Isaiah 14

Restoration for Israel

1  כִּי֩ (For) יְרַחֵ֨ם (will have compassion) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶֽת־ (on) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (Jacob), וּבָחַ֥ר (and He will choose) עוֹד֙ (again) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וְהִנִּיחָ֖ם (and He will settle them) עַל־ (in) אַדְמָתָ֑ם (their own land), וְנִלְוָ֤ה (and will join) הַגֵּר֙ (the sojourner) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (with them), וְנִסְפְּח֖וּ (and attach themselves) עַל־ (to) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (of Jacob). 2  וּלְקָח֣וּם (And will take them) עַמִּים֮ (the peoples) וֶהֱבִיא֣וּם (and bring them) אֶל־ (to) מְקוֹמָם֒ (their place), וְהִֽתְנַחֲל֣וּם (and will possess them) בֵּֽית־ (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) עַ֚ל (in) אַדְמַ֣ת (the land) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) לַעֲבָדִ֖ים (as menservants) וְלִשְׁפָח֑וֹת (and as maidservants), וְהָיוּ֙ (and they will become) שֹׁבִ֣ים (captives) לְשֹֽׁבֵיהֶ֔ם (to their captors) וְרָד֖וּ (and they will rule) בְּנֹגְשֵׂיהֶֽם׃ס (over their oppressors).

The Fall of the King of Babylon

3  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it will come to pass) בְּי֨וֹם (in the day) הָנִ֤יחַ (of giving rest) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְךָ֔ (to you) מֵֽעָצְבְּךָ֖ (from your pain) וּמֵרָגְזֶ֑ךָ (your trouble), וּמִן־ (and from) הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה (the servitude) הַקָּשָׁ֖ה (hard) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עֻבַּד־ (has been served) בָּֽךְ׃ (upon you). 4  וְנָשָׂ֜אתָ (That you will take up) הַמָּשָׁ֥ל (the proverb) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) עַל־ (against) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) וְאָמָ֑רְתָּ (and you will say),

אֵ֚יךְ (How) שָׁבַ֣ת (has ceased) נֹגֵ֔שׂ (the oppressor)!

שָׁבְתָ֖ה (Has ceased) מַדְהֵבָֽה׃ (the golden city)!

5  שָׁבַ֥ר (Has broken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מַטֵּ֣ה (the staff) רְשָׁעִ֑ים (of the wicked),

שֵׁ֖בֶט (the scepter) מֹשְׁלִֽים׃ (of the rulers)—

6  מַכֶּ֤ה (the one striking) עַמִּים֙ (the peoples) בְּעֶבְרָ֔ה (in wrath)

מַכַּ֖ת (a striking) בִּלְתִּ֣י (with no) סָרָ֑ה (turning aside),

רֹדֶ֤ה (one ruling) בָאַף֙ (in anger) גּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations),

מֻרְדָּ֖ף (pursuing) בְּלִ֥י (without) חָשָֽׂךְ׃ (restraint).

7  נָ֥חָה (Is at rest) שָׁקְטָ֖ה (and quiet) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth);

פָּצְח֖וּ (they burst forth) רִנָּֽה׃ (with singing).

8  גַּם־ (Even), בְּרוֹשִׁ֛ים (the cypress trees) שָׂמְח֥וּ (rejoice) לְךָ֖ (over you),

אַרְזֵ֣י (the cedars) לְבָנ֑וֹן (of Lebanon):

מֵאָ֣ז (Since) שָׁכַ֔בְתָּ (you have been laid low),

לֹֽא־ (not) יַעֲלֶ֥ה (has come up) הַכֹּרֵ֖ת (the cutter) עָלֵֽינוּ׃ (against us).

9  שְׁא֗וֹל (Sheol) מִתַּ֛חַת (from beneath) רָגְזָ֥ה (stirs itself) לְךָ֖ (for you)

לִקְרַ֣את (to meet you) בּוֹאֶ֑ךָ (at your coming);

עוֹרֵ֨ר (it rouses) לְךָ֤ (for you) רְפָאִים֙ (the Rephaim),

כָּל־ (all) עַתּ֣וּדֵי (the chief ones) אָ֔רֶץ (of the earth).

הֵקִים֙ (It raises up) מִכִּסְאוֹתָ֔ם (from their thrones)

כֹּ֖ל (all) מַלְכֵ֥י (the kings) גוֹיִֽם׃ (of the nations).

10  כֻּלָּ֣ם (All of them) יַֽעֲנ֔וּ (will answer) וְיֹאמְר֖וּ (and will say) אֵלֶ֑יךָ (to you),

גַּם־ (Even) אַתָּ֛ה (you) חֻלֵּ֥יתָ (have become weak), כָמ֖וֹנוּ (like us)

אֵלֵ֥ינוּ (like us) נִמְשָֽׁלְתָּ׃ (have you become).

11  הוּרַ֥ד (Has been brought down) שְׁא֛וֹל (to Sheol) גְּאוֹנֶ֖ךָ (your pride),

הֶמְיַ֣ת (the sound) נְבָלֶ֑יךָ (of your harps);

תַּחְתֶּ֙יךָ֙ (under you) יֻצַּ֣ע (is spread out) רִמָּ֔ה (the maggot),

וּמְכַסֶּ֖יךָ (and your covering) תּוֹלֵעָֽה׃ (is the worm).

12  אֵ֛יךְ (How) נָפַ֥לְתָּ (you have fallen) מִשָּׁמַ֖יִם (from the heavens),

הֵילֵ֣ל (O shining one), בֶּן־ (son) שָׁ֑חַר (of the dawn)!

נִגְדַּ֣עְתָּ (You have been cut down) לָאָ֔רֶץ (to the ground),

חוֹלֵ֖שׁ (O weakener) עַל־ (of) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (nations)!

13  וְאַתָּ֞ה (And for you) אָמַ֤רְתָּ (have said) בִֽלְבָבְךָ֙ (in your heart),

הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם (To the heavens) אֶֽעֱלֶ֔ה (I will ascend),

מִמַּ֥עַל (above) לְכֽוֹכְבֵי־ (the stars) אֵ֖ל (of God),

אָרִ֣ים (I will raise) כִּסְאִ֑י (my throne).

וְאֵשֵׁ֥ב (And I will sit) בְּהַר־ (on the mountain) מוֹעֵ֖ד (of meeting),

בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֥י (in the far reaches) צָפֽוֹן׃ (of the north).

14  אֶעֱלֶ֖ה (I will ascend) עַל־ (above) בָּ֣מֳתֵי (the heights) עָ֑ב (of the clouds);

אֶדַּמֶּ֖ה (I will be like) לְעֶלְיֽוֹן׃ (to the Most High).

15  אַ֧ךְ (Yet) אֶל־ (to) שְׁא֛וֹל (Sheol) תּוּרָ֖ד (you will be brought down),

אֶל־ (to) יַרְכְּתֵי־ (the sides) בֽוֹר׃ (of the Pit).

16  רֹאֶ֙יךָ֙ (Those who see you) אֵלֶ֣יךָ (at you) יַשְׁגִּ֔יחוּ (will gaze)

אֵלֶ֖יךָ (at you) יִתְבּוֹנָ֑נוּ (they will ponder):

הֲזֶ֤ה (Is this) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man) מַרְגִּ֣יז (who made tremble) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth),

מַרְעִ֖ישׁ (the one shaking) מַמְלָכֽוֹת׃ (kingdoms),

17  שָׂ֥ם (setting) תֵּבֵ֛ל (the world) כַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר (as a wilderness),

וְעָרָ֣יו (its cities) הָרָ֑ס (he has broken down)?

אֲסִירָ֖יו (His captives) לֹא־ (not) פָ֥תַח (he has released)

בָּֽיְתָה׃ (to their house).

18  כָּל־ (All) מַלְכֵ֥י (the kings) גוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations)— כֻּלָּ֑ם (all of them) שָׁכְב֥וּ (lie down) בְכָב֖וֹד (in glory),

אִ֥ישׁ (each man) בְּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ (in his own house).

19  וְאַתָּ֞ה (And you) הָשְׁלַ֤כְתָּ (are cast out) מִֽקִּבְרְךָ֙ (from your grave) כְּנֵ֣צֶר (like a branch) נִתְעָ֔ב (detested),

לְב֥וּשׁ (the garment) הֲרֻגִ֖ים (of those who are slain) מְטֹ֣עֲנֵי (pierced) חָ֑רֶב (by the sword),

יוֹרְדֵ֥י (going down) אֶל־ (to) אַבְנֵי־ (the stones) ב֖וֹר (of the pit),

כְּפֶ֥גֶר (like a corpse) מוּבָֽס׃ (trampled).

20  לֹֽא־ (Not) תֵחַ֤ד (will you be joined) אִתָּם֙ (with them) בִּקְבוּרָ֔ה (in the grave),

כִּֽי־ (because) אַרְצְךָ֥ (your land) שִׁחַ֖תָּ (you have destroyed);

עַמְּךָ֣ (your people). הָרָ֑גְתָּ (You have killed)

לֹֽא־ (not) יִקָּרֵ֥א (let be mentioned)

לְעוֹלָ֖ם (forever) זֶ֥רַע (the seed) מְרֵעִֽים׃ (of evildoers).

21  הָכִ֧ינוּ (Prepare) לְבָנָ֛יו (for his sons) מַטְבֵּ֖חַ (slaughter),

בַּעֲוֺ֣ן (for the iniquity) אֲבוֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers),

בַּל־ (lest) יָקֻ֙מוּ֙ (them rise up) וְיָ֣רְשׁוּ (and possess) אָ֔רֶץ (the land),

וּמָלְא֥וּ (and fill) פְנֵֽי־ (the face) תֵבֵ֖ל (of the world) עָרִֽים׃ (with cities).

22  וְקַמְתִּ֣י (And I will rise up) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (against them),

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts),

וְהִכְרַתִּ֨י (And I will cut off) לְבָבֶ֜ל (from Babylon)

שֵׁ֥ם (the name), וּשְׁאָ֛ר (and remnant),

וְנִ֥ין (and offspring), וָנֶ֖כֶד (and posterity),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

23  וְשַׂמְתִּ֛יהָ (Into a possession) לְמוֹרַ֥שׁ (into a possession) קִפֹּ֖ד (for the owl),

וְאַגְמֵי־ (and ponds) מָ֑יִם (of waters),

וְטֵֽאטֵאתִ֙יהָ֙ (and I will sweep it)

בְּמַטְאֲטֵ֣א (with the broom) הַשְׁמֵ֔ד (of destruction),

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ (Hosts).

God’s Purpose against Assyria

24  נִשְׁבַּ֛ע (Has sworn) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

אִם־ (If) לֹ֞א (not) כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (as) דִּמִּ֙יתִי֙ (I have purposed), כֵּ֣ן (so) הָיָ֔תָה (it will be),

וְכַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and as) יָעַ֖צְתִּי (I have counseled), הִ֥יא (so it) תָקֽוּם׃ (will stand),

25  לִשְׁבֹּ֤ר (To break) אַשּׁוּר֙ (Assyria) בְּאַרְצִ֔י (in My land),

וְעַל־ (and on) הָרַ֖י (My mountains) אֲבוּסֶ֑נּוּ (I will trample him).

וְסָ֤ר (And will be turned aside) מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶם֙ (from them) עֻלּ֔וֹ (his yoke)

וְסֻ֨בֳּל֔וֹ (and his burden) מֵעַ֥ל (from) שִׁכְמ֖וֹ (their shoulders) יָסֽוּר׃ (will be turned aside).

26  זֹ֛את (This) הָעֵצָ֥ה (is the counsel) הַיְּעוּצָ֖ה (that is counseled) עַל־ (for) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth),

וְזֹ֛את (and this is) הַיָּ֥ד (the hand) הַנְּטוּיָ֖ה (that is stretched out) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).

27  כִּֽי־ (For) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֛וֹת (Hosts) יָעָ֖ץ (has counseled),

וּמִ֣י (and who) יָפֵ֑ר (can break it).

וְיָד֥וֹ (And His hand) הַנְּטוּיָ֖ה (is stretched out),

וּֽמִ֥י (and who) יְשִׁיבֶֽנָּה׃פ (can turn it back)?

Philistia Will Be Destroyed

28  בִּשְׁנַת־ (In the year) מ֖וֹת (of the death) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (of King) אָחָ֑ז (Ahaz) הָיָ֖ה (came) הַמַּשָּׂ֥א (burden) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this):

29  אַֽל־ (Not) תִּשְׂמְחִ֤י (do rejoice) פְלֶ֙שֶׁת֙ (Philistia), כֻּלֵּ֔ךְ (all of you),

כִּ֥י (that) נִשְׁבַּ֖ר (is broken) שֵׁ֣בֶט (the rod) מַכֵּ֑ךְ (that struck you).

כִּֽי־ (For) מִשֹּׁ֤רֶשׁ (from the root) נָחָשׁ֙ (of the snake) יֵ֣צֵא (will come forth) צֶ֔פַע (a viper),

וּפִרְי֖וֹ (and its fruit is) שָׂרָ֥ף (a fiery serpent) מְעוֹפֵֽף׃ (flying).

30  וְרָעוּ֙ (Will find pasture) בְּכוֹרֵ֣י (the firstborn) דַלִּ֔ים (of the poor),

וְאֶבְיוֹנִ֖ים (and the needy) לָבֶ֣טַח (in safety) יִרְבָּ֑צוּ (will stretch out),

וְהֵמַתִּ֤י (and I will kill) בָֽרָעָב֙ (with famine) שָׁרְשֵׁ֔ךְ (your root),

וּשְׁאֵרִיתֵ֖ךְ (and your remnant) יַהֲרֹֽג׃ (it will slay).

31  הֵילִ֤ילִֽי (Wail), שַׁ֙עַר֙ (O gate)! זַֽעֲקִי־ (Cry out), עִ֔יר (O city)!

נָמ֖וֹג (Melt away), פְּלֶ֣שֶׁת (Philistia), כֻּלֵּ֑ךְ (all of you),

כִּ֤י (for) מִצָּפוֹן֙ (from the north) עָשָׁ֣ן (smoke) בָּ֔א (will come),

וְאֵ֥ין (and none) בּוֹדֵ֖ד (is alone) בְּמוֹעָדָֽיו׃ (in its ranks).

32  וּמַֽה־ (And what) יַּעֲנֶ֖ה (will he answer)

מַלְאֲכֵי־ (to the messengers) ג֑וֹי (of the nation)?

כִּ֤י (That) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) יִסַּ֣ד (has founded) צִיּ֔וֹן (Zion),

וּבָ֥הּ (and in it) יֶחֱס֖וּ (will take refuge) עֲנִיֵּ֥י (the poor) עַמּֽוֹ׃ס (of His people).
