Berean Study Bible A Greeting from PeterSimon Peter, formerly a fisherman from Galilee, was called by Jesus and became a leading witness of His ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. Jesus gave him the name Cephas, or Peter, meaning “rock,” and entrusted him with significant responsibility among the apostles and the early church. Mrk 3:16 These are the twelve He appointed: Simon… a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, Peter joins humility with apostolic authority. Though appointed as an eyewitness and messenger of Christ, he presents himself first as one belonging wholly to his Lord. Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle,… To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ Salvation rests on the righteous work of Jesus Christ, who is both God and Savior. Believers stand accepted before God through Christ’s righteousness, not their own merit. Tit 2:13 as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance… have received a faith as precious as ours: Peter writes to believers who share the same saving faith possessed by the apostles. Jewish and Gentile Christians alike receive the same salvation and stand equally before God through Jesus Christ. 1Pe 1:7 so that the proven character of your faith… Grace and peace be multiplied to you Peter opens with a blessing for believers to receive an increasing measure of God’s favor and the settled wholeness that comes from reconciliation with Him. Grace is God’s undeserved kindness, by which He saves and sustains His people. Peace includes assurance before God and stability amid suffering, hardship, and opposition. These gifts are not limited to the beginning of faith but continue to deepen throughout the Christian life. 1Pe 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father… through the knowledge of God Growth in grace and peace comes through truly knowing God in a personal, obedient relationship. Peter directs believers away from empty religious profession and toward a knowledge of God that shapes conduct, strengthens faith, and produces spiritual maturity. God has made Himself known through His saving work and His revealed truth. Col 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord… and of Jesus our Lord. Jesus is identified as Lord, possessing divine authority and rightful rule over all who belong to Him. Peter joins knowledge of God with knowledge of Jesus, presenting the Son as inseparable from the Father in the believer’s faith. Confessing Jesus as Lord requires trust in His saving work and submission to His authority. Rom 4:24 but also for us, to whom righteousness will be credited—…
Partakers of the Divine NatureGod supplies the strength and resources that believers cannot produce for themselves. His power is displayed in creation, redemption, Christ’s resurrection, and the continuing work of transforming His people. Eph 1:19-20 and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe.… has given us everything we need God’s provision is complete for the believer’s spiritual calling. Nothing essential for faithful obedience has been withheld. Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up… for life and godliness He provides for life under His care and for conduct that reflects His character. Christian living is not sustained by human effort alone but by what God has supplied. 1Ti 4:8 For physical exercise is of limited value,… through the knowledge of Him This provision is received through a personal and growing knowledge of God in Christ. Knowing Him involves faith, submission, and fellowship with the One who saves. Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You… who called us God took the initiative in bringing His people to Himself. His call gathers believers out of spiritual darkness and into a new life under His authority. 2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling… by His own glory and excellence. God’s majestic holiness and perfect character are the basis of His call. He draws His people by the revelation of who He is and what He has accomplished. 1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood… Through these He has given us His precious and magnificent promises, God’s power and revealed knowledge provide every promise necessary for salvation and godly living. His promises include forgiveness, eternal life, the Holy Spirit’s presence, and the final renewal of His people. They are precious because they come from God and magnificent because they display His glory and faithfulness. 2Co 1:20 For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.… so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, Those united to Christ are transformed by the Holy Spirit to reflect God’s holiness, righteousness, and love. This does not make believers divine, but restores them toward the image of God in which humanity was created. 1Jn 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God… now that you have escaped the corruption in the world Through Christ, believers have been delivered from the spiritual ruin produced by sin and no longer belong to the realm ruled by darkness. This deliverance has begun in the present and will be completed when God renews all things. Gal 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us… caused by evil desires. The world’s corruption arises from sinful human desires that resist God’s rule. Believers are called to reject those desires and live under the Spirit’s power as God continues His work of sanctification. Jas 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires… For this very reason, Peter builds on God’s provision of everything necessary for life and godliness, His promises, and the believer’s escape from the corruption of the world. God’s grace establishes the foundation, and believers are called to respond faithfully to what He has given. 2Co 7:1 Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises,… make every effort Spiritual growth requires deliberate diligence. Salvation is received through faith, yet genuine faith produces a growing life marked by obedience and maturity. Luk 13:24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door.”… to add to your faith virtue; Faith is to be accompanied by moral excellence. Those who trust Christ are called to reflect His character through integrity, courage, and goodness in conduct. Jas 2:18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have deeds.”… and to virtue, knowledge; Moral excellence must be guided by a growing knowledge of God, His truth, and His will. Such knowledge strengthens believers against error and equips them to live wisely in a corrupt world. Php 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound… and to knowledge, self-control; Knowledge of God’s will must shape conduct. Self-control governs desires, appetites, and reactions so that believers do not yield to sin or compromise purity. It reflects the Spirit’s work in a life ordered by obedience to Christ. Php 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound… and to self-control, perseverance; Self-control must endure when obedience becomes costly. Perseverance remains faithful through hardship, opposition, and delay, trusting God’s purposes rather than abandoning faith under pressure. Such endurance produces mature and steady believers. Rom 5:3-4 Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,… and to perseverance, godliness; Perseverance is to lead to a life marked by reverence for God. Godliness joins devotion with practical holiness, directing daily conduct toward what honors Him and reflects the character of Christ. 2Pe 3:11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way,… and to godliness, brotherly kindness; Devotion to God must be joined by sincere care for fellow believers. Those brought into Christ belong to one spiritual family, regardless of background or status, and are to treat one another with the affection, loyalty, and practical concern expected among brothers and sisters. 1Ti 6:11 But you, O man of God, flee from these things… and to brotherly kindness, love. Family affection is to grow into the self-giving love that reflects God’s character. Such love reaches beyond personal preference or close fellowship, seeking the good of others and following the pattern of Christ, who gave Himself for sinners. Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.… For if you possess these qualities Faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love mark the developing character of those who belong to Christ. Col 3:12-14 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved… and continue to grow in them, These virtues are to increase throughout the believer’s life rather than remain undeveloped. Eph 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will… they will keep you from being ineffective A life shaped by these qualities strengthens a believer’s witness and usefulness in Christ’s service 1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.… and unproductive “And unproductive” means failing to bear the spiritual fruit expected of one who abides in Christ. Tit 3:14 And our people must also learn to devote themselves… in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Knowing Christ involves personal trust, obedience, and a growing conformity to His character. Col 2:2-3 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,… But whoever lacks these traits But whoever lacks these traits shows little evidence of the moral and spiritual growth that should follow faith in Christ. Faith is not meant to remain barren but to be accompanied by goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,… is nearsighted to the point of blindness, It describes a believer so absorbed with present concerns that he loses sight of God’s purposes, coming kingdom, and cleansing from past sins. Such spiritual blindness dulls awareness of sin’s seriousness and the call to live according to the truth. Rev 3:17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy… having forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Christ’s sacrificial death has provided real cleansing from the guilt and defilement of former sins. When that redemption is neglected, gratitude fades and the believer may drift into an unfruitful life that contradicts the grace received. Act 22:16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up… Therefore, brothers, Peter draws his instruction from the promises of spiritual growth and fruitful knowledge of Christ. Believers belong to one household through faith and are responsible to encourage one another in steadfast obedience. Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,… strive to make your calling and election sure. God’s saving call and choice are displayed in a believer’s continuing faith, growing character, and obedience. Diligence does not earn salvation but confirms its reality by producing the qualities God supplies. Php 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed… For if you practice these things Faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love are to become the settled pattern of life. These qualities reveal spiritual maturity rather than mere profession. Jhn 13:17 If you know these things, you will be blessed… you will never stumble, Persistent growth in these virtues guards believers from serious spiritual failure and keeps them steady in their walk with Christ. Jud 1:24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling… and you will receive God’s promise is certain for those who persevere in faith and pursue the qualities Peter has described. Their hope rests on God’s faithfulness, not on an uncertain human achievement. Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done… a lavish reception Entrance into God’s kingdom will be marked by honor and joy rather than mere admission. The image suggests the welcome given to victors, honored guests, and those received into a royal celebration. Jhn 14:2-3 In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so,… into the eternal kingdom God’s kingdom will never pass away. Unlike earthly powers, it is permanent, righteous, and fully established at Christ’s return. Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,… of our Lord and Savior Jesus possesses divine authority as Lord and accomplishes redemption as Savior. His rule and His saving work cannot be separated. 2Pe 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior… Jesus Christ. Jesus, whose name means “Yahweh saves,” is the promised Christ, or Messiah—the “Anointed One”—sent to save His people and reign forever. Peter closes by directing believers’ confidence toward the One who secures their place in His kingdom. Act 2:36 Therefore let all Israel know that God has made… Therefore I will always remind you of these things, Peter was committed to repeating the truths that strengthen Christian character and confirm a believer’s calling. The qualities he had listed—faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love—were not optional additions to faith but evidence of a fruitful life in Christ. 2Pe 3:1-2 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.… even though you know them His readers had already received sound instruction and understood the gospel. Yet Peter recognized that believers need regular reminders, especially as false teachers and worldly pressures could weaken their resolve. 1Jn 2:20-21 You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One,… and are established in the truth you now have. They were grounded in the apostolic message concerning Jesus Christ and had a settled faith. Peter wrote to reinforce that foundation and help them remain firm in the truth they had received. Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith… I think it is right Peter sees it as his responsibility to continue strengthening believers through faithful instruction. His apostolic ministry included guarding the church from error and keeping Christ’s teaching before them. Php 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you… to refresh your memory Believers need repeated reminders of truths they have already received so that they remain established in the faith and resist false teaching. 2Pe 3:1 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.… as long as I live Peter intends to carry out this duty throughout the remainder of his earthly life, knowing that his time is limited. Psa 104:33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise… in the tent of my body, Peter describes his body as a temporary dwelling, anticipating the time when he will leave it behind and enter the eternal life promised to believers. 2Co 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in… because I know Peter writes with settled confidence, knowing that his earthly life is nearing its end. 2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,… that this tent His body is pictured as a temporary dwelling, soon to be exchanged for the lasting life God has promised. 2Co 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in… will soon be laid aside, Peter expects his death to come shortly, viewing it as the departure of the believer from the present earthly body. 2Co 5:8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be… as our Lord Jesus Christ Jesus is the sovereign Lord and promised Messiah whom Peter served. Luk 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.… has made clear to me. Jesus had personally foretold Peter’s death and that it would glorify God. Jhn 21:18-19 Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young… And I will make every effort Peter is determined to strengthen the churches by preserving the apostolic teaching he has given them. Heb 4:11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest,… to ensure that after my departure, Knowing that his death—his “departure,” or exodus from this world to the next—is near, he prepares believers to stand firmly without his personal presence. Act 20:29-30 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come… you will be able to recall these things He wants them to retain the truths of Christ’s salvation, the call to holy living, and the certainty of God’s promises. Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send… at all times. These teachings are to remain a lasting foundation for their faith and conduct. Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law…
Eyewitnesses of His MajestyThe apostolic message was not invented mythology or religious speculation. Peter contrasts the gospel with the imaginative stories common in the ancient world and rejects the false teachings already threatening the churches. What the apostles proclaimed rested on God’s revelation and events that occurred in history. 1Ti 4:7 But reject irreverent, silly myths. Instead, train… when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, The apostles declared both Christ’s authority displayed in His works and His promised return in glory. His coming will fulfill the hope proclaimed by Jesus and His disciples and will bring His kingdom openly and decisively. Mat 24:30 At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear… but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. Peter, along with James and John, saw Christ’s glory at the Transfiguration. There Jesus was revealed in divine splendor, and the Father affirmed Him as His beloved Son. That event gave the apostles firsthand confirmation of Christ’s identity and foreshadowed the glory He will display at His return. Luk 9:28-36 About eight days after Jesus had said these things,… For He received honor and glory from God the Father At the Transfiguration, the Father openly affirmed the Son before Peter, James, and John. Jesus received divine honor and glory, revealing His true identity and confirming His authority to accomplish the Father’s saving purpose. Jhn 8:54 If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing.… when the voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory, God spoke from the cloud of His glorious presence, as He had manifested His presence among Israel in the tabernacle and temple. The heavenly voice gave the apostles direct testimony that Jesus was sent and approved by God. Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped… saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Father identified Jesus as His unique and beloved Son and declared His complete pleasure in Him. Jesus perfectly fulfilled the Father’s will, lived without sin, and stood as the promised Messiah and obedient Servant foretold in Scripture. Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved… And we ourselves heard this voice from heaven Peter recalls the Transfiguration, when he, James, and John heard God the Father declare Jesus to be His beloved Son. Their testimony rested on direct experience of Christ’s revealed glory and the Father’s public confirmation of His identity and authority. Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped… when we were with Him on the holy mountain. The mountain was made holy by the presence and glory of God revealed there. During the Transfiguration, Jesus was seen in divine splendor, Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, and the disciples were given a foretaste of His coming kingdom. Mat 17:1-3 After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John… We also have the word of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt. Israel’s prophets spoke by God’s authority of the coming Messiah, His suffering, reign, and salvation. The life, death, resurrection, and glory of Jesus Christ confirmed that their testimony was true. Peter joins the prophetic Scriptures with the apostolic witness, showing that God’s promises were fulfilled in Christ. Luk 24:25-27 Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones,… And you will do well to pay attention to it, Believers are to give careful, continual attention to God’s prophetic word. It provides certain truth in a world marked by spiritual error and prepares God’s people to recognize His purposes in Christ. Heb 2:1 We must pay closer attention, therefore,… as to a lamp shining in a dark place, Scripture gives light amid the darkness of human sin, ignorance, and false teaching. Like a lamp guiding those who travel at night, God’s revelation directs His people until His saving plan is fully revealed. Psa 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. The day points to Christ’s return and the final removal of darkness. The morning star, Christ Himself, will bring complete light, and His appearing will be known by His people not only outwardly but with full inward certainty and joy. Rev 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony… Above all, Peter marks this as essential for understanding the prophetic Scriptures. Jas 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth… you must understand Believers must recognize the source and authority of biblical prophecy. Luk 24:45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. that no prophecy of Scripture Prophetic revelation, whether declaring God’s will, warning of judgment, or revealing future events, belongs to the written Word of God. 2Ti 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction,… comes from one’s own interpretation. No prophet originated God’s message through personal insight, imagination, or private judgment; prophecy came from God and bears His authority. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, Prophecy did not originate in human imagination, ambition, or religious speculation. God revealed His truth through chosen servants, setting genuine prophetic revelation apart from the claims of false prophets who spoke for personal gain or led people away from God. Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen… but men spoke from God The prophets delivered messages entrusted to them by God. Though they spoke in their own historical settings and addressed real nations, kings, and communities, their words carried God’s authority rather than their private opinions. 2Sa 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me;… as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit directed the prophets so that what they proclaimed faithfully communicated God’s will. Their personalities and circumstances were not erased, but the Spirit governed their message, establishing the divine authority and trustworthiness of Scripture. Ezk 8:3 He stretched out what looked like a hand… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
