22  וְאִם־ (But if) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אֹמַר֙ (I say) לָעֶ֔לֶם (to the young man), הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), הַחִצִּ֖ים (the arrows are) מִמְּךָ֣ (away from you) וָהָ֑לְאָה (and further beyond), לֵ֕ךְ (then you must go), כִּ֥י (for) שִֽׁלַּחֲךָ֖ (has sent you away) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 23  וְהַ֨דָּבָ֔ר (And as for the matter) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבַּ֖רְנוּ (we have spoken of) אֲנִ֣י (I) וָאָ֑תָּה (and you), הִנֵּ֧ה (behold), יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בֵּינִ֥י (is between me) וּבֵינְךָ֖ (and between you) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃ס (forever).

24  וַיִּסָּתֵ֥ר (And hid) דָּוִ֖ד (David) בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה (in the field); וַיְהִ֣י (and had come) הַחֹ֔דֶשׁ (the New Moon). וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב (And sat down) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) עַל (by) הַלֶּ֖חֶם (the food) לֶאֱכֽוֹל׃ (to eat). 25  וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב (And sat) הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ (the king) עַל־ (on) מ֨וֹשָׁב֜וֹ (his seat) כְּפַ֣עַם׀ (as time) בְּפַ֗עַם (by time), אֶל־ (on) מוֹשַׁב֙ (a seat) הַקִּ֔יר (the by wall). וַיָּ֙קָם֙ (And arose) יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan), וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב (and sat) אַבְנֵ֖ר (Abner) מִצַּ֣ד (at the side) שָׁא֑וּל (of Saul); וַיִּפָּקֵ֖ד (and was found empty) מְק֥וֹם (the place) דָּוִֽד׃ (of David). 26  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) דִבֶּ֥ר (did say) שָׁא֛וּל (Saul) מְא֖וּמָה (anything) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֑וּא (that), כִּ֤י (for) אָמַר֙ (he said), מִקְרֶ֣ה (Something has happened) ה֔וּא (that he is) בִּלְתִּ֥י (not) טָה֛וֹר (clean) ה֖וּא (he); כִּֽי־ (surely) לֹ֥א (not) טָהֽוֹר׃ס (is clean).

27  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) מִֽמָּחֳרַ֤ת (on the next day), הַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (the New Moon), הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (the second), וַיִּפָּקֵ֖ד (was found empty) מְק֣וֹם (the place) דָּוִ֑דס (of David). וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) שָׁאוּל֙ (Saul) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן (Jonathan) בְּנ֔וֹ (his son), מַדּ֜וּעַ (Why) לֹא־ (not) בָ֧א (has come) בֶן־ (the son) יִשַׁ֛י (of Jesse) גַּם־ (either) תְּמ֥וֹל (yesterday) גַּם־ (or) הַיּ֖וֹם (today) אֶל־ (to) הַלָּֽחֶם׃ (eat)?

28  וַיַּ֥עַן (And answered) יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן (Jonathan) אֶת־ (-) שָׁא֑וּל (Saul), נִשְׁאֹ֨ל (Asked) נִשְׁאַ֥ל (asking) דָּוִ֛ד (David) מֵעִמָּדִ֖י (from me) עַד־ (to go to) בֵּ֥ית (Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem), 29  וַיֹּ֡אמֶר (and he said), שַׁלְּחֵ֣נִי (Let me go), נָ֡א (please), כִּ֣י (for) זֶבַח֩ (has a sacrifice planned) מִשְׁפָּחָ֨ה (the clan) לָ֜נוּ (for us) בָּעִ֗יר (in the city); וְה֤וּא (and himself) צִוָּֽה־ (has commanded) לִי֙ (to me) אָחִ֔י (my brother). וְעַתָּ֗ה (And) אִם־ (if) מָצָ֤אתִי (I have found) חֵן֙ (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ (in your eyes), אִמָּ֥לְטָה (may I go away), נָּ֖א (please), וְאֶרְאֶ֣ה (and see) אֶת־ (-) אֶחָ֑י (my brothers). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֣ן (thus) לֹא־ (not) בָ֔א (he has come) אֶל־ (to) שֻׁלְחַ֖ן (the table) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס (of the king).

Saul Seeks to Kill Jonathan

30  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was kindled) אַ֤ף (the anger) שָׁאוּל֙ (of Saul) בִּיה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן (against Jonathan), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) ל֔וֹ (to him), בֶּֽן־ (You son) נַעֲוַ֖ת (of a perverse) הַמַּרְדּ֑וּת (rebellious woman), הֲל֣וֹא (do not) יָדַ֗עְתִּי (I know) כִּֽי־ (that) בֹחֵ֤ר (have chosen) אַתָּה֙ (you) לְבֶן־ (the son) יִשַׁ֔י (of Jesse) לְבָ֨שְׁתְּךָ֔ (to your shame), וּלְבֹ֖שֶׁת (and to the shame) עֶרְוַ֥ת (of the nakedness) אִמֶּֽךָ׃ (of your mother)? 31  כִּ֣י (For) כָל־ (all) הַיָּמִ֗ים (the days) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) בֶּן־ (the son) יִשַׁי֙ (of Jesse) חַ֣י (lives) עַל־ (on) הָאֲדָמָ֔ה (the earth), לֹ֥א (not) תִכּ֖וֹן (shall be established) אַתָּ֣ה (you) וּמַלְכוּתֶ֑ךָ (and your kingdom). וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) שְׁלַ֨ח (send) וְקַ֤ח (and bring) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) אֵלַ֔י (to me), כִּ֥י (for) בֶן־ (a son) מָ֖וֶת (of death) הֽוּא׃ס (he is).

32  וַיַּ֙עַן֙ (And answered) יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan) אֶת־ (-) שָׁא֖וּל (Saul) אָבִ֑יו (his father), וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֛יו (to him), לָ֥מָּה (Why) יוּמַ֖ת (should he be killed)? מֶ֥ה (What) עָשָֽׂה׃ (has he done)?

33  וַיָּ֨טֶל (And cast) שָׁא֧וּל (Saul) אֶֽת־ (-) הַחֲנִ֛ית (a spear) עָלָ֖יו (at him) לְהַכֹּת֑וֹ (to kill him), וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ (and knew) יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן (Jonathan) כִּֽי־ (that) כָ֥לָה (was determined) הִ֛יא (it) מֵעִ֥ם (by) אָבִ֖יו (his father) לְהָמִ֥ית (to kill) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִֽד׃ס (David). 34  וַיָּ֧קָם (And arose) יְהוֹנָתָ֛ן (Jonathan) מֵעִ֥ם (from) הַשֻּׁלְחָ֖ן (the table) בָּחֳרִי־ (in the heat) אָ֑ף (of anger), וְלֹא־ (and not) אָכַ֞ל (he ate) בְּיוֹם־ (the day) הַחֹ֤דֶשׁ (of the new moon) הַשֵּׁנִי֙ (on the second) לֶ֔חֶם (food) כִּ֤י (for), נֶעְצַב֙ (he was grieved) אֶל־ (for) דָּוִ֔ד (David), כִּ֥י (because) הִכְלִמ֖וֹ (had treated him shamefully) אָבִֽיו׃ס (his father).

35  וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass) בַבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning), וַיֵּצֵ֧א (that went out) יְהוֹנָתָ֛ן (Jonathan) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (into the field) לְמוֹעֵ֣ד (for the appointment) דָּוִ֑ד (with David), וְנַ֥עַר (and a boy) קָטֹ֖ן (small) עִמּֽוֹ׃ (was with him). 36  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) לְנַעֲר֔וֹ (to his boy), רֻ֗ץ (Run), מְצָ֥א (find) נָא֙ (now) אֶת־ (-) הַ֣חִצִּ֔ים (the arrows) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) מוֹרֶ֑ה (shoot). הַנַּ֣עַר (The boy) רָ֔ץ (ran), וְהֽוּא־ (and he) יָרָ֥ה (shot) הַחֵ֖צִי (an arrow) לְהַעֲבִרֽוֹ׃ (beyond him).

37  וַיָּבֹ֤א (And had come) הַנַּ֙עַר֙ (the boy) עַד־ (to) מְק֣וֹם (the place where) הַחֵ֔צִי (the arrow was) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יָרָ֖ה (had shot) יְהוֹנָתָ֑ן (Jonathan), וַיִּקְרָ֨א (and cried out) יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן (Jonathan) אַחֲרֵ֤י (after) הַנַּ֙עַר֙ (the boy) וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and said), הֲל֥וֹא (Is not) הַחֵ֖צִי (the arrow) מִמְּךָ֥ (from you) וָהָֽלְאָה׃ (and beyond). 38  וַיִּקְרָ֤א (And cried out) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (Jonathan) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) הַנַּ֔עַר (the boy), מְהֵרָ֥ה (Hurry); ח֖וּשָׁה (hurry); אַֽל־ (not) תַּעֲמֹ֑ד (do delay). וַיְלַקֵּ֞ט (And gathered up) נַ֤עַר (the boy) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (of Jonathan) אֶת־ (-) הַחֵצִי (the arrows), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and came back) אֶל־ (to) אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ (his master).

39  וְהַנַּ֖עַר (And the boy) לֹֽא־ (not) יָדַ֣ע (did know) מְא֑וּמָה (anything); אַ֤ךְ (only) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (Jonathan) וְדָוִ֔ד (and David) יָדְע֖וּ (knew) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָֽר׃ (of the matter). 40  וַיִּתֵּ֤ן (And gave) יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ (Jonathan) אֶת־ (-) כֵּלָ֔יו (his weapons) אֶל־ (to) הַנַּ֖עַר (the boy) אֲשֶׁר־ (who was) ל֑וֹ (to him), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) ל֔וֹ (to him), לֵ֖ךְ (Go), הָבֵ֥יא (bring them) הָעִֽיר׃ (to the city).

41  הַנַּעַר֮ (The boy) בָּא֒ (had gone), וְדָוִ֗ד (and David) קָ֚ם (arose) מֵאֵ֣צֶל (from the side) הַנֶּ֔גֶב (at the south), וַיִּפֹּ֨ל (and he fell) לְאַפָּ֥יו (on his nostrils) אַ֛רְצָה (to the ground), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and he bowed down) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) פְּעָמִ֑ים (times). וַֽיִּשְּׁק֣וּ׀ (And they kissed) אִ֣ישׁ (one) אֶת־ (-) רֵעֵ֗הוּ (another). וַיִּבְכּוּ֙ (And they wept) אִ֣ישׁ (one) אֶת־ (-) רֵעֵ֔הוּ (together), עַד־ (but) דָּוִ֖ד (David) הִגְדִּֽיל׃ (did so more).

42  וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹנָתָ֛ן (Jonathan) לְדָוִ֖ד (to David), לֵ֣ךְ (Go) לְשָׁל֑וֹם (in peace), אֲשֶׁר֩ (since) נִשְׁבַּ֨עְנוּ (have sworn) שְׁנֵ֜ינוּ (the two) אֲנַ֗חְנוּ (of us) בְּשֵׁ֤ם (in the name) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) יִֽהְיֶ֣ה׀ (may be) בֵּינִ֣י (between me) וּבֵינֶ֗ךָ (and between you) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) זַרְעִ֛י (my seed) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) זַרְעֲךָ֖ (your seed) עַד־ (even to) עוֹלָֽם׃פ (forever). וַיָּ֖קָם (And he arose) וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ (and departed), וִיהוֹנָתָ֖ן (and Jonathan) בָּ֥א (went) הָעִֽיר׃ (into the city).
