Temple Rebuilding Resumes
(Haggai 1:1–11)

1  וְהִתְנַבִּ֞י (And prophesied) חַגַּ֣י (Haggai) נְבִיאָה (the prophet) וּזְכַרְיָ֤ה (and Zechariah) בַר־ (son) עִדּוֹא֙ (of Iddo), נְבִיאַיָּא (prophets), עַל־ (to) יְה֣וּדָיֵ֔א (Jews) דִּ֥י (who were) בִיה֖וּד (in Judah) וּבִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם (and Jerusalem), בְּשֻׁ֛ם (in the name) אֱלָ֥הּ (of the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) עֲלֵיהֽוֹן׃ס (who was over them). 2  בֵּאדַ֡יִן (Then) קָ֠מוּ (rose up) זְרֻבָּבֶ֤ל (Zerubbabel) בַּר־ (son) שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל֙ (of Shealtiel), וְיֵשׁ֣וּעַ (and Jeshua) בַּר־ (son) יֽוֹצָדָ֔ק (of Jozadak), וְשָׁרִ֣יו (and they began) לְמִבְנֵ֔א (to build) בֵּ֥ית (the house) אֱלָהָ֖א (of God) דִּ֣י (that is) בִירֽוּשְׁלֶ֑ם (in Jerusalem)— וְעִמְּה֛וֹן (and with them) נְבִיאַיָּא (the prophets) דִֽי־ (of) אֱלָהָ֖א (God) מְסָעֲדִ֥ין (supporting) לְהֽוֹן׃פ (them).

3  בֵּהּ־ (At) זִמְנָא֩ (the same time) אֲתָ֨א (came) עֲלֵיה֜וֹן (to them) תַּ֠תְּנַי (Tattenai), פַּחַ֧ת (governor) עֲבַֽר־ (beyond) נַהֲרָ֛ה (the River), וּשְׁתַ֥ר (and Shethar-) בּוֹזְנַ֖י (boznai), וּכְנָוָתְה֑וֹן (and their companions), וְכֵן֙ (and thus) אָמְרִ֣ין (spoke) לְהֹ֔ם (to them): מַן־ (Who) שָׂ֨ם (has made) לְכֹ֜ם (to you⁺) טְעֵ֗ם (a decree) בַּיְתָ֤א (house) דְנָה֙ (this) לִבְּנֵ֔א (to build), וְאֻשַּׁרְנָ֥א (and wall) דְנָ֖ה (this) לְשַׁכְלָלָֽה׃ס (to finish)?

4  אֱדַ֥יִן (Then) כְּנֵ֖מָא (accordingly) אֲמַ֣רְנָא (we said) לְּהֹ֑ם (to them), מַן־ (What) אִנּוּן֙ (aer) שְׁמָהָ֣ת (the names) גֻּבְרַיָּ֔א (of the men) דִּֽי־ (who) דְנָ֥ה (this) בִנְיָנָ֖א (building) בָּנַֽיִן׃ (are constructing)?

5  וְעֵ֣ין (And the eye) אֱלָהֲהֹ֗ם (of their God) הֲוָת֙ (was) עַל־ (upon) שָׂבֵ֣י (the elders) יְהוּדָיֵ֔א (of Jews), וְלָא־ (and not) בַטִּ֣לוּ (they did make cease) הִמּ֔וֹ (them) עַד־ (until) טַעְמָ֖א (a report) לְדָרְיָ֣וֶשׁ (to Darius) יְהָ֑ךְ (came), וֶאֱדַ֛יִן (and) יְתִיב֥וּן (was returned) נִשְׁתְּוָנָ֖א (a letter) עַל־ (concerning) דְּנָֽה׃פ (this).

Tattenai’s Letter to Darius

6  פַּרְשֶׁ֣גֶן (This is a copy) אִ֠גַּרְתָּא (of the letter) דִּֽי־ (that) שְׁלַ֞ח (sent) תַּתְּנַ֣י׀ (Tattenai) פַּחַ֣ת (governor) עֲבַֽר־ (beyond) נַהֲרָ֗ה (the River), וּשְׁתַ֤ר (and Shethar-) בּוֹזְנַי֙ (boznai), וּכְנָ֣וָתֵ֔הּ (and his companions) אֲפַ֨רְסְכָיֵ֔א (the Apharsachites), דִּ֖י (who) בַּעֲבַ֣ר (were beyond) נַהֲרָ֑ה (the River), עַל־ (to) דָּרְיָ֖וֶשׁ (Darius) מַלְכָּֽא׃ (the king). 7  פִּתְגָמָ֖א (A letter) שְׁלַ֣חוּ (they sent) עֲל֑וֹהִי (to him) וְכִדְנָה֙ (and this) כְּתִ֣יב (was written) בְּגַוֵּ֔הּ (in it):

לְדָרְיָ֥וֶשׁ (To Darius) מַלְכָּ֖א (the king),

שְׁלָמָ֥א (peace) כֹֽלָּא׃ס (all).

8  יְדִ֣יעַ׀ (Known) לֶהֱוֵ֣א (be it) לְמַלְכָּ֗א (to the king) דִּֽי־ (that) אֲזַ֜לְנָא (we went) לִיה֤וּד (of Judah) מְדִֽינְתָּא֙ (into the province), לְבֵית֙ (to the house) אֱלָהָ֣א (of God) רַבָּ֔א (the great) וְה֤וּא (and it) מִתְבְּנֵא֙ (is being built) אֶ֣בֶן (stones) גְּלָ֔ל (with rolled), וְאָ֖ע (and timber) מִתְּשָׂ֣ם (is being laid) בְּכֻתְלַיָּ֑א (in the walls), וַעֲבִ֥ידְתָּא (and work) דָ֛ךְ (this) אָסְפַּ֥רְנָא (diligently) מִתְעַבְדָ֖א (goes on) וּמַצְלַ֥ח (and prospers) בְּיֶדְהֹֽם׃ס (in their hands).

9  אֱדַ֗יִן (Then) שְׁאֵ֙לְנָא֙ (we asked) לְשָׂבַיָּ֣א (elders) אִלֵּ֔ךְ (these), כְּנֵ֖מָא (and thus) אֲמַ֣רְנָא (we spoke) לְּהֹ֑ם (to them): מַן־ (Who) שָׂ֨ם (made) לְכֹ֜ם (for you⁺) טְעֵ֗ם (a decree) בַּיְתָ֤א (house) דְנָה֙ (this) לְמִבְנְיָ֔ה (to build), וְאֻשַּׁרְנָ֥א (and wall) דְנָ֖ה (this) לְשַׁכְלָלָֽה׃ (to finish)?

10  וְאַ֧ף (And also) שְׁמָהָתְהֹ֛ם (their names) שְׁאֵ֥לְנָא (we asked) לְּהֹ֖ם (of them), לְהוֹדָעוּתָ֑ךְ (to inform you), דִּ֛י (that) נִכְתֻּ֥ב (we might write) שֻׁם־ (the names) גֻּבְרַיָּ֖א (of the men) דִּ֥י (who were) בְרָאשֵׁיהֹֽם׃ס (at their head).

11  וּכְנֵ֥מָא (And thus) פִתְגָמָ֖א (an answer) הֲתִיב֣וּנָא (they returned us), לְמֵמַ֑ר (saying),

אֲנַ֣חְנָא (We) הִמּ֡וֹ (are) עַבְדוֹהִי֩ (His servants) דִֽי־ (-) אֱלָ֨הּ (of the God) שְׁמַיָּ֜א (of the heavens) וְאַרְעָ֗א (and earth), וּבָנַ֤יִן (and we are rebuilding) בַּיְתָא֙ (the house) דִּֽי־ (that) הֲוָ֨א (was) בְנֵ֜ה (built) מִקַּדְמַ֤ת (before) דְּנָה֙ (this) שְׁנִ֣ין (years) שַׂגִּיאָ֔ן (many), וּמֶ֤לֶךְ (and a king) לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) רַ֔ב (great) בְּנָ֖הִי (built it) וְשַׁכְלְלֵֽהּ׃ (and completed it). 12  לָהֵ֗ן (But) מִן־ (after) דִּ֨י (that) הַרְגִּ֤זוּ (provoked to wrath) אֲבָהֳתַ֙נָא֙ (our fathers) לֶאֱלָ֣הּ (the God) שְׁמַיָּ֔א (of the heavens), יְהַ֣ב (He gave) הִמּ֔וֹ (them) בְּיַ֛ד (into the hand) נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֥ר (of Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) כַּסְדָּיָא (the Chaldean), וּבַיְתָ֤ה (and house) דְנָה֙ (this) סַתְרֵ֔הּ (he destroyed), וְעַמָּ֖ה (and the people) הַגְלִ֥י (he removed) לְבָבֶֽל׃ס (to Babylon).

13  בְּרַם֙ (But) בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (in the year) חֲדָ֔ה (first) לְכ֥וֹרֶשׁ (of Cyrus) מַלְכָּ֖א (king) דִּ֣י (of) בָבֶ֑ל (Babylon), כּ֤וֹרֶשׁ (Cyrus) מַלְכָּא֙ (the king) שָׂ֣ם (made) טְעֵ֔ם (a decree) בֵּית־ (house) אֱלָהָ֥א (of God) דְנָ֖ה (this) לִבְּנֵֽא׃ (to build). 14  וְ֠אַף (And also) מָאנַיָּ֣א (the vessels) דִֽי־ (of) בֵית־ (the house) אֱלָהָא֮ (of God) דִּ֣י (of) דַהֲבָ֣ה (gold) וְכַסְפָּא֒ (and silver) דִּ֣י (which) נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֗ר (Nebuchadnezzar) הַנְפֵּק֙ (had taken) מִן־ (out) הֵֽיכְלָא֙ (of the temple) דִּ֣י (that was) בִֽירוּשְׁלֶ֔ם (in Jerusalem) וְהֵיבֵ֣ל (and carried) הִמּ֔וֹ (they) לְהֵיכְלָ֖א (into the temple) דִּ֣י (of) בָבֶ֑ל (Babylon), הַנְפֵּ֨ק (took) הִמּ֜וֹ (them) כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ (Cyrus) מַלְכָּ֗א (the king) מִן־ (from) הֵֽיכְלָא֙ (the temple) דִּ֣י (of) בָבֶ֔ל (Babylon), וִיהִ֙יבוּ֙ (and they were given) לְשֵׁשְׁבַּצַּ֣ר (to Sheshbazzar) שְׁמֵ֔הּ (one named), דִּ֥י (whom) פֶחָ֖ה (governor) שָׂמֵֽהּ׃ (he had made). 15  וַאֲמַר־ (And he said) לֵ֓הּ׀ (to him), אֵלֶּה (These) מָֽאנַיָּ֔א (articles) שֵׂ֚א (lift up), אֵֽזֶל־ (go), אֲחֵ֣ת (put down) הִמּ֔וֹ (them) בְּהֵיכְלָ֖א (in the temple) דִּ֣י (that) בִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם (is in Jerusalem), וּבֵ֥ית (and the house) אֱלָהָ֖א (of God) יִתְבְּנֵ֥א (let be rebuilt) עַל־ (on) אַתְרֵֽהּ׃ס (its place).

16  אֱדַ֙יִן֙ (Then) שֵׁשְׁבַּצַּ֣ר (Sheshbazzar) דֵּ֔ךְ (this) אֲתָ֗א (came) יְהַ֧ב (and laid) אֻשַּׁיָּ֛א (the foundations) דִּי־ (of) בֵ֥ית (the house) אֱלָהָ֖א (of God) דִּ֣י (that is) בִירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם (in Jerusalem), וּמִן־ (and from) אֱדַ֧יִן (then on) וְעַד־ (and even until) כְּעַ֛ן (now) מִתְבְּנֵ֖א (it is being built), וְלָ֥א (and not) שְׁלִֽם׃ (it is finished).

17  וּכְעַ֞ן (And now) הֵ֧ן (if) עַל־ (to) מַלְכָּ֣א (the king) טָ֗ב (it is good), יִ֠תְבַּקַּר (let a search be made) בְּבֵ֨ית (in the house) גִּנְזַיָּ֜א (of treasure) דִּי־ (of) מַלְכָּ֣א (the king) תַמָּה֮ (is there) דִּ֣י (that) בְּבָבֶל֒ (in Babylon), הֵ֣ן (whether) אִיתַ֗י (it is) דִּֽי־ (that) מִן־ (by) כּ֤וֹרֶשׁ (Cyrus) מַלְכָּא֙ (King) שִׂ֣ים (was issued) טְעֵ֔ם (a decree) לְמִבְנֵ֛א (to build) בֵּית־ (house) אֱלָהָ֥א (of God) דֵ֖ךְ (this) בִּירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם (in Jerusalem), וּרְע֥וּת (and the will) מַלְכָּ֛א (of the king) עַל־ (concerning) דְּנָ֖ה (this) יִשְׁלַ֥ח (let send) עֲלֶֽינָא׃ס (us).
