Psalms 77
Berean Study Bible

In the Day of Trouble I Sought the Lord

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for corporate worship under the direction of the temple’s music leader, showing that Israel’s public praise included honest expressions of distress and faith.

1Ch 15:16 David also told the leaders of the Levites to appoint…
2Ch 29:25 Hezekiah stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD…

According to Jeduthun.

Jeduthun was a Levite musician appointed by David for tabernacle and later temple worship. The heading likely identifies the musical setting or performance tradition associated with his guild.

1Ch 25:1-3 Additionally, David and the commanders of the army…
1Ch 16:41-42 With them were Heman, Jeduthun, and the rest…

A Psalm of Asaph.

Asaph served among David’s leading musicians and was connected with prophetic ministry in Israel’s worship. His descendants continued as temple singers, preserving a tradition of songs that addressed both national history and personal faith.

1Ch 16:4-7 David appointed some of the Levites to minister…
2Ch 29:30 Then King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites…

I cried out to God;

In severe trouble, the psalmist turned directly to God rather than seeking relief elsewhere. His cry reveals both anguish and confidence that God alone could help.

Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…
Exo 2:23-25 After a long time, the king of Egypt died.…

I cried aloud to God to hear me.

The repeated appeal conveys urgent persistence. Though burdened by suffering, Asaph believed the God of Israel heard the prayers of His people.

Psa 61:1-2 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. Of David.…
Psa 130:1-2 A song of ascents. Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD!…

In the day of trouble I sought the Lord;

Affliction drove the psalmist to God rather than away from Him. His distress was severe, yet he knew the Lord alone could give help, understanding, and deliverance.

Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…
Hos 5:15 Then I will return to My place until they admit their guilt…
Jer 29:12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me,…

through the night my outstretched hands did not grow weary;

He continued in earnest prayer through the night, lifting his hands in humble dependence upon God. The prolonged vigil reveals both the weight of his burden and his determination to seek the Lord without ceasing.

Exo 17:11-12 As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed;…
Luk 6:12 In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray…
Psa 63:6-7 When I remember You on my bed, I think of You…

my soul refused to be comforted.

Human consolation could not reach the depth of his grief. His heart remained troubled until he could find assurance in God’s presence, faithfulness, and saving power.

Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…
Jer 31:15 This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah…
Mat 2:18 A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning,…

I remembered You, O God, and I groaned;

In the anguish of the night, the psalmist deliberately calls God to mind, yet the memory intensifies his grief. He knows the Lord’s former faithfulness and power, but his present suffering seems unresolved. His groaning expresses real distress, not unbelief; he brings the weight of his pain before the God he remembers.

Lam 3:19-21 Remember my affliction and wandering, …
Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…
Psa 38:9 O Lord, my every desire is before You; my groaning…

I mused and my spirit grew faint.

Continued meditation on his condition leaves him exhausted and discouraged. The gap between God’s mighty works in the past and the psalmist’s present trouble presses heavily upon him. His strength fails, revealing the limits of human endurance and his need for God’s help.

Psa 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works…
Psa 39:3 My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned.…
Jon 2:7 As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD.…

Selah

The pause allows the sorrow and tension to stand before God. The psalmist does not hide his weakness, but remains turned toward the Lord even when his spirit is overwhelmed.

Psa 4:4 Be angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart…
Psa 3:2 Many say of me, “God will not deliver him.” Selah
Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…

You have kept my eyes from closing;

The psalmist describes a night of anguish in which sleep will not come. He recognizes that God rules even over his distress, yet he cannot understand why the Lord seems distant. His wakefulness leaves him searching his past and considering God’s former acts of mercy.

Psa 119:148 My eyes anticipate the watches of night,…
Job 7:4 When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’…
Pro 6:4 Allow no sleep to your eyes or slumber to your eyelids.

I am too troubled to speak.

Grief has become so heavy that words fail him. His silence is not indifference but a lament offered before God, expressing pain too deep to articulate.

Psa 38:13-14 But like a deaf man, I do not hear; and like a mute man…
Psa 39:2 I was speechless and still; I remained silent…
Job 2:13 Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days…

I considered the days of old,

In distress, the psalmist turns from present sorrow to the record of God’s works for Israel. He recalls the Lord’s deliverance from Egypt, His covenant at Sinai, and His faithful preservation of His people through generations.

Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…
Psa 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works…
Psa 44:1 For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.…

the years long in the past.

Israel’s history testified that God had not forgotten His covenant or abandoned His purposes. What He had done for the patriarchs, Moses, and David gave assurance that His character and promises remained unchanged.

Mal 3:4 Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem…
Isa 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD.…
Isa 46:9 Remember what happened long ago, for I am God,…

At night I remembered my song;

In the darkness of distress, the psalmist recalled former songs of worship and the joy he had known in God’s presence. Memory of past faithfulness sharpened his awareness of present sorrow but also kept hope alive.

Psa 42:8 The LORD decrees His loving devotion by day,…
Job 35:10 But no one asks, ‘Where is God my Maker,…
Psa 63:6 When I remember You on my bed, I think of You…

in my heart I mused,

He turned inward, examining his grief in his heart, the center of his thoughts and emotions, and considering whether God had withdrawn His favor. His meditation was not idle reflection but an earnest search for understanding before the Lord.

Psa 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart…
Psa 49:3 My mouth will impart wisdom, and the meditation of my heart…
Psa 4:4 Be angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart…

and my spirit pondered:

With his whole inner being, he wrestled with questions about God’s promises and His apparent silence. The struggle prepared him to remember that God’s character and works had not changed.

Pro 20:27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD,…
Isa 26:9 My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit…
1Co 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of man……

“Will the Lord spurn us forever

Asaph speaks from a season of severe distress, fearing that God’s discipline or silence has become permanent. Israel’s history included such dark periods, yet the Lord remained faithful to His covenant even when His people experienced judgment.

Psa 44:23 Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise!……
Psa 74:1 A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, O God?…
Lam 5:22 unless You have utterly rejected us and remain angry with us…

and never show His favor again?

God’s favor brought His people protection, provision, and the assurance of His presence. The question expresses the anguish of one who cannot presently see that favor, while the psalm will turn to remembering God’s past mighty works and enduring mercy.

Psa 85:6-7 Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice…
Psa 85:4 Restore us, O God of our salvation, and put away…
Psa 80:3 Restore us, O God, and cause Your face to shine upon us,…

Is His loving devotion gone forever?

In the anguish of his crisis, Asaph wonders whether God’s covenant love has withdrawn permanently. The question rises from real suffering, not from a denial of God’s character. Israel’s history testified that the Lord had repeatedly shown mercy to His people, even when their circumstances seemed to contradict His care.

Psa 89:1-2 A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the LORD…
Isa 54:10 Though the mountains may be removed and the hills…
Lam 3:22-23 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD…

Has His promise failed for all time?

Asaph asks whether God’s pledged faithfulness has come to an end. His distress makes the promises of deliverance and preservation appear distant, yet the psalm moves toward remembrance of God’s past works. The apparent delay does not mean that God has abandoned His word.

1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…

Has God forgotten to be gracious?

In his anguish, Asaph wrestles with the apparent absence of the grace God had repeatedly shown Israel. The question contrasts his present suffering with the Lord’s revealed character as compassionate, faithful, and merciful. It records real distress without denying the truth of who God is.

Psa 103:8-10 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger…
Isa 49:15-16 Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion…
Lam 3:22-23 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD…

Has His anger shut off His compassion?”

God’s anger against sin is righteous, yet it does not cancel His covenant mercy. Israel’s history showed both divine discipline and restoration. Asaph fears that judgment has become permanent, but the psalm turns toward remembrance of God’s mighty acts and enduring faithfulness.

Isa 54:7-8 For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion…
Mic 7:18-19 Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity…
Lam 3:31-33 For the Lord will not cast us off forever.…

Selah

Selah, likely a pause for reflection, calls attention to the weight of these questions before the psalmist moves from despair toward confidence in God’s past deeds.

Psa 4:4 Be angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart…
Psa 3:2 Many say of me, “God will not deliver him.” Selah
Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…

So I said,

The psalmist records his conclusion in the midst of deep distress, bringing his troubled thoughts before God.

Lam 3:18 “My strength has perished, along with my hope…”…
Psa 31:22 “In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from Your sight!””…
Psa 116:11 In my alarm I said, “All men are liars!”

“I am grieved

His sorrow arose from the apparent silence of God while His people suffered.

Psa 73:21 When my heart was grieved and I was pierced within,
Psa 13:2 How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart…
Psa 38:6 I am bent and brought low; all day long I go about mourning.

that the right hand of the Most High

God’s right hand represents His sovereign power to deliver, preserve, and judge. The Most High rules over every nation and circumstance.

Psa 118:15-16 Shouts of joy and salvation resound in the tents…
Psa 20:6 Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed;…
Psa 98:1 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders…

has changed.”

God’s former acts of help seemed absent from the psalmist’s present situation. His complaint reflects his anguish, not an actual change in God’s character or power.

Psa 89:49 Where, O Lord, is Your loving devotion of old…
Psa 44:9 But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth…
Psa 60:1 You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us;…

I will remember the works of the LORD;

Recalling God’s acts in creation, Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, and His provision in the wilderness anchors faith in His power and covenant faithfulness. Israel’s history testified that the Lord had acted decisively for His people and remained worthy of trust amid present distress.

Psa 105:5 Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels,…
1Ch 16:12 Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels,…
Psa 111:4 He has caused His wonders to be remembered;…

yes, I will remember Your wonders of old.

The psalmist deliberately turns to the mighty works God performed in earlier generations, including the Red Sea crossing and His care for Israel in the desert. Those wonders revealed God’s rule over creation, His judgment against evil, and His commitment to preserve His people.

Deu 7:18-19 But do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember…
Isa 46:9 Remember what happened long ago, for I am God,…
Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…

I will reflect on all You have done

Asaph turns from present distress to God’s recorded acts of deliverance, especially His redemption of Israel from Egypt and His preservation of the nation in the wilderness. Remembering God’s work anchors faith in His unchanging character and faithfulness.

Psa 143:5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works…
Psa 145:5 The glorious splendor of Your majesty. And I will…
Psa 105:5 Remember the wonders He has done, His marvels,…

and ponder Your mighty deeds.

God’s mighty deeds include His rule over creation, His judgments on Israel’s enemies, and His saving intervention for His people. These works reveal His power and sovereignty, ultimately pointing to His greatest act of salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Psa 145:4 One generation will commend Your works to the next,…
Psa 106:2 Who can describe the mighty acts of the LORD…
Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…

Your way, O God, is holy.

God’s dealings are pure, righteous, and wholly distinct from human sin and weakness. In the psalmist’s distress, he remembers God’s faithful acts in Israel’s history, especially His deliverance of His people. God’s holiness governed His covenant, worship, judgments, and mercy, while the tabernacle revealed that sinful people could not approach Him apart from His appointed means of atonement.

2Sa 22:31 As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD…
Isa 35:8 And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness.…
Psa 99:9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His holy mountain,…

What god is so great as our God?

Israel’s God stands above every false god worshiped by the surrounding nations. He alone created all things, rules history, saves His people, and displays power beyond human control. The God who redeemed Israel is without rival, and His greatness is fully revealed in Jesus Christ.

Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…
Psa 86:8 O Lord, there is none like You among the gods,…
1Ki 8:23 O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven…

You are the God who works wonders;

God’s mighty acts reveal His sovereign rule over creation and history. He created the world, judged Egypt through plagues, divided the Red Sea, sustained Israel in the wilderness, and gave His people victory over enemies beyond their strength. These wonders were real interventions that displayed His faithfulness to His covenant and pointed forward to the greater deliverance accomplished through Christ.

Psa 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, …
Psa 136:4 He alone does great wonders. His loving devotion…
Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…

You display Your strength among the peoples.

God did not act privately or only for Israel’s benefit. His judgments on Egypt, the fall of Jericho, and the victories He gave Israel made His power known among surrounding nations. His works showed that no king, army, or false god could stand against Him. Through the gospel, the knowledge of His saving power now reaches every people and nation.

Psa 96:3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders…
Psa 66:3 Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds!…
Exo 9:16 But I have raised you up for this very purpose…

With power You redeemed Your people,

God delivered Israel from Egyptian slavery by His mighty hand, proving His faithfulness to the covenant promises made to the patriarchs. The Exodus established Israel as His people and displayed His power over every force that opposed them.

Exo 15:13 With loving devotion You will lead the people…
Deu 7:8 But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath…
Psa 106:10 He saved them from the hand that hated them;…

the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

Jacob, renamed Israel, was the father of the twelve tribes. Joseph preserved Jacob’s family during the famine in Egypt, and his sons Ephraim and Manasseh received tribal inheritance through Jacob. Their names recall God’s care for Israel from the patriarchal period through the nation’s redemption.

Gen 46:26-27 All those belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt…
Exo 1:1-5 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went…
Psa 80:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lilies…

Psa 46:11 The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob…

The waters saw You, O God;

Creation responds to its Creator. The sea, often associated with danger and untamed power, could not resist God’s presence. At the Red Sea, He divided the waters and brought Israel safely through while overthrowing Pharaoh’s army.

Psa 46:3 though their waters roar and foam and the mountains quake…
Psa 93:3-4 The floodwaters have risen, O LORD; the rivers…

even the depths were shaken.

The deepest parts of the sea, hidden and feared by men, were disturbed before Him. Nothing in creation is beyond His authority, whether on the earth, in the sea, or in the unseen depths.

Exo 15:8 At the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up;…
Psa 18:15 The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations…
Hab 3:10 The mountains saw You and quaked; torrents of water swept…

The clouds poured down water;

The heavens opened in a violent storm, displaying the Lord’s rule over the forces of creation. Rain, essential for life in Israel’s land, remained under His command and could bring either provision or judgment.

Psa 18:11 He made darkness His hiding place, and storm clouds a canopy…
2Sa 22:12 He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water…
Psa 68:8 the earth shook and the heavens poured down rain…

the skies resounded with thunder;

Thunder marked the terrifying majesty of God as He acted for His people. The sound from heaven portrayed His presence as neither distant nor powerless during Israel’s crisis.

Exo 19:16 On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder…
Psa 18:13 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High…
1Sa 7:10 As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel,…

2Sa 22:15 He shot His arrows and scattered the foes;…
Hab 3:11 Sun and moon stood still in their places…

Your thunder resounded in the whirlwind;

the earth trembled and quaked.

The shaking of the earth reflects the response of creation to its Creator. As God led His people through the sea, the forces of nature bore witness to His authority and His purpose to save Israel.

Exo 19:18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke,…
Jdg 5:4-5 O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched…
Psa 114:7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord…

Your path led through the sea,

God carried out His leadership through Moses and Aaron, whom He appointed to lead the nation. Moses served as Israel’s prophet and lawgiver, while Aaron ministered as high priest.
