The Second Plague: Frogs

1  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), בֹּ֖א (Go) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh) וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֵלָ֗יו (to him): כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), שַׁלַּ֥ח (Send out) אֶת־ () עַמִּ֖י (My people) וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ (that they may serve Me). 2  וְאִם־ (But if) מָאֵ֥ן (refuse) אַתָּ֖ה (you) לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ (to send them out), הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), אָנֹכִ֗י (I) נֹגֵ֛ף (am striking) אֶת־ () כָּל־ (all) גְּבוּלְךָ֖ (your territory) בַּֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃ (with the frogs). 3  וְשָׁרַ֣ץ (And shall teem) הַיְאֹר֮ (the River) צְפַרְדְּעִים֒ (with frogs), וְעָלוּ֙ (and they shall go up) וּבָ֣אוּ (and come) בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ (into your house), וּבַחֲדַ֥ר (and into the room) מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ (of your bed), וְעַל־ (and onto) מִטָּתֶ֑ךָ (your bed), וּבְבֵ֤ית (and into the house) עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your servants), וּבְעַמֶּ֔ךָ (and on your people), וּבְתַנּוּרֶ֖יךָ (and into your ovens), וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (and into your kneading bowls). 4  וּבְכָ֥ה (And on you) וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ (and on your people) וּבְכָל־ (and on all) עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ (your servants) יַעֲל֖וּ (shall come up) הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃ (the frogs).

5  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֒ (Moses), אֱמֹ֣ר (Say) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֗ן (Aaron), נְטֵ֤ה (Stretch out) אֶת־ () יָדְךָ֙ (your hand) בְּמַטֶּ֔ךָ (with your staff) עַל־ (over) הַ֨נְּהָרֹ֔ת (the streams), עַל־ (over) הַיְאֹרִ֖ים (the rivers), וְעַל־ (and over) הָאֲגַמִּ֑ים (the ponds), וְהַ֥עַל (and bring up) אֶת־ () הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים (the frogs) עַל־ (on) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

6  וַיֵּ֤ט (And stretched out) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) אֶת־ () יָד֔וֹ (his hand) עַ֖ל (over) מֵימֵ֣י (the waters) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וַתַּ֙עַל֙ (and came up) הַצְּפַרְדֵּ֔עַ (the frog) וַתְּכַ֖ס (and covered) אֶת־ () אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

7  וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ (And did) כֵ֥ן (so) הַֽחֲרְטֻמִּ֖ים (the magicians) בְּלָטֵיהֶ֑ם (with their secret arts), וַיַּעֲל֥וּ (and they brought up) אֶת־ () הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים (the frogs) עַל־ (on) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

8  וַיִּקְרָ֨א (And called) פַרְעֹ֜ה (Pharaoh) לְמֹשֶׁ֣ה (for Moses) וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֗ן (and for Aaron) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), הַעְתִּ֣ירוּ (Pray) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְיָסֵר֙ (that He may take away) הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים (the frogs) מִמֶּ֖נִּי (from me) וּמֵֽעַמִּ֑י (and from my people). וַאֲשַׁלְּחָה֙ (And I will send out) אֶת־ () הָעָ֔ם (the people), וְיִזְבְּח֖וּ (that they may sacrifice) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

9  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) לְפַרְעֹה֮ (to Pharaoh), הִתְפָּאֵ֣ר (Glorify yourself) עָלַי֒ (over me) לְמָתַ֣י׀ (for when) אַעְתִּ֣יר (shall I pray) לְךָ֗ (for you) וְלַעֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (and for your servants), וּֽלְעַמְּךָ֔ (and for your people), לְהַכְרִית֙ (to cut off) הַֽצֲפַרְדְּעִ֔ים (the frogs) מִמְּךָ֖ (from you) וּמִבָּתֶּ֑יךָ (and from your houses). רַ֥ק (Only) בַּיְאֹ֖ר (in the River) תִּשָּׁאַֽרְנָה׃ (they shall remain).

10  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), לְמָחָ֑ר (Tomorrow).

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said), כִּדְבָ֣רְךָ֔ (Let it be according to your word), לְמַ֣עַן (so that) תֵּדַ֔ע (you may know) כִּי־ (that) אֵ֖ין (there is none) כַּיהוָ֥ה (like YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ (our God). 11  וְסָר֣וּ (And shall depart) הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֗ים (the frogs) מִמְּךָ֙ (from you), וּמִבָּ֣תֶּ֔יךָ (and from your houses), וּמֵעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (and from your servants), וּמֵעַמֶּ֑ךָ (and from your people). רַ֥ק (Only) בַּיְאֹ֖ר (in the River) תִּשָּׁאַֽרְנָה׃ (they shall remain).

12  וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And went out) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן (and Aaron) מֵעִ֣ם (from) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh), וַיִּצְעַ֤ק (and cried out) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) עַל־ (concerning) דְּבַ֥ר (the matter) הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים (of the frogs) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) שָׂ֥ם (He had placed) לְפַרְעֹֽה׃ (upon Pharaoh). 13  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And did) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (of Moses), וַיָּמֻ֙תוּ֙ (and died) הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים (the frogs) מִן־ (from) הַבָּתִּ֥ים (the houses), מִן־ (from) הַחֲצֵרֹ֖ת (the courtyards), וּמִן־ (and from) הַשָּׂדֹֽת׃ (the fields). 14  וַיִּצְבְּר֥וּ (And they piled up) אֹתָ֖ם (them) חֳמָרִ֣ם (in heaps) חֳמָרִ֑ם (of heaps), וַתִּבְאַ֖שׁ (and stank) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land).

15  וַיַּ֣רְא (And saw) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh) כִּ֤י (that) הָֽיְתָה֙ (there was) הָֽרְוָחָ֔ה (relief), וְהַכְבֵּד֙ (and he made heavy) אֶת־ () לִבּ֔וֹ (his heart), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמַ֖ע (did listen) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

The Third Plague: Gnats

16  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֒ (Moses), אֱמֹר֙ (Say) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֔ן (Aaron), נְטֵ֣ה (Stretch out) אֶֽת־ () מַטְּךָ֔ (your staff), וְהַ֖ךְ (and strike) אֶת־ () עֲפַ֣ר (the dust) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land), וְהָיָ֥ה (and it shall become) לְכִנִּ֖ם (gnats) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

17  וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ (And they did) כֵ֗ן (so), וַיֵּט֩ (and stretched out) אַהֲרֹ֨ן (Aaron) אֶת־ () יָד֤וֹ (his hand) בְמַטֵּ֙הוּ֙ (with his staff) וַיַּךְ֙ (and struck) אֶת־ () עֲפַ֣ר (the dust) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), וַתְּהִי֙ (and it became) הַכִּנָּ֔ם (the gnat) בָּאָדָ֖ם (on the man) וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה (and on the beast). כָּל־ (All) עֲפַ֥ר (the dust) הָאָ֛רֶץ (of the land) הָיָ֥ה (became) כִנִּ֖ים (gnats) בְּכָל־ (in all) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

18  וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־ (And did) כֵ֨ן (so) הַחַרְטֻמִּ֧ים (the magicians) בְּלָטֵיהֶ֛ם (with their secret arts) לְהוֹצִ֥יא (to bring forth) אֶת־ () הַכִּנִּ֖ים (the gnats), וְלֹ֣א (not) יָכֹ֑לוּ (they could). וַתְּהִי֙ (And there was) הַכִּנָּ֔ם (the gnat) בָּאָדָ֖ם (on the man) וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה׃ (and on the beast).

19  וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ (And said) הַֽחַרְטֻמִּים֙ (the magicians) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh), אֶצְבַּ֥ע (The finger) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) הִ֑וא (it is). וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק (And was strengthened) לֵב־ (the heart) פַּרְעֹה֙ (of Pharaoh), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) שָׁמַ֣ע (he did listen) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had spoken) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

The Fourth Plague: Flies

20  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), הַשְׁכֵּ֤ם (Rise early) בַּבֹּ֙קֶר֙ (in the morning) וְהִתְיַצֵּב֙ (and stand) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) פַרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) הִנֵּ֖ה (behold) יוֹצֵ֣א (he is going out) הַמָּ֑יְמָה (to the water). וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (And say) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): שַׁלַּ֥ח (Send out) עַמִּ֖י (My people), וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי׃ (that they may serve Me). 21  כִּ֣י (For) אִם־ (if) אֵינְךָ֮ (not) מְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ (you will send out) אֶת־ () עַמִּי֒ (My people), הִנְנִי֩ (behold), מַשְׁלִ֨יחַ (I am sending) בְּךָ֜ (on you), וּבַעֲבָדֶ֧יךָ (and on your servants), וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֛ (and on your people), וּבְבָתֶּ֖יךָ (and into your houses), אֶת־ () הֶעָרֹ֑ב (the swarm). וּמָ֨לְא֜וּ (And shall be full) בָּתֵּ֤י (the houses) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) אֶת־ (of) הֶ֣עָרֹ֔ב (the swarm), וְגַ֥ם (and also) הָאֲדָמָ֖ה (the ground) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) הֵ֥ם (they are) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (on it).

22  וְהִפְלֵיתִי֩ (And I will set apart) בַיּ֨וֹם (in the day) הַה֜וּא (that) אֶת־ () אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) גֹּ֗שֶׁן (of Goshen), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) עַמִּי֙ (My people) עֹמֵ֣ד (are standing) עָלֶ֔יהָ (in), לְבִלְתִּ֥י (that no) הֱיֽוֹת־ (shall be) שָׁ֖ם (there) עָרֹ֑ב (swarm), לְמַ֣עַן (in order that) תֵּדַ֔ע (you may know) כִּ֛י (that) אֲנִ֥י (I), יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), בְּקֶ֥רֶב (am in the midst) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land). 23  וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י (And I will set) פְדֻ֔ת (redemption) בֵּ֥ין (between) עַמִּ֖י (My people) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) עַמֶּ֑ךָ (your people). לְמָחָ֥ר (Tomorrow) יִהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) הָאֹ֥ת (the sign) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

24  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And did) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) כֵּ֔ן (so), וַיָּבֹא֙ (and came) עָרֹ֣ב (and swarms) כָּבֵ֔ד (heavy) בֵּ֥יתָה (into the house) פַרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh), וּבֵ֣ית (and the house) עֲבָדָ֑יו (of his servants). וּבְכָל־ (And into all) אֶ֧רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) תִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת (was ruined) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from before) הֶעָרֹֽב׃ (the swarm).

25  וַיִּקְרָ֣א (And called) פַרְעֹ֔ה (Pharaoh) אֶל־ (for) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֑ן (and for Aaron), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), לְכ֛וּ (Go), זִבְח֥וּ (sacrifice) לֵֽאלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (to your⁺ God) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (in the land).

26  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), לֹ֤א (Not) נָכוֹן֙ (it is right) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) כֵּ֔ן (so), כִּ֚י (for) תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת (the abomination) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) נִזְבַּ֖ח (we shall sacrifice) לַיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God). הֵ֣ן (Behold) נִזְבַּ֞ח (shall we sacrifice) אֶת־ () תּוֹעֲבַ֥ת (the abomination) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם (before their eyes), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִסְקְלֻֽנוּ׃ (will they stone us)? 27  דֶּ֚רֶךְ (A journey) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (of three) יָמִ֔ים (days) נֵלֵ֖ךְ (we will go) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (into the wilderness), וְזָבַ֙חְנוּ֙ (and we will sacrifice) לַֽיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) יֹאמַ֥ר (He says) אֵלֵֽינוּ׃ (to us).

28  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) פַּרְעֹ֗ה (Pharaoh), אָנֹכִ֞י (I) אֲשַׁלַּ֤ח (will send out) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) וּזְבַחְתֶּ֞ם (and you⁺ shall sacrifice) לַיהוָ֤ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness). רַ֛ק (Only) הַרְחֵ֥ק (very) לֹא־ (not) תַרְחִ֖יקוּ (you⁺ shall far away) לָלֶ֑כֶת (go). הַעְתִּ֖ירוּ (Pray) בַּעֲדִֽי׃ (for me).

29  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), אָנֹכִ֜י (I) יוֹצֵ֤א (am going out) מֵֽעִמָּךְ֙ (from you), וְהַעְתַּרְתִּ֣י (and I will pray) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְסָ֣ר (and shall depart) הֶעָרֹ֗ב (the swarm) מִפַּרְעֹ֛ה (from Pharaoh), מֵעֲבָדָ֥יו (from his servants), וּמֵעַמּ֖וֹ (and from his people) מָחָ֑ר (tomorrow). רַ֗ק (But) אַל־ (not) יֹסֵ֤ף (again) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) הָתֵ֔ל (deal deceitfully) לְבִלְתִּי֙ (in not) שַׁלַּ֣ח (sending out) אֶת־ () הָעָ֔ם (the people) לִזְבֹּ֖חַ (to sacrifice) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

30  וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And went out) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) מֵעִ֣ם (from) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh) וַיֶּעְתַּ֖ר (and prayed) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 31  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And did) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (of Moses), וַיָּ֙סַר֙ (and He removed) הֶעָרֹ֔ב (the swarm) מִפַּרְעֹ֖ה (from Pharaoh), מֵעֲבָדָ֣יו (from his servants), וּמֵעַמּ֑וֹ (and from his people). לֹ֥א (Not) נִשְׁאַ֖ר (remained) אֶחָֽד׃ (one). 32  וַיַּכְבֵּ֤ד (And made heavy) פַּרְעֹה֙ (Pharaoh) אֶת־ () לִבּ֔וֹ (his heart) גַּ֖ם (also) בַּפַּ֣עַם (at the time) הַזֹּ֑את (this), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שִׁלַּ֖ח (he did send out) אֶת־ () הָעָֽם׃פ (the people).
