Jeremiah 10

The Sovereignty of God

Hear the word

God calls His people to give careful attention to His revealed message. Hearing includes receiving His instruction as true and responding in obedience.

Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,…
Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…
Isa 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom;…

that the LORD speaks

The message carries the authority of Yahweh, Israel’s covenant God. Jeremiah speaks as God’s appointed prophet, not as a teacher offering his own opinion.

Israel remains bound to God by the covenant made with their fathers. Though Jeremiah ministered in Judah, God’s word concerns the whole covenant people, whose history was marked by both His faithfulness and their repeated rebellion.

Idols were often fashioned from wood and covered with precious metals to give them an appearance of splendor and worth. Such decoration could not make a man-made object divine; it only concealed its ordinary materials.

Jer 2:11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods…)…

There is none like You, O LORD.

Jeremiah sets the God of Israel above every idol honored by the surrounding nations. Unlike carved images that cannot speak, act, or save, Yahweh is living, personal, and without equal. His covenant name recalls His faithful relationship with Israel despite the nation’s rebellion and coming judgment.

2Sa 7:22 How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You…
Psa 86:8 O Lord, there is none like You among the gods,…
Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…

You are great,

God’s greatness includes His rule over creation, nations, kings, and history. Judah faced the threat of Babylon, yet no empire or false god could rival the Lord’s authority. He alone directs events according to His purposes.

Psa 95:3 For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.
Neh 9:5 Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah…

and Your name is mighty in power.

God’s revealed name carries the authority of His person and deeds. The Lord had demonstrated that power in delivering Israel from Egypt, establishing them in the land, and judging those who opposed Him. Jeremiah affirms that the God who brings judgment also possesses complete power to preserve His people and fulfill His promises.

Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place…
Exo 15:3 The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is His name.

Who would not fear You, O King of nations?

God alone rules over every people and kingdom. Earthly kings possessed limited authority and often claimed divine status, but Jeremiah declares that the Lord stands above them all. The fear due Him is reverent acknowledgment of His holiness, power, and rightful rule.

Psa 47:7-8 For God is King of all the earth; sing to Him…
Rev 15:4 Who will not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?…

The Coming Captivity of Judah

Gather up your belongings from this land,

Jeremiah calls Judah’s inhabitants to prepare for forced removal. Babylon’s growing power would bring God’s judgment on Jerusalem for persistent idolatry and rebellion. Their possessions could not secure them from the coming disaster or prevent exile.

Exo 40:2 On the first day of the first month, set up the tabernacle…
Jos 18:1 Then the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh.…

or set up my curtains.

The dwelling lies exposed and abandoned. What had been a settled community is reduced to ruin, showing the full extent of the coming judgment upon Judah.

Exo 26:1 You are to construct the tabernacle itself…
2Sa 7:2 he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am”…

For the shepherds have become senseless;

Israel’s kings, priests, and prophets had failed in their duty to guide and protect the people. Instead of exercising wisdom and faithful leadership, they acted without understanding and led the nation toward ruin.

Isa 56:10-11 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious;…
Jer 23:1-2 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter…
Ezk 34:2-5 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel…

they do not seek the LORD.

Their failure began with rejecting God’s direction. Rather than seeking Him in obedience, they trusted idolatry, political alliances, and human plans.

2Ch 12:14 And Rehoboam did evil because he did not set…
Hos 7:10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not…
Isa 9:13 But the people did not return to Him who struck them;…

Therefore they have not prospered,

Because the leaders abandoned the LORD, their rule brought neither peace nor security. The nation’s spiritual decline was accompanied by weakness, disorder, and approaching judgment.

2Ch 24:20 Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada…
Jer 2:37 Moreover, you will leave that place with your hands…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…

and all their flock is scattered.

The people suffered under faithless leadership and became vulnerable to their enemies. The image anticipates Judah’s defeat and dispersal through the Babylonian exile.

1Ki 22:17 So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel…
Ezk 34:5-6 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,…
Zec 13:7 Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, against the man…

Listen!

Jeremiah calls Judah to heed the approaching judgment God has revealed. The warning demands immediate attention because the danger is no longer distant.

Jer 22:29 O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD!
Isa 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth…

The sound of a report is coming—

News of an advancing army is already spreading. Jeremiah announces what the nation will soon experience as Babylon moves against Judah.

Oba 1:1 This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom…
Jer 49:14 I have heard a message from the LORD;…
Ezk 7:26 Disaster upon disaster will come, and rumor after rumor.…

a great commotion from the land to the north.

Babylon’s armies normally entered the land from the north, following the routes around the desert. Their advance would bring fear, confusion, and violence throughout Judah.

Jer 6:1 Run for cover, O sons of Benjamin; flee from Jerusalem!…
Jer 4:6 Raise a signal flag toward Zion. Seek refuge! Do not delay!…
Jer 1:14-15 Then the LORD said to me, “Disaster from the north…

It will make the cities of Judah a desolation,

The invasion would devastate Judah’s towns and leave many places abandoned. This judgment came after persistent rebellion against the Lord despite repeated prophetic warnings.

Jer 34:22 Behold, I am going to give the command, declares the LORD…
Jer 25:18 make them a ruin, an object of horror and contempt…
Ezk 12:20 The inhabited cities will be laid waste…

a haunt for jackals.

Empty ruins would become wilderness inhabited by scavenging animals, showing how completely the land and its cities would be laid waste.

Isa 34:13 Her towers will be overgrown with thorns…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

I know, O LORD,

Jeremiah addresses the covenant God with humility and confidence, acknowledging that the Lord alone fully understands the course of human life.

Psa 119:75 I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are righteous,…
Job 42:2 I know that You can do all things and that no plan of Yours…
Psa 139:1-2 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD,…

that a man’s way is not his own;

Though people make plans and choices, they do not possess ultimate control over their future. Judah’s leaders had pursued political alliances and their own counsel, but their course remained under God’s authority.

Pro 16:9 A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines…
Psa 37:23 The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD…
Pro 20:24 A man’s steps are from the LORD, so how can…

no one who walks directs his own steps.

In the crisis preceding Jerusalem’s fall, Jeremiah recognized that neither individuals nor nations could secure their path apart from the Lord’s direction. Human wisdom and power could not prevent the judgment God had determined.

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not…
Psa 25:4-5 Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.…
Psa 143:10 Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.…

Correct me, O LORD,

Jeremiah asks God to discipline His people rather than abandon them. Judah’s rebellion deserved judgment, yet the prophet appeals to the covenant God who remains faithful to His purposes.

Job 5:17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; …
Psa 94:12 Blessed is the man You discipline, O LORD,…
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…

but only with justice—

He seeks correction measured by God’s righteous judgment, suited to their sin and intended to bring them to repentance rather than erase them as a people.

Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…
Psa 98:9 before the LORD, for He comes to judge the earth.…

not in Your anger,

God’s anger against Judah’s idolatry and disobedience was justified, especially as Babylon’s invasion approached. Jeremiah pleads that judgment would be tempered by mercy.

Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…
Psa 38:1 A Psalm of David, for remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me…
Lam 3:31-33 For the Lord will not cast us off forever.…

or You will bring me to nothing.

Apart from God’s mercy, Judah could not survive the consequences of its sin. The coming exile would devastate the nation, but God would preserve a remnant and fulfill His promises.

Psa 90:7-9 For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified…
Psa 39:10-11 Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing…
Psa 102:9-10 For I have eaten ashes like bread and mixed my drink…

Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You,

Jeremiah calls on God to judge the pagan powers that reject His rule and persecute His covenant people. Nations such as Assyria and Babylon had acted with cruelty and idolatry, though Babylon itself had been used as God’s instrument to discipline Judah.

Psa 79:6 Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge…
2Th 1:8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…
Psa 9:17 The wicked will return to Sheol—all the nations…

and on the families that do not call on Your name.

God’s judgment reaches beyond rulers and armies to households that refuse to worship and obey Him. Every level of society is accountable to the Lord.

Isa 64:7 No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You.…
Jol 2:32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved…
Rom 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord…

For they have devoured Jacob;

Jacob represents Israel, the people descended from the patriarch. Foreign invaders had overwhelmed the northern kingdom and later Judah, treating God’s people as prey.

Psa 79:7 for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.
Mic 3:3 You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off…
Hos 8:8 Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations…

they have consumed him and finished him off;

The devastation was severe: cities were destroyed, many were killed, and survivors were carried into exile. Babylon’s destruction of Jerusalem brought Judah to the edge of national collapse.

Psa 83:4 Come, let us erase them as a nation; may the name of Israel…
Jer 51:34 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured me;…
Lam 2:16 All your enemies open their mouths against you.…

they have devastated his homeland.

The promised land was left desolate through war, exile, and the destruction of its towns and fields. Yet the judgment of Judah’s enemies did not cancel God’s covenant purposes or His promise to restore His people.

Psa 79:1 A Psalm of Asaph. The nations, O God, have invaded…
Isa 64:10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness.…
Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
