Lamentations 4
Berean Study Bible

The Distress of Zion

How the gold has become tarnished,

Jerusalem’s former splendor has been ruined. What was precious, glorious, and set apart for God now appears defiled through the city’s judgment and destruction.

Jas 5:2-3 Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.…
Isa 1:22 Your silver has become dross; your fine wine is diluted…

the pure gold has become dull!

The repetition deepens the grief. The people and leaders who once bore the honor of Zion have been brought low, their former dignity obscured by sin, siege, famine, and defeat.

1Ki 6:20-22 The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long…
2Ch 3:5-7 He paneled the main room with cypress…
Mal 3:2-3 But who can endure the day of His coming?…

The gems of the temple lie scattered on every street corner.

The sacred stones, once associated with the beauty and strength of Jerusalem, lie abandoned amid the ruins. After Babylon captured the city and destroyed the temple, what had seemed secure and glorious was scattered before all, revealing the severe consequences of Judah’s unfaithfulness.

Ezk 7:19 They will throw their silver into the streets…
Isa 64:11 Our holy and beautiful temple, where our fathers praised You…
2Ch 36:18-19 who carried off everything to Babylon—all the articles…

How the precious sons of Zion,

Jerusalem’s people, especially its leaders and young men of standing, had been regarded as valuable because Zion was the city God chose for His name and the center of Judah’s worship and government.

Psa 102:13-14 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,…
Isa 43:4 Because you are precious and honored in My sight,…

once worth their weight in pure gold,

Their former honor, security, and prosperity are compared to refined gold. The image recalls the dignity Jerusalem possessed before its rebellion brought the Lord’s judgment.

Pro 8:10-11 Receive my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge…
Pro 3:14-15 for she is more profitable than silver, and her gain…
Psa 19:10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;…

are now esteemed as jars of clay,

After Babylon’s siege and destruction of the city, those once honored were treated as common and fragile. Their suffering, death, captivity, and humiliation revealed how completely Judah’s glory had collapsed.

2Co 4:7 Now we have this treasure in jars of clay…
2Ti 2:20 A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver……
Isa 30:14 It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar…

the work of a potter’s hands!

Clay vessels were ordinary and easily shattered, a stark contrast to gold. The people had not ceased to belong to their Creator, but their sin had brought them from privilege to disgrace under His righteous judgment.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay,…
Jer 18:6 O house of Israel, declares the LORD, can I not treat you……
Rom 9:20-21 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God?…

Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young,

Even creatures associated with desolation and scavenging still care for their offspring. Their natural maternal instinct stands in sharp contrast to the conditions in besieged Jerusalem.

1Th 2:7-8 On the contrary, we were gentle among you…
Isa 66:11-13 so that you may nurse and be satisfied…
Isa 49:15 Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion…

but the daughter of my people has become cruel,

Jerusalem’s inhabitants, weakened by famine and terror during the Babylonian siege, had reached such desperation that parents could no longer provide for their children. The collapse of compassion revealed the terrible effects of judgment upon the city.

Lam 2:20 Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have You ever treated…
Deu 28:53-57 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
Ezk 5:10 As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons…

like an ostrich in the wilderness.

The ostrich was regarded as leaving its young exposed and uncared for in a barren place. Jerusalem had become similarly unable to protect and nourish her children amid devastation and hunger.

Job 39:13-18 The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but cannot match…
Job 30:29 I have become a brother of jackals, a companion…
Mic 1:8 Because of this I will lament and wail; I will walk barefoot…

The nursing infant’s tongue clings in thirst to the roof of his mouth.

During Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem, famine and thirst reached even nursing infants, whose helpless condition revealed the severity of the city’s collapse. Food and water had become scarce, and families could no longer provide for their children.

Isa 41:17 The poor and needy seek water, but there is none;…
Ezk 3:26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth…
Psa 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd…

Little children beg for bread,

Young children, ordinarily dependent on parents and the wider community, wandered in search of basic food. Their hunger exposed the ruin of Jerusalem’s homes, leadership, and public life under judgment.

Psa 37:25 I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen…
Psa 109:10 May his children wander as beggars, seeking sustenance…
Lam 2:12 They cry out to their mothers: “Where is the grain and wine?”…

but no one gives them any.

The suffering was so widespread that no one had enough to share. Jerusalem had become a place of desperate need, where even the most vulnerable received no relief.

Psa 69:20 Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair.…
Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;…
Lam 1:16 For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears.…

Those who once ate delicacies

Jerusalem’s wealthy families, accustomed to abundance and security, were reduced to want during the Babylonian siege. Their former comfort could not preserve them when the city fell under God’s judgment.

Amo 6:4-6 You lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and lounge…

Food became so scarce that those once sheltered in prosperous homes were left hungry and exposed in public places. The reversal of their condition made the city’s ruin visible to all.

The survivors sat among the ruins of the city in grief and humiliation. Ashes marked both the destruction of Jerusalem and the deep mourning of a people brought low by the consequences of their rebellion.

The punishment of the daughter of my people

Judah, pictured as God’s daughter, endured judgment for persistent idolatry, injustice, and rejection of His covenant. The Babylonian siege and destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC brought the warnings of the prophets to fulfillment.

Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…
Amo 3:2 Only you have I known from all the families of the earth;…
Deu 32:35-36 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…

is greater than that of Sodom,

Sodom was destroyed for grievous wickedness, yet Judah bore greater guilt because she had received God’s law, temple, prophets, and repeated calls to repent.

Mat 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable…

which was overthrown in an instant

Sodom’s end came suddenly by divine judgment, while Jerusalem suffered the drawn-out horrors of siege, famine, violence, and exile.

without a hand turned to help her.

No human power could rescue Sodom from God’s judgment. Jerusalem’s failed alliances and unanswered appeals showed the ruin of relying on nations and strength while forsaking the Lord.

Her dignitaries were brighter than snow,

Their former condition was marked by health, abundance, and favor, like the richness associated with the land God had given Israel. Famine and siege had stripped away those visible signs of blessing.

Sng 5:12 His eyes are like doves beside the streams of water,…

their bodies were more ruddy than rubies,

They had once possessed the vigor and beauty of youth, valued and prominent among the people. The comparison underscores how completely suffering had altered them.

Their appearance had been radiant and distinguished, suggesting dignity suited to those entrusted with leadership. Their later disfigurement revealed the devastating cost of Judah’s rebellion and the withdrawal of God’s protecting favor.

Ezk 10:1 And I looked and saw above the expanse, above the heads…
Exo 24:10 and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet…

But now their appearance is blacker than soot;

Famine during Babylon’s siege had ravaged Jerusalem’s people, leaving them darkened, dirty, and visibly weakened. Those once known for health and status bore the outward marks of starvation, grief, and collapse.

Jer 14:2 “Judah mourns and her gates languish. Her people wail…”…
Job 30:30 My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever.
Jol 2:6 Nations writhe in horror before them; every face turns pale.

they are not recognized in the streets.

Their suffering had altered them so severely that neighbors could no longer identify them. The streets of Jerusalem, once filled with ordinary life, became places where the ruined condition of the survivors exposed the city’s shame and devastation.

Their skin has shriveled on their bones;

Starvation and dehydration had reduced them to extreme emaciation. Their bodies testified to the length and severity of the siege, when food became scarce and many perished.

Psa 102:5 Through my loud groaning my skin hangs on my bones.

it has become as dry as a stick.

Their flesh had lost all vitality, becoming dry and lifeless. The image portrays a people brought near death under the judgment that followed Jerusalem’s rebellion against the Lord.

Ezk 37:11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…

During Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem, death in battle was swift compared with the prolonged agony awaiting those trapped within the city walls.

The starving slowly lost strength and health until they could no longer endure. Their condition reflected the devastation of a city cut off from its fields and trade.

Hunger brought continual suffering, described as a wound that would not heal. The people endured physical torment alongside the grief of watching their homes, families, and nation collapse.

Babylon’s blockade prevented Jerusalem from receiving food from the surrounding countryside. The barren fields and empty storehouses testified to the judgment that had come upon the land.

who became their food

The city’s suffering brought the collapse of normal family life and exposed the full weight of God’s judgment upon a people hardened in rebellion.

Mic 3:3 You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off…

in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Jerusalem, dearly regarded as the daughter of God’s people, lay ruined in 586 BC as Babylon destroyed the city and carried many survivors into exile.

Jer 8:21 For the brokenness of the daughter of my people…
Isa 22:4 Therefore I said, “Turn away from me, let me weep bitterly!…
Jer 14:17 My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease…

The LORD has exhausted His wrath;

Jerusalem’s destruction marked the full outworking of God’s judgment after generations of idolatry, injustice, and covenant rebellion. The disaster was not sudden or undeserved; the Lord had repeatedly warned Judah through His prophets.

Ezk 5:13 And when My anger is spent and I have vented My wrath…
Ezk 6:12 He who is far off will die by the plague,…
Jer 7:20 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, My anger…

He has poured out His fierce anger;

In 586 BC, Babylon captured Jerusalem, bringing the judgment God had declared. The city’s fall showed that Judah’s privileged place among the nations did not exempt it from accountability to God.

Jer 44:6 Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned…
Ezk 7:8 Very soon I will pour out My wrath upon you…
Isa 42:25 So He poured out on them His furious anger…

He has kindled a fire in Zion,

Babylonian forces burned Jerusalem, including the temple and royal buildings. Zion, once identified with God’s dwelling among His people, became the scene of judgment because the nation had profaned what was holy.

Lam 2:4 He has bent His bow like an enemy; His right hand…
Psa 74:7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;…
Jer 17:27 But if you do not listen to Me to keep the Sabbath day holy……

and it has consumed her foundations.

The ruin reached beyond the city’s walls and buildings, overturning Judah’s government, worship, security, and national life. The collapse of Jerusalem revealed the consequences of abandoning the Lord, while preserving the hope that He would later restore a repentant remnant.

Lam 2:8 The LORD determined to destroy the wall of the Daughter…

The kings of the earth did not believe,

Jerusalem’s fall astonished surrounding rulers. Its elevated position, strong walls, and history of deliverance had made the city appear secure against conquest. Even foreign nations knew of its God and the remarkable events associated with Israel’s past.

nor any people of the world,

The shock extended beyond kings to the nations generally. Jerusalem was widely regarded as a fortified and significant city, and its destruction revealed the severity of God’s judgment upon His people for their persistent sin.

Jer 19:8 I will make this city a desolation and…
1Ki 9:8 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,…

that an enemy or a foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.

The capture of the gates meant that Jerusalem’s defenses had completely failed. Babylon’s army entered the city despite its fortifications, fulfilling the warnings that judgment would come if Judah continued in rebellion.

Jer 39:2-3 And on the ninth day of the fourth month,…
2Ki 25:4-5 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…

But this was for the sins of her prophets

Jerusalem’s downfall was tied to the unfaithfulness of leaders who claimed to speak for God. Instead of calling the people to repentance and obedience, many prophets affirmed sin and gave false assurances of peace, helping lead the nation into spiritual ruin.

Jer 23:11-12 “For both prophet and priest are ungodly;”…
Ezk 13:1-9 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,…
Mic 3:5-7 This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets,…

and the guilt of her priests,

The priests likewise abandoned their duty to teach God’s law and uphold holiness. Their corruption spread through the life of the city, as those appointed to lead in worship and justice served their own interests rather than the Lord.

Ezk 22:26 Her priests do violence to My law and profane My holy things…
Hos 4:6-9 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…
Mal 2:7-9 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…

who shed the blood of the righteous

These leaders bore guilt for persecuting and killing faithful servants of God who exposed evil and called the nation back to Him. Jerusalem’s history included the rejection of righteous prophets, revealing how deeply its leaders had turned from God’s ways.

Mat 23:35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed…

Act 7:52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute?…

in her midst.

Such injustice occurred openly in her midst, within the community of Jerusalem, the city chosen as the center of worship. Its destruction by Babylon was not arbitrary but God’s judgment on persistent rebellion, corruption, and bloodshed.

Ezk 22:3-4 O city who brings her own doom by shedding blood…
Jer 7:6 if you no longer oppress the foreigner and the fatherless…
Psa 106:38 They shed innocent blood—the blood of their sons…

They wandered blind in the streets,

Jerusalem’s corrupt prophets and priests, who had led the people into sin, were left helpless amid the city’s ruin. Their blindness portrays the judgment that followed their refusal to see and obey God’s truth.

Zep 1:17 I will bring such distress on mankind…
Deu 28:28-29 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness,…
Isa 59:10 Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall…

defiled by this blood,

They bore the guilt of innocent bloodshed, having supported injustice and violence within the city. Their sin had made them unclean before God and brought disgrace upon those entrusted with spiritual leadership.

Isa 59:3 For your hands are stained with blood, and your lips…
Num 35:33-34 Do not pollute the land where you live, …
Psa 106:38 They shed innocent blood—the blood of their sons…

so that no one dared to touch their garments.

Their defilement was so evident that others avoided them, fearing ceremonial uncleanness. Those who should have guided the people toward holiness had become objects of rejection and shame.

Hag 2:13-14 So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact”…
Lev 15:5-8 Anyone who touches his bed must wash his clothes…
Num 19:22 Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean…

“Go away! Unclean!” men shouted at them.

Jerusalem’s survivors were treated like those barred from the community because of defilement. The city’s bloodshed, idolatry, and rejection of God had brought judgment, leaving its people publicly disgraced and cast out.

Lev 13:45-46 A diseased person must wear torn clothes…
Job 30:5-8 They were banished from among men, shouted at like thieves,…
Num 5:2-4 Command the Israelites to send away from the camp…

“Away, away! Do not touch us!”

Fear and revulsion surrounded those fleeing the ruined city. Formerly set apart as God’s people, they had become objects of rejection because sin had corrupted the nation from its leaders to its people.

Isa 52:11 Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing;…
Num 19:22 Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean…
Hag 2:13-14 So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact”…

So they fled and wandered.

After Jerusalem fell to Babylon, many Judeans were scattered, driven from their homes, and left without security or direction. Their exile revealed the consequences of breaking covenant with God.

Gen 4:12-14 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield…
Psa 107:4-7 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path…
Heb 11:37-38 They were stoned, they were sawed in two…

Among the nations it was said, “They can stay here no longer.”

The displaced people found no lasting refuge among surrounding nations. Their loss of home, protection, and acceptance showed the severity of God’s judgment, though His covenant purposes for Israel had not ended.

Lam 1:3 Judah has gone into exile under affliction and harsh slavery…
Deu 28:64-65 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…
Ezk 36:19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered…

The presence of the LORD has scattered them;

Judah’s exile came as God’s judgment for persistent rebellion, idolatry, and injustice. The Lord who had blessed and protected His people now gave them over to the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness, scattering them among the nations.

Psa 68:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. God arises.…
Psa 44:11 You have given us up as sheep to be devoured;…
Ezk 36:19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered…

He regards them no more.

God withdrew His favor and protection from a people who had repeatedly rejected His warnings. Their devastation showed that religious privilege and national identity could not shield them from judgment.

Jer 7:15 And I will cast you out of My presence,…
2Ki 17:18 So the LORD was very angry with Israel…

The priests are shown no honor;

Priests had failed to teach and uphold God’s law, contributing to the nation’s spiritual decline. In the collapse of Jerusalem, their office no longer brought respect or security.

Mal 2:9 “So I in turn have made you despised and humiliated…”…
1Sa 2:30 Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares:…

the elders find no favor.

The elders, responsible for wise and just leadership, were also swept away in the judgment. With priests dishonored and elders rejected, Judah’s religious and civic order lay in ruins.

The people recognized that Jerusalem could no longer resist. Jeremiah’s warnings of judgment were being fulfilled as famine, fear, and military defeat overtook the city.

Jer 18:20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit…
Psa 35:7-8 For without cause they laid their net for me;…

We had said of him, “Under his shadow we will live among the nations.”

Judah had hoped the king would preserve them among the surrounding nations, but Zedekiah’s capture revealed the collapse of that hope and the need for the greater Son of David, the eternal King.

Ezk 31:6 All the birds of the air nested in its branches……
Hos 14:7 They will return and dwell in his shade…
Jdg 9:15 But the thornbush replied, ‘If you really are anointing me…

So rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom,

Edom, descended from Esau, had long opposed Israel and took pleasure in Judah’s destruction. The invitation is ironic: Edom’s celebration over Jerusalem’s fall would soon end under God’s judgment.

Oba 1:12 But you should not gloat in that day, your brother’s day…
Ezk 35:15 As you rejoiced when the inheritance of the house of Israel…
Psa 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom on the day…

you who dwell in the land of Uz.

Edom occupied the region associated with Uz, a land known for its prosperity and ancient reputation. Its location and strength would not shield it from the consequences of its hostility toward Judah.

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job…
Jer 25:20 all the mixed tribes; all the kings of Uz;…
Gen 36:28 These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.

Yet the cup will pass to you as well;

The cup represents the wrath of God poured out against sin. Edom would drink the same judgment it had watched come upon Judah, showing that God holds every nation accountable.

Jer 25:15-17 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:…
Isa 51:17 Awake, awake! Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk…
Psa 75:8 For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, full of foaming wine…

you will get drunk and expose yourself.

Overwhelmed by judgment, Edom would be brought to shame and helplessness. Its pride and confidence would give way to public disgrace as the nation fell.

Hab 2:16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory.…
Gen 9:21-23 But when he drank some of its wine, he became drunk…
Isa 47:3 Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame…

O Daughter of Zion, your punishment is complete;

Zion, Jerusalem and the center of Judah’s national and spiritual life, had endured God’s judgment through the Babylonian destruction and exile. Judah’s idolatry, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness had brought the discipline long warned by the prophets. Yet the judgment had a fixed end; God would preserve His people and restore them to their land.

Isa 40:2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her…
Isa 27:9 Therefore Jacob’s guilt will be atoned for,…
Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are decreed for your people…

He will not prolong your exile.

Babylon’s captivity would last only the appointed period, culminating in the return under Persian rule. The end of exile displayed God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises and prepared the way for the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the temple.

Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years…
Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Isa 52:2 Shake off your dust! Rise up and sit on your throne…

But He will punish your iniquity, O Daughter of Edom;

Edom, descended from Esau, rejoiced over Judah’s fall and took advantage of Jerusalem’s ruin. Their hostility toward their brother nation brought them under God’s judgment. The Lord’s dealings with Edom showed that surrounding nations were also accountable for their actions.

Oba 1:10-15 Because of the violence against your brother Jacob,…
Ezk 25:12-14 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Edom acted…
Amo 1:11-12 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions…

He will expose your sins.

Edom’s violence, pride, and betrayal would be uncovered and judged openly. No nation’s wrongdoing remained hidden from God, and Edom’s apparent security would not protect it from the consequences of its sin.

Ezk 21:24 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 2:22 Although you wash with lye and use an abundance of soap,…
Num 32:23 But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin…
