The Bride and Her Beloved

The Bridegroom

1  בָּ֣אתִי (I have come) לְגַנִּי֮ (to my garden), אֲחֹתִ֣י (my sister), כַלָּה֒ (my bride);

אָרִ֤יתִי (I have plucked) מוֹרִי֙ (my myrrh) עִם־ (with) בְּשָׂמִ֔י (my spice).

אָכַ֤לְתִּי (I have eaten) יַעְרִי֙ (my honeycomb) עִם־ (with) דִּבְשִׁ֔י (my honey);

שָׁתִ֥יתִי (I have drunk) יֵינִ֖י (my wine) עִם־ (with) חֲלָבִ֑י (my milk).

The Friends

אִכְל֣וּ (Eat), רֵעִ֔ים (friends), שְׁת֥וּ (drink).

וְשִׁכְר֖וּ (And drink freely), דּוֹדִֽים׃ס (O beloved ones).

The Bride

2  אֲנִ֥י (I) יְשֵׁנָ֖ה (was asleep), וְלִבִּ֣י (and my heart) עֵ֑ר (was aroused).

ק֣וֹל׀ (A sound)! דּוֹדִ֣י (My beloved), דוֹפֵ֗ק (is knocking):

פִּתְחִי־ (Open) לִ֞י (to me) אֲחֹתִ֤י (my sister), רַעְיָתִי֙ (my darling),

יוֹנָתִ֣י (my dove), תַמָּתִ֔י (my flawless one).

שֶׁרֹּאשִׁי֙ (For my head) נִמְלָא־ (is full) טָ֔ל (of dew),

קְוֻּצּוֹתַ֖י (my locks) רְסִ֥יסֵי (of the drops) לָֽיְלָה׃ (of the night).

3  פָּשַׁ֙טְתִּי֙ (I have taken off) אֶת־ (-) כֻּתָּנְתִּ֔י (my garment);

אֵיכָ֖כָה (how) אֶלְבָּשֶׁ֑נָּה (do I put it on)?

רָחַ֥צְתִּי (I have washed) אֶת־ (-) רַגְלַ֖י (my feet);

אֵיכָ֥כָה (how) אֲטַנְּפֵֽם׃ (do I soil them).

4  דּוֹדִ֗י (My beloved) שָׁלַ֤ח (stretched out) יָדוֹ֙ (his hand) מִן־ (to) הַחֹ֔ר (the latch),

וּמֵעַ֖י (and my bowels) הָמ֥וּ (murmered) עָלָֽיו׃ (for him).

5  קַ֥מְתִּֽי (Arose) אֲנִ֖י (I) לִפְתֹּ֣חַ (to open up) לְדוֹדִ֑י (for my beloved),

וְיָדַ֣י (and my hands) נָֽטְפוּ־ (dripped) מ֗וֹר (with myrrh),

וְאֶצְבְּעֹתַי֙ (and my fingers) מ֣וֹר (with myrrh) עֹבֵ֔ר (covered over)

עַ֖ל (on) כַּפּ֥וֹת (the palms) הַמַּנְעֽוּל׃ (of the bolt).

6  פָּתַ֤חְתִּֽי (Opened) אֲנִי֙ (I) לְדוֹדִ֔י (for my beloved),

וְדוֹדִ֖י (and my beloved) חָמַ֣ק (had turned away) עָבָ֑ר (and had gone)!

נַפְשִׁי֙ (My heart) יָֽצְאָ֣ה (went forth) בְדַבְּר֔וֹ (at his speaking).

בִּקַּשְׁתִּ֙יהוּ֙ (I sought him), וְלֹ֣א (not) מְצָאתִ֔יהוּ (could I find him);

קְרָאתִ֖יו (I called to him) וְלֹ֥א (not) עָנָֽנִי׃ (did he answer me).

7  מְצָאֻ֧נִי (Then found me) הַשֹּׁמְרִ֛ים (the guards) הַסֹּבְבִ֥ים (in their going round) בָּעִ֖יר (about the city).

הִכּ֣וּנִי (They struck me); פְצָע֑וּנִי (they bruised me).

נָשְׂא֤וּ (They lifted) אֶת־ (-)

רְדִידִי֙ (my wrap) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from me), שֹׁמְרֵ֖י (the guards) הַחֹמֽוֹת׃ (of the walls).

8  הִשְׁבַּ֥עְתִּי (I adjure) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺), בְּנ֣וֹת (O daughters) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem),

אִֽם־ (if) תִּמְצְאוּ֙ (you⁺ find) אֶת־ (-) דּוֹדִ֔י (my beloved),

מַה־ (what) תַּגִּ֣ידוּ (you⁺ should declare) ל֔וֹ (to him)?

שֶׁחוֹלַ֥ת (Am sick) אַהֲבָ֖ה (with love) אָֽנִי׃ (I).

9  מַה־ (How is) דּוֹדֵ֣ךְ (your beloved) מִדּ֔וֹד (above any beloved),

הַיָּפָ֖ה (O beautiful one) בַּנָּשִׁ֑ים (among the women)?

מַה־ (How is) דּוֹדֵ֣ךְ (your beloved) מִדּ֔וֹד (above any beloved),

שֶׁכָּ֖כָה (that thus) הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃ (you adjure us)?

The Bride

10  דּוֹדִ֥י (My beloved) צַח֙ (is dazzling) וְאָד֔וֹם (and ruddy),

דָּג֖וּל (distinguished) מֵרְבָבָֽה׃ (above a myriad).

11  רֹאשׁ֖וֹ (His head is) כֶּ֣תֶם (gold)— פָּ֑ז (pure gold);

קְוּצּוֹתָיו֙ (his locks are) תַּלְתַּלִּ֔ים (wavy), שְׁחֹר֖וֹת (black) כָּעוֹרֵֽב׃ (like the raven).

12  עֵינָ֕יו (His eyes are) כְּיוֹנִ֖ים (like doves)

עַל־ (beside) אֲפִ֣יקֵי (channels) מָ֑יִם (of waters),

רֹֽחֲצוֹת֙ (washed) בֶּֽחָלָ֔ב (with milk),

יֹשְׁב֖וֹת (sitting) עַל־ (beside) מִלֵּֽאת׃ (a full pool).

13  לְחָיָו֙ (His cheeks are) כַּעֲרוּגַ֣ת (like a bed) הַבֹּ֔שֶׂם (of spice),

מִגְדְּל֖וֹת (towers) מֶרְקָחִ֑ים (of perfume).

שִׂפְתוֹתָיו֙ (His lips) שֽׁוֹשַׁנִּ֔ים (lilies),

נֹטְפ֖וֹת (dripping) מ֥וֹר (with myrrh) עֹבֵֽר׃ (flowing).

14  יָדָיו֙ (His hands are) גְּלִילֵ֣י (rods) זָהָ֔ב (of gold)

מְמֻלָּאִ֖ים (set) בַּתַּרְשִׁ֑ישׁ (with beryl).

מֵעָיו֙ (His belly is) עֶ֣שֶׁת (a plate) שֵׁ֔ן (of ivory),

מְעֻלֶּ֖פֶת (covered) סַפִּירִֽים׃ (with sapphires).

15  שׁוֹקָיו֙ (His legs are) עַמּ֣וּדֵי (pillars) שֵׁ֔שׁ (of marble),

מְיֻסָּדִ֖ים (set) עַל־ (on) אַדְנֵי־ (bases) פָ֑ז (of pure gold);

מַרְאֵ֙הוּ֙ (his appearance is) כַּלְּבָנ֔וֹן (like the Lebanon),

בָּח֖וּר (being excellent) כָּאֲרָזִֽים׃ (like the cedars).

16  חִכּוֹ֙ (His mouth) מַֽמְתַקִּ֔ים (is sweetness),

וְכֻלּ֖וֹ (and all of him) מַחֲמַדִּ֑ים (is desireable).

זֶ֤ה (This is) דוֹדִי֙ (my beloved), וְזֶ֣ה (and this is) רֵעִ֔י (my friend),

בְּנ֖וֹת (O daughters) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (of Jerusalem).
