Midian Oppresses Israel

1  וַיַּעֲשׂ֧וּ (And did) בְנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); וַיִּתְּנֵ֧ם (and delivered them) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) מִדְיָ֖ן (of Midian) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 2  וַתָּ֥עָז (And prevailed) יַד־ (the hand) מִדְיָ֖ן (of Midian) עַל־ (against) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). מִפְּנֵ֨י (From the faces) מִדְיָ֜ן (of the Midianite), עָשֽׂוּ (made) לָהֶ֣ם׀ (for themselves) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּנְהָרוֹת֙ (the dens) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that are) בֶּֽהָרִ֔ים (in the mountains), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמְּעָר֖וֹת (the caves), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמְּצָדֽוֹת׃ (the strongholds).

3  וְהָיָ֖ה (And it came to pass), אִם־ (when) זָרַ֣ע (had sown) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וְעָלָ֨ה (that came up) מִדְיָ֧ן (Midian) וַֽעֲמָלֵ֛ק (and Amalek) וּבְנֵי־ (and the sons) קֶ֖דֶם (of the East), וְעָל֥וּ (and they came up) עָלָֽיו׃ (against him). 4  וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ (And they would encamp) עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (against them) וַיַּשְׁחִ֙יתוּ֙ (and destroy) אֶת־ (-) יְב֣וּל (the produce) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the earth), עַד־ (as far as) בּוֹאֲךָ֖ (-) עַזָּ֑ה (Gaza), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ (leave) מִֽחְיָה֙ (sustenance) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (for Israel), וְשֶׂ֥ה (and either sheep), וָשׁ֖וֹר (or ox), וַחֲמֽוֹר׃ (or donkey). 5  כִּ֡י (For) הֵם֩ (they) וּמִקְנֵיהֶ֨ם (and their livestock) יַעֲל֜וּ (would come up), וְאָהֳלֵיהֶ֗ם (and their tents) יָבֹאוּ (and they would come) כְדֵֽי־ (as the fullness) אַרְבֶּה֙ (of the locust) לָרֹ֔ב (for multitude). וְלָהֶ֥ם (And of them) וְלִגְמַלֵּיהֶ֖ם (and their camels) אֵ֣ין (was no) מִסְפָּ֑ר (number), וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ (and they would enter) בָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃ (to destroy it).

6  וַיִּדַּ֧ל (And was impoverished) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) מְאֹ֖ד (greatly) מִפְּנֵ֣י (because) מִדְיָ֑ן (of the Midianite), וַיִּזְעֲק֥וּ (and cried out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).

7  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) זָעֲק֥וּ (cried out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) עַ֖ל (on) אֹד֥וֹת (account) מִדְיָֽן׃ (of the Midianite), 8  וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח (that sent) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אִ֥ישׁ (-) נָבִ֖יא (a prophet) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and who said) לָהֶ֜ם (to them), כֹּה־ (Thus) אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel): אָנֹכִ֞י (I) הֶעֱלֵ֤יתִי (brought up) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (from Egypt) וָאֹצִ֥יא (and brought) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) מִבֵּ֥ית (out of the house) עֲבָדִֽים׃ (of slavery). 9  וָאַצִּ֤ל (And I delivered) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִיַּ֣ד (out of the hand) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt) וּמִיַּ֖ד (and out of the hand) כָּל־ (of all) לֹחֲצֵיכֶ֑ם (who oppressed you⁺), וָאֲגָרֵ֤שׁ (and I drove out) אוֹתָם֙ (them) מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם (before your⁺ faces), וָאֶתְּנָ֥ה (and I gave) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָֽם׃ (their land). 10  וָאֹמְרָ֣ה (And I said) לָכֶ֗ם (to you⁺), אֲנִי֙ (I am) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God). לֹ֤א (Not) תִֽירְאוּ֙ (do fear) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) הָאֱמֹרִ֔י (of the Amorite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (in whose) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) יוֹשְׁבִ֣ים (dwell) בְּאַרְצָ֑ם (land). וְלֹ֥א (And not) שְׁמַעְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ have listened to) בְּקוֹלִֽי׃פ (My voice).

The Call of Gideon

11  וַיָּבֹ֞א (And came) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH), וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (and sat) תַּ֤חַת (under) הָֽאֵלָה֙ (the oak) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בְּעָפְרָ֔ה (in Ophrah), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) לְיוֹאָ֖שׁ (unto Joash) אֲבִ֣י (the Abi-) הָֽעֶזְרִ֑י (ezrite), וְגִדְע֣וֹן (and Gideon) בְּנ֗וֹ (his son) חֹבֵ֤ט (threshed) חִטִּים֙ (wheat) בַּגַּ֔ת (in the winepress) לְהָנִ֖יס (to hide it) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from the face) מִדְיָֽן׃ (of the Midianite). 12  וַיֵּרָ֥א (And appeared) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) מַלְּאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH is) עִמְּךָ֖ (with you), גִּבּ֥וֹר (O mighty man) הֶחָֽיִל׃ (of valor).

13  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלָ֤יו (to Him) גִּדְעוֹן֙ (Gideon), בִּ֣י (Please), אֲדֹנִ֔י (my Lord), וְיֵ֤שׁ (and if is) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִמָּ֔נוּ (with us) וְלָ֥מָּה (and why) מְצָאַ֖תְנוּ (has happened to us) כָּל־ (all) זֹ֑את (this)? וְאַיֵּ֣ה (And where are) כָֽל־ (all) נִפְלְאֹתָ֡יו (His miracles) אֲשֶׁר֩ (about which) סִפְּרוּ־ (told) לָ֨נוּ (us) אֲבוֹתֵ֜ינוּ (our fathers) לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), הֲלֹ֤א (Did not) מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ (from Egypt) הֶעֱלָ֣נוּ (bring us up) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)? וְעַתָּה֙ (And) נְטָשָׁ֣נוּ (has forsaken us) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖נוּ (and given us) בְּכַף־ (into the palm) מִדְיָֽן׃ (of Midian).

14  וַיִּ֤פֶן (And turned) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), לֵ֚ךְ (Go) בְּכֹחֲךָ֣ (in strength of yours) זֶ֔ה (this), וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֥ (and you shall save) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) מִכַּ֣ף (from the palm) מִדְיָ֑ן (of Midian). הֲלֹ֖א (Have not) שְׁלַחְתִּֽיךָ׃ (I sent you)?

15  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָיו֙ (to Him) בִּ֣י (Please), אֲדֹנָ֔י (my Lord), בַּמָּ֥ה (how) אוֹשִׁ֖יעַ (can I save) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel)? הִנֵּ֤ה (Indeed), אַלְפִּי֙ (my clan is) הַדַּ֣ל (the poorest) בִּמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (in Manasseh), וְאָנֹכִ֥י (and I am) הַצָּעִ֖יר (the least) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) אָבִֽי׃ (of my father).

16  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כִּ֥י (Surely) אֶהְיֶ֖ה (I will be) עִמָּ֑ךְ (with you) וְהִכִּיתָ֥ (and you shall defeat) אֶת־ (-) מִדְיָ֖ן (the Midianite) כְּאִ֥ישׁ (as man) אֶחָֽד׃ (one).

17  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלָ֔יו (to Him), אִם־ (If) נָ֛א (now) מָצָ֥אתִי (I have found) חֵ֖ן (favor) בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ (in Your eyes), וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ (and show) לִּי֙ (me) א֔וֹת (a sign) שָׁאַתָּ֖ה (that You) מְדַבֵּ֥ר (are speaking) עִמִּֽי׃ (with me). 18  אַל־ (Not), נָ֨א (please), תָמֻ֤שׁ (do depart) מִזֶּה֙ (from this place) עַד־ (until) בֹּאִ֣י (I come) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to You) וְהֹֽצֵאתִי֙ (and bring out) אֶת־ (-) מִנְחָתִ֔י (my offering), וְהִנַּחְתִּ֖י (and set it) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before Your face).

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (And He said), אָנֹכִ֥י (I) אֵשֵׁ֖ב (will wait) עַ֥ד (until) שׁוּבֶֽךָ׃ (you come back).

19  וְגִדְע֣וֹן (And Gideon) בָּ֗א (went in) וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (and prepared) גְּדִֽי־ (a kid) עִזִּים֙ (of the goats), וְאֵיפַת־ (and an ephah) קֶ֣מַח (of flour) מַצּ֔וֹת (of unleavened bread). הַבָּשָׂר֙ (The flesh) שָׂ֣ם (he put) בַּסַּ֔ל (in a basket), וְהַמָּרַ֖ק (and the broth) שָׂ֣ם (he put) בַּפָּר֑וּר (in a pot), וַיּוֹצֵ֥א (and he brought them out) אֵלָ֛יו (to Him) אֶל־ (to) תַּ֥חַת (under) הָאֵלָ֖ה (the oak), וַיַּגַּֽשׁ׃ס (and brought them near).

20  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God), קַ֣ח (Take) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּשָׂ֤ר (the flesh) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמַּצּוֹת֙ (the unleavened bread), וְהַנַּח֙ (and lay them) אֶל־ (on) הַסֶּ֣לַע (the rock) הַלָּ֔ז (this), וְאֶת־ (and) הַמָּרַ֖ק (the broth) שְׁפ֑וֹךְ (pour out). וַיַּ֖עַשׂ (And he did) כֵּֽן׃ (so).

21  וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח (And stretched out) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) אֶת־ (-) קְצֵ֤ה (the end) הַמִּשְׁעֶ֙נֶת֙ (of the staff) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בְּיָד֔וֹ (in his hand), וַיִּגַּ֥ע (and he touched) בַּבָּשָׂ֖ר (the flesh) וּבַמַּצּ֑וֹת (and the unleavened bread), וַתַּ֨עַל (and rose) הָאֵ֜שׁ (the fire) מִן־ (out) הַצּ֗וּר (of the rock) וַתֹּ֤אכַל (and consumed) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּשָׂר֙ (the flesh) וְאֶת־ (and) הַמַּצּ֔וֹת (the unleavened bread). וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ (And the angel) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הָלַ֖ךְ (departed) מֵעֵינָֽיו׃ (out of his sight).

22  וַיַּ֣רְא (And perceived) גִּדְע֔וֹן (Gideon) כִּֽי־ (that) מַלְאַ֥ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) ה֑וּאס (it was). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) גִּדְע֗וֹן (Gideon), אֲהָהּ֙ (Alas), אֲדֹנָ֣י (Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH)! כִּֽי־ (For) עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֤ן (that) רָאִ֙יתִי֙ (I have seen) מַלְאַ֣ךְ (the angel) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) פָּנִ֖ים (face) אֶל־ (to) פָּנִֽים׃ (face).

23  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) ל֧וֹ (to him) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH), שָׁל֥וֹם (Peace be) לְךָ֖ (with you). אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֑א (do fear); לֹ֖א (not) תָּמֽוּת׃ (you shall die).

24  וַיִּבֶן֩ (And built) שָׁ֨ם (there) גִּדְע֤וֹן (Gideon) מִזְבֵּ֙חַ֙ (an altar) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), וַיִּקְרָא־ (and he called) ל֥וֹ (it) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH-) שָׁל֑וֹם (Shalom). עַ֚ד (To) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) עוֹדֶ֕נּוּ (it is still) בְּעָפְרָ֖ת (in Ophrah of) אֲבִ֥י (the Abi-) הָעֶזְרִֽי׃פ (ezrites).

Gideon Destroys Baal’s Altar

25  וַיְהִי֮ (And it came to pass) בַּלַּ֣יְלָה (the night) הַהוּא֒ (that), וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (and said) ל֣וֹ (to him) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), קַ֤ח (Take) אֶת־ (-) פַּר־ (the young) הַשּׁוֹר֙ (bull), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לְאָבִ֔יךָ (of your father), וּפַ֥ר (and bull) הַשֵּׁנִ֖י (the second), שֶׁ֣בַע (of seven) שָׁנִ֑ים (years), וְהָרַסְתָּ֗ (and tear down) אֶת־ (-) מִזְבַּ֤ח (the altar) הַבַּ֙עַל֙ (of Baal) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) לְאָבִ֔יךָ (is to your father), וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה (the Asherah pole) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) עָלָ֖יו (beside it) תִּכְרֹֽת׃ (cut down). 26  וּבָנִ֨יתָ (And build) מִזְבֵּ֜חַ (an altar) לַיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God) עַ֣ל (on) רֹ֧אשׁ (top) הַמָּע֛וֹז (of the rock) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) בַּמַּֽעֲרָכָ֑ה (by the arrangement), וְלָֽקַחְתָּ֙ (and take) אֶת־ (-) הַפָּ֣ר (the bull) הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (second), וְהַעֲלִ֣יתָ (and offer) עוֹלָ֔ה (a burnt offering) בַּעֲצֵ֥י (with the wood) הָאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה (of the Asherah pole) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) תִּכְרֹֽת׃ (you shall cut down).

27  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) גִּדְע֜וֹן (Gideon) עֲשָׂרָ֤ה (ten) אֲנָשִׁים֙ (men) מֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יו (of his servants) וַיַּ֕עַשׂ (and did) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) דִּבֶּ֥ר (had said) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH). וַיְהִ֡י (And) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (because) יָרֵא֩ (he feared) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֨ית (the house) אָבִ֜יו (of his father) וְאֶת־ (and) אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) הָעִ֛יר (of the city) מֵעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do it) יוֹמָ֖ם (by day), וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (that he did it) לָֽיְלָה׃ (by night).

28  וַיַּשְׁכִּ֜ימוּ (And arose early) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (the men) הָעִיר֙ (of the city) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold) נֻתַּץ֙ (was torn down) מִזְבַּ֣ח (the altar) הַבַּ֔עַל (of Baal), וְהָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה (and the Asherah pole) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) עָלָ֖יו (beside it) כֹּרָ֑תָה (was cut down) וְאֵת֙ (and) הַפָּ֣ר (the bull) הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (the second) הֹֽעֲלָ֔ה (was being offered) עַל־ (on) הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (the altar) הַבָּנֽוּי׃ (the built one). 29  וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (And they said) אִ֣ישׁ (one) אֶל־ (to) רֵעֵ֔הוּ (another), מִ֥י (Who) עָשָׂ֖ה (has done) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the thing) הַזֶּ֑ה (this)?

וַֽיִּדְרְשׁוּ֙ (And they inquired) וַיְבַקְשׁ֔וּ (and asked), וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they said), גִּדְעוֹן֙ (Gideon) בֶּן־ (son) יוֹאָ֔שׁ (of Joash) עָשָׂ֖ה (has done) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

30  וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (And said) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (the men) הָעִיר֙ (of the city) אֶל־ (to) יוֹאָ֔שׁ (Joash), הוֹצֵ֥א (Bring out) אֶת־ (-) בִּנְךָ֖ (your son), וְיָמֹ֑ת (that he may die), כִּ֤י (because) נָתַץ֙ (he has torn down) אֶת־ (-) מִזְבַּ֣ח (the altar) הַבַּ֔עַל (of Baal), וְכִ֥י (and because) כָרַ֖ת (he has cut down) הָאֲשֵׁרָ֥ה (the Asherah pole) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) עָלָֽיו׃ (beside it).

31  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יוֹאָ֡שׁ (Joash) לְכֹל֩ (to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) עָמְד֨וּ (stood) עָלָ֜יו (against him), הַאַתֶּ֣ם׀ (Would you⁺) תְּרִיב֣וּן (plead) לַבַּ֗עַל (for Baal), אִם־ (if) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺) תּוֹשִׁיע֣וּן (would save) אוֹת֔וֹ (him)? אֲשֶׁ֨ר (The one who) יָרִ֥יב (would plead) ל֛וֹ (for him) יוּמַ֖ת (shall be put to death) עַד־ (by) הַבֹּ֑קֶר (the morning)! אִם־ (If) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (a god) הוּא֙ (he is), יָ֣רֶב (let him plead) ל֔וֹ (for himself) כִּ֥י (because) נָתַ֖ץ (has been torn down) אֶֽת־ (-) מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃ (his altar).

32  וַיִּקְרָא־ (Therefore he called) ל֥וֹ (him) בַיּוֹם־ (on day) הַה֖וּא (that) יְרֻבַּ֣עַל (Jerubbaal), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), יָ֤רֶב (Let plead) בּוֹ֙ (against him) הַבַּ֔עַל (Baal) כִּ֥י (because) נָתַ֖ץ (he has torn down) אֶֽת־ (-) מִזְבְּחֽוֹ׃פ (his altar).

The Sign of the Fleece

33  וְכָל־ (And all) מִדְיָ֧ן (the Midianite) וַעֲמָלֵ֛ק (and Amalekite) וּבְנֵי־ (and the sons) קֶ֖דֶם (of the East) נֶאֶסְפ֣וּ (gathered) יַחְדָּ֑ו (together), וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ (and they passed over) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and encamped) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ (of Jezreel).

34  וְר֣וּחַ (And the Spirit) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) לָבְשָׁ֖ה (came upon) אֶת־ (-) גִּדְע֑וֹן (Gideon), וַיִּתְקַע֙ (and he blew) בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר (on the shofar), וַיִזָּעֵ֥ק (and gathered) אֲבִיעֶ֖זֶר (the Abiezrites) אַחֲרָֽיו׃ (behind him). 35  וּמַלְאָכִים֙ (And messengers) שָׁלַ֣ח (he sent) בְּכָל־ (throughout all) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (Manasseh), וַיִזָּעֵ֥ק (and gathered) גַּם־ (also) ה֖וּא (he) אַחֲרָ֑יו (after him) וּמַלְאָכִ֣ים (and messengers). שָׁלַ֗ח (He sent) בְּאָשֵׁ֤ר (to Asher), וּבִזְבֻלוּן֙ (and Zebulun), וּבְנַפְתָּלִ֔י (and Naphtali), וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ (and they came up) לִקְרָאתָֽם׃ (to meet them).

36  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) גִּדְע֖וֹן (Gideon) אֶל־ (to) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), אִם־ (If) יֶשְׁךָ֞ (You) מוֹשִׁ֧יעַ (will save) בְּיָדִ֛י (by my hand) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ (You have said), 37  הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), אָנֹכִ֗י (I) מַצִּ֛יג (shall put) אֶת־ (-) גִּזַּ֥ת (a fleece) הַצֶּ֖מֶר (of the wool) בַּגֹּ֑רֶן (on the threshing floor). אִ֡ם (If) טַל֩ (dew) יִהְיֶ֨ה (there is) עַֽל־ (on) הַגִּזָּ֜ה (the fleece) לְבַדָּ֗הּ (only), וְעַל־ (and on) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the ground) חֹ֔רֶב (it is dry), וְיָדַעְתִּ֗י (and I shall know) כִּֽי־ (that) תוֹשִׁ֧יעַ (You will save) בְּיָדִ֛י (by my hand) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ (You have said).

38  וַיְהִי־ (And it was) כֵ֕ן (so), וַיַּשְׁכֵּם֙ (and he rose early) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת (the next morning) וַיָּ֖זַר (and squeezed) אֶת־ (-) הַגִּזָּ֑ה (the fleece), וַיִּ֤מֶץ (and he wrung) טַל֙ (the dew) מִן־ (out) הַגִּזָּ֔ה (of the fleece) מְל֥וֹא (the fullness) הַסֵּ֖פֶל (of the bowl) מָֽיִם׃ (of water).

39  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) גִּדְעוֹן֙ (Gideon) אֶל־ (to) הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), אַל־ (Not) יִ֤חַר (do be angry) אַפְּךָ֙ (-) בִּ֔י (with me), וַאֲדַבְּרָ֖ה (and let me speak) אַ֣ךְ (-) הַפָּ֑עַם (just once more). אֲנַסֶּ֤ה (Let me test), נָּא־ (please), רַק־ (only) הַפַּ֙עַם֙ (this time) בַּגִּזָּ֔ה (with the fleece). יְהִי־ (Let it be) נָ֨א (now) חֹ֤רֶב (dry) אֶל־ (on) הַגִּזָּה֙ (the fleece) לְבַדָּ֔הּ (only), וְעַל־ (and on) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the ground) יִֽהְיֶה־ (let there be) טָּֽל׃ (dew).

40  וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (And did) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) כֵּ֖ן (so) בַּלַּ֣יְלָה (the night) הַה֑וּא (that), וַיְהִי־ (and it was) חֹ֤רֶב (dry) אֶל־ (on) הַגִּזָּה֙ (the fleece) לְבַדָּ֔הּ (only), וְעַל־ (and on) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the ground) הָ֥יָה (there was) טָֽל׃פ (dew).
