Prayer for the Son

When Jesus had spoken these things,

Jesus had completed His final instruction to the disciples during the meal before His arrest, preparing them for His departure and the coming work of the Holy Spirit.

Jhn 16:33 I have told you these things so that in Me…
Jhn 14:31 But I do exactly what the Father has commanded Me,…

Jhn 10:29 My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all…

Now this is eternal life,

Eternal life is not merely endless existence after death but the life of God received by those who believe. It begins in the present through reconciliation with God and reaches its fullness in the age to come.

by accomplishing the work

The mission included proclaiming the kingdom, revealing the Father, training the disciples, performing signs, and moving toward His sacrificial death and resurrection. Though the cross was still hours away, its completion was certain within the Father’s plan.

Prayer for the Disciples

I have revealed Your name

Jesus made known the Father’s character, will, and saving purpose through His words and works. As the incarnate Word, He perfectly displayed the Father to those who followed Him.

Psa 22:22 I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;…
Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…
Exo 3:14-15 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are”…

to those You have given Me out of the world.

The disciples were chosen from a sinful world that stands in rebellion against God. Their calling rested on the Father’s purpose and set them apart for service to Christ.

Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
Jhn 6:37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,…
2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers…

They were Yours;

They belonged to the Father before their call to follow Jesus, as God’s covenant people belong to Him by His sovereign claim.

Deu 32:9 But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob…
Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…

You gave them to Me,

The Father entrusted them to the Son, showing the unity of the Father’s purpose and the Son’s authority to lead, preserve, and prepare them for their mission.

Jhn 18:9 This was to fulfill the word He had spoken…
Jhn 10:29 My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all…
Heb 2:13 And again: “I will put My trust in Him.”…

and they have kept Your word.

Though imperfect, they received and obeyed God’s revelation through Jesus, distinguishing them from those who rejected Him.

Rev 3:8 I know your deeds. Behold, I have placed before you…
Jhn 14:23-24 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…

Now they know

The disciples had come to recognize more clearly that Jesus’ words, works, and authority were not independent claims but the revelation of the Father’s will. Their understanding, though not yet complete, prepared them for their coming witness after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension.

Jhn 16:30 Now we understand that You know all things…
Jhn 6:69 We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ…

that everything You have given Me

Jesus possessed all that the Father had entrusted to Him: His message, authority, works, and the people given into His care. His earthly ministry unfolded in complete obedience to the Father’s purpose.

Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…
Jhn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things…
Jhn 3:35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things…

comes from You.

Jesus affirmed that His mission originated with the Father. He had been sent to make the Father known and to accomplish the salvation God had planned.

Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.…
Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…
Jhn 7:29 but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”

For I have given them the words You gave Me,

Jesus faithfully delivered the revelation entrusted to Him by the Father. His teaching carried divine authority because He spoke in perfect unity with the Father’s will and purpose.

Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 14:24 Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words.…
Jhn 8:28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…

and they have received them.

The disciples accepted His words as truth rather than merely hearing them. Their reception marked genuine faith and growing obedience to the One they followed.

1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…
Act 17:11 Now the Bereans were more noble-minded…
Act 2:41 Those who embraced his message were baptized…

They knew with certainty that I came from You,

Through Jesus’ works, teaching, and character, the disciples had come to recognize that His origin was with the Father. Their understanding of His identity had deepened beyond seeing Him only as a teacher or miracle worker.

Jhn 7:29 but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…
Jhn 16:27-30 For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me.…

and they believed that You sent Me.

They trusted that Jesus had been sent by God to accomplish the Father’s saving purpose. Though their understanding was not yet complete, they believed that He was the promised Messiah acting under the Father’s authority.

Jhn 11:42 I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this…
Jhn 6:29 Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe…
1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent…

I ask on their behalf. I do not ask on behalf of the world,

Jesus distinguishes His disciples from the world that rejects God and stands opposed to His rule. His immediate concern is for those who believe in Him and will carry His message after His death, resurrection, and ascension. Their protection and faithfulness are essential to the mission entrusted to them.

Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
Jhn 14:17 The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him…
1Jn 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world…

but on behalf of those You have given Me;

The disciples belong to Jesus because the Father has drawn and entrusted them to the Son. Their calling did not begin with human initiative but with God’s purpose. Their future ministry rests on the Father’s plan and the Son’s care.

Jhn 6:37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,…
Jhn 6:39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me,…
Jhn 10:29 My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all…

for they are Yours.

The disciples remain the Father’s possession even as they belong to the Son. Their security rests in God’s covenant care, not in their own strength. The shared ownership of the Father and Son also displays their unity in carrying out the work of salvation.

Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…
Isa 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says—He who created you……
2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands…

All I have is Yours,

Jesus speaks of the complete unity He shares with the Father. Everything belonging to the Son belongs to the Father, revealing their shared divine nature, authority, and purpose. Throughout His ministry, Jesus carried out the Father’s will and made the Father known.

Jhn 5:19 So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son……
Jhn 8:28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…
Jhn 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will…

and all You have is Mine;

The Son possesses all that belongs to the Father, affirming His full equality with Him. Jesus is not merely the Father’s representative; He shares the Father’s glory, authority, and possession of all things.

Jhn 16:15 Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine.…
Jhn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things…
Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…

and in them I have been glorified.

Jesus is glorified in the disciples who have received His word and believed in Him. Their faith, obedience, and continuing witness would display the truth of His mission before the world.

2Th 1:10 on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints…
Jhn 15:8 This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit…
1Pe 4:11 If anyone speaks, he should speak as one…

I will no longer be in the world,

Jesus speaks of His approaching departure through His death, resurrection, and ascension. His earthly ministry was nearing its completion, though His saving work would continue through His exaltation and the sending of the Holy Spirit.

Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.…
Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up…
Luk 24:51 While He was blessing them, He left them…

but they are in the world,

The disciples would remain among people and powers opposed to Christ. They were to carry His message while facing rejection, pressure, and persecution, requiring the Father’s continuing care.

Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
Php 2:15 you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault…
1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…

and I am coming to You.

Jesus would return to the Father in glory after accomplishing the work entrusted to Him. His return marked not defeat but the completion of His mission and the beginning of the disciples’ Spirit-empowered witness.

Jhn 14:28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back…
Jhn 16:5 Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me;…
Jhn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things…

Holy Father,

Jesus addresses God with both intimacy and reverence. The Father’s holiness sets Him apart from all sin and makes Him the righteous guardian of those who belong to Christ.

Mat 6:9 So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven…
Isa 63:16 Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us…
1Pe 1:15-16 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy…

protect them by Your name,

Jesus asks the Father to preserve the disciples in faith, truth, and obedience. God’s name represents His authority, character, and covenant faithfulness, providing security against spiritual danger.

Psa 109:8 May his days be few; may another take his position.
Psa 69:25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one…

But now I am coming to You;

Jesus speaks on the eve of His arrest, fully aware that His death, resurrection, and ascension will bring Him back to the Father. His return marks the completion of the work He was sent to accomplish: revealing the Father, bearing sin, and securing salvation for those given to Him.

Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.…
Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up…
Heb 9:24 For Christ did not enter a man-made copy…

and I am saying these things while I am in the world,

While still physically present with His disciples, Jesus prays openly for them. They will soon remain in a hostile world, often opposed to God, without His visible presence, yet His words prepare them for what lies ahead and assure them of His continuing care.

Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…

so that they may have My joy fulfilled within them.

Jesus desires His own joy—the joy of perfect fellowship with the Father and confidence in the Father’s completed purpose—to fill His disciples. Their joy rests not on ease or safety, but on belonging to Christ, receiving His word, and sharing in the eternal life He gives.

Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you…
Jhn 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name.…
1Jn 1:4 We write these things so that our joy may be complete.

I have given them Your word

Jesus faithfully delivered the Father’s revelation to the disciples, teaching them God’s truth and preparing them to continue His work after His departure. In receiving His word, they came to know the Father through the Son, whose life and ministry fulfilled God’s promises and revealed His will.

Psa 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your judgments…

and the world has hated them.

Their allegiance to Jesus placed them in conflict with a fallen order that rejects God’s authority. As the disciples proclaimed Christ, opposition arose from religious leaders, civil authorities, and others who resisted the gospel.

1Jn 3:13 So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.
Jhn 15:18-19 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.…
Luk 6:22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude…

For they are not of the world,

Though they remained physically present among the nations, the disciples belonged to God’s kingdom. Their identity, purpose, and hope were no longer governed by the values and ambitions of the world.

Php 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await…
1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…

just as I am not of the world.

Jesus came from the Father and carried out the Father’s will rather than the purposes of the world. His followers share this distinct calling, living among unbelievers while remaining devoted to Christ and His kingdom.

Jhn 8:23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above.…
Jhn 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world”…
Jhn 3:31 The One who comes from above is above all.…

I am not asking that You take them out of the world,

Jesus prays that His disciples will remain in the world after His departure, continuing the work He has given them. Though they do not belong to the world’s fallen system, they are sent into it as His witnesses and will carry the gospel to the nations.

Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
1Co 5:10 I was not including the sexually immoral of this world…
Php 2:15 you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault…

but that You keep them from the evil one.

Jesus asks the Father to guard them from Satan’s attacks, deception, temptation, and opposition. Their safety does not depend on escape from hardship but on the Father’s preserving power as they fulfill their mission.

2Th 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you…
1Jn 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning;…
Eph 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith…

They are not of the world,

Jesus’ disciples belong to God’s kingdom rather than to the fallen order that rejects His rule. Their new identity sets them apart in belief, conduct, and allegiance, even while they remain among unbelievers.

Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…
2Co 6:17 Therefore come out from among them and be separate…

just as I am not of the world.

Jesus is distinct from the world because He came from the Father and perfectly obeyed His will. His followers share this separation through their union with Him, called to live under God’s authority rather than the values and desires of the world.

Jhn 8:23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above.…
Jhn 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world”…
Heb 7:26 Such a high priest truly befits us—One who is holy,…

Sanctify them by the truth;

Jesus asks the Father to sanctify—set apart for a holy purpose—His disciples for the work they will carry into the world after His departure. Their consecration involves more than personal purity; they are devoted to God’s service and equipped to represent Christ faithfully amid opposition.

2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers…
Eph 5:26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing…
1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth…

Your word is truth.

God’s revealed word provides the standard by which they are sanctified. It exposes error, directs obedience, and forms them for their mission. Jesus identifies God’s word as wholly true, consistent with His own identity as the Word made flesh and the perfect revelation of the Father.

Psa 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your judgments…
Psa 33:4 For the word of the LORD is upright, and all His work…
Pro 30:5 Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield…

As You sent Me into the world,

Jesus came from the Father into fallen humanity to accomplish the work of redemption. His earthly ministry fulfilled God’s saving purpose through His teaching, sacrificial death, and resurrection. Though the world stood in rebellion against God, the Son entered it as its Savior.

Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…
1Jn 4:9 This is how God’s love was revealed among us: …
Gal 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,…

I have also sent them into the world.

Jesus entrusted His disciples with the continuation of His mission. They were to testify to Him and proclaim the gospel among all peoples, not withdrawing from the world but serving within it as His representatives. Their work would extend through the Church as the message of salvation went to the nations.

Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”…
Mat 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,…
Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes…

For them I sanctify Myself,

Jesus consecrates Himself to the Father’s will as He approaches the cross. Though already holy and sinless, He sanctifies Himself—sets Himself apart for a holy purpose—as the willing sacrifice for His people, fulfilling His priestly work by offering Himself for their redemption.

Eph 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved…
Heb 13:12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate…
Jhn 10:36 what about the One whom the Father sanctified…

so that they too may be sanctified

His self-offering secures the setting apart of His disciples for God. They belong to Him and are made holy in purpose and service because of His saving work.

1Co 1:2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those called to be holy…
1Th 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify…

by the truth.

Their sanctification rests on the truth revealed by God and embodied in Christ. Through His word and His sacrifice, believers are separated from the world and formed into a people who live under God’s authority.

2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers…
1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth…
Jhn 15:3 You are already clean because of the word…

Prayer for All Believers

I am not asking on behalf of them alone,

Jesus’ prayer includes the disciples gathered with Him at the Last Supper, men who had followed Him throughout His ministry and would soon face His arrest, crucifixion, and departure. As He prepares them for their mission, He intercedes for their protection, faithfulness, and unity.

Rom 8:34 Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died…
Heb 7:25 Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near…
1Jn 2:2 He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,…

but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message,

His concern extends to all who would come to faith through the apostles’ testimony. Their preaching of the Gospel would become the means by which believers from every nation would hear of Christ and trust in Him. Jesus therefore prays not only for the first disciples but for all who would belong to Him through their witness.

Rom 10:17 Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing…
1Co 15:11 Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach,…
2Th 2:14 He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in…

that all of them may be one,

Jesus prays for the unity of all who believe in Him. Their oneness is spiritual, grounded in a common faith, obedience, and love rather than in human institutions or uniformity of background. The early church faced disputes and divisions, yet believers were called to remain one body under Christ.

Eph 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called…
Jhn 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this fold.…
Psa 133:1 A song of ascents. Of David. Behold, how good…

as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You.

The Father and the Son share perfect fellowship, purpose, and glory. Jesus’ relationship with the Father is unique and eternal, revealing the unity of the Godhead. The harmony between Father and Son establishes the pattern for the unity Jesus desires among His people.

May they also be in Us,

Believers are brought into fellowship with God through faith in Christ. This union gives them a new identity and binds them to one another as members of Christ’s body. It is a present spiritual reality that grows as they abide in Him and follow His word.

so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

that they may be perfectly united,

Such unity is spiritual and moral, formed by common faith in Christ, obedience to His word, and love for one another. Though believers differ in background and calling, they belong to one body under one Lord.

1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…
Php 2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded,…
Col 2:2 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,…

so that the world may know that You sent Me
