Goliath’s Challenge

1  וַיַּאַסְפ֨וּ (And gathered together) פְלִשְׁתִּ֤ים (the Philistines) אֶת־ (-) מַֽחֲנֵיהֶם֙ (their camps) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (for the battle), וַיֵּאָ֣סְפ֔וּ (and they were gathered together) שֹׂכֹ֖ה (at Sochoh) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) לִיהוּדָ֑ה (to Judah), וַֽיַּחֲנ֛וּ (and they encamped) בֵּין־ (between) שׂוֹכֹ֥ה (Sochoh) וּבֵין־ (and between) עֲזֵקָ֖ה (Azekah) בְּאֶ֥פֶס (in Ephes-) דַּמִּֽים׃ (dammim). 2  וְשָׁא֤וּל (And Saul) וְאִֽישׁ־ (and the men) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) נֶאֶסְפ֔וּ (were gathered together), וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and they encamped) בְּעֵ֣מֶק (in the Valley) הָאֵלָ֑ה (of Elah) וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ (and arrayed) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (for battle) לִקְרַ֥את (against) פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (the Philistines).

3  וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֞ים (And the Philistines) עֹמְדִ֤ים (stood) אֶל־ (on) הָהָר֙ (the mountain) מִזֶּ֔ה (on this side), וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (and Israel) עֹמְדִ֥ים (stood) אֶל־ (on) הָהָ֖ר (the mountain) מִזֶּ֑ה (on this side), וְהַגַּ֖יְא (and the valley) בֵּינֵיהֶֽם׃ (was between them).

4  וַיֵּצֵ֤א (And went out) אִֽישׁ־ (a man), הַבֵּנַ֙יִם֙ (a champion) מִמַּחֲנ֣וֹת (from the camp) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines), גָּלְיָ֥ת (Goliath) שְׁמ֖וֹ (named), מִגַּ֑ת (from Gath). גָּבְה֕וֹ (His height) שֵׁ֥שׁ (was six) אַמּ֖וֹת (cubits) וָזָֽרֶת׃ (and a span). 5  וְכ֤וֹבַע (And a helmet) נְחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (of brass) עַל־ (was on) רֹאשׁ֔וֹ (his head), וְשִׁרְי֥וֹן (and with a coat) קַשְׂקַשִּׂ֖ים (of mail) ה֣וּא (he) לָב֑וּשׁ (and was clothed), וּמִשְׁקַל֙ (and the weight) הַשִּׁרְי֔וֹן (of the coat) חֲמֵשֶׁת־ (was five) אֲלָפִ֥ים (thousand) שְׁקָלִ֖ים (shekels) נְחֹֽשֶֽׁת׃ (of bronze). 6  וּמִצְחַ֥ת (And a frontlet) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (of bronze) עַל־ (was on) רַגְלָ֑יו (his legs), וְכִיד֥וֹן (and a javelin) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (of bronze) בֵּ֥ין (between) כְּתֵפָֽיו׃ (his shoulders). 7  וְחָץ (And the staff) חֲנִית֗וֹ (of his spear was) כִּמְנוֹר֙ (like a beam) אֹֽרְגִ֔ים (of weavers), וְלַהֶ֣בֶת (and the flame) חֲנִית֔וֹ (of his spear) שֵׁשׁ־ (was six) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) שְׁקָלִ֖ים (shekels) בַּרְזֶ֑ל (of iron). וְנֹשֵׂ֥א (And the bearer) הַצִּנָּ֖ה (of the buckler) הֹלֵ֥ךְ (went) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before his face).

8  וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד (And he stood) וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and cried out) אֶל־ (to) מַעַרְכֹ֣ת (the ranks) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) לָהֶ֔ם (to them), לָ֥מָּה (Why) תֵצְא֖וּ (have you⁺ come out) לַעֲרֹ֣ךְ (to draw up lines) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (for battle)? הֲל֧וֹא (Am not) אָנֹכִ֣י (I) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗י (a Philistine), וְאַתֶּם֙ (and you⁺) עֲבָדִ֣ים (the servants) לְשָׁא֔וּל (of Saul)? בְּרוּ־ (Choose) לָכֶ֥ם (for yourselves) אִ֖ישׁ (a man), וְיֵרֵ֥ד (and let him come down) אֵלָֽי׃ (to me). 9  אִם־ (If) יוּכַ֞ל (he is able) לְהִלָּחֵ֤ם (to fight) אִתִּי֙ (with me) וְהִכָּ֔נִי (and kill me), וְהָיִ֥ינוּ (then we will become) לָכֶ֖ם (your⁺) לַעֲבָדִ֑ים (servants). וְאִם־ (But if) אֲנִ֤י (I) אֽוּכַל־ (prevail) לוֹ֙ (against him) וְהִכִּיתִ֔יו (and kill him), וִהְיִ֤יתֶם (then you⁺ will become) לָ֙נוּ֙ (our) לַעֲבָדִ֔ים (servants) וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֖ם (and serve) אֹתָֽנוּ׃ (us).

10  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (the Philistine), אֲנִ֗י (I) חֵרַ֛פְתִּי (defy) אֶת־ (-) מַעַרְכ֥וֹת (the ranks) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) הַיּ֣וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֑ה (this)! תְּנוּ־ (Give) לִ֣י (to me) אִ֔ישׁ (a man), וְנִֽלָּחֲמָ֖ה (that we may fight) יָֽחַד׃ (together).

11  וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And heard) שָׁאוּל֙ (Saul) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (of the Philistine) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיֵּחַ֥תּוּ (and they were dismayed) וַיִּֽרְא֖וּ (and afraid) מְאֹֽד׃פ (greatly).

David Accepts the Challenge

12  וְדָוִד֩ (And David) בֶּן־ (is son) אִ֨ישׁ (of a man), אֶפְרָתִ֜י (an Ephrathite) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) מִבֵּ֥ית (from Beth-) לֶ֙חֶם֙ (lehem) יְהוּדָ֔ה (in Judah) וּשְׁמ֣וֹ (and his name was) יִשַׁ֔י (Jesse). וְל֖וֹ (And were to him) שְׁמֹנָ֣ה (eight) בָנִ֑ים (sons) וְהָאִישׁ֙ (and among men). בִּימֵ֣י (In the days) שָׁא֔וּל (of Saul) זָקֵ֖ן (he had become aged) בָּ֥א (among) בַאֲנָשִֽׁים׃ (men). 13  וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ (And had gone) שְׁלֹ֤שֶׁת (three) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשַׁי֙ (of Jesse) הַגְּדֹלִ֔ים (the oldest) הָלְכ֥וּ (to follow) אַחֲרֵי־ (after) שָׁא֖וּל (Saul) לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (to the battle). וְשֵׁ֣ם׀ (And the names) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (of three) בָּנָ֗יו (his sons) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) הָלְכוּ֙ (went) בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (to the battle) אֱלִיאָ֣ב (were Eliab) הַבְּכ֗וֹר (the firstborn), וּמִשְׁנֵ֙הוּ֙ (and his second) אֲבִ֣ינָדָ֔ב (Abinadab), וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֖י (and the third) שַׁמָּֽה׃ (Shammah). 14  וְדָוִ֖ד (And David) ה֣וּא (was) הַקָּטָ֑ן (the youngest),

וּשְׁלֹשָׁה֙ (and three) הַגְּדֹלִ֔ים (the oldest) הָלְכ֖וּ (followed) אַחֲרֵ֥י (-) שָׁאֽוּל׃ס (Saul). 15  וְדָוִ֛ד (And David) הֹלֵ֥ךְ (went) וָשָׁ֖ב (and returned) מֵעַ֣ל (from) שָׁא֑וּל (Saul) לִרְע֛וֹת (to feed) אֶת־ (-) צֹ֥אן (the flock) אָבִ֖יו (of his father) בֵּֽית־ (in Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem).

16  וַיִּגַּ֥שׁ (And drew near) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (the Philistine) הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם (morning) וְהַעֲרֵ֑ב (and evening), וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֖ב (and he stationed himself) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) יֽוֹם׃פ (days).

17  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יִשַׁ֜י (Jesse) לְדָוִ֣ד (to David) בְּנ֗וֹ (his son), קַח־ (Take) נָ֤א (now) לְאַחֶ֙יךָ֙ (for your brothers) אֵיפַ֤ת (an ephah) הַקָּלִיא֙ (of roasted grain) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), וַעֲשָׂרָ֥ה (and ten loaves) לֶ֖חֶם (of bread) הַזֶּ֑ה (these), וְהָרֵ֥ץ (and run) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (to the camp) לְאַחֶֽיךָ׃ (to your brothers). 18  וְ֠אֵת (And) עֲשֶׂ֜רֶת (ten) חֲרִצֵ֤י (cuttings) הֶֽחָלָב֙ (of the cheese) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) תָּבִ֖יא (carry) לְשַׂר־ (to the captain) הָאָ֑לֶף (of the thousand), וְאֶת־ (and) אַחֶ֙יךָ֙ (your brothers) תִּפְקֹ֣ד (inspect) לְשָׁל֔וֹם (for welfare), וְאֶת־ (and) עֲרֻבָּתָ֖ם (their pledge) תִּקָּֽח׃ (bring back). 19  וְשָׁא֤וּל (And Saul), וְהֵ֙מָּה֙ (and they), וְכָל־ (and all) אִ֣ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בְּעֵ֖מֶק (were in the Valley) הָֽאֵלָ֑ה (of Elah), נִלְחָמִ֖ים (fighting) עִם־ (with) פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (the Philistines).

20  וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם (And rose early) דָּוִ֜ד (David) בַּבֹּ֗קֶר (in the morning), וַיִּטֹּ֤שׁ (and left) אֶת־ (-) הַצֹּאן֙ (the flock) עַל־ (with) שֹׁמֵ֔ר (a keeper), וַיִּשָּׂ֣א (and loaded up), וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ (and went) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּ֖הוּ (had commanded him) יִשָׁ֑י (Jesse). וַיָּבֹא֙ (And he came) הַמַּעְגָּ֔לָה (to the camp) וְהַחַ֗יִל (and to the force) הַיֹּצֵא֙ (going out) אֶל־ (to) הַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה (the fight) וְהֵרֵ֖עוּ (and shouting) בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (for the battle). 21  וַתַּעֲרֹ֤ךְ (And for had arrayed) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (and the Philistines) מַעֲרָכָ֖ה (rank) לִקְרַ֥את (against) מַעֲרָכָֽה׃ (rank).

22  וַיִּטֹּשׁ֩ (And left) דָּוִ֨ד (David) אֶת־ (-) הַכֵּלִ֜ים (supplies) מֵעָלָ֗יו (his) עַל־ (in) יַד֙ (the hand) שׁוֹמֵ֣ר (of the keeper) הַכֵּלִ֔ים (of the goods), וַיָּ֖רָץ (and he ran) הַמַּעֲרָכָ֑ה (into the rank), וַיָּבֹ֕א (and came) וַיִּשְׁאַ֥ל (and asked) לְאֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (of welfare). 23  וְה֣וּא׀ (And as he) מְדַבֵּ֣ר (talked) עִמָּ֗ם (with them), וְהִנֵּ֣ה (and behold) אִ֣ישׁ (a man), הַבֵּנַ֡יִם (the champion), עוֹלֶ֞ה (was coming up), גָּלְיָת֩ (Goliath) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֨י (the Philistine) שְׁמ֤וֹ (by name), מִגַּת֙ (of Gath), מִמַּעֲרוֹת (from the armies) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines). וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר (And he spoke) כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע (and heard) דָּוִֽד׃ (David).

24  וְכֹל֙ (And all) אִ֣ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), בִּרְאוֹתָ֖ם (when they saw) אֶת־ (-) הָאִ֑ישׁ (the man), וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙ (and fled) מִפָּנָ֔יו (from him) וַיִּֽירְא֖וּ (and were afraid) מְאֹֽד׃ (greatly).

25  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (And said) אִ֣ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), הַרְּאִיתֶם֙ (Have you⁺ seen) הָאִ֤ישׁ (the man) הָֽעֹלֶה֙ (who has come up) הַזֶּ֔ה (this)? כִּ֛י (Surely) לְחָרֵ֥ף (to defy) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) עֹלֶ֑ה (he has come up). וְֽ֠הָיָה (And it shall come to pass), הָאִ֨ישׁ (that the man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יַכֶּ֜נּוּ (kills him) יַעְשְׁרֶ֥נּוּ (will enrich) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ׀ (the king) עֹ֣שֶׁר (with riches) גָּד֗וֹל (great), וְאֶת־ (and) בִּתּוֹ֙ (his daughter) יִתֶּן־ (will give) ל֔וֹ (to him), וְאֵת֙ (and) בֵּ֣ית (house) אָבִ֔יו (of his father) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (he will make) חָפְשִׁ֖י (free) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel).

26  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And spoke) דָּוִ֗ד (David) אֶֽל־ (to) הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים (the men) הָעֹמְדִ֣ים (who stood) עִמּוֹ֮ (by him), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), מַה־ (What) יֵּעָשֶׂ֗ה (shall be done) לָאִישׁ֙ (for the man) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) יַכֶּה֙ (kills) אֶת־ (-) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֣י (the Philistine) הַלָּ֔ז (this) וְהֵסִ֥יר (and takes away) חֶרְפָּ֖ה (the reproach) מֵעַ֣ל (from upon) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel)? כִּ֣י (For) מִ֗י (who is) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֤י (the Philistine) הֶֽעָרֵל֙ (uncircumcised) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), כִּ֣י (that) חֵרֵ֔ף (he should defy) מַעַרְכ֖וֹת (the ranks) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (of the God) חַיִּֽים׃ (living)?

27  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And answered) לוֹ֙ (him) הָעָ֔ם (the people) כַּדָּבָ֥ר (in manner) הַזֶּ֖ה (this), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), כֹּ֣ה (So) יֵעָשֶׂ֔ה (shall it be done) לָאִ֖ישׁ (for the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יַכֶּֽנּוּ׃ (kills him).

28  וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And heard) אֱלִיאָב֙ (Eliab) אָחִ֣יו (brother) הַגָּד֔וֹל (his oldest) בְּדַבְּר֖וֹ (when he spoke) אֶל־ (to) הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים (the men), וַיִּֽחַר־ (and was kindled) אַף֩ (the anger) אֱלִיאָ֨ב (of Eliab) בְּדָוִ֜ד (against David), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר׀ (and he said), לָמָּה־ (Why) זֶּ֣ה (is this) יָרַ֗דְתָּ (that you came down), וְעַל־ (and with) מִ֨י (whom) נָטַ֜שְׁתָּ (have you left) מְעַ֨ט (few) הַצֹּ֤אן (the sheep) הָהֵ֙נָּה֙ (those) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness)? אֲנִ֧י (I) יָדַ֣עְתִּי (know) אֶת־ (-) זְדֹנְךָ֗ (your pride) וְאֵת֙ (and) רֹ֣עַ (the insolence) לְבָבֶ֔ךָ (of your heart), כִּ֗י (for) לְמַ֛עַן (in order) רְא֥וֹת (to see) הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (the battle) יָרָֽדְתָּ׃ (you have come down).

29  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said), דָּוִ֔ד (David) מֶ֥ה (What) עָשִׂ֖יתִי (have I done)? עָ֑תָּה (Now) הֲל֖וֹא (was not) דָּבָ֥ר (a word) הֽוּא׃ (it)? 30  וַיִּסֹּ֤ב (And he turned) מֵֽאֶצְלוֹ֙ (from him) אֶל־ (toward) מ֣וּל (front) אַחֵ֔ר (another), וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and he spoke) כַּדָּבָ֣ר (word) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וַיְשִׁבֻ֤הוּ (and answered him) הָעָם֙ (the people) דָּבָ֔ר (a word) כַּדָּבָ֖ר (word) הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃ (as the first).

31  וַיְּשָּֽׁמְעוּ֙ (And were heard) הַדְּבָרִ֔ים (the words) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (spoke) דָּוִ֑ד (David), וַיַּגִּ֥דוּ (and they reported them) לִפְנֵֽי־ (to) שָׁא֖וּל (Saul), וַיִּקָּחֵֽהוּ׃ (and he sent for him).

32  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) דָּוִד֙ (David) אֶל־ (to) שָׁא֔וּל (Saul), אַל־ (Not) יִפֹּ֥ל (let fail) לֵב־ (heart) אָדָ֖ם (of man) עָלָ֑יו (because of him). עַבְדְּךָ֣ (Your servant) יֵלֵ֔ךְ (will go) וְנִלְחַ֖ם (and fight) עִם־ (with) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֥י (the Philistine) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

33  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) שָׁא֜וּל (Saul) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֗ד (David), לֹ֤א (Not) תוּכַל֙ (You are able) לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ (to go) אֶל־ (against) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֣י (the Philistine) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם (to fight) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him), כִּֽי־ (for) נַ֣עַר (a youth) אַ֔תָּה (you are), וְה֛וּא (and he is) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (of war) מִנְּעֻרָֽיו׃ס (from his youth).

34  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) דָּוִד֙ (David) אֶל־ (to) שָׁא֔וּל (Saul), רֹעֶ֨ה (Pasturing) הָיָ֧ה (has been) עַבְדְּךָ֛ (your servant) לְאָבִ֖יו (of his father) בַּצֹּ֑אן (the sheep), וּבָ֤א (and came) הָֽאֲרִי֙ (the lion), וְאֶת־ (or) הַדּ֔וֹב (the bear), וְנָשָׂ֥א (and carried away) שֶׂ֖ה (a lamb) מֵהָעֵֽדֶר׃ (out of the flock), 35  וְיָצָ֧אתִי (and I went out) אַחֲרָ֛יו (after it) וְהִכִּתִ֖יו (and struck it) וְהִצַּ֣לְתִּי (and snatched it up) מִפִּ֑יו (from its mouth). וַיָּ֣קָם (And it arose) עָלַ֔י (against me) וְהֶחֱזַ֙קְתִּי֙ (and I caught it) בִּזְקָנ֔וֹ (by its beard), וְהִכִּתִ֖יו (and struck it down) וַהֲמִיתִּֽיו׃ (and killed it). 36  גַּ֧ם (Even) אֶֽת־ (-) הָאֲרִ֛י (the lion) גַּם־ (and) הַדּ֖וֹב (the bear) הִכָּ֣ה (has killed) עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (your servant), וְֽ֠הָיָה (and will be) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֨י (the Philistine) הֶעָרֵ֤ל (uncircumcised) הַזֶּה֙ (this) כְּאַחַ֣ד (like one) מֵהֶ֔ם (of them), כִּ֣י (for) חֵרֵ֔ף (he has defied) מַעַרְכֹ֖ת (the armies) אֱלֹהִ֥ים (of the God) חַיִּֽים׃ס (living).

37  וַיֹּאמֶר֮ (And said) דָּוִד֒ (David), יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) הִצִּלַ֜נִי (snatched me up) מִיַּ֤ד (from the hand) הָֽאֲרִי֙ (of the lion) וּמִיַּ֣ד (and from the hand) הַדֹּ֔ב (of the bear), ה֣וּא (He) יַצִּילֵ֔נִי (will deliver me) מִיַּ֥ד (from the hand) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (of the Philistine) הַזֶּ֑הס (this).

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) שָׁא֤וּל (Saul) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִד֙ (David), לֵ֔ךְ (Go), וַֽיהוָ֖ה (and YHWH) יִהְיֶ֥ה (be) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you).

David Slays Goliath

38  וַיַּלְבֵּ֨שׁ (And clothed) שָׁא֤וּל (Saul) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִד֙ (David) מַדָּ֔יו (with his armor), וְנָתַ֛ן (and he put) ק֥וֹבַע (a helmet) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (bronze) עַל־ (on) רֹאשׁ֑וֹ (his head), וַיַּלְבֵּ֥שׁ (and he clothed) אֹת֖וֹ (him) שִׁרְיֽוֹן׃ (in armor). 39  וַיַּחְגֹּ֣ר (And fastened) דָּוִ֣ד (David) אֶת־ (-) חַ֠רְבּוֹ (his sword) מֵעַ֨ל (above) לְמַדָּ֜יו (his long robe) וַיֹּ֣אֶל (and began) לָלֶכֶת֮ (to go), כִּ֣י (for) לֹֽא־ (not) נִסָּה֒ (he had tested them).

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֜ד (David) אֶל־ (to) שָׁא֗וּל (Saul), לֹ֥א (Not) אוּכַ֛ל (I) לָלֶ֥כֶת (can walk) בָּאֵ֖לֶּה (with these), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֣א (not) נִסִּ֑יתִי (I have tested them). וַיְסִרֵ֥ם (And turned them aside) דָּוִ֖ד (David) מֵעָלָֽיו׃ (from himself). 40  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And he took) מַקְל֜וֹ (his staff) בְּיָד֗וֹ (in his hand), וַיִּבְחַר־ (and he chose) ל֣וֹ (for himself) חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה (five) חַלֻּקֵֽי־ (smooth) אֲבָנִ֣ים׀ (stones) מִן־ (from) הַנַּ֡חַל (the brook), וַיָּ֣שֶׂם (and he put) אֹ֠תָם (them) בִּכְלִ֨י (in a bag) הָרֹעִ֧ים (of the shepherd) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) ל֛וֹ (unto him), וּבַיַּלְק֖וּט (even in the pouch). וְקַלְּע֣וֹ (And his sling was) בְיָד֑וֹ (in his hand), וַיִּגַּ֖שׁ (and he drew near) אֶל־ (to) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽי׃ (the Philistine).

41  וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ (And came) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (the Philistine) הֹלֵ֥ךְ (going) וְקָרֵ֖ב (and drawing near) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֑ד (David), וְהָאִ֛ישׁ (and the man went) נֹשֵׂ֥א (who bore) הַצִּנָּ֖ה (the shield) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before him). 42  וַיַּבֵּ֧ט (And looked about) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛י (the Philistine) וַיִּרְאֶ֥ה (and saw) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֖ד (David) וַיִּבְזֵ֑הוּ (and despised him), כִּֽי־ (for) הָיָ֣ה (he was) נַ֔עַר (a youth), וְאַדְמֹנִ֖י (and ruddy), עִם־ (with) יְפֵ֥ה (a fair) מַרְאֶֽה׃ (appearance). 43  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי֙ (the Philistine) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֔ד (David), הֲכֶ֣לֶב (A dog) אָנֹ֔כִי (am I), כִּֽי־ (that) אַתָּ֥ה (you) בָֽא־ (would come) אֵלַ֖י (to me) בַּמַּקְל֑וֹת (with sticks)? וַיְקַלֵּ֧ל (And cursed) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛י (the Philistine) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֖ד (David) בֵּאלֹהָֽיו׃ (by his gods). 44  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (the Philistine) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֑ד (David), לְכָ֣ה (Come) אֵלַ֔י (to me), וְאֶתְּנָה֙ (and I will give) אֶת־ (-) בְּשָׂ֣רְךָ֔ (your flesh) לְע֥וֹף (to the bird) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens), וּלְבֶהֱמַ֥ת (and to the beast) הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ס (of the field).

45  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) דָּוִד֙ (David) אֶל־ (to) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (the Philistine), אַתָּה֙ (You) בָּ֣א (come) אֵלַ֔י (to me) בְּחֶ֖רֶב (with the sword), וּבַחֲנִ֣ית (and with the spear), וּבְכִיד֑וֹן (and with the javelin), וְאָנֹכִ֣י (and I) בָֽא־ (come) אֵלֶ֗יךָ (to you) בְּשֵׁם֙ (in the name) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) צְבָא֔וֹת (of Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֛י (the God) מַעַרְכ֥וֹת (of the ranks) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) חֵרַֽפְתָּ׃ (you have defied). 46  הַיּ֣וֹם (The day) הַזֶּ֡ה (this) יְסַגֶּרְךָ֩ (will deliver you) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) בְּיָדִ֜י (into my hand), וְהִכִּיתִ֗ךָ (and I will strike you) וַהֲסִרֹתִ֤י (and take) אֶת־ (-) רֹֽאשְׁךָ֙ (your head) מֵעָלֶ֔יךָ (from you), וְנָ֨תַתִּ֜י (and I will give) פֶּ֣גֶר (the carcass) מַחֲנֵ֤ה (of the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ (of the Philistines) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) לְע֥וֹף (to the bird) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens), וּלְחַיַּ֣ת (and to the beast) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth), וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ (that may know) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth) כִּ֛י (that) יֵ֥שׁ (there is) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (a God) לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel). 47  וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ (And shall know) כָּל־ (all) הַקָּהָ֣ל (the assembly) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) כִּֽי־ (that) לֹ֛א (not) בְּחֶ֥רֶב (with sword) וּבַחֲנִ֖ית (and with the spear) יְהוֹשִׁ֣יעַ (does save) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), כִּ֤י (for) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH) הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (is the battle), וְנָתַ֥ן (and He will give) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) בְּיָדֵֽנוּ׃ (into our hands).

48  וְהָיָה֙ (And it came to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) קָ֣ם (arose) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (the Philistine) וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (and came) וַיִּקְרַ֖ב (and drew near) לִקְרַ֣את (to meet) דָּוִ֑ד (David), וַיְמַהֵ֣ר (that hurried) דָּוִ֔ד (David) וַיָּ֥רָץ (and ran) הַמַּעֲרָכָ֖ה (to the rank) לִקְרַ֥את (to meet) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽי׃ (the Philistine). 49  וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ (And put) דָּוִ֨ד (David) אֶת־ (-) יָד֜וֹ (his hand) אֶל־ (in) הַכֶּ֗לִי (the vessel), וַיִּקַּ֨ח (and took) מִשָּׁ֥ם (out) אֶ֙בֶן֙ (a stone), וַיְקַלַּ֔ע (and he slung it) וַיַּ֥ךְ (and struck) אֶת־ (-) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (the Philistine) אֶל־ (in) מִצְח֑וֹ (his forehead), וַתִּטְבַּ֤ע (and sank) הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ (the stone) בְּמִצְח֔וֹ (into his forehead). וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (And he fell) עַל־ (on) פָּנָ֖יו (his face) אָֽרְצָה׃ (to the ground).

50  וַיֶּחֱזַ֨ק (And prevailed) דָּוִ֤ד (David) מִן־ (over) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי֙ (the Philistine) בַּקֶּ֣לַע (with the sling) וּבָאֶ֔בֶן (and with the stone), וַיַּ֥ךְ (and he struck) אֶת־ (-) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (the Philistine), וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ (and killed him). וְחֶ֖רֶב (And sword) אֵ֥ין (was not) בְּיַד־ (in the hand) דָּוִֽד׃ (of David). 51  וַיָּ֣רָץ (And ran) דָּ֠וִד (David) וַיַּעֲמֹ֨ד (and stood) אֶל־ (over) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜י (the Philistine), וַיִּקַּ֣ח (and he took) אֶת־ (-) חַ֠רְבּוֹ (his sword) וַֽיִּשְׁלְפָ֤הּ (and drew it) מִתַּעְרָהּ֙ (out of its sheath), וַיְמֹ֣תְתֵ֔הוּ (and he killed him) וַיִּכְרָת־ (and cut off) בָּ֖הּ (with it) אֶת־ (-) רֹאשׁ֑וֹ (his head).

וַיִּרְא֧וּ (And saw) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛ים (the Philistines) כִּֽי־ (that) מֵ֥ת (was dead) גִּבּוֹרָ֖ם (their champion), וַיָּנֻֽסוּ׃ (and they fled). 52  וַיָּקֻ֣מוּ (And arose) אַנְשֵׁי֩ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל (of Israel) וִיהוּדָ֜ה (and Judah), וַיָּרִ֗עוּ (and they shouted) וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ (and pursued) אֶת־ (-) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) עַד־ (as far as) בּוֹאֲךָ֣ (the entrance) גַ֔יְא (of Gai), וְעַ֖ד (and to) שַׁעֲרֵ֣י (the gates) עֶקְר֑וֹן (of Ekron). וַֽיִּפְּל֞וּ (And fell) חַֽלְלֵ֤י (the wounded) פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ (of the Philistines) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ (along the road) שַׁעֲרַ֔יִם (to Shaaraim), וְעַד־ (and to) גַּ֖ת (Gath), וְעַד־ (and to) עֶקְרֽוֹן׃ (Ekron).

53  וַיָּשֻׁ֙בוּ֙ (And returned) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִדְּלֹ֖ק (from chasing) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (the Philistines), וַיָּשֹׁ֖סּוּ (and they plundered) אֶת־ (-) מַחֲנֵיהֶֽם׃ (their camps). 54  וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And took) דָּוִד֙ (David) אֶת־ (-) רֹ֣אשׁ (the head) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (of the Philistine) וַיְבִאֵ֖הוּ (and brought it) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (to Jerusalem). וְאֶת־ (And) כֵּלָ֖יו (his weapons) שָׂ֥ם (he put) בְּאָהֳלֽוֹ׃ס (in his tent).

55  וְכִרְא֨וֹת (And saw) שָׁא֜וּל (Saul) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֗ד (David) יֹצֵא֙ (going out) לִקְרַ֣את (against) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (the Philistine). אָמַ֗ר (He said) אֶל־ (to) אַבְנֵר֙ (Abner) שַׂ֣ר (the commander) הַצָּבָ֔א (of the army), בֶּן־ (Son) מִי־ (of whom is) זֶ֥ה (this) הַנַּ֖עַר (youth), אַבְנֵ֑ר (Abner)?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אַבְנֵ֔ר (Abner), חֵֽי־ (As lives) נַפְשְׁךָ֥ (your soul), הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (O king), אִם־ (if) יָדָֽעְתִּי׃ (I know).

56  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), שְׁאַ֣ל (Inquire) אַתָּ֔ה (you), בֶּן־ (son) מִי־ (of whom) זֶ֖ה (is this)— הָעָֽלֶם׃ס (the young man).

57  וּכְשׁ֣וּב (And returned) דָּוִ֗ד (David) מֵֽהַכּוֹת֙ (from the slaughter of) אֶת־ (-) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י (the Philistine), וַיִּקַּ֤ח (and took) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) אַבְנֵ֔ר (Abner) וַיְבִאֵ֖הוּ (and brought him) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) שָׁא֑וּל (Saul), וְרֹ֥אשׁ (and the head) הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י (of the Philistine) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (was in his hand).

58  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) שָׁא֔וּל (Saul), בֶּן־ (Son) מִ֥י (of whom are) אַתָּ֖ה (you)— הַנָּ֑עַר (O young man)?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And answered) דָּוִ֔ד (David), בֶּֽן־ (Son) עַבְדְּךָ֥ (of your servant) יִשַׁ֖י (Jesse) בֵּ֥ית (the Beth-) הַלַּחְמִֽי׃ (lehemite).
