Boaz Meets Ruth

1  וּֽלְנָעֳמִ֞י (And Naomi) מְיֻדָּע (had a kinsman) לְאִישָׁ֗הּ (of her husband), אִ֚ישׁ (a man) גִּבּ֣וֹר (of great) חַ֔יִל (wealth), מִמִּשְׁפַּ֖חַת (from the family) אֱלִימֶ֑לֶךְ (of Elimelech). וּשְׁמ֖וֹ (And His name) בֹּֽעַז׃ (was Boa z).

2  וַתֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) ר֨וּת (Ruth) הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֜ה (the Moabitess) אֶֽל־ (to) נָעֳמִ֗י (Naomi), אֵֽלְכָה־ (Let me go) נָּ֤א (please) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (to the field), וַאֲלַקֳטָּ֣ה (and glean) בַשִׁבֳּלִ֔ים (among the ears of grain) אַחַ֕ר (after one) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (in whose) אֶמְצָא־ (I may find) חֵ֖ן (favor) בְּעֵינָ֑יו (eyes).

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר (And she said) לָ֖הּ (to her) לְכִ֥י (Go), בִתִּֽי׃ (my daughter).

3  וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ (And she went), וַתָּבוֹא֙ (and she came), וַתְּלַקֵּ֣ט (and she gleaned) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the field) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) הַקֹּצְרִ֑ים (the reapers). וַיִּ֣קֶר (And she happened) מִקְרֶ֔הָ (to come) חֶלְקַ֤ת (to the part) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field) לְבֹ֔עַז (belonging to Boaz), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who was) מִמִּשְׁפַּ֥חַת (from the family) אֱלִימֶֽלֶךְ׃ (of Elimelech).

4  וְהִנֵּה־ (And behold), בֹ֗עַז (Boaz) בָּ֚א (came) מִבֵּ֣ית (from Beth-) לֶ֔חֶם (lehem) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and said) לַקּוֹצְרִ֖ים (to the reapers), יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH be) עִמָּכֶ֑ם (with you⁺)!

וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ (And they answered) ל֖וֹ (him) יְבָרֶכְךָ֥ (Does bless you) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

5  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) בֹּ֙עַז֙ (Boaz) לְנַעֲר֔וֹ (to his young man) הַנִּצָּ֖ב (who was set) עַל־ (over) הַקּֽוֹצְרִ֑ים (the reapers), לְמִ֖י (To whom is) הַנַּעֲרָ֥ה (the young woman) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this)?

6  וַיַּ֗עַן (And answered) הַנַּ֛עַר (the servant) הַנִּצָּ֥ב (who was set) עַל־ (over) הַקּוֹצְרִ֖ים (the reapers), וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), נַעֲרָ֤ה (A young women), מֽוֹאֲבִיָּה֙ (a Moabitess) הִ֔יא (she is), הַשָּׁ֥בָה (the one returning) עִֽם־ (with) נָעֳמִ֖י (Naomi) מִשְּׂדֵ֥ה (from a field) מוֹאָֽב׃ (of Moab). 7  וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (And she said), אֲלַקֳטָה־ (Let me glean) נָּא֙ (please) וְאָסַפְתִּ֣י (and gather) בָֽעֳמָרִ֔ים (among the sheaves) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) הַקּוֹצְרִ֑ים (the reapers). וַתָּב֣וֹא (And she came) וַֽתַּעֲמ֗וֹד (and remained) מֵאָ֤ז (from) הַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ (the morning) וְעַד־ (and until) עַ֔תָּה (now), זֶ֛ה (though) שִׁבְתָּ֥הּ (she rested) הַבַּ֖יִת (in the house) מְעָֽט׃ (a little).

8  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) בֹּ֨עַז (Boaz) אֶל־ (to) ר֜וּת (Ruth), הֲל֧וֹא (Will not) שָׁמַ֣עַתְּ (you listen), בִּתִּ֗י (my daughter)? אַל־ (Not) תֵּלְכִי֙ (go) לִלְקֹט֙ (to glean) בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה (in a field) אַחֵ֔ר (another), וְגַ֛ם (and also) לֹ֥א (not) תַעֲבוּרִ֖י (go) מִזֶּ֑ה (from this place), וְכֹ֥ה (and thus) תִדְבָּקִ֖ין (you shall cling) עִם־ (together with) נַעֲרֹתָֽי׃ (my young women). 9  עֵינַ֜יִךְ (Let your eyes be) בַּשָּׂדֶ֤ה (in the field) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יִקְצֹרוּן֙ (they are reaping), וְהָלַ֣כְתִּ (and go) אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן (after them). הֲל֥וֹא (Have not) צִוִּ֛יתִי (I commanded) אֶת־ (-) הַנְּעָרִ֖ים (the young men) לְבִלְתִּ֣י (not) נָגְעֵ֑ךְ (to touch you)? וְצָמִ֗ת (And you are thirsty), וְהָלַכְתְּ֙ (and you shall go) אֶל־ (to) הַכֵּלִ֔ים (the vessels), וְשָׁתִ֕ית (and you shall drink) מֵאֲשֶׁ֥ר (from what) יִשְׁאֲב֖וּן (draw) הַנְּעָרִֽים׃ (the young men).

10  וַתִּפֹּל֙ (And she fell) עַל־ (on) פָּנֶ֔יהָ (her face) וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and she bowed herself) אָ֑רְצָה (to the earth) וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), מַדּוּעַ֩ (Why) מָצָ֨אתִי (have I found) חֵ֤ן (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ (in your eyes), לְהַכִּירֵ֔נִי (that you should take notice of me)? וְאָּנֹכִ֖י (And I am) נָכְרִיָּֽה׃ (a foreigner).

11  וַיַּ֤עַן (And answered) בֹּ֙עַז֙ (Boaz) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לָ֔הּ (to her), הֻגֵּ֨ד (Being declared) הֻגַּ֜ד (it has been declared) לִ֗י (to me) כֹּ֤ל (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשִׂית֙ (you have done) אֶת־ (with) חֲמוֹתֵ֔ךְ (your mother-in-law) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) מ֣וֹת (the death) אִישֵׁ֑ךְ (of your husband), וַתַּֽעַזְבִ֞י (and how you have left) אָּבִ֣יךְ (your father) וְאִמֵּ֗ךְ (and your mother) וְאֶ֙רֶץ֙ (and the land) מֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֔ךְ (of your birth), וַתֵּ֣לְכִ֔י (and have come) אֶל־ (to) עַ֕ם (a people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) לֹא־ (not) יָדַ֖עַתְּ (you did know) תְּמ֥וֹל (yesterday) שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ (and the day before yesterday). 12  יְשַׁלֵּ֥ם (Does repay) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) פָּעֳלֵ֑ךְ (your work), וּתְהִ֨י (and may you receive) מַשְׂכֻּרְתֵּ֜ךְ (your wages) שְׁלֵמָ֗ה (full) מֵעִ֤ם (from) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁר־ (whose) בָּ֖את (you have come) לַחֲס֥וֹת (to take refuge) תַּֽחַת־ (under) כְּנָפָֽיו׃ (wings).

13  וַ֠תֹּאמֶר (And she said), אֶמְצָא־ (Let me find) חֵ֨ן (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֤יךָ (in your eyes), אֲדֹנִי֙ (my lord). כִּ֣י (For) נִֽחַמְתָּ֔נִי (you have comforted me) וְכִ֥י (and) דִבַּ֖רְתָּ (have spoken) עַל־ (to) לֵ֣ב (the heart) שִׁפְחָתֶ֑ךָ (of your maidservant), וְאָנֹכִי֙ (and I) לֹ֣א (not) אֶֽהְיֶ֔ה (am) כְּאַחַ֖ת (like one) שִׁפְחֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (of your maidservants).

14  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) לָ֨ה (to her) בֹ֜עַז (Boaz) לְעֵ֣ת (at the time) הָאֹ֗כֶל (of food), גֹּ֤שִֽׁי (Come) הֲלֹם֙ (here) וְאָכַ֣לְתְּ (and eat) מִן־ (from) הַלֶּ֔חֶם (the bread), וְטָבַ֥לְתְּ (and dip) פִּתֵּ֖ךְ (your piece of bread) בַּחֹ֑מֶץ (in the vinegar). וַתֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (And she sat) מִצַּ֣ד (beside) הַקּֽוֹצְרִ֔ים (the reapers), וַיִּצְבָּט־ (and he passed) לָ֣הּ (to her) קָלִ֔י (roasted grain), וַתֹּ֥אכַל (and she ate) וַתִּשְׂבַּ֖ע (and was satisfied) וַתֹּתַֽר׃ (and she had some left over).

15  וַתָּ֖קָם (And she rose up) לְלַקֵּ֑ט (to glean), וַיְצַו֩ (and commanded) בֹּ֨עַז (Boaz) אֶת־ (-) נְעָרָ֜יו (his young men), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), גַּ֣ם (Even) בֵּ֧ין (among) הָֽעֳמָרִ֛ים (the sheaves) תְּלַקֵּ֖ט (let her glean), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תַכְלִימֽוּהָ׃ (shame her). 16  וְגַ֛ם (And also) שֹׁל־ (drawing) תָּשֹׁ֥לּוּ (you⁺ shall draw out) לָ֖הּ (for her) מִן־ (from) הַצְּבָתִ֑ים (the bundles) וַעֲזַבְתֶּ֥ם (and you⁺ shall leave them), וְלִקְּטָ֖ה (and shall let her glean). וְלֹ֥א (And not) תִגְעֲרוּ־ (shall you⁺ rebuke) בָֽהּ׃ (her).

17  וַתְּלַקֵּ֥ט (And she gleaned) בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה (in the field) עַד־ (until) הָעָ֑רֶב (the evening). וַתַּחְבֹּט֙ (And she beat out) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) לִקֵּ֔טָה (she had gleaned), וַיְהִ֖י (and it was) כְּאֵיפָ֥ה (about an ephah) שְׂעֹרִֽים׃ (of barley). 18  וַתִּשָּׂא֙ (And she took it up) וַתָּב֣וֹא (and went) הָעִ֔יר (into the city), וַתֵּ֥רֶא (and saw) חֲמוֹתָ֖הּ (her mother-in-law) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) לִקֵּ֑טָה (she had gleaned). וַתּוֹצֵא֙ (And she brought out) וַתִּתֶּן־ (and gave) לָ֔הּ (to her) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) הוֹתִ֖רָה (she had left over) מִשָּׂבְעָֽהּ׃ (from being satisfied).

19  וַתֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) לָ֨הּ (to her) חֲמוֹתָ֜הּ (her mother-in-law), אֵיפֹ֨ה (Where) לִקַּ֤טְתְּ (have you gleaned) הַיּוֹם֙ (today), וְאָ֣נָה (and where) עָשִׂ֔ית (did you work)? יְהִ֥י (Be the one) מַכִּירֵ֖ךְ (who took notice of you) בָּר֑וּךְ (blessed)

וַתַּגֵּ֣ד (and she told) לַחֲמוֹתָ֗הּ (her mother-in-law) אֵ֤ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) עָשְׂתָה֙ (she had worked) עִמּ֔וֹ (with), וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), שֵׁ֤ם (The name) הָאִישׁ֙ (of the man) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (whom) עָשִׂ֧יתִי (I worked) עִמּ֛וֹ (with) הַיּ֖וֹם (today) בֹּֽעַז׃ (is Boa z).

20  וַתֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) נָעֳמִ֜י (Naomi) לְכַלָּתָ֗הּ (to her daughter-in-law), בָּר֥וּךְ (Blessed be) הוּא֙ (he) לַיהוָ֔ה (by YHWH), אֲשֶׁר֙ (who) לֹא־ (not) עָזַ֣ב (has forsaken) חַסְדּ֔וֹ (His kindness) אֶת־ (with) הַחַיִּ֖ים (the living) וְאֶת־ (and with) הַמֵּתִ֑ים (the dead). וַתֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) לָ֣הּ (to her) נָעֳמִ֗י (Naomi) קָר֥וֹב (A relation) לָ֙נוּ֙ (of ours) הָאִ֔ישׁ (is the man). מִֽגֹּאֲלֵ֖נוּ (One of our kinsman-redeemers) הֽוּא׃ (he is).

21  וַתֹּ֖אמֶר (And said) ר֣וּת (Ruth) הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֑ה (the Moabitess), גַּ֣ם׀ (Also) כִּי־ (surely) אָמַ֣ר (he said) אֵלַ֗י (to me), עִם־ (With) הַנְּעָרִ֤ים (the young men) אֲשֶׁר־ (who are) לִי֙ (to me), תִּדְבָּקִ֔ין (you shall cling) עַ֣ד (until) אִם־ (that) כִּלּ֔וּ (they have finished) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַקָּצִ֖יר (the harvest) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) לִֽי׃ (unto me).

22  וַתֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) נָעֳמִ֖י (Naomi) אֶל־ (to) ר֣וּת (Ruth) כַּלָּתָ֑הּ (her daughter-in-law), ט֣וֹב (It is good), בִּתִּ֗י (my daughter), כִּ֤י (that) תֵֽצְאִי֙ (you go out) עִם־ (with) נַ֣עֲרוֹתָ֔יו (his young women), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִפְגְּעוּ־ (they will fall) בָ֖ךְ (upon you) בְּשָׂדֶ֥ה (in field) אַחֵֽר׃ (another).

23  וַתִּדְבַּ֞ק (And she clung) בְּנַעֲר֥וֹת (with the young women) בֹּ֙עַז֙ (of Boaz) לְלַקֵּ֔ט (to glean) עַד־ (until) כְּל֥וֹת (the end) קְצִֽיר־ (of harvest) הַשְּׂעֹרִ֖ים (of the barley) וּקְצִ֣יר (and of harvest) הַֽחִטִּ֑ים (of the wheat). וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב (And she dwelt) אֶת־ (with) חֲמוֹתָֽהּ׃ (her mother-in-law).
